Cleaning the salt cell of your swimming pool is an important maintenance task that should be done regularly to ensure that your pool's salt chlorinator is working properly. Here are the steps to clean a swimming pool salt cell:
1. Turn off the pool pump: Before you begin cleaning the salt cell, turn off the pool pump to prevent any water from flowing through the cell.
2. Remove the salt cell: Remove the salt cell from the pool's plumbing system. This may involve unscrewing the cell from the plumbing or disconnecting it from the power source.
3. Rinse the cell: Rinse the salt cell with a garden hose to remove any loose debris or buildup.
4. Soak the cell: Fill a bucket with a solution of one part muriatic acid and four parts water. Place the salt cell in the solution and let it soak for about 15 minutes. Be sure to wear gloves and eye protection when handling muriatic acid.
5. Scrub the cell: After soaking, use a soft-bristled brush to scrub the salt cell, paying special attention to the areas where buildup is most concentrated.
6. Rinse the cell: Rinse the salt cell thoroughly with a garden hose to remove any remaining acid solution.
7. Reinstall the cell: Reinstall the salt cell in the pool's plumbing system and reconnect it to the power source.
8. Turn on the pool pump: Turn on the pool pump and let it run for a few minutes to circulate the water through the salt cell.
It's important to clean your swimming pool salt cell regularly to prevent buildup and ensure that your pool's salt chlorinator is working properly. The frequency of cleaning will depend on how often you use your pool and the hardness of your water. It's a good idea to consult the owner's manual for your salt cell or seek the advice of a professional pool service technician.

This is a great video .
Hello...what kind of salt should I use if the level is low???? Great video and thank you so much for your help 🙏🏽
Any pool salt can be used.
My pool said to use a 10:1 ratio of water to acid. You’re using 50:50.. Thoughts? I just don’t want to mess up anything.
@@WolverineBlue17 if the cell has lots of calcium build up, put half water then put a small amount of acid at a time. It will foam up a lot the more calcium there is. Just wait til foaming stops and add a little more. Take your time, you'll be fine.
Hi, great video. My question is after I connect the cell, do I just turn on the pump or do I need to prime the pump 1st? Thanx in advance.
Just turn the pump on.
Need to buy one of those bases
link in the description.
I’d buy the base on Amazon. The Hayward one is around $75 from what I saw.
Does it matter which way it is installed related to the flow of water? Mine has to be installed vertically. Have looked at Hayward site and paperwork with no data.
Thanks
I've seen it installed both ways and I don't see a difference. But they do say to install it horizontally. Some people just don't have the room to install that way.
I use to use muriatic acid, now i use vinegar diluted with water. works great.
That works. Just have to sock it longer.
@@VIPPoolsandSpas what ratio vinegar to water?
@@eligoldstein2763 PURE 100%. If you can get the "cleaning vinegar", get that.
I have the Hayward Tcell940 what should my setting be on my system 15,9,5,3 please help

@@VIPPoolsandSpas Excellent thank you so much
I have flashing lights on the control panel. Any idea why it’s happening? Thanks a lot for the cleaning video though.
Press and hold the black button to the left until flashing goes away
Hey! great video. My issue is my generator seems to be working fine. "Generating" and "power" lights are lit. The problem is, per test strips i have no chlorine. It was fine a few days ago, now nothing. the cyanatic acid was low so I added a gallon. Called Hayward and they said to "super chlorinate" for 24 hours, if still no chlorine, clean cell. the problem is it's so calcified and cannot get it to budge. I'm afraid it will crack. any suggestions? and wouldn't i have flashing or constant lit indicators if chlorine wasn't being generated? I'm so confused! but I can't really use pool with no chlorine in it. appreciate
Shock the pool and put pucks in for now. Have to clean out that cell or get a new one. And. Get yourself a real salt tester. I have another video showing how to caribrate the cell.
@@VIPPoolsandSpas i actually just tested again and chlorine level is fine but was told to leave on "super chlorinate" forc 24hrs. its been 6. but yes, I will clean and get new 1 if needed. ty!
@@VIPPoolsandSpas can't find video on how to calibrate cell on your page. can you put link here?

Same issue here. I installed the brand new Hayward T15 last year and we had to dial down the percentage because of how much chlorine it was generating (not complaining.). This year, after just 4 months of usage last year, and storing the cell in the house in an air tight container....it's hardly generating anything. Our tests and pool store test both show about 1 on the chlorine test...barely adequate. I grabbed water from the return line because that was always the most chlorinated when using pucks the previous year just to test at its strongest...and still hardly anything. Looks clean, but going to clean it now with the muriatic acid/water and hope...oh, and sure enough, today, just as we're getting ready to clean it, the hayward panel is blinking "inspect cell". Again, fingers crossed.
On the Hayward control box, for that type of salt cell (turbocell940-CUL) the setting is t-15 correct?
Yes
@@VIPPoolsandSpas thanks so much!
The TCELL940-CUL is an older cell. Its now just tcell940. Just make sure your system is rated for that cell. Like the Aqua Rite 900
@@VIPPoolsandSpas I have the Aqua Rite 900. Same as in your video. Just wanted to confirm! Thanks again from Canada.
@@richelsd Great. We are also in Canada. Thanks for watching my video.

Where is the name of the tool you used to tighten ring? Great video, thank you
All the links should be in the video description. If not, let me know.
@catebransfield8927 it's an oil filter wrench
Hey! The plier you used is it 12” or 9”?

I noticed you turned or loosened each union in opposite directions. How do you know which way is right ?
Great question. When your facing the way/direction the union is, always unscrew to the left.
They are all lefty loosy righty tighty.
What is that tool called exactly ?

What kind of grease on o-ring?
@@InDatParish oring grease. Hayward has one on Amazon. There should be a link in the video description.
Do I have to have the tool to tighten?
Nope. Do it by hand. BUT. the older it gets the harder it will be to be it tight enough so it doesnt leak at all.
Yeah minutes after writing that I tried and ordered one 😂.
9 Inch or 12 inch channellock?

What if I do all this and still have No Flow coming up?
NO Flow on the Display?
@@VIPPoolsandSpas Yes. Same issue
@@tomcirucci1516 If your getting a NO FLOW message it will be something that might be slowing down the flow. Make sure filters are cleaned or backwashed. Could also be a flow switch issue. There are other videos on our channel just for this type of salt system.
Why use acid when it isn’t that bad
But did you learn from the video?
Ok so i dont have thst type of tool what kind of tool is that ur using i need to get one i have every possible tool except this one ur using!! 🤦♂️
Should be a link in the video description
You just use an oil filter wrench from any auto parts store
@@colinarner790 thanks i got the channel lock wrench
