Maybe Vietnam can join Philippines... Vietnam is not a hardcore communist government anyway.. the Vietnamese government is for the people from what I have seen about Vietnamese being happy there.
One mistake China made was being too aggressive in SCS, especially with the Philippines. The PH was already distancing itself from the US, starting as far as the 90s during the shutdown of US naval and air bases in the PH. They are really trying to be neutral and independent, until now. Even the recent president tried warming up with China (and was really hostile with the US) but to no avail. Now, even the doves and anti-US politicians in the Philippines are losing their influence on the general population. It's hard to imagine having 4 new US bases (temporary and limited) in the PH, especially before the SCS issue, there's no way the PH government can get away with that. The Filipinos are fearful and angry and now returning to their oldest ally. They know war is inevitable especially when Chinese bases are just a couple of miles away from their homes, locals hear sounds of explosions and see the silhouette of Chinese ships from their shores, and their fishermen are told to scurry away by the Chinese coast guard. And even now as of writing, the PH president is in the US, strengthening their alliance. If only China left the PH alone with their sea territories, the PH will not have to resort to allowing a substantial US military presence in their country. They would have an easier time with Taiwan, with a neutral PH. I won't be surprised if the PH in the future will agree to give the US, proper and permanent bases, let's say reopening the Subic Naval Base (the largest US naval base back then in Asia) and the Clark Air Base.
If everyone hasn't yet noticed, China is incredibly clumsy when it comes to diplomacy. Their style is like a bull in a China shop. Recall the Chinese ambassador to France's comment about former Soviet states.
China already established themselves on Philippines claimed area of the SCS without Philippines permission. As we speak, resources are being extract and US military wouldn't dare to bomb China artificial island. So what is your point? You are not stopping China. China do as she please.
Subtlety has never been the PRC's strong suit. Their default to any perceived slight, from John Cena calling Taiwan a country, to the US Navy steaming a carrier strike group through the Taiwan strait is exactly the same. Everyone is tired of it. And China had the Philippines on the cusp of being a foil to the US military presence in the Pacific--the US had abandoned Subic and Clark, and Duterte was ready to make deals, but ... the so-called "long game" that China is famous for playing was too much for them. Now the US military is welcomed back to the Philippines. Same story in a dozen other places

It's not even about having total control over the said international water, but more about controlling China's access. I can definitely see this happening if the war takes place, not to mention the support this action will get from the other countries invested in this possible war.

Maps don't lie. Taiwan and Ukraine are the modern Belgium. In both World Wars,Belgium declared neutrality, but was invaded by Germany because it sat along a natural invasion route into France. Belgium just had the misfortune of being between hostile powerful states that needed to cross it to get at each other.
Unknown to many, the Chinese PLA & PLN conducted live fire drills near our Batanes islands last August 2022 & last month. The target area was only about 75 Km from our closest island. The Bashi channel is a strategic choke point. Chinese war planners knew this well. They need to secure this to surround Taiwan when the time comes. This channel is very important to global supply chain & contains many international communication undersea cables. Our concern for the 150,000 plus OFW’s adds also to the inevitable link to the Taiwan situation.

This is why I consider the average Filipino's lack of awareness on Taiwan's current situation very alarming. Not that it is not an important issue either, but most of us here are more focused on pissing on our own corrupt politicians than even the defense of our borders. The Bashi Channel was a happy hunting grounds for US submarines in WW2. US subs decimated Japanese shipping going through there between Japan & the Dutch East indies. The Bashi Channel was a choke point for Japanese maritime shipping & most of Japan's oil came through there on heavily laden tankers. It's one of the main reasons we never had to invade Japan. US subs so depleted Japanese oil supplies, that by 1945 many of their major warships were restricted to harbors for lack of fuel. As soon as I saw this video pop up on my choice list, that's the first thing I thought of.

I agree, it really helps to immerse you into the grand scale of the topic, and i really love the topographic shaded relief map, it really highlights the "geo" in "geopolitics", and adds a whole dimension of terrain and biome to the content that most creators don't bother to use, and it just overall looks beautiful and colourful. As a USN Veteran.....this channel TOTALLY got my attention! As I and other sailors practice in, evaluating our, and improving ourselves in attacks in S. Korea, but as I was close to retirement, we were discussing an invasion of Taiwan as well.... The point was they posed to me was .... "What If..." China were to go into Taiwan, how would you protect them?? I pointed out the same evaluation that you present here with Japan protecting the northern portion of the island, while the US, with Philippine co-operation, to the south of Taiwan in the same Bashi Channel.... As a Mission Crew Commander Air Battle Manager on AWACS and prior commander of the largest US ground radar unit in Japan, you did a pretty good job bringing up issues for both sides. You were a little light on the US numbers and capability from Okinawa, which is quite formidable.
I agree with you Commander, but wouldn't you agree the vital importance of proximity, the closer you can get your troops/military to any conflict is the key to the US military superiority when it comes to a possible conflict. As a former sailor myself, we sail around the world to show military might to deter any if not all possible threat.
I would argue China would never invade directly when the time comes but blockade Taiwan till it runs out of fuel. It’ll allow other vessels to pass, and therefore force US forces to fire on them first. As for actually engaging China I would ask how come not a single NATO troop is helping fight in Ukraine? Nuclear ICBMs. Which Chinese also has and rapidly expanding. The narrator even mentioned the Cuban missile crisis but it works both ways. Do the rest of the world want to risk nuclear war for Taiwan? They certainly won’t for Ukraine.

Excellent analysis. China had a chance with Duterte. If China gave up its claim of Philippines EEZ's as per UNCLOS, it would have changed Filipino strategic thinking. But Xi Jinping is not as visionary as Deng Xiaoping. Xi insisted it "owns" the South China Sea. Even "allowing" Filipinos to exploit that EEZ for 50 years(maybe) can be earthshaking in that region. Today, even a Code of Conduct will not be sufficient to turn around strategic evaluations.

This is a great example of strategy. I am living here in Basey Samar Philippines right now on the shores of the Leyte Gulf. Where the biggest naval battle in history took place in WW2. I have been watching the escalation here for over 5 years. Now things are really heating up here and forces are growing.
As a Filipino, the only reason I see for the current administration to take a total and highly risky U-turn was because, in spite every democratic efforts Filipinos gave especially by the Duterte administration, there is no way China and Chinese government will listen to a small and less capable country like ours. We are left with no choice but to take the other side. Because if war is eventually going to happen, which I think will but hope not between China and Taiwan, geography whether we choose it or not, Philippines will still be involved.
With a war between USA and China, US bases in the Philippines will make the country a target for the Chinese. That's the most important consequence of the American bases. There are no advantages for the Filipinos.

During the COLD WAR just below the BASHI Channels, are the BATANES several small islands, it has a rought and deep sea level. This area used to be the resting place for US Nuclear Submarine, stay submerge for 2-3month then report back to Subic Bay. Today Pres Marcos agreed for 4 additional existing military bases under the EDCA agreement. LAL LO Airport base and OSIAS NAVAL BASE both located in CAGAYAN, the northern tip of the Philippines, which is 300 km away from TAIWAN. The closes island which is MAVULIS Island is 80 km away from TAIWAN and it has PH MARINES detachment guarding the Island.

Looking at the historical records of the economy of the Philippines they were doing pretty good until 1991 when 12 Philippine senators decided they did not want to host Subic Naval base and Clarke Airforce base. Their economy struggled for decades after that. But those senators were portrayed as heroes for the Sovereignty of the Philippines. In hindsight they doomed the Philippines by rejecting the protection offered by the USA and the hundreds of millions of dollars those bases brought into their economy. They lost many Islands in the South China sea to China. China already has maps depicting their maritime border as encompassing the Philippines. Now they want US bases to come back. I say offer them ZERO monetary compensation for the USA to do that. The USA should not have to pay the Philippines to protect the Philippines.

Man the history between taiwan and the Philippines go WAY back. Before they were even called their present-day names of Taiwan and Philippines, the natives of these two groups of islands have already been trading with each other for centuries. In fact there is a term for this, which the historians have dubbed the "Maritime Jade Network." Many artifacts have been unearthed in the regions of SEA, from vietnam to the Philippines and Taiwan. The latter being called the "Sa-Huynh Cultural Sphere." So blood really runs deep and thick in relation to Taiwan and the rest of southeast asia.

Orchid Island (Lanyu island) is home to the Tao people, who share a close kinship with their neighbors to the south in the Batanes islands. As a Taiwanese, I do observed many older generation Taiwanese judge or even dislike Filipino maids for some unknown reason, I'd like apologize for that, Taiwanese in general do not know much about international situation due to their limited English and unregulated media that controls by China, they only know Japan, Korea, China, US, Ukraine, and that's about it. I personally love Filipino people, they're very hard working, friendly, well English spoken people to be around with, my mom's boss used to hire this Filipino maid who cooks amazing Taiwanese food, even my mom try to ask her how she cooks it, she's also very nice speaking English and some Mandarin to me when I was little. I hope in the future, once Taiwan get rid of our country's name "Republic Of China", we can start forming a stronger, friendlier bond with Philippines using Taiwan as our official name. After all, we're neighbors for the past and we will be neighbors for the next hundred and thousands of years. But currently, we're not only battling China(the CCP), but we are also battling and try to make peace with our pro China faction KMT, they both pose a threat limiting Taiwan under One China Policy, and Taiwanese people do not like it, especially after what happened in Hong Kong in 2019, people in Taiwan realized One China Policy is definitely a lie, and KMT still try to preach and sell the idea to Taiwanese people. With that being said, hopefully the US military bases in Philippines can help us deter China and buy us more time, and hopefully it doesn't cause people of Philippines too much trouble by having more US troops stay in your country. Honestly, I did not think about this channel at all when thinking about factors towards the defense of Taiwan. This video puts a lot of perspective into how important owning this waterway will be to either defend or take Taiwan. I love how this video also puts a lot more perspective to the position the US currently holds against China and how that can affect an eventual invasion.. Great video as always Kamome. I lived in Taiwan for 7-years from 2001 to 2008 and this video is the most condensed, but accurate, review of the situation between China and Taiwan. The politics involved from beginning of WWII through to the 70's, 80's and 90's get very complex. While also interesting, discussions that include the political history get bogged down and I love how you've simply focused on economics and military reality.

Everyone is just fed up with it and after watching what happened to Hong Kong 4-5 years ago support for reunification has declined overall. They’re also many invisible factors involved: Taiwan industrialized decades before China so it was supremely wealthy in the 1980’s and much of China’s manufacturing production capacity was the result of Taiwanese investment. If it wasn’t for that big, unseen fact, China might have invaded Taiwan already. And because of that fact they might never follow through. It would devastate the Chinese economy.

The Replublic of China retreated and based in Taiwan always promote reunification by force until 80s then, as you mentioned all the investment in China, direct transportaton resumed and families' reunifications, social interaction and relationship build up, etc. There was a high hope of reunification peacefully, thus, leaders of both sides met regularly. And, guess what, Rebalance to Aisa and the Pacific strategy came in and instigated all sort of fear, distrust, protest, riot, supported the corrupted DPP to take over the government. This current government rewrote education and history to brain wash younger generation to distant from China (except Trade) that they don't even know the correct name of their own country is Republic of China! Indonesia is a far younger country and it was all over the place with government ideaology in the 60's and 70's - it is still taken seriously as should Taiwan. China has less claim to Taiwan than Russia does on Ukraine. Taiwan was a post industrial society with world class manufacturing, elected government and amazing healthcare in the 1980s when the only thing manufactured in Mainland China was plastic toys and tens of millions had still not recovered from the mass murder of Chairman Mao. In Hong Kong, Mainland Chinese agitators used the democratic system to fund campaigns that slowly elected Beijing-friendly politicians into positions of power then shut down democracy - which was the true cause of that unrest. Thankfully for the independant nation of Taiwan there is a much more diverse group of demographics at play in Formosa, and with truly independant spirit that will not just lay down to an authoritarian regime. The geography of Taiwan makes it difficult also. The mountains on the east coast are very tall. And the sea is only calm about 2 months out of the year.

You might want to try adding up the population of all your allies and see how many Chinese provinces they add up to. Then try adding up their industrial output and see how many provinces they add up to Then try adding up their navy and see how much percentage of PLAN they add up to. Then look at how many of them are entirely within Chinese hypersonic range, and subtract number of hypersonic missiles China have from their navy size. The only benefit of having "allies", or more accurately vassals, is you can coerce them into fighting proxy war with China without getting involved yourself. And fun fact, most Chinese territories in its 4000 year history are obtained through taking over land of invading barbarians after their invasions failed.

America is not a true friend. It has sparked hundreds of conflicts worldwide in its pursuit to dictate and control other countries, shaping their beliefs, altering their religions, and erasing their cultures. Wherever America goes, it imposes its own culture, often destroying everything in its path. Marcos was not elected by the Philippines; he was positioned by American influence, just as Zelensky was in Ukraine.
The way China treated the Philippines pretty much made or baked their chances of taking Taiwan. If they focused on the country's relevance in their ambitions, the situation would be very much different. Remember that former Philippine President Duterte already aligned the country with China and squared up against the US, until the new one PBBM saw the excessiveness of China's abusive and violating actions and chose to leverage power and defensive capabilities by becoming closer to the latter. Had the former scenario remained, China would not hesitate into taking action right away. But that's not the case is it? The CCP/Mainland Chinese Government neglected the importance of their neighbor's favorability, they basically gave away Taiwan independence on a silver platter.
I read somewhere that even NATO is eyeing China's presence in the UKR-RUS war, calling out the irony of being a "peace-keeping nation" whilst literally arming for an invasion. China is not only vulnerable but really on a losing game. They're facing too many greater odds. This is a mere speculation, but what do you guys think of the possibility that the PLA is being pressured by their executives to still call an invasion despite these greater odds? Like a mob forcing the lackeys to do the dirty work? It's really hard to see the common Chinese population supporting these obviously greed driven maneuvers of their government unless they wage a dictatorship over their country (maybe they already have?)
With that said, if the invasion still pushes forth, China is going to risk it all. I wouldn't be surprised if we get something like a Tianmen part two if CCP forces this war despite their people's (probable?) unwillingness. Also, let us take note of the fact that China's interest does not only lie on southern waters, They have other border conflicts with neighbors in different directions that may be very interested in taking advantage of their vulnerable position.
On another note, let's say China's goal is not really "reunification." There are some analysts who already called out the possibility of China's hegemonic ambitions. What if Taiwan's really just a first step? What if they are not only preparing for Taiwan, but to take over all major positions in South China Sea, particularly the West Philippine Sea? Maybe this is quite a stretch, but think about it. A war with Taiwan and the US will justify any military move they make and if they maximize it, they have the manpower to do so. To sum it all up, it's not really much of a conflict with other nations, it's really just China being a fried lizard wiener and annoying everyone and risking world destruction.
Duterte didn't "align" to China, it gave a space for potential cooperation, if we "aligned" to China, we wounldn't have expanded our relations with Japan, Korea and India, where China considered them hostiles. Duterte formed an Asia-centric diplomacy, devoid from previous administration of a Western or US-Centered Diplomacy.

The larger significance of the Bashi Channel is its depth. It makes US SSBNs (ballistic nuclear submarines) undetectable while headed towards the South China Sea. Once there US SSBNs may remain undetectable while less than 200miles from Guangzhou and 300 miles from Hong Kong. Their depressed trajectory SLBMs (nuclear ballistic missiles launched from SSBNs) have very short flight times. We are talking under ten minutes from order received to impact made.
If I was running China I wouldn't be worried about US SSBNs. I would worry about Virginia class nuclear attack subs with about 60 missiles /torpedoes per sub moving as fast underwater as modern ships do on the surface . No navy would survive and no container ships either

If war were to ever break out between China and Taiwan, I can't even begin to comprehend the sheer scale of the naval-humanitarian corridor from Taiwan to the Philippines. The current population of Taiwan is 23.57 Million, even if half that were to be refugees that would rival the India-Pakistan partition of 14 million displaced. Would the PLA honor a temporary cease fire? Where in the northern island of Luzon would you house 10-12 million civilian refugees? for how long? food, medicine, housing, work permits, language/cultural barriers. It'd be a humanitarian nightmare unless the allies plan ahead.
We have dense jungles and mountainous positions in Cordillera Administrative Region and Sierra Madre in north east Luzon they are good defensive positions it is high ground and rough terrain. Our soldiers will mow down their invading Ships with Brahmos batteries and now American HIMARS systems. The only thing that will give them the edge are Nukes 1 Nuke on Luzon would vaporize us leaving Manila at a mercy.
China has a massive fleet of subs as well, and all us bases is within their missle range and they also have overwhelming number of missle. In a real war, everybody will run out of missles in a week whIle china can keep going for years.

How does this apply to a theoretical invasion of Taiwan by China?
Well, for one, China is lurking in Philippine waters. Philippine interest is definitely involved in this war. You can't just call out the legality of the actions between US and the Philippines given how China is pretty much rubbing the noses of Philippine shores.

The US entering into hostilities would not produce any treaty obligations on the Philippine side. When the US attacked Iraq and Iraq launched missiles at US planes, was the Philippes obligated to join the war to protect the US? Treaties are written in a very precise way for very good reasons.
the ph korea and australia will be treaty bound to assist the americans. nz also has one but the us had a disagreement with a former nz gov. altho saw news recently that nz might be warming back to the idea of US alliance. this was the compromise done in the pacific, unlike NATO that enmeshed all countries. In the pacific it became something like "an attack on the US is an attack on all" the japanese has a technical carveout because they are technically not allowed to have an armed forces.
The new bases are actually more northern than what was shown here. Its in cagayan province the northern most tip of the main island of luzon, which makes it only a couple of hundred miles away from taiwan.
Hi, I would just like to comment that the graphics for the presentation are indeed amazing. That said, I feel that flying through the area from various directions and orbiting from every angle and speed detracts from the experience, as adjusting and reorienting myself around the new view would take some time. For example, once you mentioned Kaohsiung, I kept trying to find it everytime a new view came around. I feel sticking to a standard view first and orienting from that might help. Just my two cents. I understand and appreciate your point, but I would encourage you to pause the video and orient as necessary, and possibly rewatch the video a few times as this is really an internet treasure of a YT channel. One mistake China made was being too aggressive in SCS, especially with the Philippines. The PH was already distancing itself from the US, starting as far as the 90s during the shutdown of US naval and air bases in the PH. They are really trying to be neutral and independent, until now. Even the recent president tried warming up with China (and was really hostile with the US) but to no avail.
Now, even the doves and anti-US politicians in the Philippines are losing their influence on the general population. It's hard to imagine having 4 new US bases (temporary and limited) in the PH, especially before the SCS issue, there's no way the PH government can get away with that. The Filipinos are fearful and angry and now returning to their oldest ally. They know war is inevitable especially when Chinese bases are just a couple of miles away from their homes, locals hear sounds of explosions and see the silhouette of Chinese ships from their shores, and their fishermen are told to scurry away by the Chinese coast guard.
And even now as of writing, the PH president is in the US, strengthening their alliance. If only China left the PH alone with their sea territories, the PH will not have to resort to allowing a substantial US military presence in their country. They would have an easier time with Taiwan, with a neutral PH.
I won't be surprised if the PH in the future will agree to give the US, proper and permanent bases, let's say reopening the Subic Naval Base (the largest US naval base back then in Asia) and the Clark Air Base.
If everyone hasn't yet noticed, China is incredibly clumsy when it comes to diplomacy. Their style is like a bull in a China shop. Recall the Chinese ambassador to France's comment about former Soviet states.

The Bashi Channel was a happy hunting grounds for US submarines in WW2. US subs decimated Japanese shipping going through there between Japan & the Dutch East indies. The Bashi Channel was a choke point for Japanese maritime shipping & most of Japan's oil came through there on heavily laden tankers. It's one of the main reasons we never had to invade Japan. US subs so depleted Japanese oil supplies, that by 1945 many of their major warships were restricted to harbors for lack of fuel. As soon as I saw this video pop up on my choice list, that's the first thing I thought of.

Also a bit of an update. Japan and the Philippines are discussing plans on setting up radar stations in Bataanes, the Philippine islands on the Basi Channel.
As a USN Veteran.....this channel TOTALLY got my attention! As I and other sailors practice in, evaluating our, and improving ourselves in attacks in S. Korea, but as I was close to retirement, we were discussing an invasion of Taiwan as well....
The point was they posed to me was .... "What If..." China were to go into Taiwan, how would you protect them?? I pointed out the same evaluation that you present here with Japan protecting the northern portion of the island, while the US, with Philippine co-operation, to the south of Taiwan in the same Bashi Channel....

In hindsight they doomed the Philippines by rejecting the protection offered by the USA and the hundreds of millions of dollars those bases brought into their economy. They lost many Islands in the South China sea to China. China already has maps depicting their maritime border as encompassing the Philippines. Now they want US bases to come back. Before they were even called their present-day names of Taiwan and Philippines, the natives of these two groups of islands have already been trading with each other for centuries. In fact there is a term for this, which the historians have dubbed the "Maritime Jade Network." Many artifacts have been unearthed in the regions of SEA, from vietnam to the Philippines and Taiwan. The latter being called the "Sa-Huynh Cultural Sphere." So blood really runs deep and thick in relation to Taiwan and the rest of southeast asia.

I’ve been on UA-cam for more than and decade now.
As a Taiwanese, I do observed many older generation Taiwanese judge or even dislike Filipino maids for some unknown reason, I'd like apologize for that, Taiwanese in general do not know much about international situation due to their limited English and unregulated media that controls by China, they only know Japan, Korea, China, US, Ukraine, and that's about it.
I personally love Filipino people, they're very hard working, friendly, well English spoken people to be around with, my mom's boss used to hire this Filipino maid who cooks amazing Taiwanese food, even my mom try to ask her how she cooks it, she's also very nice speaking English and some Mandarin to me when I was little.
I hope in the future, once Taiwan get rid of our country's name "Republic Of China", we can start forming a stronger, friendlier bond with Philippines using Taiwan as our official name. After all, we're neighbors for the past and we will be neighbors for the next hundred and thousands of years.
But currently, we're not only battling China(the CCP), but we are also battling and try to make peace with our pro China faction KMT, they both pose a threat limiting Taiwan under One China Policy, and Taiwanese people do not like it, especially after what happened in Hong Kong in 2019, people in Taiwan realized One China Policy is definitely a lie, and KMT still try to preach and sell the idea to Taiwanese people.
With that being said, hopefully the US military bases in Philippines can help us deter China and buy us more time, and hopefully it doesn't cause people of Philippines too much trouble by having more US troops stay in your country. I wish the best for all Filipinos!

Honestly, I did not think about this channel at all when thinking about factors towards the defense of Taiwan. This video puts a lot of perspective into how important owning this waterway will be to either defend or take Taiwan. I love how this video also puts a lot more perspective to the position the US currently holds against China and how that can affect an eventual invasion..

I lived in Taiwan for 7-years from 2001 to 2008 and this video is the most condensed, but accurate, review of the situation between China and Taiwan. The politics involved from beginning of WWII through to the 70's, 80's and 90's get very complex. While also interesting, discussions that include the political history get bogged down and I love how you've simply focused on economics and military reality.

Everyone is just fed up with it and after watching what happened to Hong Kong 4-5 years ago support for reunification has declined overall. They’re also many invisible factors involved: Taiwan industrialized decades before China so it was supremely wealthy in the 1980’s and much of China’s manufacturing production capacity was the result of Taiwanese investment. If it wasn’t for that big, unseen fact, China might have invaded Taiwan already. And because of that fact they might never follow through. It would devastate the Chinese economy.

Indonesia is a far younger country and it was all over the place with government ideaology in the 60's and 70's - it is still taken seriously as should Taiwan. China has less claim to Taiwan than Russia does on Ukraine. Taiwan was a post industrial society with world class manufacturing, elected government and amazing healthcare in the 1980s when the only thing manufactured in Mainland China was plastic toys and tens of millions had still not recovered from the mass murder of Chairman Mao. In Hong Kong, Mainland Chinese agitators used the democratic system to fund campaigns that slowly elected Beijing-friendly politicians into positions of power then shut down democracy - which was the true cause of that unrest. Thankfully for the independant nation of Taiwan there is a much more diverse group of demographics at play in Formosa, and with truly independant spirit that will not just lay down to an authoritarian regime. America is not a true friend. It has sparked hundreds of conflicts worldwide in its pursuit to dictate and control other countries, shaping their beliefs, altering their religions, and erasing their cultures. Wherever America goes, it imposes its own culture, often destroying everything in its path.
Marcos was not elected by the Philippines; he was positioned by American influence, just as Zelensky was in Ukraine.
The way China treated the Philippines pretty much made or baked their chances of taking Taiwan. If they focused on the country's relevance in their ambitions, the situation would be very much different. Remember that former Philippine President Duterte already aligned the country with China and squared up against the US, until the new one PBBM saw the excessiveness of China's abusive and violating actions and chose to leverage power and defensive capabilities by becoming closer to the latter. Had the former scenario remained, China would not hesitate into taking action right away. But that's not the case is it? The CCP/Mainland Chinese Government neglected the importance of their neighbor's favorability, they basically gave away Taiwan independence on a silver platter.
I read somewhere that even NATO is eyeing China's presence in the UKR-RUS war, calling out the irony of being a "peace-keeping nation" whilst literally arming for an invasion. China is not only vulnerable but really on a losing game. They're facing too many greater odds. This is a mere speculation, but what do you guys think of the possibility that the PLA is being pressured by their executives to still call an invasion despite these greater odds? Like a mob forcing the lackeys to do the dirty work? It's really hard to see the common Chinese population supporting these obviously greed driven maneuvers of their government unless they wage a dictatorship over their country (maybe they already have?)
With that said, if the invasion still pushes forth, China is going to risk it all. I wouldn't be surprised if we get something like a Tianmen part two if CCP forces this war despite their people's (probable?) unwillingness. Also, let us take note of the fact that China's interest does not only lie on southern waters, They have other border conflicts with neighbors in different directions that may be very interested in taking advantage of their vulnerable position.
On another note, let's say China's goal is not really "reunification." There are some analysts who already called out the possibility of China's hegemonic ambitions. What if Taiwan's really just a first step? What if they are not only preparing for Taiwan, but to take over all major positions in South China Sea, particularly the West Philippine Sea? Maybe this is quite a stretch, but think about it. A war with Taiwan and the US will justify any military move they make and if they maximize it, they have the manpower to do so. To sum it all up, it's not really much of a conflict with other nations, it's really just China being a fried lizard wiener and annoying everyone and risking world destruction.
Duterte didn't "align" to China, it gave a space for potential cooperation, if we "aligned" to China, we wounldn't have expanded our relations with Japan, Korea and India, where China considered them hostiles.

The larger significance of the Bashi Channel is its depth. It makes US SSBNs (ballistic nuclear submarines) undetectable while headed towards the South China Sea. Once there US SSBNs may remain undetectable while less than 200miles from Guangzhou and 300 miles from Hong Kong. Their depressed trajectory SLBMs (nuclear ballistic missiles launched from SSBNs) have very short flight times. We are talking under ten minutes from order received to impact made.

If war were to ever break out between China and Taiwan, I can't even begin to comprehend the sheer scale of the naval-humanitarian corridor from Taiwan to the Philippines. The current population of Taiwan is 23.57 Million, even if half that were to be refugees that would rival the India-Pakistan partition of 14 million displaced. Would the PLA honor a temporary cease fire? Where in the northern island of Luzon would you house 10-12 million civilian refugees? for how long? food, medicine, housing, work permits, language/cultural barriers. It'd be a humanitarian nightmare unless the allies plan ahead.

We have dense jungles and mountainous positions in Cordillera Administrative Region and Sierra Madre in north east Luzon they are good defensive positions it is high ground and rough terrain. Our soldiers will mow down their invading Ships with Brahmos batteries and now American HIMARS systems. The only thing that will give them the edge are Nukes 1 Nuke on Luzon would vaporize us leaving Manila at a mercy.

How does this apply to a theoretical invasion of Taiwan by China?

@@haochentrends You do know that the MDT extends up to the Public Vessels or Aircraft of each countries. i.e. The Military/Public Aircraft/Vessel of the US or Philippines getting attacked by China will trigger the MDT. This is one of the reason why China can't attack Philippine Vessel in South China Sea.

The US entering into hostilities would not produce any treaty obligations on the Philippine side. When the US attacked Iraq and Iraq launched missiles at US planes, was the Philippes obligated to join the war to protect the US? Treaties are written in a very precise way for very good reasons.
the ph korea and australia will be treaty bound to assist the americans. nz also has one but the us had a disagreement with a former nz gov. altho saw news recently that nz might be warming back to the idea of US alliance. this was the compromise done in the pacific, unlike NATO that enmeshed all countries. In the pacific it became something like "an attack on the US is an attack on all" the japanese has a technical carveout because they are technically not allowed to have an armed forces.
The new bases are actually more northern than what was shown here. Its in cagayan province the northern most tip of the main island of luzon, which makes it only a couple of hundred miles away from taiwan.

Hi, I would just like to comment that the graphics for the presentation are indeed amazing. That said, I feel that flying through the area from various directions and orbiting from every angle and speed detracts from the experience, as adjusting and reorienting myself around the new view would take some time. For example, once you mentioned Kaohsiung, I kept trying to find it everytime a new view came around. I feel sticking to a standard view first and orienting from that might help. Just my two cents. Thank you, and again, excellent content either way!

I understand and appreciate your point, but I would encourage you to pause the video and orient as necessary, and possibly rewatch the video a few times as this is really an internet treasure of a YT channel.
Especially since we see topographic maps used, looking at the land from multiple directions is really useful when considering the issues at hand.

With its geographical location, the Philippines is no doubt a country where military planners cannot afford to do away with to have an advantage in gaining control of any access to the Indo-Pacific region. The US already established 2 "bases" in the northern most province(not island) of the Philippines last month. They can easily control this Bashi Channel in case of Chinese invasion to Taiwan.
