The best way to explain the setting of these levels is Earth. The sky is that of Earth, obviously. The levels take place in a hellish fortress constructed just outside the passage out of Hell to secure the invasion and make sure the Doomguy couldn't come back. It's even got a brand new Mastermind assigned to lead it. The fact that Hell has invaded Earth also explains why these levels contain many more enemies (and stronger ones too) - Hell dedicated the most resources thus far to the invasion of Earth, and this fortress had extreme strategic importance.
This and E4M6 are by far my favorite Classic Doom maps. There are multiple strategies for dealing with the spawning enemies and the five barons, that’s pretty awesome for such a tidy map. For those having problems 5:57 with the enemies in the small house: get the chaingun but don’t walk further. Walk back and take the ‘cursed’ health bonuses. Run back to ledge in the front of the small house en kill them left and in front of you, that way there is more distance between you and the enemies. When the Baron appears, get back into the house and let him infight behind the gate.

+John Kassavetis I believe it is supposed to chronicle the player's return journey from Hell back to Earth. There are elements of both themes throughout the episode.
I believe Thy Flesh Consumed is set on Earth, because you see the skies with orange clouds? They look like the clouds we see in the episode 3 ending sequence, which happens to be in the green fields of Earth as the story implies, so maybe they are the same clouds.
I did not know that picking health bonuses triggers hell. Such videos are like full manuals included. Thank you! P.S. The opera voice playing on this level is worth a 10 thousand theatre to hear. And such level titles as this particular level, plus "Perfect Hatred", "Unruly Evil", "House of Pain" and many others are just masterpieces of genre.
Yeah, if you grab those health bonuses before killing everything, it spawns every enemy at once. Quite possibly one of the hardest maps in classic Doom history.
LOL you make this very interesting. And after you said this secret with NINE INCH NAILS I checked the Band out and now I am a fan :) And this with episode 4 and almost every level name is from the bible :) Very interesting stuff. I liked the video :)
I shouldn't have to say this, but I guess it was a long time ago. NIN - Nine Inch Nails, did the soundtrack to Quake, which I believe was in production at the time of the release of this doom episode (1995). Just as the (later removed) swastika in an early doom level was a hint that a new wolfenstein was being produced, so this was a hint that quake was being produced.

The secret of NIN is because the designer of this particularly map, is american mcgee wich is a fan of this ban. i love your videos im actually replaying the game is full of nostalgia xD thanks for your work
I remember first playing this map, and being overrun by enemies and suddenly the baron's roar and being like well I'm screwed. I have had enough fun for today.
Where were the walkthroughs 20 years ago when I spent AGES trying to work out how you get onto those ledges for the shotgun shells and health? I never figured it out but now I know. I kept forgetting to press "enter" at every possible ****ing panel even when I was losing health rapidly in the green slime.
Hell yeah NIИ! I knew about that secret already, but it's good to see it get some publicity XD I think you're right about the difficulty of this level. Not looking forward to doing it with respawns and kamikazes... but I didn't know about that secret exit to the red key room, so hopefully that'll save my life. Thanks for that, Mac!
I heard this episode takes place somewhere between hell and earth. You don’t actually run into any of the doom 2 demons they’re too busy taking over earth. These are the remnants of the masterminds army and yes as people find out there is more than one spider mastermind. It’s sort of an interphase of the portal between hell and earth.
The NIN secret is so that you step on it and it closes with the spectres blocking you and, you know, die with 4 barons of hell and everything else. The point is that you know that you need to escape fast after "switching" the torch, so the secret doesnt make much sense, if you know what to do.
They definitely upped the difficulty in this episode compared to the other 3. Probably after Doom 2 they realized it needed to be more difficult. This map is especially hard.
This map is def the hardest map in the game. I played through all of DOOM2, DOOM 2016, DOOM VFR, and DOOM 1 episodes 1-3 all on Ultra Violence difficulty. And I could not beat this episode without looking up this walkthrough.
Well, the fact that id Software hired Trent Reznor to do the sound fx and music for Quake certainly says something, along with the NIN logo in this map.
Since you can't access it when trapped in the area behind the red door, it's only useful if you manage to escape the room BEFORE the walls fully raise, and there are still barons inside.
Lol, I just managed to beat the level on my own, but decided to see, if people felt the same way about it, as I did :D Very entertaining walkthrough btw!
One addition thing to note about the "Ultimate Doom" release. It also coincided with the release of the Doom 95 source port. (Which is the first version of Doom I played.)
Spent some time with E4M1 and 2 and found a way that made the maps easier. Especially M2 since i often fail to grab the BFG early on. So M1: Doing everything like you until i went into the middle section with the chaingun. Instead of grabbing the chaingun i just take out the imps in the corners, leave the area through the elevator and take the health pickus on the left side, triggering the Baron. I run back into the corner and shoot everything that comes my way until the cyberdemon teleports out of the middle section. Then i run back in and take him out using the shotgun. Grab the red key and leave via elevator again. That way the hidden door kan stay closed and i'm save inside and don't have to watch my back. In the room with the deathtrap i don't trigger the imps. Just go to the left and touch the torch, then run out and trigger the barons. Back into the middle section. The imps will follow because the wall lowered in front of them. take everything out with the rocket launcher through the bars. Taking the Baron out early means you have much more time while moving around and don't have to run like hell with a Baron of Hell tailing you or worst case after triggering the trap 3 behind you and 1 in front of you. Also you can leave the door closed and no stragglers wander in to find a yummy doom guy. M2: Beginning is the same. Then But at the stairs with the shotgunners and teleporter on top i have 2 different tactics that take a bit of haste out of this map. 1: run into the chamber with the berserk pack but don't teleport out. wait until the Barons teleportet away and then take care of the caco Demons from the window. It's pretty much easy picking. They can't surround you through the window and the chamber where the barons were in has rockets and shotgun bullets if you need them. 2: don't run into the room. Take out the shotgunners then trigger the first Baron. He can't reach you as the waist high wall will only lower if you enter the room. Take him out, trigger the second Baron in the same area. Kill him as well and then take care of the caco demons. If you run out of bullets you can lure them to the window and punch them out. Then teleport to the blue armor and get back to the starting position taking the rad suit and super charge. trigger the 4 Barons by grabbing the plasma gun and back up to the stairs. Teleport to the beginning and move to the pillar with the entrance to the 4 Barons. As they can't come through the door you can just take them out with rockets or shotgun. In this case they won't even shoot at you most of the times. Right before i jump down to the shotgun i blast another Baron from relative safety of the higher position. That way i can cheese 6 barons relatively easy and don't have to worry about the caco Demons all that much. And it saves a ton of plasma amunition.
This level is kicking my ass on hurt me plenty 😆 and I cant find out how to drop those health's. And what does that switch do!?!?!? Never knew that wall opened where the rocket launcher is. Thank you!
By the way, I do everything like you and I get 50% secrets in this level ;/ I thought that I was doing something wrong, but I tried planty of times. Maybe it's something wrong with Steam version? I should buy DVD. In Steam version there is no even announcement when you found secret.
I think Episode 4 takes place in Purgatory in my opinion. Doomguy most likely went back through the portal that lead him to Earth from E3M8 Dis and then sees his bunny Daisy’s head on a pike, thus seeking vengance for her
i'm playing this map on switch and the first time i saw the the 5 giant dude i was thanking "how df i supposed to finish this map at 100%?" i saw this video and i don't think i ever elaborate this strategy in my whole life, so GG. Sorry for the English I'm from 🇮🇹
This level is a dinosaur dick in difficulty. I came to watch this playthrough again as I decided to play all of DOOM again and there were some secrets I had forgotten. I can see how E4M1 could turn some away because of the difficulty but there are some real gems in episode 4 so it is totally worth the suffering of the first two levels. I remember seeing that NIN secret back in 1995 and I was indeed "Ooooooh!' Keep in mind, this was before Quake which came out the following year and NIN did the music and sound for it which was a pretty big deal. Episode 4 and DOOM 2 still feel new to me.
Just started this episode and it has always been a pain for me. After some tries, this time I had to watch this walkthrough before doing it myself LOL. In fact the strategy here is try to make the enemies infight with themselves in order to save ammo, especially from the barons of hell. Of course the imps and spectors are much weaker, but at least they can take some health from the barons before I have to kill them by myself. Agree with BigMacDavis that this map is harder than any other from Doom 2, even maps 27 and 29 (which I consider the hardest there).
The reason episode 4 was released is id alternated between mail-order release & retail. By releasing it again retail, they were able to capitalize off the already huge amount of buzz & put the game in the hands of people who didn't get to buy it via mail-order. To sweeten the deal, they made an extra episode & titled it Ultimate Doom. It was available as a patch to people who already owned the mail-order release. I own both versions; both purchased when they came out.
I went to get the blue key after letting the barons out and my game did this crazy glitch where I couldn't leave the area with the blue key, its like there was an invisible wall inbetween me and the nin logo. If I shot a rocket I died, I repeated it multiple times to make sure it wasn't just a one time thing. Weird af.
NEar to the end, you actually do not need to fire a shot randomly after obtaining the blue key. That just makes no sense. The barons will spawn no matter what, but if it helps ,you can fire a shot at one of the hell knights/ barons, and they will all spawn along with the invisis pinky demons.
I just tried this map again for the first time in years and when I finished it I had 2 shells left. No other ammo at all. It's ridiculous how little they give you here... E4m2 may now be a serious challenge
Remember back when two Barons of Hell were considered an episode ending boss fight? Thy Flesh Consumed just throws those guys at you like they were mooks.
For as tough as this level is, I'd still prefer to play it 100 times before playing Unholy Cathedral again. This walkthrough was a great help. I never thought to have the Barrons infight with the imps. You did awesome work with this walkthrough!
Actually there are health packs in the two corner areas that can be located from the teleporters that are hidden behind the rocket launchers that you revealed in this video. At least in the first Bethesda version of Doom for the Xbox 360. Maybe they aren't on the PC version ?
its horrible, when the baron does not teleport out (6:20) but instead starts to claw you to pieces...! it has happened to me few times. sometimes he just wont teleport out of the building : O
Do you wanna know something else that is stupid about this map? If you lower that NIN logo, before you got the blue key. and you accidentally step on it while you are getting the key. you will be trapped in that room, and the game glitches up.
The first time I played this map it made me think I upped the difficulty by mistake.

Thanks for this I was so confused at the end with all the barons thinking there just was not enough ammunition for the level
I am not sure what I enjoy more: playing Doom or watching a BigMacDavis walkthrough of Doom.
LOL you make this very interesting. And after you said this secret with NINE INCH NAILS I checked the Band out and now I am a fan :) And this with episode 4 and almost every level name is from the bible :) Very interesting stuff. I liked the video :)
“It can be a b..., rather nuisance.” 😂😂😂
Oh god, this mission is absolutely BRUTAL. First mission, and you get five Barons. Absolute nightmare to beat.
Jeff youre my friend. Youre always telling cool facts and showing all 100% thank you. There should be more people like you. Btw i completed Doom II many maps 100% as well im back on ultimate doom finished E1 with 100%
I absolutely love your walkthroughs man! Maybe it's your voice idk(fa) haha but you've got tons of knowledge and you should keep on doing what you're doing!! Love the Wolf walkthroughs as well man!
Love your voice and analysis. Very thorough and unique
The secret of NIN is because the designer of this particularly map, is american mcgee wich is a fan of this ban. i love your videos im actually replaying the game is full of nostalgia xD thanks for your work
Very Good, I'm Brazilian and learned the walkthrough of Doom with you, thanks Big Mac Davis 👏👏👍
Thanks for the Tutorial, New subscriber🫡
Hell yeah NIИ! I knew about that secret already, but it's good to see it get some publicity XD
I think you're right about the difficulty of this level. Not looking forward to doing it with respawns and kamikazes... but I didn't know about that secret exit to the red key room, so hopefully that'll save my life. Thanks for that, Mac!
Yeah dude, Nine Inch Nails XD
Why do I see you everywhere I post? Not that I mind, it's just funny XD Ya stalker lol
This map is biggest ammount of trolling we ever recieved from John Romero in my opinion.
Thy Flesh Consumed takes place on Earth.
The NIN secret is so that you step on it and it closes with the spectres blocking you and, you know, die with 4 barons of hell and everything else. The point is that you know that you need to escape fast after "switching" the torch, so the secret doesnt make much sense, if you know what to do.
+BigMacDavis Yeah, NiN, well, Trent Renzor, lead singer of NiN, did the sound track for another of ID's games, Quake 1. :D
White Tiger Gaming Reznor is the missing link between Doom and Super Mario World.
Almost like the very first boss of Sonic 2 for Game Gear--they throw the hardest (before the final) boss right at the get-go!
What's good about this map is that it's relatively SHORT. Plutonia, TNT, Doom 2 levels are usually longer
Well, the fact that id Software hired Trent Reznor to do the sound fx and music for Quake certainly says something, along with the NIN logo in this map.
What is activated by the second switch in the room with the spiritual (small) armor?
Since you can't access it when trapped in the area behind the red door, it's only useful if you manage to escape the room BEFORE the walls fully raise, and there are still barons inside.
Thanks for your videos,@BigMacDavis they were extremely useful.
I appreciate the biblical readings. Never new this episode levels' names came from it
Lol, I just managed to beat the level on my own, but decided to see, if people felt the same way about it, as I did :D Very entertaining walkthrough btw!
Thanks!! :)
One addition thing to note about the "Ultimate Doom" release. It also coincided with the release of the Doom 95 source port. (Which is the first version of Doom I played.)
Love this episode. The music and crazy up shift in difficulty make it wild.
If I'm remembering correct the setting of Thy Flesh Consumed is purgatory if you take Sigil as canon.
BMD , I would love to see a revisit to this map , to see if you still think it’s hard today as back then.
11:23 zero in every language LOL
I love playing this map by itself on UV when I want to play a short game of Doom. It's such a rush!
This level is kicking my ass on hurt me plenty 😆 and I cant find out how to drop those health's. And what does that switch do!?!?!?
Never knew that wall opened where the rocket launcher is. Thank you!
this helped me greatly. only bummer part is the barons will not ever fight eachother. never figured out why either
Awesome. E4 is biblical. It's a Holy War.
Sorry for the English I'm from 🇮🇹
dude you have been a staple of the walkthrough section of gaming forever, bless up man
This level is a dinosaur dick in difficulty.
It would be SO COOL to get my hands on a mail-order release of Doom. I'd kill for that, lol.
I suppose the secret is NiN logo itself, and secret activator is placed there to make sure user has noticed this easter egg )
Weird af.
This map always feels iconic to me for some reason. Probably because of the pure difficulty of it.
NEar to the end, you actually do not need to fire a shot randomly after obtaining the blue key. That just makes no sense. The barons will spawn no matter what, but if it helps ,you can fire a shot at one of the hell knights/ barons, and they will all spawn along with the invisis pinky demons.
Very nice video!
It's crazy how to get 100% o.O
Yes, you are very right about the low ammo. I was fighting in the and with the fists in this level^^
I don't know why... but this guy's voice reminds me of SwaggerSouls for some reason.
I just tried this map again for the first time in years and when I finished it I had 2 shells left. No other ammo at all. It's ridiculous how little they give you here... E4m2 may now be a serious challenge
Good luck. :)
Remember back when two Barons of Hell were considered an episode ending boss fight? Thy Flesh Consumed just throws those guys at you like they were mooks.
Yeah knee deep is a cake walk. But that level was not so easy from pistol start (no rockets) with all the specters coming at you...
On PS4 here and I noticed the same thing, health and ammo.
@@delftware2.05 Weird. Did he not notice them in the PC version ?
@@delftware2.05 Or maybe they don't exist in the PC version ? Or maybe he is playing a higher difficulty level where those med-packs don't exist ?
its horrible, when the baron does not teleport out (6:20) but instead starts to claw you to pieces...! it has happened to me few times. sometimes he just wont teleport out of the building : O
Do you wanna know something else that is stupid about this map?
If you lower that NIN logo, before you got the blue key. and you accidentally step on it while you are getting the key.
you will be trapped in that room, and the game glitches up.
