Why doesn't every police department in the United States make it mandatory to take so many hours of training of Jit su
Russel is friend of mine...this is awesome
I’m 42 and I got my Purple Belt yesterday. I’m Super stoked..
Congratulations man its definitely isn’t easy as you get older.
I’m 40 and i got my purple belt a week ago.
I’m stoked too!
How long did it take 🎉
@@nia9902 Awhile. I got my Blue Belt in June of 2001 from Carlos Machado. After I got my blue belt I started having a series of small injuries. I would quit for a month here a month there. I finally quit in early 2003. I got complacent, fat, and a really horrible marriage. I was sick and tired of all of that and started BJJ back in January 2020. I trained 3 hrs per week for 4 months, then bumped it to 4.5 hrs for about another 4 months, then got to 6 hours per week for a year. April of 2022 I went to 10 hrs per week lifting 15 hours per week. 11 months later got my purple belt March 25th of this year. Until last week I was training BJJ 25 hours per week from early April and dropped lifting 7-10 hours per week. Unfortunately I hurt my knee really badly. I still instructed and coach, it’s hard to do not being 100%.
@@supercarlito Sweet, congratulations. Dude I blew my knee out last week. It was literally a simple movement on the mat with literally no resistance. I was showing a new guy some simple technique. I was training and instructing 25 hours per week. My transitions and subs were killing it. Hitting these sweet setup on these high level browns. Now that’s me getting 1 sub for every 4 of his. Still an ego boost. Plus I’m 43, 165lbs, at 5’5”.
Just started BJJ at 73. Just a little over two weeks, Fifteen training days in 17 days. Lost 3 lbs and everything is sore but I'm still enjoying itl.
Dude great for you at 73 still getting at it.
15 training in 17 days for a beginner is very impressive. You must be in super in shape.
Hardly in super shape, need to lose 20 lbs, have multiple injuries, low back, both knees, right shoulder. Lots of things I can't do well yet but no one ever got good at anything by not doing itg. .Today will mark the beginning of my 5th week, in 28 days I made 22 classes. My hot tub is getting a great workout.

Wow this is awesome!! Wishing you the best on your journey! There are several videos on YT regarding BJJ after 40 with concepts and tips that get even more important with age. I can recommend the one from GracieBreakdown, Ryron & Rener Gracie. Btw, Helio Gracie rolled up until his death at 95, such a legend
Don't stop buddy oossssaaa
The world is split into two. There are those who found Joe Rogan through Jiu Jitsu, and those who found Jiu Jitsu through Joe Rogan 😂
Absolute wisdom
Well said 🤙🏻
I am 136 years old and have been doing BJJ for almost 3 days, enjoying it a lot.

Never too late bro!
I'm 200 and Golden Black belt.

Don't forget to warm up before exercise😂😂😂
I started 6 months ago after watching this, I'm 47. It's addictive. Joe Rogan is a legend. I've lost 45 pounds, stopped smoking(tobacco), and I am learning how to choke people.
I love that you didn't stop smoking weed 😅 toking just before rolling is the best
This clip is a masterclass in how to listen to the other person while they speak 👌🏻
Joe talks. And Russel listens😅
Neil Degrasse Tyson been real loud since this Clip came out
It's sad. And i was well into adulthood when I learned that the majority of people aren't listening when you think you're having a conversation with them. They'll throw in a lazy reply every now and then. But most are just waiting to talk. And now it's so bad I get second hand embarrassment for people that don't understand how to correctly participate in a fucking conversation lol.please ya gotta Listen people, LISTEN! Just LISTEN ¡!¡!¡ If the littlest miniscule of amount of respect or care for the person you're talking to, listen,
But Nah, I mean Yah I can appreciate a proper listener
It's respect and Jiu jitsu is a great way of learning it as well as active listening skills
Bapa could never
I started at 48. I turned 50 last year. Blue belt with one stripe under Relson Gracie. BJJ changed my life and helped me get the balance I needed.

How long would you practice BJJ in a day ?

It's very impressive how articulate, insightful, and original Brand can be. I didn't see this depth to him even a few years ago, and I was listening then.
I'm positive he didn't either 😉 thank goodness he figured it out, for all our sake.
I think it was always in him, perhaps without the particular earned understanding of class disparity or the perspective self-inflicted pain has bestowed upon him now but, a genuine compassion and desire to meaningfully connect with humanity and truth has always been there.
I think many of us care so much but perhaps reject or fear that drive because developmentally and socially, caring isn't cool yet. So instead, we mask our need for attention and connection to others with childish humor and drugs.
Things take the time they do for a reason. There are few things as insufferable as a well-intentioned but, niave and, sophomoric crusader that endeavors to enlighten others without the wisdom of experience themselves. You have to make mistakes of your own and be forgiven, to have the necessary compassion for yourself and others.
He's always been this good...just people dismissed him because he's a comedian and English...
The most cliche thing to say about brand on virtually every comment section of any video of him 🎉

Thanks for writing this comment man. I needed to read it! I've been out of it for so long and was feeling annoyed at myself and sad for not sticking with it. I need these kind of comments to help me realise that hope is not lost!
How often did train to get to black belt?
As a BJJ purple belt, I FELT what Russel said about feeling the confidence at purple. There are so many amazing practitioners around me and for the first time, I became a purple belt, and I could see BJJ for what it is. By doing that, I’ve realized what type of animals and special BJJ practitioners out there. It’s a challenging belt but so enlightening.
I love Russell's visits more and more
I am 49 years old and received my pure belt two weeks ago. Happy as a camper!
40 year old from Dublin, Ireland here.
I started on the mats 3 months ago.
It’s very hard and you have good and bad days, but as they say it helps you manage the stress of life.
What I will say is they, you need to be patient and give the sport the time it deserves. In 3 months I have been submitted about 200 times. It’s hurts mentally and physically because your weaknesses are being exposed. I guess you could say, BJJ is tough but humbling.
i’m going to start today or tomorrow, what’s it like the first few weeks? thanks bro that’s dope your started at 40 i wish my dad would do it with me but he has no time and a big ego

Only 200 taps in 3 months?? I got tapped 200 times per day in my first 3 months 😂
Where in Dublin do you train. I’m looking for a good club to join
I did martial arts again a month ago purely to learn Self Defense, I thought it was boring practice Self Defense moves but now I think I’m sparking back my old passion for it again . A month in and martial arts has helped me feel more confident, a lot stronger and helped with my anxiety, relaxes me considerably causing better sleep and helped rid my depression and made me more self disciplined and improve my health and joy. Out most exciting things in life is practice something and getting better and better continually wheather martial arts, learning ecommerce, cooking, etc makes ones life exciting whereas I thought my life was boring prior .
The more I find out about Russell Brand and the "drug" challenges he has overcome, the more I respect him
Russel amazes me with his insight, his being so articulate, and commitment- jujitsu? 😅 and Rogan is just his calm levelheaded himself. Loved the interaction

I took my second class today and one thing I wasn't expecting was that I'm already overcoming my claustrophobia. I became seriously claustrophobic and started to panic when rolling around with a purple belt but I was determined to only tap when I absolutely had no choice. Sure enough I got past it. I tapped about 10 seconds later though when he started choking me lol
A good listen. I am almost 57 and just started. Enjoying the cerebral aspect as much as the physical. Right now it is like playing chess although no one told me how the pieces move yet. Exciting journey.
“ the difference between when I was a purple belt vs black belt is I learned more trained more and got better” think that pretty much sums up every level of advancement in every aspect of life lol
Yup
No, there is a distinct difference between purple belt and blue belt. The difference is less notable between other belts...that's what he is trying to convey I think.
Once you hit purple you're at the top of the mountain and can see the summit and just have to keep going. That's the point he's making.
The thing is, when you are a white belt you just do everything wrong by instinct, when you are a blue belt you have mastered the very basic techniques and dont do dumb mistakes anymore, but you also dont have a game of your own, at purple belt you have your game, your sweeps, the submissions and the set ups to it, the details in the moves... you basically know a lot already, it takes 5 years to be a purple belt its more time than to get a degree
@@adamw1555yeah I got to where blue belts at my weight, I could steamroll (as a white belt), but purple was a whole other monster. Still is....
Man I love the way so many ppl from so many different walks of life are trying and committing themselves to jiu jitsu. Says so much about the nature of the art.
Jui Jitsu is great, I got my 10yr old into it and he loves it!! A confidence booster and be able to handle yourself was very important for me and for him!!
Training for something and getting better and better is one of the most rewarding things in life. Doesnt matter what it is. Baking or BJJ. Music or gaming.
I had to quit Boxing and BJJ. Injuries suck at a certain age. Learning to play chess now. 2 years ago I was around 1,000 rating. I just won my first tournament! It was an under 1,700 tournament, but I won it. 68 people. I went 5 wins 2 draws 1 loss. My performance was rated 1815! Now that's not world class, but it felt really good to me.
You're right, putting in time and improving feels great. I don't think as much about being better than my opponents as being better than me last week.
Two brilliant communicators that make you want to take on a sport that you have no interest in participating. I think these two are going to be two of the most influential entertainers in shaping our society and God bless them for being honest.
Try it out in your free time. You might like it. Usually, everyone in any martial arts field are good and nice people. It also helps with your mental and physical fitness.
Enhancing your warrior energy. Love it
Love too see Joe and Russell hug it out ju jitsu style on the studio floor !!!!

The way Joe describes the feeling and beauty of Jui Jitsu is how I feel about golf. I bet for all of us, the thing we passionately pursue has such a deep meaning. Joe is so good at describing things. These two are some of my favorite people to listen to.
Hell yeah! It’s like how I am with porn, weed, chicken nuggets. Passionate!
I'm not sure how anything stacks up next to a perfectly flushed 6 iron or the feeling of draining a 35 ft triple breaking snake on the 18th. I've been balls deep in playboy models before and it wasn't even close!! 🤣🤣
A man who knows the way in one thing, can see the way in all things- paraphrased
I just wish golf was something that didn’t cost thousands of dollars and could be played more than 4 months out of the year like Jui Jitsu.
@Axe2Grind yeah, depending on where someone lives, it could be really restrictive with snow.

Russell Brand is a well articulated person. Enjoy listening to him talk, its modern day poetry.
My Brazilian ju jutsi story:
I am a 6’2” 280 pounds overall good shape black guy white belt. One of my sparring/ rolling partner was a 5’6” 140 pound white guy name Chris. ( a purple belt)
“Chris” for 6 months will routinely whipped my ass every single day. No matter what I did he had an answer for it. It was so frustrating because I just couldn’t understand. I had nightmare about it. Also to make it worse…….. he was so NICE!!!!. The kindest/sincere person I ever met.
The day I was able to finally make him tap was like the top 5 moment in my life. I literally took a month to plan and strategize a sequence to beat him. Once I made him tap I scream of pure joy. The whole gym stop and starting laughing and giving me props. (My struggle against “chris” was the gym running joke)
It took a few months before I regular hold my own against him. (Not due to skills but my size and strength started to play a much bigger factor than before. )
Congrats dude 👍🏼

I am 45 and just got my Blue belt after winning a state comp. 1.5 yrs of training 3-4 times a week (Gi and No-Gi). I really had to adjust life outside of BJJ. Started lifting weights, quit drinking alcohol, better sleeping, respected recovering time for minor injuries, eating continuously well, quality supplements, etc. The Blue belt made me stronger outside of the matts. I will keep training and getting stronger. Hopefully one day I will get a Purple belt. Osss
Great 👍🏼 discussion - very inspiring - almost 57, restarted at 49, old 3 stripe purple…
Good job!
Cracks me up that 20+ years ago they used to say the only difference between a really good blue belt and a blackbelt is the bluebelt has to think about their setups and its second nature for the blackbelt.
Now it's apparently purplebelt.
Stuck on the bottom in "suckville" is a horrible feeling for the first few months to years.

I started BJJ two months ago at 57. I love it, but walking in to something so new and different is really a confidence booster.
Any advice or recommendations for starting BJJ at 57?
I don't know why it took me so long to appreciate jiu-jitsu, but at 44, I would absolutely love to join a gym. I've watched a lot of tutorials and learned quite a few moves at this point, but that only goes so far. My little 3-year-old rolling partner has been a champ, but it's time for me to take it to the next level. She's too little to practice heel hooks on.

I started late. 55 yo. Did it for about 1 and a half years before Covid shut down my gym. There were a fair amount of injuries, but I value the training I had highly. I advanced quickly because of my TKD and boxing experience. Not that striking related to any of the BJJ skills, but I knew what to expect discipline-wise. The experience was humbling and empowering at different times. But it totally helped my confidence in striking. Less fear of take downs, not feeling totally helpless on the ground, etc.
Good luck on your journey! Did you start again now?
@@jorichter4870
No. And it was and continues to be a tough choice. I play music professionally. The grind and occasional injuries interfere with that. My fingers were always sore , which interfered with my playing, never mind the other occasional injuries. I just train solo at this point. Weights, kicking and punching, as well as some BJJ drills which I have incorporated into my routine.
MAGNIFICENT 😊

Whenever a celebrity gets a belt Im always a little skeptical lol
Where's the footage of him rolling?
BJJ is amazing, started about a year ago and never looked back
The problem is the more people learn these things then the higher the bar needs to be raised out in the streets.
Someone with bad intentions instead of using their fists in the past is now going to use a knife or gun if they think people know martial arts.
It's all BS, Just do it to keep fit but don't expect to stop a bullet, What works in the ring doesn't always work out on the streets.
@Top Lobster To be fair at a lot of mma gyms no gi jiu jitsu will also entail optional wrestling instruction.
The average guy doing jiu jitsu is not doing it because they want to fight criminals in the streets lmao. Its a hobby.

I'm still a pretty new blue belt, and the idea of being good enough to earn a purple belt is completely baffling to me. Like how will I possibly get that good?

I have hidradenitis which is also an inflammatory disease but it results in lesions that swell. Researching which diets resulted in less inflammation helped me get it under control.
