Resident Evil Village is a 2021 survival horror game developed and published by Capcom. It is the sequel to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017). Players control Ethan Winters, who searches for his kidnapped daughter in a village filled with mutant creatures. Village maintains survival horror elements from previous Resident Evil games, with players scavenging environments for items and managing resources. It adds more action-oriented gameplay, with higher enemy counts and a greater emphasis on combat.
Resident Evil Village was announced at the PlayStation 5 reveal event in June 2020 and was released on May 7, 2021, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, followed by a macOS version and a cloud version for Nintendo Switch in October 2022. An iOS version was released on October 30, 2023.
The game received generally favorable reviews, with praise for its gameplay, setting, and variety, but criticism for its puzzles, boss fights, and performance issues on the Windows version; the increased focus on action divided opinions. Resident Evil Village won year-end accolades including Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards. The game had sold 8.3 million units by June 2023.

I gotta say, I like Unreal Engine as much as the next guy, but this *really* goes to show the value of an in-house engine and programmers that know that engine almost line by line.
RE on iPhone, Spider-Man 2 on PS5, and now Alan Wake 2 on PC are just superb examples of passionate developers pouring every ounce of love, technology, and optimization into making something truly special, in-house, and targeting specific hardware.

Since I think it's relevant to your comment I'll say here what I have said in the comments.
I think Apple have a knack for investing in a niche as a tangible proof of concept that feeds back into their ecosystem in some way. They have a very loyal and on-board userbase who enjoy the overlap with their software across their products. If they can have it be viable on an iPhone then it seems natural to then approach the Macs with their new hardware, architectural familiarity with their use of ARM and the familiar software integration which is often quite frictionless. So to address what Luke was saying about gaming on Mac I would say that they are going about it in reverse. They have the user base on mobile to justify that being a more effective launching pad. It creates separation between the usual perception of Windows vs Mac in gaming while making the type of experience they can offer be more core to the ecosystem that their userbase is very much locked into.
I think a recent example that adds to my speculation is Apple having seen what Valve has been doing in the gaming space developing Proton (essentially Wine) on Linux; using Wine lately as part of their game "porting" toolkit on Mac. I am far from an Apple fan but they are not shy about taking established ideas and even code to offer more than before if they see enough incentive. I would say they're often late in many areas but there's little reason for them to ever care when they have such a loyal fanbase. My interests are outside of using their ecosystem so I and some of us were never the target audience yet Apple have plenty already who have an iPhone who many already likely game on other systems. Maybe the iPhone for them is the key in further justifying the Mac. They rarely seem scared into being early in a market when they earn plenty with their established IP. Slow and steady wins the race; especially when you have the time, money and resources along with work from others that has shown potential that they can implement and define such potential in the confines of their familiar, widely used and often frictionless ecosystem.
I could be way off base but of all companies to be so ruthless and do it in a way that seems so casual does not surprise me and as much as such potential has been afforded to gamers and power users for a long time those alone are not a wider ecosystem that of course would matter to them more than what we enjoy. Plenty of their users in some ways have accepted less to have the ecosystem they enjoy and being loyal in some way seems to be a narrative that plays out, having Apple offering more over time that is integrated in ways that feel core to the experience, in turn justifying the loyalty some hold in their minds. So many cards have been shown by others that such a company has afforded enough time I think to play their best hand. Time will tell. I and many of us likely prefer what we can do now outside of such an ecosystem. I enjoy spending time tinkering to have something be how I want but many do not and that's a viable audience that consoles already prove to exist and maybe it all integrating together is the icing on the cake for a well-established userbase on iPhone.

As someone who have played Alien Isolation (Mobile Port) on an Iphone 13, this is a impressive and good stepping stone for mobile ports, however, i do think there are still a lot of things to consider playing an AAA game on a mobile device this small, one is the screen is very small, if youre just using the touch screen to play this, you can barely see anything ( a controller is a must or else it will get frustrating during enemy encounters) and might get dizzy after 30 minutes or so, because of motion sickness or just unable to focus the things on the screen, second is the device itself will really burn up, like an oven, after a while u will need to put it down or else the frames of the game will drop drastically (around 5-15 FPS when enemy encounters, and can barely play it) due to the device overheating, after these two points i pointed out, i do think the industry is trying to push the limits of mobile devices and its impressive to see that, but i still think if you really want to fully play story heavy driven games like these on the go, PC handhelds are still the way go to, trust me , u wont want to experience this on such a small screen like this, on an ipad is okay, but on an Iphone, i trully dont encourage this way to play, but this is just my opinion .

With triggers becoming face buttons your loose ease of access with your pointer and middle fingers.

    • @mpulsivity
      @mpulsivity 8 місяців тому +11

The touch controls are a compromise to even use it at all without a controller. This is so much of a direct port of the Mac version that they didn't even add touch support for the menu. It took me a minute to figure out why the menu was unresponsive (I thought the game had crashed). It turns out you needed to use the on-screen controls to even select menu options. This port and the fact that you can play the opening for free is 100% Apple pushing the game into as many peoples hands as possible so they can prove that an iPhone is as good as or better than something like a Steamdeck or ROG Ally. Put a Backbone One on it and it could easily be your portable console. If Apple ever allowed Steam on iOS (never going to happen, I know), it would dominate handheld gaming.

Top 10 reasons why this is a bad idea:
    1. Its a phone. You need battery on your phone. You are not going to waste battery playing Resident Evil Village
    2. Its a phone. I struggle to see some things on my 14 inch laptop in a lot of games, i can't imagine the squinting needed for a phone screen.
    3. Its a phone. You are not going to carry a controller with you to play this game on breaks and you are not using the touch controls.
    4. Its a phone. Its not a gaming console, you cant pause the game and pick it back up later, you will have to save, quit manually (which takes time, specially if you are not next to a saving slot in village). If you leave the game running you will burn your pocked and/or run out of battery. here is a little POV for you guys: "Oh im playing REViillage in the train, but i need to get off on the next stop. OH crap! Im in the middle of fighting Moreau, what do i do?"
    5-10. Its a phone???

But a Switch and Steam Deck, heck even the PSP, PSVIta, 3DS and DS have features such as pause/suspend that makes it actually good to play in small play sessions. There are games like Shadow Fight 3 and 4 - these work great. I play Tekken 6 from PSP on emulator on my Android phone, an it also works fantastic. So now, when you can pair almost every bluetooth controller with any smartphone, I hope we will be getting better looking big titles on mobile devices more often.
