    @nicolasraimo started to watch your videos 5 years ago and bought a used 22kwh Zoe to test the waters - having been persuaded that we could probably live with an EV as a second car. This time last year we upgraded the Zoe to an MG ZS EV and now we've swapped our diesel estate for a Skoda Enyaq. So a full EV house now, and you provided the information and reassurances to get the transition going and see it through to completion.
    Thank you! 👍 😁

    I'm an OVO Anytime customer and my current car charge rate is 6p/kWhr. I understand that their rates vary across the country. My car has V2L so I can plug devices into the car to take advantage of the cheaper rate. For instance I always plug the vacuum cleaner into the car to clean it.

      Nigel, if it is your wall box that is compatible any AC that comes out is at the cheap rate. Yes I have tested it. For obvious reasons I can't post about it but I'm sure you can work it out for yourself. Not that you should do it. I did it just for research purposes.

    I am another Ovo Anytime customer and I have found that, provided you don't expect to charge during the late afternoon/early evening peak, you can charge your car during the day up to 5pm at the 7p rate. Clearly if you are prepared to time-shift big washing loads you can probably offset the higher Octopus rates and if you can afford to plug the car in during the day (rather than using it), there is an unspecified benefit if they choose to charge the car "early". I think both rates are attractive - the key thing is to avoid the full capped 28p rate and especially the ridiculous rates seen at public chargers.

    Hi Nicholas, I have listened to most of your videos but could not find a direct reference to those who are not using an electric vehicle but they want to use the cheapest rate on the market for off peak electricity in order to complement their "fully Independent" PV system (absolutely not connected to the grid for exporting) especially during the few months where England is lacking of sun radiations. What I mean is using the energy for the charging just like a normal appliance with the benefits of the cheapest rate as I'm not sure if Octopus offers that.
    Perhaps it would be not a bad idea for you to make a video on this subject, unless of course you've already done so and I missed it). Thanks for your work 🙏

    Do you have any advice on how to get Octopus to install a smart meter? I’ve been asking for one consistently for as number of years. They installed one for my neighbour recently, but seem intent on ignoring me.

      I emailed Greg directly- same issue for me, over a year of repeatedly asking (pleading!) and was repeatedly told there were no engineers in the area - yet when the Octopus installer came to fit them, he was astonished, as he said he’d been fitting them in our area for 18 months and had loads of free appointments during the entirety of that time!!
      He was quite alarmed as they weren’t getting enough work - and suggested there was something wrong with Octopus’ booking systems.

    I have a Renault Zoe and a Rolec charger neither of which are compatible with Intelligent Octopus Go. My question is, can I just set scheduling in the car (or worst case, physically plug in) to charge at the lower rate between 23:30 and 05:30, or does the car, or charger, actually have to talk to Octopus to get those rates?

    • @AndrewEbling
      @AndrewEbling 6 місяців тому

      You need a compatible charger or car to switch to Intelligent Go and you need to use it to continue to get the cheap rate. Octopus Go is best if you don't have a compatible car or charger and don't want to pay for a charger install.

    Based on your recommendations I've recently shifted from EDF E7 to Octopus E7. I have a 5 port smart meter though which feeds my separate consumer unit for storage heating and hot water. I now want to shift to OI ( have Tesla and home battery) Can Octopus remotely convert my meter to single rate on BOTH outputs so it can work with OI. I will of course need individual timers for heaters and hw but that would be far cheaper than major rewiring.

      Economy 7 or ‘white meter’ tariff is one of the most overlooked value tariffs IMO. Octopus rates for Economy 7 is 16p per unit overnight for a whopping 8.5 hours (11pm - 7:30am) which is great if you’re using it for home storage heaters & water heating, and you don’t need a smart meter.

    It would take a lot to get me to leave octopus. Never had such good service from a company. They extended our octopus go 4.5p tarrif for a year after energy prices sky rocketed because they forgot to send an email saying the tarrif was due to end. The free electric periods are amazing, we regularly get 4-10 hours of electric free each week. Every time we've had an issue theres been very generous financial compensation without even asking. I once had hours missing from a saving session equalling about £3, they sent over £25 credit immediately. Octopus think about customer service for the long term and inderstand that over time short term losses to keep customers happy will be reimbursed plus extra over the long term

    I’ve been on Intelligent Octopus Go for a while now and my home storage battery is set to charge to 100% overnight on cheap rate. While it’s great seeing what extra hours you get when you plug the car in, I’ve found the extra hours are not actually as useful as you might think.
    The car charges during the extra hours, BUT the car will charge overnight anyway so there’s little benefit of the early charging. The storage battery will supply the house loads until it starts to recharge overnight, so the house does not use the extra cheap hours. So the extra hours are only useful if you don’t have a home storage battery, or your battery is too small to supply the house for the full day, or you can be bothered to check what extra hours you’ve got, and manually turn on extra loads to use the cheap energy.
    The main benefit of Intelligent Octopus Go is the 6 hours of cheap energy overnight at 7.5p, which is excellent and a great benefit of EV ownership.
    Note you need to set your car charger to ‘avoid drain’ from the battery otherwise your car will drain your home battery when it’s switched on during the extra hours. The simplest way to do this is by wiring the car charger on the ‘grid’ side of the battery, not the ‘home’ side, so the battery does not know when the car is charging.

    • @NicolasRaimo
      @NicolasRaimo  6 місяців тому +1

      You need to look at home assistant to stop battery draining into car/house during extra hours and instead charge
