In my honest opinion, Jemma Redgrave embraced Nicholas Courtney's legacy so well. It fits her like a glove at this point. Her dialogue with the Grand Serpent and what UNIT meant to her gave me instant chills. I also loved how Osgood was acknowledged too.
Jemma Redgrave absolutely stole the show in her scenes, absolutely brilliant performance! And seeing Kate outsmart the Grand Serpent was so satisfying! Also I feel so happy knowing I was right - I KNEW Chibnall wasn't going to keep UNIT out of the picture, even at the time of them being "shut down" I felt like there was going to be MORE to it in the future and guess what? That is what happened and even bigger than I expected!
She manages to portray strength, vulnerability, compassion, intelligence, and charm, often with no more than a look and a few select words. She's so believable, and likable as the Head of UNIT, and like the Doctor, you always know she's got more than a few tricks up her sleeve. Bravo Jemma!
When she said 'I see you' I got chills. She's such a badass.
The second Resolution mentioned UNIT got shut down I knew it would be back swinging.

Loved the sign outside the headquarters, pretty much spot on to the old one. Nice hearing the Brig offscreen too. This was a neat little celebration of Unit through the decades.
It's especially delightful that it is Nicholas Courtney's actual voice. I first thought it was a line recorded by Jon Culshaw, as he is the new voice actor for Big Finish (and I think he's doing a great job at it), but the fact that it was Courtney's voice is even better.
@@timrob12 after he finished his time on dr who in 1988, he joined the big finish crew, he was there for quite some time in the 2000's and his role in Sarah Jane so there are recordings of his voice around

I love how humble she is! She states people’s love for the Brigadier as the reason people loved her character. Of course that was a factor but in actuality the character wouldn’t have been nearly as popular if she hadn’t played the role incredibly well. I am so hyped to see more of Kate in the finale and I hope to see Osgood too.
So true, what a lovely actress she is. The casting was perfect, she even shares some similar features to Nicholas Courtney. She's being very modest, but the affection for her character is all due to her commanding portrayal.
That scene we had almost 3 years ago that everyone was sad about was all for this! Best news!

So great seeing this character transcend Doctors, showrunners and eras!
Definitely helps that the character was created by Chibnall (Power of Three), just like River Song was created by Moffat but first appeared in RTD's era. Hopefully RTD also makes use of Kate.

I adore Jemma Redgrave, so it's delightful to see her back. I'm just really hoping we get something with Kate and Thirteen interacting or someone realizing this isn't how things are supposed to go.

Old-Timer Fan Here (40+ years): "My son, being such a massive fan, it's just so great that, you know, Jodie's his Doctor." Could be PR bunk, but even still, that took my breath away. We ALL remember who our first Doctor was (Tom Baker, Hello!), remember the moment we first fell in love with this character, and to see that passed to a new generation, with new faces, new possibilities?! I love it so much!!! THAT is what Doctor Who IS!!!

So powerful! It's also a statement for something that every person who shares love for this show agrees: Doctor Who is bigger than anyone. It's bigger than one showrunner, one doctor, one companion, one bad story. For each not so good story, there are dozens of masterpieces. For each masterpiece, an unthinkable amount of even better stories to tell in the future. The joy of Doctor Who is believing that this world created by William Hartnell and others will live on and surpass our lifetime, our children's lifetime, and be a piece of art that still means something to someone somewhere. I even teared a little just thinking about it now. Long live to Doctor Who, long live to us fans!
I always find it funny how the nicest actors can play the meanest characters so believable. That´s talent in my eyes.

As someone who is working on collecting Classic Who and DVD and heavily encouraging New Who fans to do the same, this episode has been a delight, to get to see the old UNIT again and have it combine with the UNIT is brilliant. I'm just fanboying over the shot of the old sign outside (I wonder if that was filmed at the exact location used for The Three Doctors and The Five Doctors), just because it's such a delight to see it again. Equally, the inclusion of a Nicholas Courtney voice clip (which I first thought was a new recording by Jon Culshaw) is a nice little tribute to The Brigadier and it is great that Nick and Jemma, two generations of UNIT can be credited together for once.
P.S. I'm jealous of the extras in the 'classic UNIT' scenes as it must've been a delight for them to dress up as the old actors from the 70's. I wish I could've been part of those scenes.

One thing. Lethbridge Stewart didn't join UNIT until later, as he said he joined UNIT between Web of Fear and Invasion, unless that got retconned at some later point. The clip has him a member while he's still enlisted.

I feel that they are slightly creepy but you are right they are the creepiest for a while

I like how the dissolution of UNIT in the Resolution Dalek episode was alluded to here thanks to the Grand Serpent's shenanigans.
I'm beginning to have faith in the long term plans for the series going forward... they arent just winging it like so many think.

Unit should become a permanent fixture like it used to be in Doctor Who
I grew up with Unit being a huge part of Doctor Who in the 70s, and they brought back tiny parts when show rebooted in 2005, but even then, I really wish they would bring all the living staff back, like Harry Sullivan, Joe Grant, just to name a few, and just dedicate an 8 part story involving not just Unit, but some of the hardest monsters they had to deal with, like the gold people from the John Pertwee episode and even the chance to undo Earth's destruction in the alternate reality Inferno. Daleks always scared me when I was a kid, but the Inferno segment, that was so intense. For those who haven't seen the old Doctor Who's, Inferno is a 7 part series where the third doctor, John Pertwee, was helping with a drilling experiment, where the UK was competing with other countries to be the first to drill down to the core. The serial was so long, because many things had taken place. For one they dug so far, they released a virus from deep within the crator and worse, an attempt on the doctors life sends him and the heart of the TARDIS he way trying to repair, to an alternate earth, slightly different timeline where the UK was Nazi run. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but it's similar to the first back to the future, as because the console was at the alternate universe, and the power supply for it in the police box, he lacked the power to get back. Mix in a Return of the living dead to the show, which full moon entertainment obviously stole part of their movie from this old show, you have a story that constantly keeps you at the edge of your seat, only thing missing, is the zombies shouting Brains.... Because their nice and spicy!!!
Inferno is one of the all time greats if not the best ever. Superb acting and now it reminds me of Fracking even though it was made in 1970. An absolute classic.
@@nickdavies8197 I actually had to look Fracking up. I'm also an old Buck Roger's and BattleStar Galactica fan, and until today, I only knew the term from the old and new show, and was like no.... They don't obviously mean the term Im thinking of lol. I was such a fan, back in 1985, I secured funding to build a almost real Dalek, using plans a friend who works for the BBC gave me using a fiber plexiglass material that at that time, was a complicated process and needed special plaster molds, covered with a rubber liner, similar to mask making process. Getting the funding wasn't easy either, as we did not have the internet back then, but the startings of it called a BBS, which I ran a multi chat CNet Amiga system. The engine to drive it was to be a hero robot system from Heathkit. My parents, or actually my mom, had to do the ordering as my countys laws didn't allow for miners (Children under 18) to own a credit card, and Visa/Master debit cards did not exist at that time, and all parts required an adult to order, especially the one part my science teacher threw a conniption once they realized what it was, and I gave them a copy of Tom Baker Genesis of the Daleks, which was not a good move on my part, especially when the last part was actually I believe a nitrogen laser. I had tried for a Taser weapon first, as these had just started coming out, and a TV show called That's Incredible did a story on them. I wanted a real laser, a probe stone light may have given the flash effect, where as a laser of any type would not, and it was the military who funded part of the science fair, so I wanted something that would be a winner, and I knew a baking soda volcano wouldn't cut it. My teacher deemed not just the laser unsafe, but my entire Dalek project as he passed that doctor who episode around to the other science teachers, and never expected, even without a laser, that the one episode I gave him, would put the fear of God into all of them. Remember, there was no such things as school shootings back then, so if a project of this scope had any chance of getting approval, it was back then, and no way now a days. Lucky for me, my mom refused to buy any parts, until we had gotten the approval, which obviously, we didn't.
So the next plan, my sister liked even less. It involved me taking her $300 wooden Barbie dream house, and converting it to a solar home. I had already as a favor, motorized the elevator to go to each floor, using four motors I took from my broken big track. It wasn't hard to show it was broken, when it accidentally fell from 4 stories onto pavement below, by sheer accident ;) I had already wired lights using LEDs and ceiling fans, I just needed to switch from the model train power supply, to a 6 and 12 volt battery storage system, and a 100 watt solar panel set. Those $300 sets you see on Amazon today sold for $30,000 and was given a 1 foot by 1 foot panel, and told I can have it if I can put it to good use, which my sister was greatful for as it saved her doll house from becoming my next project. In the end, made a solar digital scoreboard what won first place, but the principal ran off with not just the award and check, the btard stole my scoreboard as well!!! To bad I didn't make the Dalek lol.
@@nickdavies8197 Sorry for extra spam. I decided to rewatch the inferno story on Amazon. They have a 7 day free trial at moment, so might decide to watch all the old ones later, but for now, discovered the BBC cleaned up and enhanced the quality a lot. No longer looks almost black and white, but very good quality. Not HD, but at least very nice, including the sound that scared the crap outa me because I forgot surround sound was tuned up way to much lol! Was listening to chop suey right before.

Jemma Redgrave was definately a highlight.
Kate stewart had BIG shoes to fill, but she has as much respect as her father had. You can tell that she's a REAL (Lethbridge)Stewart. I listen to the BF audios.

Kate's journey is even harder than Redgrave realised. When we first meet her in Downtime she's an unemployed single mother living on an unregistered houseboat.
Now that is a shirt worthy of Colin Baker's Doctor, tasteless and made for the colour blind.

Why does no one talk about how stylish Chris is?
So I guess now when the 3rd doctor is exiled to earth and has his Tardis' dematerialization circuit removed, the brigadier or someone else at unit can see his Tardis and go "oh we found one of those ages ago" and then the 3rd doctor can just take 13s Tardis and fly away. In space at least since his knowledge of time travel was also taken away.

@@rosemary_rose0 Well random people in unit don't have the key, and I'm pretty sure the Tardis key doesn't change when the Tardis does so the 3rd Doctor would be able to get in. Either way it was more of a joke comment then a serious one.
@@SymphonyDemons third doctors key is much different to 13’s key btw so it wouldnt happen nonetheless
@@rosemary_rose0 Looked it up out of curiosity and aparrently in one of the books it's stated that a Tardis key doesn't need to be able to fit in the lock, if it is paired to that Tardis it will still open, although that is a one off thing that is never mentioned again. In time of the Rani the Doctor's key manages to open the Rani's Tardis even though it isn't even paired with his key, and in 13's 2nd episode she just tells the Tardis she lost her key and it let her in. So if in this just for fun hypothetical the 3rd Doctor would definitely be able to get into 13's Tardis if it was an emergancy at the very least since under normal circumstances if his key didn't work 13's Tardis probably wouldn't let him in since it would mess up the timeline.

There's a Big Finish spinoff, features some interesting characters including someone called The Curator, oh... er... you're not supposed to know about that... ok every one reading this message has won an all expenses paid trip to see the private vault in the Tower of London
@@JohnImrie big finish is one thing but A TV drama following unit investigations alien and human threats would be great. And it wouldn't need to hang on one character like Sarah Jane adventures or Torchwood kinda does

Why would Chibnall get rid of UNIT forever? It's obvious that he had some kind of plan for it, people complain about everything in this era smh
Yeah, and they act like there weren't any faults in previous seasons... Torchwoods introduction in S2 was (in my opinion) a bit rocky. We don't talk about Love & Monsters ever XD
The first half of S3 was... At least weird, in my opinion, and it has episodes I very, very rarely rewatch (Daleks in Manhattan two parter especially)
S4 was perfect, bye XD
The Hybrid was... I try hard to forget it every time I have to watch it.
I could go on, but I enjoyed the seasons nonetheless, and I enjoyed S11 and S12 as well, and Flux is fluxing brilliant!

Completely agree. I said from the beginning that he was only removing UNIT so that in resolution the Doctor had to stop the Dalek alone. People forget that Chibnall created the character of Kate Stewart and arguably brought UNIT back fully into Doctor Who in that episode!
@@Angeldemon9 yeah. It's his character and it was him that brought back the organization. He's done a lot of great things for the show, the spinoffs and classic who, even before his tenure as showrunner. I've seen everything Chris Chibnall has ever done, even outside of the Doctor Who universe for a very long time now and I've always trusted his ability as a writer and have never doubted him. I'm one of the few people that really loved S11 and 12 for what they were and Flux is just brilliant. It's not all perfect but nothing in Doctor Who has ever been perfect, even the beloved Moffat and RTD eras and I have less problems with this era than I have with those and that's already a plus in my book. The good and the bad are what make Doctor Who for me in all the 45yrs I've watched this show and I love it all, that will never change, no matter where it goes in the future.
@@TheLibrarianOG1 Exactly! People act like all the other series were perfect. Both RTD and Moffat's eras had some horrifically bad episodes and in my opinion while I loved Capaldi's Doctor and Bill that last season of Moffats wasn't great, tried to be too clever and ended up being a bit naff (besides the final which was brilliant).
I started watching Who during Tennant but have since watched loads of the classic series (Tom Baker is my all time favourite Doctor). Yeah Chibnall has written some bad episodes and bad villains but people need to stop pretending that he's the only show runner to have done so. Torchwood was an amazing spin off and he reintroduced UNIT and Kate Stewart who is one of my favourite characters played by one of my favourite actresses and is a fan favourite. But people who are against Chibnall and Jodie like to selectively chose what they talk about when discussing this era and ignore all of the good things and good episodes just so they can try and pass their opinions off as facts!
Very much like HYDRA in SHEILD, we have the Great Serpent inside UNIT.

Wait hold on the birth of UNIT, didn’t the brigadier make UNIT with his team in invasion, with Patrick Troughton, and because of the great intelligence fight that’s the reason why UNIT was created and it was created in 1967 but now your telling me its now supposed to be earlier than that in 1958, sorry no I don’t think I’m enjoying this very much. And also with the division and how the Doctor is a weeping Angel and the timeless child I’ve kinda lost my marbles, Anyway So the Doctor was born to be special in series 12 nope The Doctor isn’t special The Doctor is like who he/she is because of his actions and now the Doctor isn’t just some guy who stole a box and ran away and saved the world but somehow it now means that Doctor was born to be who he is. NOPE Jesus Christ Russell undo this it’s just stupid, also who ever doesn’t like this comment I don’t care what you say about the Doctor as who She is now what counts is the history and yes build up but don’t rip the cannon up in the air and expect everyone to be okay with it, it’s kinda like Chibbs reached through the screen and punch me in the face. 0:58 (sorry for the long rant like if you kinda agree with me) (don’t quote me on the new series stuff, because I kinda lost interest since series 12 episode 1 & 2 spyfall)
So when people moaned at chibnall for disbanding them they're gonna take back that particular complaint because it was the original plan for a return?

Is Chris Chibnall taking fashion cues from the ghost of JNT?
There's nothing more entertaining than watching Chibnall acting like he ALWAYS intended to bring back UNIT and it totally wasn't something he did because of the immense fan backlash, mhm, nope.
I think what he says tracks though because he does not pay attention to what those online are saying, he doesn't read reviews (for good reason) and he is a classic Doctor Who fan so that alone made me think "yeah, UNIT being shut down isn't permanent"
Chris has said he doesn’t look at fan responses. Plus I really don’t think he’d write a whole villain and centre the end of Flux around UNIT just because of the backlash.
As if Chibnall would change something he wrote into the show because fans didn't like it.
