  • The AGM-158 JASSM-ER is an air-launched cruise missile that became operational in 2014. Unlike its predecessor, which used a turbojet engine, the JASSM-ER utilizes a turbofan engine similar to those found in tactical fighter planes, and has an internal structure that allows for additional fuel storage, increasing its range from around 230 miles to over 620 miles. The missile is guided by an internal inertial navigation and GPS unit for most of its flight, which was originally developed for weapons such as the AGM-154 Joint Standoff Weapon. Once the missile reaches its target, it switches to an infrared seeker for terminal guidance.

    You don't mention the HF-2 and HF-2b anti-ship missiles from Taiwan. Taiwan has over 1,000 of them. The HF-2b is new, and just being produced now.
    Their range is 250km. Even if their ECCM is not as sophisticated, they will still be able to take out troop ships, and less well defended ships than the lead capital ships of the PLA Navy, which likely have good defenses. The 400 Harpoons Taiwan has can take those out.

    • @hughmungus2760
      @hughmungus2760 Рік тому

      The war over taiwan will almost exclusively be an air and missile war. The US will not be able to generate meaningful CAP over taiwan due to the distance their planes need to travel while chinese aviation would mop up taiwan's air force and the PLARF would quickly degrade taiwan's military logistics with sustained strategic bombardment.
      the only naval assets used by china will be submarines which will lay mine around taiwan's ports and hunt the few sub taiwan has.

      It would be nice to have at least one for every ship in the People's Liberation Army Navy and their Coast guard which contains many military ships. It'll also be useful to have some for the civilian roll on roll off ships which would be used in an invasion. Obviously, some of the larger targets would need more than one missile but there are others that aren't worth a missile. The promise that everyone assumes that China couldn't shoot any of these down. They have air board early warning and control aircraft with L-band phased array radars. They have drones with the same types of radars. And they have fighter aircraft with X-Band AESA radars They have destroyers and cruisers with dual band AESA radars. Stealthy me a souls can be detected at close ranges and some are going to be shot down

    perhaps calling the AGM 158 the most dangerous missile in the world is not wrong because they have a long range, great destructive power and stealth... But the greatest strength of this missile is that they can be launched from any airship American aircraft carrier with the Rapid Gagon launch system.

    I have 2 questions. First, are either of these weapons nuclear capable? And second, what does carrying a stealth weapon like LRASM externally on the F35 do to the stealth characteristics of the jet? If anyone knows, I'd appreciate the answer. Thanks! 🤓

    • @painthuret
      @painthuret Рік тому +6

      It will obviously compromise the plane's stealth capabilities.
      This is one of the reason why the NGAD program is being developed as the added external fuel reservoirs were also compromising the purpose of the F35 and F22's stealth capabilities as the new pacific theater will require more range

      There's really no need to strap this to an f35 as it's main role is to identify targets. Leave the missile trucking to bombers and f15s.

    • @user-iw2fq3ky9q
      @user-iw2fq3ky9q Рік тому +3

      Stealth is mainly achieved by the top layer of planes so missles and some bombs that are external don't do much to effect it, because they're under the wings! Most radar systems will not detect it until it's to late, meaning they'd only detect when in close proximity. Btw not sure about your 1st quest., but would think one if not both would be capable!

    Is the JASSM-ER another wonder weapon only the US has? This is just an ordinary air-launched cruise missile with a range of about 400km designed for stationary ground target. I would say the Tomahawk cruise missile with a range of 1000km is even more potent, especially launched from a submarine except that both are sub-sonic missiles. How do they compare with the Chinese hypersonic missiles with ranges of 1000km to 3000km? US bombers will be shot down before they even have a chance to launch the cruise missiles...

      Yes indeed Tomahawks for deep strike with 2,400km range, but Taiwan is already a formidable force
      JASSM ER, LRASM is a force multiplier that will swarm or overwhelm Chinese this munitions is considered drones loitering munitions with 1000lbs explosives and can be carried by cargos C130s C5s C17s palletised munitions which Taiwan has C130s can carry up to 18 cruise missiles plus Taiwan's F-16s and other tactical fighters, though Taiwan has lots of standoffs missiles like South Korea Popeye's missiles, SLAM ER missiles, JDAM kits plus Taiwan's domestic built long range supersonic cruise missiles for deep strike with 1000km range with all precisions, I bet Chinas Xi will scream out loud 90% of China's Naval fleet will be destroyed in the first salvos in the event of major conflict between Taiwan and Chinas PLA and BTW I wasn't able to include Japan which they would intervene and will be on Taiwan's side if a major conflict with China
      and yes US defense already acknowledged Chinas long range hypersonic missiles DF-21 or DF-17 which they've seen evidence via satellite imegary which flew straight to its target across Mongolia, however US withdrew from INF treaty with Russia during trump's administration, US has its own operational hypersonic missile but wouldn't consider as a true hypersonic missiles LRHW with a range of 1000km with C-HGB warhead this missile is considered to be intermediate range with a range of 4000km+ the warhead is considered (MaRV) Maneuvering re-entry vehicle like those of Pershing ll's this will be operated by US army and plans to be deployed on a Zumwalt destroyers the US still various arsenal such as LRSO and defense contractors are still working on HGV hypersonic glide vehicle and HCM hypersonic cruise missiles which will be strap by f-15 EX named HAWC as they considered true hypersonic missiles

      Also for context, one of the tests every Chinese destroyer have to pass before entering service is to simultaneously defeat 8x incoming supersonic sea-skimming ASMS target drones appearing at horizon range, at subsonic speeds with 3x more reaction time you're going to need to throw at least 30x JASSM at each ship just to replicate the same test conditions they passed.
