Hello, UA-cam suggested your channel to me, so I took the bait, I have been currently following along with your Benjamin ficus massacre rooting/air layer mini greenhouse series, and have been enjoying it. Thank you for sharing your journey in this hobby.
Thank you for the comment! I'm way behind on videos at the moment as I was sick the past couple weeks and then I'm moving here in a couple more weeks so it's a little chaotic. But once I moved into the new place I'm going to be dropping a lot more content. Thanks again!
I don't know how restrained yourself from hacking those roots more. I would have gone scorched earth on them and told the plant to sink or swim. Your patience will be rewarded in the future.
No believe me I know what you mean. I reach that point with trees alot. Especially if they linger on for awhile and I baby them. Eventually I'm like, ok just live or die already.
I think I might have embraced the mess and tried creating an exposed root bonsai, letting them all grow and fuse together eventually. The way you did it almost reminds me of the way people develop roots on adeniums, just a flush cut and let new roots grow.
Went through the same thing with my regular Ficus Ben's. Potatoes everywhere. I've a single trunk and a triple trunk that's variegated. I went really drastic on the single trunk, shocked it pretty good. It dropped all its leaves and is now starting to bounce back. The triple is about 2 weeks out, not as drastic but it was still a lot. Did some adjustments to bring the trunks closer together. So far waiting to see how it handles the root work.
I've experienced that before where it almost does, but then bounces back. I made the mistake of trimming it AGAIN too soon and totally killed it. Now I know when that happens, let it grow wild all year. That little tree gave it's life to teach me that. Lol
Those roots are a real mess. But over time you will be able to remove more and more and change the rootbase entirely. One day this little tree will look pretty. I'm sure :)
Thank you! And yeah that's what I'm hoping for. I couldn't believe just how root bound this thing was when I took the pot off. Never seen one that bad.
Nice work taming the beast brother! What about a ground layer just above the fat-tater root plane? You’ve already got a few mature air roots coming out there. Just a thought.
Thanks! And that's not a bad idea. I might do a test run on a few other lesser trees first to make sure I know what time doing. Never actually tried a ground layer before.
@@BonsaiBoise 👍🏼 Same concept as air layer, but easier and typically more effective. Nigel has a few videos on it. And Ian at back garden bonsai is currently showing one off with a pomegranate. Good luck, Toy
Watching you is so calming. Learning what to cut is the best part
Well thank you!
The coolness and restraint you showed with both root pruning & canopy is admirable. I would have taken a shot of Jim Beam and went crazy.
Thanks! I saved my meltdown for off camera 😳
All Aussie ear a longneck of VB n let's get to hacking, cheers
Great work, absolutely love the root base.
Thanks! I've got a ways to go to get rid of the extra "potato" parts, but a great start.
I loved that lower branch but that's bonsai for U great stuff dude keep em coming cheers
Thank you!
I love the end result!
Thank you! This one was a good find. And it was a lot of fun.
Great video. Thanks
Thank you!

@@BonsaiBoise it's all good, you have plenty of content for me to enjoy until then.

Thought about but opt'd for the more traditional look on this one. Still want to do a root over rock someday though.

I love my too littles, not sure why but allot of people hate them
This is the first one I found here in town! I'm sure they're around here or there but I've never seen them anywhere until now.

Hey Mike, I have some 2yr old ficus cuttings. Should I remove all of the existing soil from the roots when I repot them?
I usually do, but only if it's in good healthy shape, and only during the growing season.
