CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Patch (Robin Williams) confronts Mitch (Philip Seymour Hoffman) about telling the Dean that he cheated, an argument ensues.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The fact-based story of an unconventional physician who attempted to heal patients with laughter, based on his own book and mixing equal doses of scatological humor and pathos. Robin Williams stars as Hunter Adams, a troubled young man who commits himself to a mental institution in the late 1960s. His experiences there convince Adams to become a doctor, and he enrolls in medical school, where he is appalled at the cold, clinical professionalism that alienates patients from their caregivers. Determined to provide emotional and spiritual relief as well as medicine, Adams clowns around for his patients, getting to know them personally. Although his efforts seem to work wonders and the hospital nursing staff is grateful for the levity Adams provides, his methods alienate his uptight roommate Mitch (Philip Seymour Hoffman) as well as the staff and faculty of his school. Adams perseveres, however, even starting his own low-cost rural clinic called the Gesundheit Institute, and wooing a pretty fellow student, Carin (Monica Potter). Tragedy strikes, and Adams' career is put in jeopardy, forcing him to defend his style and philosophy before a board of jurists determined to bar him from practicing medicine. Patch Adams (1998) was produced by former M*A*S*H (1972-83) star Mike Farrell, who met the real-life Adams when the offbeat doctor served as an advisor to the actor's popular TV series.

I love this scene because it's so real, neither of these men are villains and are just trying to do what they think is best. It's just so realistic.
Yep. Its a great scene.
That's what happens when you put good actors in front of the camera. It feels natural and real.
Its not real this is from movie name dr patch adam
The problem is that Hoffman is TOO good. This scene IMO isn't supposed to be nuanced. Hoffman is clearly the scripted villain, yet he sells you utterly that he's the right one.
@@chrisotto8370 This is a thoughtful comment. I always kind of pulled the same vibe off it to a degree.
Two brilliant actors gone way too soon. Almost chilling to see them in the same scene together. You will be missed, Robin and Phillip.
alan rickman and robin williams were two of my favorite actors in the world, and both were gone way too soon, i cried for both of them when they passed
2 great actors gone too soon....
theone2225 not wrong at all mate and legends in their own minds
theone2225 no shit, I totally forgot they're both gone, wow!!!!!!
I feel the same way when I watch Twister and see scenes with Hoffman and Bill Paxton. It just seems surreal that all three of these guys are gone.
This is such a beautiful scene and I am saddened that both these great men lost their lives.
anyone watching in 2018?
Phillip Seymour Hoffman was amazing. Everything he did, he made it so real....Robin Williams on the other hand, was an amazing comedian, but when he got serious, he could always steal the show. Robin and Phillip R.I.P.
alan rickman and robin williams were two of my favorite actors in the world, and both were gone way too soon, i cried for both of them when they passed
I was never more disturbed by a celebrity death than when Phillip Seymour Hoffman died, then Robin Williams died in the same year.
stigler30 warms the heart to know they shared this scene together
Seriously? He was a drug addict who’s addiction caught up with him
@@saturn0660 So are half of the celebrities in Hollywood. Doesn't make it any less shocking
@@saturn0660 so it makes the blow of death less powerful? Honestly, what kind of person are you to even think for a second that a death is less shocking if they did it to themselves?
stigler30
And by “died”, you mean killed themselves.
The amount of emotion & energy that went into this scene is immeasurable. RIP Gents.
The “ha ha” in the middle of that tirade is why PSH was a master.

It’s been 20 years since I first watched this movie and I’ve never forgotten this scene. I completely understand both of them, it’s all about personalities, each person possesses their own set of skills, we can’t all be the same…..
Two excellent actors who shall be missed. Rest in peace, Williams & Hoffman.
alan rickman and robin williams were two of my favorite actors in the world, and both were gone way too soon, i cried for both of them when they passed
Mitch later learns it takes more than just knowing the right answer to be a doctor, he learns to connect and be human with his patients.
Philip was unbelievably talented !! This scene just blew me away all over again, even though I’ve seen it several times. He was that good!!😢 🙏
Rip Philip Seymour Hoffman 1967-2014 and Rip Robin Williams 1951-2014 they 6 months apart
Both of these men are acting gods and this is a crucial scene. Their sudden departures in this past year have made it a very dark period in the movie industry for sure. But we should celebrate their incredible bodies of work and honour their memories, not focus in on the final moments of their lives, as traumatic as they were. I'm sure it's not what they'd want. Seymour Hoffman and Williams busted their asses nearly everyday of the year without hesitation to entertain millions of people worldwide.
Sigh... this film inspired me to be a doctor. Thank you for everything, Philip. Rest in peace. =)
Sigh... Rest in peace Robin. :(
You a doctor yet?
@@Samxsonite505 for the last 13 years. Yes.
@@soonny002 daaaaaaaang thats awesome! thats neat that this film inspired you to be a doctor.
Awesome!! I hope the passion is still there for it! 😆 I wanted to be a doctor as a kid and used to love watching ‘Open University’ at 2/3am in the morning which showed things like open heart surgeries and things like that, but, now that I’m older that completely freaks me out! That sense of mortality....I don’t have it in me to be a doctor! Haha
One of Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s Best performances & roles. And, one of Robin Williams’s best movies. Both so talented!
I was just swept over with a horrible wave of sadness as I realized that both of these *amazing* actors are gone :-(
You'll get over it
alan rickman and robin williams were two of my favorite actors in the world, and both were gone way too soon, i cried for both of them when they passed
A tough scene to watch - about saving lives mind you - after the way these two guys checked out of the world.
Eerie..
That's what they want you to believe
Agreed, one was a coward and one was a dope
@@76tennboy Williams had an aggressive form of dementia or something that caused suicidal ideologies. Nice judgement btw I'll bet you are perfect 👌
@@babyfood9537 I never said I was perfect. I am FAR from perfect I just get so sick of people doing Robin Williams motivational quotes About keep pressing on word from a guy that was a coward and killed him self
And now 6 months apart...they're both gone.
Gone ON. They are still around., in spirit, which is the truer reality anyway..
Blimey...it takes a special sort of arrogance to refer to something for which there's exactly zero evidence as "the truer reality".
that's why its called belief and faith, otherwise people would call religion their Evidence, rather than their belief or Faith, give folks a break, theyre just doin' the best they can do
2 immense talents and 2 tragic losses. This scene carries even more power now. RIP
What a talent, he turned every scene into something special.
we miss you both dearly...when acting is delivered and felt by the audience
This movie is on my mind every day as my study for my nursing degree and work as a CNA in the hospital. It inspires me.
Two sensational actors who created such a sublime moment that are no longer with us. Hard to imagine... I say that like it's never going to happen to me someday. So surreal.
i never get tired of this scene
Two great actors ... who TOOK their own lives. I wish we could all recognize the signs and be the shoulder, be the listening ear, to be the set of eyes that SEE's, to be the set of ears that listens, to be the caring individual who can be there for someone.
Well, Williams killed himself because he had a wasting disease and didn't want to wait until he was debilitated. And Hoffman's death was an accidental overdose.
So... lovely sentiment but wouldn't have applied in either case.
@@zammmerjammer You don't see it, but they both couldn't live with themselves, and made a choice
Robin Williams had dementia from lewy body disease which was literally eating his brain away. . He killed himself because he had very little capacity for rational thought. Tough guy to judge someone over something you've never experienced.
What a great scene from one of my favorite movies. To me this scene is not merely about "prick vs funny guy," its significance was more in how Patch had to overcome barriers of traditional thinking in order for him to become accepted by his peers.
His speech in this video was spot on. I mean I wouldn't want the guy who pranked his way through medical school diagnosing me with anything.
Da Truth Unless the guy who pranked in medical school is a genius.
@@hallieharker4384 except this is a movie and it doesn't work that way in real life. You are not simply "a genius" without a ton of hard work and dedication with study. You can't just have knowledge without effort.
@@testy462 I don't know about that. To some people, it comes really easily, whereas others, who are also really smart, have to really work at it to get to that same level. Some people have an innate gift, while others who are really smart have to work really hard to achieve that same level of giftedness. Take music, for example. Somebody like Mozart, who was playing and composing music by the time he was FIVE and could reportedly play a piece, NOTE PERFECT, after just HEARING it only once...and then take me. Now, I'm a decent musician and have been playing off and on since the age of eleven--I'm 42 now--but I would have to work AWFUL hard just to attain the level of mastery that Mozart had in childhood.
@@hallieharker4384 I kind of agree with you, but when you think about someone who does pranks, you think about someone who doesn't take their responsibility seriously.
Would you what a doctor like that? Genuis or not, I want a doctor that is responsible and not just an *irresponsible genuis*
@@lynnpabontheelitehero6579 Actually, I'd love it if my doctor had a sense of humor. It makes them more human to me instead of something "other" and someone intimidating. Fortunately, my doctor does have a sense of humor!
To me, this is one of the greatest scenes, in one of the greatest "doctor movies", played by two of the greatest actors. What a great legacy these two left.
It’s sadness me that both these great actors are no longer here
RIP Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
and now RIP Robin Williams
I truly loved both these men, I can't believe they're gone :-(.
RIP Robin Williams. Now both in this clip are gone.
Two great actors
hard to believe these two actors are gone. a great movie.
Two greats gone. Both in action here, fantastic as ever.
This was the scene that made me fall in love with PSH as an actor. Coming from a medical family, knowing what’s ahead of you, he channeled this and nailed it head on.
2 different characters. 2 completely different perspectives. But both have an incomprehensible amount of passion about medicine.
It’s so rare and so wonderful when you have two people in a scene and you can clearly see both perspectives from opposite sides
Both Robin Williams and Phillip Seymour Hoffman were amazing in any role they took on. 😔
0:53 gets me every time 😂
It has been so long since I've seen this movie...I didn't realize Phillip Seymour Hoffman was in it until I watched this clip. Thanks for posting.
R.I.P. 🪦 Robin Williams and Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Best scene in the movie! I remember watching this movie and coming to this scene, seeing this great actor, and wondering, "Wow, who is this great actor. I thought it was the first thing I'd seen him in. I was wrong. He was such a chameleon, I didn't even realize that he was the crazy guy Dustin Davis from Twister, who tells Jamie Gertz about the tornado "suck zone". Whenever anyone I know, says they don't know who Phillip Seymour Hoffman is and don't know his work; I send them to this scene to show how great of an actor he was. They are always blown away and want to check out more of his work.
Damn! the acting in this scene.... wow
I’ve actually met people like this, who can’t comprehend that someone who didn’t work as hard as them could still be better, even accuse them of cheating for the sake of wounded pride
I don't think it's pride so much as, he doesn't think Patch is taking it seriously. Both he and we as the audience never see him really study. How can you be better at something, like medicine which takes years to get good at without studying. I always feel like this scene is referencing another scene or two that was cut, because his criticism is valid. We don't even get a throw away line like "I have a photographic memory." I knew people in college like that, they were frustrating because they seemed ro never study as well.
@@jreese7436 some people are better at things then others. Including medicine which can take years to be good at but even in med school some residents will be better then other without trying. The scene is trying to tell you even if you are good at something people will still hate you for it. the scene also explains why they will hate you its because they're pride gets hurt, noted when he self proclaimed "I have what it takes".
@@Popcorn466 The problem is we never see him being better. We see a bunch of Robin Williams being Robin Williams, while entertaining is bad storytelling for the movie and this scene. Both he as a character and us as the audience are left in a lurch. Why I said I feel like a scene or two is missing.
Two very different and yet very compelling talents...and they're both dearly missed.
RIP to two wonderful actors! Robin Williams and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Oh Phillip...you are missed.
This one hurts for so many reasons. RIP to both amazing actors.
Both of them. Makes me so sad to know I’ll never get to see them perform again. All of us will never get to see them perform ever again:(
Two great actors whom were legendary in their own right. Now they are gone.
RIP, Robin and Phillip,
It's amazing if you replace the word 'doctor' with 'actor' in this scene. Such tragic ends to two huge talents. #RIP
RIP to both of these amazing actors
Both of these actors were taken from us too soon. On a side note, this scene seems to have the unintentional effect of making us side with Hoffman's character and his views.
Good point. But I think the truth of what both said made them realize that life is complicated. Hoffman's character made a valid point. But Williams forced him to realize that in fact what he was saying was not new. Watch Hoffman's reaction after Williams leaves. He is pensive and the truth of what Williams said was making him re-think his passion to be a "prick".
I still think he had stronger points overall, his problem was that he needed to brush up on his bedside manner. In the end, I would prefer the professionalism that Hoffman brings instead of Williams but I do see the importance in lifting up the spirits of those who are terminally ill.
That's what's so wonderful about the ambiguity of this scene. We side with him because there is no one, single, correct philosophy here.
Its the whole movie we side against Patch. Not just this scene.
They weren’t taken, they checked themselves out
Philip Seymour Hoffman was a brilliant and versatile actor. RIP
I got chills just now looking at this, wow.
This is a great movie. Sadness and tragedy throughout the whole thing and still managed to walk out of the theater feeling good. Wow
Two great actors who are both resting in peace now!
I can't believe they're both gone. My heart aches.
I think Phillip Seymour Hoffman just told off the whole movie. Haven't seen the movie mind you, but based on the critiques I've heard of this film, he parroted several of them.
Yep. Spot on. He's the damn hero of the film.
I for one have seen it. The problem is that the film significantly deviates from Patch's real life in favour of melodramatic cliches.
Hoffman himself noted those issues and tried to incorporate them into his performance
The most dangerous kind of “villain” is a good man who thinks he is RIGHT!
The world is less now these two amazing souls are gone. This is one of my favorite movies.
What a delight. Those two were so freaking talented, it hurts.s
RIP to two talented and great actors.
R.I.P. Phillip. You will be missed.
this is an argument where you side with both people.
True
This is sad seeing two dead actors alone in a huge blockbuster movie. Rest In Peace to two great actors.
RIP Robin and Phillip, two gifted actors
RIP to both Robin and Phillip.
they're not dead, robin and philip's legacy lives through their movies.
OMG I forgot, you're right, they are both dead now.
R.I.P. Robin Williams and Philip Seymour Hoffman
Who's watching in 2020? Still can't believe they're gone.😢
I watch this video clip every month.
TWO OF THE GREATS IN ONE SCENE. HUHUHUH YOU GUYS WILL BE MISSED.
How can both of these wonderful men be gone so soon.
Patch Adams is one my favorite movies . Universal did a great job making a movie based on a true story about a doctor . I’m lucky to have the double feature dvd Universal patch Adams and what dreams may come with Robin Williams.
RIP robin Williams and Philip symore Hoffman.
Rest In Peace Philip Seymour Hoffman You Will Be Missed
Maturity is when you realize Mitch was right
Not Necessarily,It takes all kinds of Side's too make a good doctor 'Humor'is a side.
"I want to be a doctor!" "This isn't a game to me!" "This isn't play time!" "This is serious business!"
LOL
This movie sucked so bad it made me angry. Adams, as he was portrayed by Williams, was the real prick. Hoffman’s character was right, and Hoffman stole the show, as he often did.
It is one thing for a DJ to be a clown to add some entertainment to his show (GM Vietnam). I do not want my doctor to be a clown.
If the cancer kids need a clown to cheer them up, then the hospital can hire a clown.
Jon Gilbertson Firstly adams wasn’t the prick, secondly hoffman didn’t steal the show and if you watched, then you would know his character eventually went to Adams side because he knew deep down he was right. Yes the same Adams that you called a “prick” smh. And lastly the movie was good and your in a small minority but an opinions an opinion and your entitled to yours. Even if it is ignorant
Prick.
Oldiezz The real Patch Adams hated this movie. He had nothing against Williams but he said the movie didn’t portray him or his life correctly. In fact, the amount of things that are added and created for this movie is astounding when comparing it to the real life of Hunter Adams. The biggest example is the character of Corrine. But I don’t want to assume that you don’t know the real life of Hunter Adams. If you don’t, I recommend you do because it would really open your eyes to a man who really puts his heart and soul to what he does. However, if you do know the true story and still like this movie, then no problem. Everyone has the right to like the movie they like.
They're both right.
It’s so sad that both these amazing men died the same year, and way too soon. RIP ❤
"I forget how young you are". Robin hit Will this too...."you're just a kid"
I miss these two talented soooo much!
Excellent Movie with amazing actors RIP Robin Williams and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, this movie always makes me cry.
Two great legends
My god I miss both these wonderful actors.
RIP legends
Alas the prick wasn't there for those 2 souls when they needed him RIP
***** wat
Who's 'the prick'
Neither was the "funny guy"
You are jumping to a conclusion there. Cripplehawk was noting that the non existent(prick) in the movie who could save lives was not there when these sadly passed away. It's clever and touching. Not to be interpreted the way you did, unless you are looking to be offended.
1Corinthians1:3;
There's no such thing as "God". Certainly not the Abrahamic god (of all gods).
It's sad to see what religion does to an otherwise healthy mind.
Hoffman deserved an Oscar for this scene alone.
Gracias por la mejor enseñanza de la profesión médica! Y por tantas risas y lágrimas! Uno de los mejores actores del mundo! Una verdadera tristeza la noticia de su muerte!
Thank you, Robin, for making the world a better place ! !
RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman. The first movie where I saw him acting.
The piano for this channel at the end is haunting in some weird way I can’t describe. It’s cinematic and moving and I can’t figure it out
He was such a great actor, I can't believe it...
Just so good in any role. Damn I miss him.
When I watched the movie for the first time I was rooting for Patch the whole way, but looking at just this scene alone makes me agree with the other guy. Also love the great lines and acting
Then you have not understood this movie
@@jorisspeelberg1234 Patch Adams hated this movie , that should be enough for everybody. During the whole movie you never could see him doing anything related to medicine, he just acts like a clown all the freaking time.
The point tho is that Patch was simply at another level. He knew his stuff and simply didn’t have to hit the books like this guy did.
@@MrFrostien then the fake patch is better than the real patch
@@grandoldsoul4691 that's why its dumb... because the only way patch adams is able to have no work ethic combined with knowing everything is if it's made up.

amazing acting. miss these guys.
RIP. This scene is so ironic, as to what they are talking about, and what happens to them later in real life, too soon, nearly at the same time.
