How I made the TRIANGLE CUSHION and face my fear - ZIPS!

  • This is NOT a master class on inserting zips - step away now if that is why you are here - nothing to see, move along! But in my usual 'how hard can it be' style, I have a go. These cushions are fun. Who doesn't like a bit of fun? If you are tempted to try this why not use a foam filled cushion pad and save yourself a few grey hairs! ha ha!
The SHOP is currently taking a little break and will be back in a couple of weeks. You can still download the digital files to make a TREASURE BOX, a PINCUSHION or a PANTORAN here

Next week - true Arne and Carlos Style, I will be inviting you to revisit a video that will answer some of my most frequently asked question!
Enjoy your summer. Though I read today that TeAnu in New Zealand, where I visited on my way to Fiordland a few years ago, is covered in snow! Enjoy your WINTER all you people on the Lime Green Sofa in those parts of the world!

As a sewist for 66 years, I must admit, my friend dear Kate, that I have shed more tears and spent the most time with my friend Jack the Ripper sewing and re sewing Zips as you fondly call them. I was blessed to receive in the mail yesterday your complete collection of books. Such lovely pictures. I am not surprised that you were in the health care profession. You have an analytical mind but are gusty enough to make do as circumstances dictate. I was a Nurse also who work with special needs children for over 20 years. I can identify with the joys and difficulty working away from a sterile cold medical setting. I smiled, laughed and cried reading you stories. You have experienced great tragedy and triumph in your life. The young woman who passed all too young , I pray she was kept as pain free as possible and we both know there are worse things than death. Thank you for sharing your life, it gives me courage to face another day

ah! Faith - what a lovely name for a Nurse - that year was the most emotional and traumatic for all who were involved. but yes - I believe that we did all we could to make her life the best we could in the circumstances. Her daughter is the image of her in more than looks - I have no words.
But BUT! we go on - and we be the best we can be, take joy in the tiny moments - even unpicking! I love this comment so much xxxx thank you

Dear Kate, this is one of my favorite videos. Your true personality came out and I think that is why we love you so much. Your little Yoop Se Daisy and Hidey Ho make things so funny. I'm from the United States and I had never heard Hidey Ho before but I love it. In your videos I have the idea sometimes "Can I make that?" to "I'm going to make that. You make us want to at least try to do new things. I so enjoy your videos and sometimes watch them over and over again. I want to make the afghan that you are working on while you watch "The Tellie" I am just searching for that video. Thank You Kate for Being You!

Kate I never doughted you ! Even when you were talking to yourself at the start of the process. I really needed this light hearted moment . We have been supporting our autistic daughter who lives alone . She struggles with some aspects of her day to day care , but we are immensely proud of her achievements to date . She is savaunt, so memory is both a blessing and an issue from time to time . Some days I come away feeling very sad some days very uplifted . Despite all life's ups and downs caring for her is a joy ( mostly) and so I would pass on to carers everywhere, some heart felt best wishes and hope for the future . No platitudes or grossly inappropriate sugery phrases....just our best wishes X thanks for sharing Kate and lightening our load x

evening Kate, I use to make these for dad when he broke the base of his spine and needed extra support there when sitting, I use to shake the feathers down before unpicking and do a running stitch 1/2 inch below where I had to unpick the cushions, only a few feathers escaped that way and made it easier to unpick, I also pinned and then tacked when stitching on the machine it made it easier to stitch on a normal sewing machine, thank you, Kate and Norma, lovely to see you both, have a beautiful week x x

Well done, Kate! You are so inspiring to me. I have sewn since I was a little girl and have put in many zippers and I applaud you for trying it. We don’t learn if we don’t make mistakes. I tell my kids that all the time. You have made another video that shows that you are human and I believe that’s what we need more of. The younger generations are taught that it’s bad to fail. We need to stop being so tough on ourselves and try new things. Look! I wouldn’t be starting my tenth quilt if I didn’t take a risk and try quilting! Keep doing it all! I love learning about the many different fiber arts and farm life and you are an excellent teacher! Be well!

There's a new lace zip out at Amazon that you sew onto the right side of the fabric (which I thought would be nice for a project bag.) It reminds me of eyelet lace. I did see an application where you unzip to stitch a completely straight line (avoiding the zipper head.) I found that brilliant! At 65 my goal us to learn at least one new thing each day, hopefully more than one thing!

Over the last 2 years I learned a wet way to thread needle , any sewing needle! You can wet the tip of needle where the eye is
and slip thread right in! We used to wet the tip of the thread, I wet the of my finger, touch the hole on the needle, pick up my strand of thread& somehow the wetness attracts the thread, really no kidding it works! You probably already know this! I always enjoy the videos you share, thank you for your time ! And knowledge!

The last time I sewed in a zipper, I was 12 in Home Economics class and I flummoxed the teacher about how wrong I had actually gotten it. I must have erased the whole process from memory and haven't tried since. This made MUCH more sense to me!

Loads of hugs to Norma! She looks much younger than her age! Enjoyed this tutorial very very much , and now I'm inspired to try putting a zipper on a bag that will hold fabric alphabets that I made for my little grandson. Thanks Kate 👍🏼

Oh my goodness Kate, this is exactly how I put zippers in as well! Inside out and back to front. It confuses the begeebers out of me!!!! My brain just doesn't work the way I want it to. Just can't picture it. Thanks for the hearty laughter. Love your vibe. xx

Kate, I love that you show us the whole process, warts and all, because we all do them. I got a good laugh at your self talk, do it myself. I love the cushion, always thought they would be hard, going to make some for Christmas presents. Thank you for the quiet time to just enjoy. And believe me, we were talking back to you.

Well done with the zip. I have just realised my sister made me one to prop my iPad, she somehow eased some stuffing down to one end and stitched it across making a trough to sit the iPad in. I had forgotten and have been using a pillow to prop the pad on when watching tv in bed, have got it out and it is much better than a pillow. Thanks for that Kate.

This is great. I don't want to watch the experts, who make it look so easy; I appreciate watching a sewer with a similar skill set, yes, and fear, with zippers to mine. And, you did a great job!

I watched this all the way through and totally enjoyed it even though I do not sew. I love the shape, and it will be beautiful intermingled with other shapes of throw pillows. Thank you for sharing this and thank you Norma for supervising the job. Have a Blessed day.

Happy Sunday Kate! Love your glitches and pillow shape. Love how you laugh at yourself and make things so fun. A few years ago, I made some miniature versions that measure about 4", not stuffed but left empty, use them to hold my clips for crafting. So small and cute. Cheers!

Well done zipping lovely! Hahahaha.....I was having the cold sweats watching.......remembering my favourite trouser pattern I used to make (I must have made 10 pairs over time).....they were fitted over the the bottom/hips area up to the waist....totally smooth and lovely......with an invisible zip on the side up over the hip to the waist band. Argh, nightmare! This was SUCH a lovely watch, thank you!

Kate your plants are gorgeous. Norma has to supervise. She's a love. Wouldn't be a sewing video without her. If you had a zipper foot it would make putting a zipper in easier. Just fyi. Thanks for sharing. As always Kate you are an inspiration. You make sewing fun. When l was younger l made all kinds of Dolls for my Mom in law. Didn't use a lot of zippers. Anyway you did terrific.

Lovely pillow! You did a good job with zip! I remember taking a class on bag making and we followed similar steps with zip. Some forgot to leave zip open for later turning. It was in large bold print! Funny how we can miss something.
Your cat…. Lol! She wants to me on camera too. 20 years old… my dad had one that lived to be 23! I found out one day he let her lick vitamin E oil off his finger everyday! Ladybug… solid black and she always followed him around the veggie/fruit garden.
Missouri is about 20 miles from me. Missouri Star and Quilt is usually at every quilt show here. They are about 6 hrs away. They have great tutorials!
Ok! Back to knitting on my cardi! Using Wyoming Marino wool in DK for this one:)

You are far braver than I am. I used to make all of my own clothes with zippers etc. but I have lost the desire to even think of tackling those tasks now. Quilts are much more appealing to me.
