Doug never makes fun of Robin Williams. He makes fun of a movie and a character in that movie, and I think he has every right to. The points are still accurate, and the jokes are still funny, even after Robin Williams' sad death.

Personally I don't see anything wrong with Robin Williams performance, he was fine and he tried his best but this film really screwed up Patch's portrayal in such an offensive manner that even Robin Williams couldn't save this movie

I agree; quality is slowly but surely creeping back into the movies. I was jaded with Hollywood for a long time, thinking they'd turned into nothing but lazy, formulaic sellouts. Then again, my taste in entertainment is different from most people's today: I love silent films/films from the 1930s-1940s and I read authors like Edgar Allan Poe and Victor Hugo in my spare time and love fairytales and legends like the stories of King Arthur. However, with movies like "Midnight in Paris", "Saving Mr. Banks", and "Frozen", I'm starting to have faith that Hollywood is getting back to its roots as storytellers. I'd love to take classes in screenwriting (I've only done playwriting and acting for the stage thus far) because once I learn how, I have dozens of film ideas in my head that would get the movies back to the more "old school" stuff they used to be. .
Honestly, i think if Artists could balance both their creative complexitiy with a modern day 21st century understanding of economics there could be middle ground in which you could appease the money hungry executives with quality. It's a business after all and i think they're starting to understand (the execs), that they need to innovate because we have a thriving independent market and alternative sources, also choice through the internet. It starts with perception; if that's shifted the market has to adjust or die, Ie: the music industry. If you're a fan of 'The hollywood reporter' they have 'roundtables' and this passing yr they had the executives from all the major studios talking openly about the reality and their fears. I wish you luck, theater is demanding but truly rewarding. Haha not that i'd personally know the strains of theater though it's one of the few Artistic cornerstones with its integrity intact. About your likes, i'm a fan of the golden age my self though i need to familiarize my self with the great novellas i've neglected (some you named).
The fingers thing toward the beginning is beyond stupid and defeats the entire premise of the film. The guy holds up 4 fingers and tells Patch to look at him, not his fingers. He says he sees 8 fingers and the guy tells him that's a better answer because it doesn't conform to the objective consensus... The problem is that there are only 4 fingers and obviously, he sees the same 4 fingers from 2 different angles, thus creating the illusion that there are more. The implied message is that by focusing on the person rather than the problem, you cloud the issue and get the wrong answer, which is the OPPOSITE of the point the movie is trying to make.
cyanmanta Agreed. The fact that Patch saying the guy has 8 fingers when he clearly has 4 is treated as him being a non conformist even though it's clear the guy has 4 fingers makes no sense.
cyanmanta The thing with this I think isn't that the guy HAS 8 fingers, but that Patch concentrates on the person the fingers are attached to rather than the fingers themselves. Its not the best segue and obviously doesn't get the point across very clearly, but this is actually really important as at the time patient-centered care wasn't really done. The medical staff would treat the illness without really worrying about the patient. Nowadays, patent-centered care is seen as very important and is taught from the very beginning, but back when the movie is set it just wasn't done, which is one of the reasons Patch made such a splash; he treated the whole person, not just the illness they had. The writers could have explained this better, since I never really understood it until I started my nursing classes, but once you understand where they're coming from it actually hold a lot of water.
Oh yeah, definitely agree. It was really poorly explained, and a little difficult to apply to medicine. There's a reason the real Patch Adams doesn't like this movie.

In my very humble opinion, I think this movie earns more defense than After Earth would because Robin Williams still seems to TRY in this movie. The flaws are extremely apparent, and it doesn't excuse the fact that he depicted a hard working doctor as just a clown, but truthfully a lot of those flaws lies more in the writing and direction than it is with Robin Williams himself. I feel like I still see him trying his damndest to put in passion into this role, even if he was playing it the same way as every other role. It really, really feels like Robin Williams was trying hard with this movie... But looking at After Earth, that movie was completely built around sucking Smith-Dick. The performance given by Will Smith in that movie is just god awful, and has NOTHING to do with his real talents. He was Shamalyzed for After Earth, and there are dozens of other movies where he does phenomenally better work than he does in After Earth. In Patch Adams, we can at least see that Robin Williams was trying, and he was still giving off a feel of charisma to the point where he felt like a real character, even prompting NC to yell at the CHARACTER in some points and not the actor. In After Earth, there's just absolutely nothing redeemable about it. If Will Smith died anytime soon (which I pray he doesn't, don't want ANY early death on anyone), After Earth wouldn't be remembered with pride, it'd be shamefully hidden away because that movie blatantly did nothing but stroke the Smith ego, and we ALL know that has nothing to do with Will Smith. Granted I think the 'hate' on any review just because the main actor had sadly passed away never makes any logical sense. A lot of the flaming are just trolls trying to start things, or people trying to vent out emotions for what might've been one of their favorite actors. Whoa I did not mean to rant...

It's so great you can acknowledge that! I'm tired of folks switching their opinions when death occurs. Robin definitely put his all into this, and fortunately that's not the big problem. The problem is in the writing, the direction, and the general disrespect for Hunter Adams' work. I think Robin was an ideal casting choice, but the rest of the film just can't hold water.
2:30 "Do you find that funny, Hunter? Making fun of a man's infirmity?" Great point by Nostalgia Critic (and the therapist). William's character pontificates about how Beanie should be treated with a little more dignity and respect then spends the next minute or two making Beanie the butt of several jokes. This makes Williams look like a massive asshole and it completely undermines whatever he had to say about dignity and respect. Did no one in this production see how incredibly tasteless it was to use a catatonic patient as a comedy prop?
It's worse because catatonic individuals are fully aware of their surroundings and in the event they wake up, they're not happy if they learn they've been messed with while they were catatonic. And the kicker? _Robin Williams knew this_ because he worked on a movie involving catatonia before this movie. You'd think he'd express more reluctance to go through with that joke.
Yeah. I get when people say, you should treat people with handicaps the same way you would any other person (as far as it is possible) as to integrate them into the group and make them feel human but I think this could've been done in a less offending way. It's like joking about the weight or looks of a person. But even then, that person could at least (in theory) fight/joke back.

Add onto the fact that the studio promised Hunter Adams that some of the profits the movie made would be donated to his hospital. Big surprise: he didn't receive a single penny.

For those who may not know, the real ideas of Hunter Adams are indeed based around humour, but there's much more to it than just clowning around with patients to make them laugh. It's more about emphasising the emotional wellbeing and the comfort of patients just as much as their physical wellbeing. It's not necessarily that the film misrepresented his ideas, as much as it horribly oversimplified them to "Laughter is the best medicine, hoho!". And he did actually create the free community hospital in real (which apparently ran for 12 years, not too shabby), but not until AFTER he had graduated.
2:43. You want to know the really fucked up thing about that scene? When people go into catatonic states like that, they are still perfectly aware of what's going on around them...he can hear every joke being made at his expense...wow.
It makes me wonder if the writers actually knew what a catatonic state was or not. If they did, it makes them really sadistic. If they didn't, it makes them morons who need to do more research.

"Awakenings" is a much better medicine film with Robin Williams in it. Superb acting by Mr. Williams, and Mr. DeNiro. I highly recommend it over this film.
Just wanted to say: Psychiatrists ARE medical doctors. They go to medical school and then specialize in mental health. You are thinking of psychologists.

A monkey."_ When Carin shares her molestation story with Patch, it's the first time in the movie we see him without a wiseass quip or some hopelessly simplistic slogan (which is what makes Critic's monkey routine at that point so hilarious). Sometimes bad things happen to good people and the writers of this movie didn't have a grown-up answer to that.
I miss Robin Williams as much as the next guy, but I honestly don't think that we should just ignore the bad moments of his career. By acknowledging the bad, we can better appreciate the good, and when he got it right, he really got it right.
11:15 -I think that sums up the major problem of the movie. They make it seem like a doctor can either be an uptight, insensitive douchebag with no bedside manner whatsoever, or a buffoon who makes his/her patients laugh, but doesn't practice medicine at all on them (you'll notice the option of being a doctor who relates to his/her patients with a reasonable amount of bedside manner while still actually treating their illnesses isn't even brought up as a possibility).
#1 they are medical students the whole time in the movie the fact that they are treating people is highly illegal as the movie even states #2 hunter (patch) adams actually stated he doesnt like the film because it makes him look like an idiot when in reality he was a very good medical student practicing medicine normally #3 the girl who died was actually a guy in real life they just wanted to have some romance for the sake of it

We had to watch this movie in English class a few years back. While all of my classmates were laughing and crying at it I was quoting the review to myself. When the movie was over and we were asked what our opinions were, I just said it was fine because I didn't want to have to explain myself to a room full of people who actually liked it.
R.I.P. Phillip Seymour Hoffman who played the most supportive student who talk balls to Patch Adams that you can study or don't study and he's more better than him. Every single time The Critic mentions orthodoxy and its respective levels I lose it. This, along with Tom and Jerry, are his best reviews. Both passionate, funny as hell and his criticisms are brilliantly articulated.
This is one of my favorite Nostalgia Critic reviews, despite being comedically hilarious, it also completely tears the entire movie's weak substance apart, pointing out every glaring bit of carelessness in it so well.
I work as a private grounds keeper for a dotoctor that own a plot of land across from the hospital he works at as a surgeon, and he plans to operate a restaurant and hotel for patient's familys so in a way I work for a non idiotic version of path adams
My gawd mate I hope he didnt take his own life cuz it made this movie even more tragic. It be like he knew, as I do, want a mental ward is like, gave up hope and just ended it all. I you and many are gonna miss him. Unlike what this review says, this is a bad movie, but its not cuz of Robin Williams who does well in it regardless. May he rest well forever.

This is the most genuinely angry I think I've ever seen Mr Critic get! Feels like he wan't even acting during most of this, you can feel the intense hate in his voice almost all of the way through!
For everyone that insults the critic because robin williams is dead....well...a)this review came out before his death and b)because a good actor is dead doesn't mean that all of his works are good....i feel like that's the case with many people,they are good when they are alive but they are LEGENDARY when they die....or quit one or the other
Your actually right. But i tend to forget the fact that it was suppose to reflect the real Patch Adams life. I know i shouldn't but the heart warming moments get me every time. Like the scene with the kids in the hospital, yes, robin's performance was ridiculous and over the top but it was just too cute to see those sick kids laugh.
It's the artist effect. When someone is alive people will be fair and criticize their works or outright hate them, but once they're dead suddenly everything they ever did is a masterpiece and perfect.
He wasn't even croaked when this was done..(I read this before his death..) I don't hate the film., and enjpyed it for a umber pof years, but, yeah, it IS terribly flawed, including the "truth"..like Monica Potter/Carin Fisher dying, when it was a male friend, and she did not even EXIST! Oh, and one thing:Patch himself didn't care for it (though on my Universal Video VHS he does say otherwise) and looks NOTHING like ROBIN WILLIAMS. Still, he does get very serious whjen Carin tells of her molestation (whilst not even using the term itsells) and it seems to portraya "Dean Walcott" as more in the right than "Patch" in the part where Patch's exprelled by Dean W. for his "gynecology" stunt.
People who antagonize doctors and medical professionals are perhaps the most depraved, unscrupulous, and ungrateful people we have scurrying about in our current day and age. This movie seriously disgusts me, because it reminds me that some people actually approbate this narrow point of view, and really do perceive the philanthropic who save hundred of lives and have worked damn hard to do so as villains. Movies like Food Fight and The Cat in the Hat are pretty terrible, but at least the worst they do is desecrate original material, or assail the audience with unfunny jokes; this movie is actually fucking insulting the generosity, benignity, and intellect of doctors all around the globe. Fuck this movie.
Disowned Adaptation: The real Patch Adams himself was dissatisfied with the film, saying that it is more commercial and focuses more on him being funny than his actual methods; His philosophy is about using friendliness and humor to help in the healing process, using alternative medical treatments as well; the movie presented him as guy who likes making people feel better but actually getting better is a secondary issue. He was also annoyed that Robin Williams did not bother to donate any of his salary to his institute, although he did not dislike Williams as a whole and applauded his support for St. Jude Children's Hospital. In fact, the two were otherwise pretty good friends, so much so Adams would later write for Time Magazine a heartwarming farewell to Williams after he committed suicide.
WOW!!! The murdered female love interest was 100% fiction? Did some studio exec see the ending of Titanic and tried to milk off its success with a star crossed lovers plot, conclusion being a tragic death?

So true the only reason why all those extras are there is because they are actors from a failed skit show Doug tried to make after quitting the nostalgia critic so he decided to bring the critic back and add the skit show to the critic show i personally skip the skit parks because they are painfully unfunny
stethespaniard2 I never really understood the sudden hate for his skits, sure they're more elaborate post to boldly flee than there were before (taking advantage of having more actors and studio space) but they were always there. In this review for example we have the clown throwing the red nose.
Well I think the new ones hold up. Personally, I think both the old AND the new are good in their own special way. The old ones were more about the comedy and making fun of films while still making valid points about their structure. Whereas for he new ones, it's the other way around.

You can tell here that Doug actually put some amount of effort into making the Dr. Bitch-Spasms sketch funny, whereas nowadays, he just throws together sketches just to have sketches and the results are utter garbage 99% of the time. 2. The sketches here last for maybe 20-30 seconds max. The sketches in the new review are not only unfunny, as I said before, but many of them just drag on and on and on. In The Fourth commercial review where they spent half the video literally doing nothing but milking that stupid sexual harassment joke was just painful. I literally felt like I was watching SNL meets Family Guy cutaways. 3. The sketch in this review was done by Doug himself. (Those actors he has doing the sketches nowadays are just horribly unfunny.) It's time for Doug to throw out all these horrible half-baked sketches and just get back to good old Nostalgia Critic.
For the record.. Doug is kinda wrong. Students are often taught to regard patients in a detached manner, to approach them through protocols and as scientists. And that's the right way. Also, I would not find it surprising at all to see a doctor, on a tour with students, completely ignoring the patient's sensibilities and mentioning amputation as a possible treatment for their condition. I would imagine even more so in the '70s. Patients are a kind of "sub-class" in hospitals, you lead your students around and tell them what you've got to tell them, probably for the fourth time at that point. You don't really care if the patient overhears you...
That makes sense. I can see why needing to be detached would be important for a doctor of any kind (I love dogs, but could never be a vet, for that reason).

What I mean to say is, even if you are a sensitive person, and you do care about your patients, ignoring the advice of your teachers, - eventually you won't. At least not as much as you once did. Any person with the intelligence and the will to study (and, well, the damn money)... can be a medical doctor, and eventually be emotionally detached.

I actually think one of the major problems with this film is how they portray the "villain". Its something that the Critic only used as a bit of a punchline for the "Most Unorthodox" joke but here he's portrayed as a drill sergeant type who is not only bent on the ideology that Doctors are better than humanity but he's also completely closed off to any new ways of thinking or methods to heal patients. Okay, I don't know how a Dean of a Medical School would act but if you want a fair portrayal (and clearly this movie did not but just saying "IF you wanted a fair portrayal") why not develop him more as a character to show WHY he believes this one way of doing things is the right way, then you have a clash of two ways of thinking and (if you portrayed Adams right, which, again, clearly this movie didn't) none of them are strictly good or bad.

Couple of posters below me say that you need to 'suspend your disbelief' to enjoy this movie, but there's such a thing as going too far. There are a couple of anachronisms I can ignore like the use of the word 'sucks', but overly contrived and tendentious crap like the professor's 'train the humanity out of you speech' or Carin's ridiculously self-conscious introduction or that disgusting courtroom scene is so gauche that it insults your intelligence and breaks the fourth wall.
Because of the great pains the movie takes to pull you out of the experience of watching a movie in order to to manipulate your emotions, this movie seems to be aimed at people who are unfamiliar with anything beyond basic storytelling. You know, the kind of people for whom the most intellectually challenging movie or book they weren't forced to experience for class was The Matrix or Harry Potter.
"Suspend your disbelief" is bullshit when you're seeing a movie about a real person/real event. Fudging the facts in order to make the movie more appealing to a general audience not only is a slap in the face to the people who go to see it and expecting to learn a little something, but also a slap in the face, a kick in the ass, and a punch in the balls to the person/event that is being portrayed.

Almost every Nostalgia Critic Robin Williams review someone says "Doesnt Doug feels sorry now?" like he made fun of Robin Williams, not the movie. Nostalgia Critic reviewed movies made by people who already passed away, and yet he doesnt get the same flak (Besides Mako) I bet, if a celebrety died and was in one of Dougs reviewed, someone is going to say "I bed Doug feels sorry about making this review now"

Well the real-life Patch Adams may have hated this movie, but, just like many, he liked and respected Robin Williams. In fact, just like many, he said that he was deeply moved by Williams' death last year.
You know, as someone that has been Baker acted for suicidal thoughts, it's actually very common for the violent and potentially dangerous patients to be placed in together with the suicidal patients.
Also, the real Hunter Adams was only 26 when he earned his Doctor of Medicine from Virginia Medical University. Which makes the casting of Williams highly illogical. Especially since he had already played a university professor in Good Will Hunting.
The real Hunter Adams was so upset with his portrayal in this movie that he actually contacted Williams to tell him.

Doug never makes fun of Robin Williams. He makes fun of a movie and a character in that movie, and I think he has every right to. The points are still accurate, and the jokes are still funny, even after Robin Williams' sad death.

I agree; quality is slowly but surely creeping back into the movies. I was jaded with Hollywood for a long time, thinking they'd turned into nothing but lazy, formulaic sellouts. Then again, my taste in entertainment is different from most people's today: I love silent films/films from the 1930s-1940s and I read authors like Edgar Allan Poe and Victor Hugo in my spare time and love fairytales and legends like the stories of King Arthur. However, with movies like "Midnight in Paris", "Saving Mr. Banks", and "Frozen", I'm starting to have faith that Hollywood is getting back to its roots as storytellers. I'd love to take classes in screenwriting (I've only done playwriting and acting for the stage thus far) because once I learn how, I have dozens of film ideas in my head that would get the movies back to the more "old school" stuff they used to be. .
Honestly, i think if Artists could balance both their creative complexitiy with a modern day 21st century understanding of economics there could be middle ground in which you could appease the money hungry executives with quality. It's a business after all and i think they're starting to understand (the execs), that they need to innovate because we have a thriving independent market and alternative sources, also choice through the internet. It starts with perception; if that's shifted the market has to adjust or die, Ie: the music industry. If you're a fan of 'The hollywood reporter' they have 'roundtables' and this passing yr they had the executives from all the major studios talking openly about the reality and their fears. I wish you luck, theater is demanding but truly rewarding. Haha not that i'd personally know the strains of theater though it's one of the few Artistic cornerstones with its integrity intact. About your likes, i'm a fan of the golden age my self though i need to familiarize my self with the great novellas i've neglected (some you named).

The fingers thing toward the beginning is beyond stupid and defeats the entire premise of the film. The guy holds up 4 fingers and tells Patch to look at him, not his fingers. He says he sees 8 fingers and the guy tells him that's a better answer because it doesn't conform to the objective consensus... The problem is that there are only 4 fingers and obviously, he sees the same 4 fingers from 2 different angles, thus creating the illusion that there are more. The implied message is that by focusing on the person rather than the problem, you cloud the issue and get the wrong answer, which is the OPPOSITE of the point the movie is trying to make.
cyanmanta Agreed. The fact that Patch saying the guy has 8 fingers when he clearly has 4 is treated as him being a non conformist even though it's clear the guy has 4 fingers makes no sense.
cyanmanta The thing with this I think isn't that the guy HAS 8 fingers, but that Patch concentrates on the person the fingers are attached to rather than the fingers themselves. Its not the best segue and obviously doesn't get the point across very clearly, but this is actually really important as at the time patient-centered care wasn't really done. The medical staff would treat the illness without really worrying about the patient. Nowadays, patent-centered care is seen as very important and is taught from the very beginning, but back when the movie is set it just wasn't done, which is one of the reasons Patch made such a splash; he treated the whole person, not just the illness they had.
The writers could have explained this better, since I never really understood it until I started my nursing classes, but once you understand where they're coming from it actually hold a lot of water.

That comment is sheer brilliance
In my very humble opinion, I think this movie earns more defense than After Earth would because Robin Williams still seems to TRY in this movie. The flaws are extremely apparent, and it doesn't excuse the fact that he depicted a hard working doctor as just a clown, but truthfully a lot of those flaws lies more in the writing and direction than it is with Robin Williams himself. I feel like I still see him trying his damndest to put in passion into this role, even if he was playing it the same way as every other role. It really, really feels like Robin Williams was trying hard with this movie...
But looking at After Earth, that movie was completely built around sucking Smith-Dick. The performance given by Will Smith in that movie is just god awful, and has NOTHING to do with his real talents. He was Shamalyzed for After Earth, and there are dozens of other movies where he does phenomenally better work than he does in After Earth. In Patch Adams, we can at least see that Robin Williams was trying, and he was still giving off a feel of charisma to the point where he felt like a real character, even prompting NC to yell at the CHARACTER in some points and not the actor. In After Earth, there's just absolutely nothing redeemable about it. If Will Smith died anytime soon (which I pray he doesn't, don't want ANY early death on anyone), After Earth wouldn't be remembered with pride, it'd be shamefully hidden away because that movie blatantly did nothing but stroke the Smith ego, and we ALL know that has nothing to do with Will Smith.
Granted I think the 'hate' on any review just because the main actor had sadly passed away never makes any logical sense. A lot of the flaming are just trolls trying to start things, or people trying to vent out emotions for what might've been one of their favorite actors.

It's so great you can acknowledge that! I'm tired of folks switching their opinions when death occurs. Robin definitely put his all into this, and fortunately that's not the big problem. The problem is in the writing, the direction, and the general disrespect for Hunter Adams' work. I think Robin was an ideal casting choice, but the rest of the film just can't hold water.

2:30 "Do you find that funny, Hunter? Making fun of a man's infirmity?" Great point by Nostalgia Critic (and the therapist). William's character pontificates about how Beanie should be treated with a little more dignity and respect then spends the next minute or two making Beanie the butt of several jokes. This makes Williams look like a massive asshole and it completely undermines whatever he had to say about dignity and respect. Did no one in this production see how incredibly tasteless it was to use a catatonic patient as a comedy prop?
It's worse because catatonic individuals are fully aware of their surroundings and in the event they wake up, they're not happy if they learn they've been messed with while they were catatonic.
And the kicker? _Robin Williams knew this_ because he worked on a movie involving catatonia before this movie. You'd think he'd express more reluctance to go through with that joke.
Yeah. I get when people say, you should treat people with handicaps the same way you would any other person (as far as it is possible) as to integrate them into the group and make them feel human but I think this could've been done in a less offending way.

For those who may not know, the real ideas of Hunter Adams are indeed based around humour, but there's much more to it than just clowning around with patients to make them laugh. It's more about emphasising the emotional wellbeing and the comfort of patients just as much as their physical wellbeing. It's not necessarily that the film misrepresented his ideas, as much as it horribly oversimplified them to "Laughter is the best medicine, hoho!". And he did actually create the free community hospital in real (which apparently ran for 12 years, not too shabby), but not until AFTER he had graduated.

When Carin shares her molestation story with Patch, it's the first time in the movie we see him without a wiseass quip or some hopelessly simplistic slogan (which is what makes Critic's monkey routine at that point so hilarious). Sometimes bad things happen to good people and the writers of this movie didn't have a grown-up answer to that.

They make it seem like a doctor can either be an uptight, insensitive douchebag with no bedside manner whatsoever, or a buffoon who makes his/her patients laugh, but doesn't practice medicine at all on them (you'll notice the option of being a doctor who relates to his/her patients with a reasonable amount of bedside manner while still actually treating their illnesses isn't even brought up as a possibility).

I remember hearing Hunter Adams hating this film so much that he even told Roger Ebert himself that he detested it.
We had to watch this movie in English class a few years back. While all of my classmates were laughing and crying at it I was quoting the review to myself. When the movie was over and we were asked what our opinions were, I just said it was fine because I didn't want to have to explain myself to a room full of people who actually liked it.
R.I.P. Phillip Seymour Hoffman who played the most supportive student who talk balls to Patch Adams that you can study or don't study and he's more better than him. Thank You and I'm not going to come back with this corny movie that this fake doctor is not curing patients with laughter. Your ark is complete Hoffman, go and peace.
I went to We Day a few years back and Patch Adams was one of the speakers there. He was incredibly inspirational for all of the youth there :)

This is one of my favorite Nostalgia Critic reviews, despite being comedically hilarious, it also completely tears the entire movie's weak substance apart, pointing out every glaring bit of carelessness in it so well.
I work as a private grounds keeper for a dotoctor that own a plot of land across from the hospital he works at as a surgeon, and he plans to operate a restaurant and hotel for patient's familys so in a way I work for a non idiotic version of path adams

Your actually right. But i tend to forget the fact that it was suppose to reflect the real Patch Adams life. I know i shouldn't but the heart warming moments get me every time. Like the scene with the kids in the hospital, yes, robin's performance was ridiculous and over the top but it was just too cute to see those sick kids laugh.

It's the artist effect. When someone is alive people will be fair and criticize their works or outright hate them, but once they're dead suddenly everything they ever did is a masterpiece and perfect.

He wasn't even croaked when this was done..(I read this before his death..) I don't hate the film., and enjpyed it for a umber pof years, but, yeah, it IS terribly flawed, including the "truth"..like Monica Potter/Carin Fisher dying, when it was a male friend, and she did not even EXIST! Oh, and one thing:Patch himself didn't care for it (though on my Universal Video VHS he does say otherwise) and looks NOTHING like ROBIN WILLIAMS. Still, he does get very serious whjen Carin tells of her molestation (whilst not even using the term itsells) and it seems to portraya "Dean Walcott" as more in the right than "Patch" in the part where Patch's exprelled by Dean W. for his "gynecology" stunt.
God that LOTR soundtrack fits this review so well :DD

People who antagonize doctors and medical professionals are perhaps the most depraved, unscrupulous, and ungrateful people we have scurrying about in our current day and age. This movie seriously disgusts me, because it reminds me that some people actually approbate this narrow point of view, and really do perceive the philanthropic who save hundred of lives and have worked damn hard to do so as villains. Movies like Food Fight and The Cat in the Hat are pretty terrible, but at least the worst they do is desecrate original material, or assail the audience with unfunny jokes; this movie is actually fucking insulting the generosity, benignity, and intellect of doctors all around the globe. Fuck this movie.
Seeing Robin Williams and Phillip Seymour Hoffman in the same shot here is getting me teary-eyed. Two of the greats, taken in the same year. :(
Watching it again. Hard to believe Robin is 7 years passed August 11th.
Saw a preview of this when I was young, and merely thought it was a movie about a doctor-clown. Little did I know I was pretty spot-on.
Disowned Adaptation: The real Patch Adams himself was dissatisfied with the film, saying that it is more commercial and focuses more on him being funny than his actual methods; His philosophy is about using friendliness and humor to help in the healing process, using alternative medical treatments as well; the movie presented him as guy who likes making people feel better but actually getting better is a secondary issue. He was also annoyed that Robin Williams did not bother to donate any of his salary to his institute, although he did not dislike Williams as a whole and applauded his support for St. Jude Children's Hospital. In fact, the two were otherwise pretty good friends, so much so Adams would later write for Time Magazine a heartwarming farewell to Williams after he committed suicide.
RIP Robin Williams.Not quite my favorite Robin Williams film but it's still sad to learn about his passing.

So true the only reason why all those extras are there is because they are actors from a failed skit show Doug tried to make after quitting the nostalgia critic so he decided to bring the critic back and add the skit show to the critic show i personally skip the skit parks because they are painfully unfunny
stethespaniard2 I never really understood the sudden hate for his skits, sure they're more elaborate post to boldly flee than there were before (taking advantage of having more actors and studio space) but they were always there. In this review for example we have the clown throwing the red nose.
Well I think the new ones hold up. Personally, I think both the old AND the new are good in their own special way. The old ones were more about the comedy and making fun of films while still making valid points about their structure. Whereas for he new ones, it's the other way around.

1. You can tell here that Doug actually put some amount of effort into making the Dr. Bitch-Spasms sketch funny, whereas nowadays, he just throws together sketches just to have sketches and the results are utter garbage 99% of the time.
2. The sketches here last for maybe 20-30 seconds max. The sketches in the new review are not only unfunny, as I said before, but many of them just drag on and on and on. In The Fourth commercial review where they spent half the video literally doing nothing but milking that stupid sexual harassment joke was just painful. I literally felt like I was watching SNL meets Family Guy cutaways.
3. The sketch in this review was done by Doug himself. (Those actors he has doing the sketches nowadays are just horribly unfunny.)
It's time for Doug to throw out all these horrible half-baked sketches and just get back to good old Nostalgia Critic.

For the record.. Doug is kinda wrong. Students are often taught to regard patients in a detached manner, to approach them through protocols and as scientists. And that's the right way.
Also, I would not find it surprising at all to see a doctor, on a tour with students, completely ignoring the patient's sensibilities and mentioning amputation as a possible treatment for their condition. I would imagine even more so in the '70s. Patients are a kind of "sub-class" in hospitals, you lead your students around and tell them what you've got to tell them, probably for the fourth time at that point. You don't really care if the patient overhears you...
That makes sense. I can see why needing to be detached would be important for a doctor of any kind (I love dogs, but could never be a vet, for that reason).

What I mean to say is, even if you are a sensitive person, and you do care about your patients, ignoring the advice of your teachers, - eventually you won't. At least not as much as you once did.
Any person with the intelligence and the will to study (and, well, the damn money)... can be a medical doctor, and eventually be emotionally detached.

And when he doesn't, what does that signal: #1 I'm a professional and a scientist, #2 I'm experienced, #3 I've seen it many times and many others have had that problem: you're not alone, its bad but at least not unusual.
You do NOT want to see your doctor getting all mushy over you. More often than not it will signal: #1 I am scared and inexperienced, and/or #2 My god you're screwed!!

I actually think one of the major problems with this film is how they portray the "villain". Its something that the Critic only used as a bit of a punchline for the "Most Unorthodox" joke but here he's portrayed as a drill sergeant type who is not only bent on the ideology that Doctors are better than humanity but he's also completely closed off to any new ways of thinking or methods to heal patients. Okay, I don't know how a Dean of a Medical School would act but if you want a fair portrayal (and clearly this movie did not but just saying "IF you wanted a fair portrayal") why not develop him more as a character to show WHY he believes this one way of doing things is the right way, then you have a clash of two ways of thinking and (if you portrayed Adams right, which, again, clearly this movie didn't) none of them are strictly good or bad.
RIP Robin. You will never be forgotten! :'(

Couple of posters below me say that you need to 'suspend your disbelief' to enjoy this movie, but there's such a thing as going too far. There are a couple of anachronisms I can ignore like the use of the word 'sucks', but overly contrived and tendentious crap like the professor's 'train the humanity out of you speech' or Carin's ridiculously self-conscious introduction or that disgusting courtroom scene is so gauche that it insults your intelligence and breaks the fourth wall.
Because of the great pains the movie takes to pull you out of the experience of watching a movie in order to to manipulate your emotions, this movie seems to be aimed at people who are unfamiliar with anything beyond basic storytelling. You know, the kind of people for whom the most intellectually challenging movie or book they weren't forced to experience for class was The Matrix or Harry Potter.
"Suspend your disbelief" is bullshit when you're seeing a movie about a real person/real event. Fudging the facts in order to make the movie more appealing to a general audience not only is a slap in the face to the people who go to see it and expecting to learn a little something, but also a slap in the face, a kick in the ass, and a punch in the balls to the person/event that is being portrayed.

Well the real-life Patch Adams may have hated this movie, but, just like many, he liked and respected Robin Williams. In fact, just like many, he said that he was deeply moved by Williams' death last year.

You know, as someone that has been Baker acted for suicidal thoughts, it's actually very common for the violent and potentially dangerous patients to be placed in together with the suicidal patients.

Hoffman was 16 years younger than Williams. He was 30 when Patch Adams was filmed. I don't think 30 is that old. I turned 27 during MY freshman year.
Also, the real Hunter Adams was only 26 when he earned his Doctor of Medicine from Virginia Medical University. Which makes the casting of Williams highly illogical. Especially since he had already played a university professor in Good Will Hunting.
Underrated Critic Oh..... Well with that information this actually makes sense.
