What many Queens fans are unaware of is that about half (maybe more) of the songs on Lullabies to Paralyze were already written and were set to be recorded in Spring 2004, while Nick was previously still in the band - until Jan. 2004. A Rolling Stones article from early as May 2003 confirms this. A number of the songs appear listed in the article, and there were other ones that featured Nick in the past (Medication, originally from side project Headband ft. Josh & Nick) along with Little Sister, which was originally written on Songs. I suspect Nick wrote a number of songs on & for the album, but was frozen out after the boot and didn't fight it.
"Little Sister" wasn't good enough for Songs for the Deaf. They left it off the album. So then it's the LEAD-OFF SINGLE for the next record? That speaks volumes as to how shitty the songs on Lullabies were. "Medication" was a Headband song, "Little Sister" was a Deaf leftover, and "Tangled Up in Plaid" was already written. Just before Lullabies came out, Homme told SPIN that "Long Slow Goodbye" was "the song [he was] most proud of...ever." When I read that, I thought Long Slow Goodbye would be some amalgam of Song for the Dead and Better Living Through Chemistry (Homme's most complex but beautiful songs). Instead...it was a fucking three chord mid-tempo ballad. Spare me. After Deaf, Homme's songwriting tanked. And now he and his faceless backing band go around touring as Queens but they are totally boring.

I’ve met nick a few years ago. He was playing in a small venue in Italy where i’ve played with my band lots of time (we literally played there again like a month ago). The live was finished (great live) we wanted to talk to nick but he was surrounded by 40+ people who were asking for pics and autographs and we didn’t want to bother him so we decided to wait a bit, we starded playing foosball and having a few beers. After taking pics and talking with all those people he came to us just to have a chat. We obviously stopped playing and started talking to him hahah I was wearing a taylor hawkins tshirt so he told us about how sad his death was for every person who knew him and anyone who knew him, about his funeral and other things. Then we told him that we were (still are) a band and that we played in the place where he was playing that night and he started asking us questions about our music, our influences and so on and we ended up having a nice chat with nick that lasted like 15 minutes or more. He was such a humble and friendly guy, hope to meet him again some day :)
Only saw them once with nick in the band, in 99 my first proper festival, I didn’t even know they were playing but they blew me away. My girlfriend said you like grunge you might like em so I ran down the hill at Milton Keynes bowl but got stuck at the back of the festival crowd. Still an excellent introduction & blows me away they still rocked when I saw them this year 25 !!! Years later! Bollocks I’m old 😂

QOTSA have never been the same since the kicked Nick out. Josh's voice is cool but not song after song after song. My interest in the new records is fucking nil.
Ignoring all the "he has a funny voice" comments from the Yanks, I'd just like to say; Thanks for giving Nick the time of day. If I listen to R or SFtD; all my favourite tracks have Nick making magic.
You missed a brief part of his history. He moved to Baltimore around 1996 for a short time with his girlfriend Val Fravaza who was Dan Higgs (lungfish) ex baby mama. Nick played with Stress Magnets where he met Rob Oswald who is drummer in Karma to Burn and almost a member of Queens of Stone Age but also a mess on drugs when he tried out for QOSA. I was friends with Val and Stress Magnets and apparently Nick wanted to kill me after I had Val over to smoke weed one day after work. She and I worked at a sushi bar together. Then he left Bmore and I was glad.
Worked the local crew stage work for a QOTSA concert at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in Asheville NC in, maybe it was ‘14… watched from the scaffolding up above the drummer, such an incredible show… they had that green room smelling SUPER SWEET!! Great band, hope everyone is healthy and happy and making music and memories. *That means YOU too reading this!!
Met him after a show 2 years ago. He took the time to thank every member of the audience individually by shaking their hand. Talked to him for a little bit and got a picture with him. Absolutely the most down to earth dude i've ever met, no ego at all.
I saw QOTSA live in a tiny club, 20 years ago. They were possibly the loudest band I've ever seen; it was almost alarming, and I knew people were getting permanent hearing damage. Legendary show, but they kinda had a weird anti-social vibe. amazing music of course, their old stuff is the best
As much as I hate to admit it they are very anti social. They're all drug addicts and rabble-rousers so it explains why they choose that lifestyle. Never meet your heroes.
Meanwhile Dave couldn't have slobbered over the Queens knobs and harder. It cleary made Kurt uncomfortable, understandably so. It sounded like he was doing an intro for a PBS special. Awkward...
I drank with him at the Yee Rustin Inn, in Los Feliz, CA in the Los Angeles area. I remember he took me out to his car and gave me a few CDs of some of his projects at the time. He seemed cool and just a fellow Rocker.
I remember I saw Mondo Generator live. Nick's bass guitar wasn't sounding right to him. So in the middle of a song he took his bass and repeatedly swung it at the ground. I asked him if I could have some of the broken bass he smiled and said 'No' 😂
I live in the high desert and see Nick around from time to time. Great guy. Another unsung legend out here, that has a lot of writing credits on early Queen's records is Mario (Boomer) Lalli.
Saw him play a solo acoustic set as opening act for Mark Lanegans band circa bubblegum... awesome gig. He was also part of lanegans band for said gig...
he first formed SONS OF KYUSS , along with josh homme and first released an lp under that first moniker , then a second one as kyuss " wretch " then " blues for the red sun " in 1992 ...
Well, you are sort of correct..... Chris Cockrell was the bassist for all songs on Sons of Kyuss including Black Widow and Deadly Kiss, but Nick did play on everything else on Wretch.
Anyone else notice a commonality amongst all the concerts in the 2000s??? Nobody blocking the view of other patrons and fans behind them holding up their freaking mobile phones. Everyone in just in the moment, enjoying the music and the talent of the performers on stage. Those were the good days of concert going. Then circa 2012/2013 the mobile started showing up at concerts and jacking up the experience for everyone. Now I don't even bother going to a concert unless it's advertised as a phone-free show.
If you have your head in your phone the entire gig, I get it, but why is everybody so triggered by the fact that people wanna store memories to look back on later? It's just pathetic.
@@jackasmaracas4362 Respectfully responding - Because the people holding up their phones are blocking the view of other patrons and fans behind them. I do get it that people want to remember their experience, but some people stand their with their phone in their hand recording the whole show. It's fine to snap a couple of photos, or record a part of the show - maybe even a very popular song when they perform it, to preserve the memory. I paid for a ticket to see the artist perform live with my eyes, not through the screen of the person in front of me. If I wanted to see a show on a screen I could have stayed home and watched it on television.
He almost ran me over in Portland when he was headed to the QOTSA show I was going to. Was the first time they played together in 10 years, couldn't be almost murdered by a more badass dude.

Nice work! New sub 👍
52 WEEKS OF FINGER MANAGMENT??? WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?? I NEVER HEAR OF THIS!
Not finger, he said HANGER management.
@CharlieBoy360 Oohhh!!! Right! My bad!😂
XDXDXD
*That means YOU too reading this!!
would love to also see a video about the wild story of Mark Lanegan !
I recommend his autobiographical book “Sing backwards and weep”, you will delve into the depths of his being, artistic and human.
@@vincenzocoda955 I got the audio book read by Lanegan. It hits hard.
one of the nicest people i’ve ever met. he kicked it before a dwarves show last year shooting the shit about the stooges!
After Brazil the " nick got arrested again this time in South America." Noone knows any geography anymore?
He's talking about Brazil, not a different incident
@Igor.J.Delgado well I guess I should've payed attention better then. :p
Met him after a show 2 years ago.
He took the time to thank every member of the audience individually by shaking their hand. Talked to him for a little bit and got a picture with him. Absolutely the most down to earth dude i've ever met, no ego at all.
2 years ago is not 2003. I never really had a problem with him, though he definitely wasn't as friendly 20 years ago.
Met Nick at Psycho Las Vegas. Bought him a Jack n Coke and chatted for a while. Super cool and chill.
It’s weird how Kurt sort of berates Dave about his Kyuss weed and mushrooms observation all things considered.
QOTSA died when Oliveri was fired
I saw QOTSA live in a tiny club, 20 years ago. They were possibly the loudest band I've ever seen; it was almost alarming, and I knew people were getting permanent hearing damage. Legendary show, but they kinda had a weird anti-social vibe. amazing music of course, their old stuff is the best
As much as I hate to admit it they are very anti social. They're all drug addicts and rabble-rousers so it explains why they choose that lifestyle. Never meet your heroes.
its so nice to see mr cobain being a new dad, there's not much footage but you can tell he was so calm and loving. aah
For sure
Meanwhile Dave couldn't have slobbered over the Queens knobs and harder. It cleary made Kurt uncomfortable, understandably so. It sounded like he was doing an intro for a PBS special. Awkward...
@@CharlieBoy360* Kyuss
What kind of dad abandones their child for life because he's sad?
It was kind of funny to hear a massive junkie say "what's so cool about that?" Regarding taking mushrooms and smoking weed
Queens arent so good without Nick⚡
I drank with him at the Yee Rustin Inn, in Los Feliz, CA in the Los Angeles area. I remember he took me out to his car and gave me a few CDs of some of his projects at the time. He seemed cool and just a fellow Rocker.
I remember I saw Mondo Generator live. Nick's bass guitar wasn't sounding right to him. So in the middle of a song he took his bass and repeatedly swung it at the ground. I asked him if I could have some of the broken bass he smiled and said 'No' 😂
RIP Mark.🤘
I live in the high desert and see Nick around from time to time. Great guy. Another unsung legend out here, that has a lot of writing credits on early Queen's records is Mario (Boomer) Lalli.
songs for the deaf will go down as one of the best rock albums of all time. so many classics
He's wiser, but still making wild and unapologetic music. Classic narrator ending.
Out of all the bands I’ve never seen live, QOTSA are my favorite.
Need to mention he’s a quality bass man.
Saw him play a solo acoustic set as opening act for Mark Lanegans band circa bubblegum... awesome gig. He was also part of lanegans band for said gig...
You missed out his time with Masters of Reality - pretty awesome band with Josh Homme and Chris Goss.
Awesome band!
Josh was never in MOR
@@acem1230 umm. Yeah he was.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flak_%27n%27_Flight
Did they do "Deep in the Hole?" I forgot I had that album.
@@acem1230 Toured with them after Deep in the Hole, the live album Flak n Flight from that tour is an absolute belter.
I love this narration. No more of that ai or whatever
Fk AI
he first formed SONS OF KYUSS , along with josh homme and first released an lp under that first moniker , then a second one as kyuss " wretch " then " blues for the red sun " in 1992 ...
Well, you are sort of correct..... Chris Cockrell was the bassist for all songs on Sons of Kyuss including Black Widow and Deadly Kiss, but Nick did play on everything else on Wretch.
sons of kyuss were formed by brant bjork and josh homme.
Awesome footage!
Really interesting research.
Great video.
Bring him back and maybe Josh will stop being so gay
The Joey C era is the best era
Joey’s a monster, the best drummer they ever had.
@ I agree 100%
QOTSA were the last great rock band that mattered, and Nick was a big part of that.
I meet Nick at muddy Roots. Really cool to me .🤘🏻He did some kyuss songs with John .really dope
That year was fantastic. Dwarves, Nick Solo and then with John Garcia doing Kyuss.
I was at the Halloween show at the forum when queens brought him out for the end of the show. The last time he played with the band
14:00 Did Nick really have fightings with Mark Lanegan?
Francis Bean cameo? 😁
Best music QOTSA ever made because nick would tell Josh when songs sucked… now he doesn’t have that filter any more
Anyone else notice a commonality amongst all the concerts in the 2000s??? Nobody blocking the view of other patrons and fans behind them holding up their freaking mobile phones. Everyone in just in the moment, enjoying the music and the talent of the performers on stage. Those were the good days of concert going.
Then circa 2012/2013 the mobile started showing up at concerts and jacking up the experience for everyone. Now I don't even bother going to a concert unless it's advertised as a phone-free show.
Yeah man I notice that about concerts in the 70s too!
Nobody had cameras on their phones dude. And if they did they were awful. Come on
If you have your head in your phone the entire gig, I get it, but why is everybody so triggered by the fact that people wanna store memories to look back on later? It's just pathetic.
@@jackasmaracas4362 Respectfully responding - Because the people holding up their phones are blocking the view of other patrons and fans behind them. I do get it that people want to remember their experience, but some people stand their with their phone in their hand recording the whole show. It's fine to snap a couple of photos, or record a part of the show - maybe even a very popular song when they perform it, to preserve the memory. I paid for a ticket to see the artist perform live with my eyes, not through the screen of the person in front of me. If I wanted to see a show on a screen I could have stayed home and watched it on television.
Absolute legend for his work with Kyuss alone
He almost ran me over in Portland when he was headed to the QOTSA show I was going to. Was the first time they played together in 10 years, couldn't be almost murdered by a more badass dude.
I met him in London. Genuinely nice. Also the best ever QOTSA bassist. Different band after he left.
Very interesting. Thankyou.
Maybe check out Crash Worship if you haven’t already.
nice guy, met him a few times, he can talk punkrock for hours
He's a true rock ''n roller, doesn't give a fuck. Respect for that. I remember the RiR episode too and I think it was rock 'n' roll AF.
JOSH!!! BRING THE MAN BACK!!!!! He’s way too talented and this is ROCK AND ROLL!! A no-brainer if you ask me…
But nick didn’t give a fuck … the narration is perfect bru
Other than the fact that he doesn't pronounce Josh Homme correctly
