Happy to help! Just know that this is intentionally grittier, so if you want it more smooth, then you can use something else instead of the baking soda... Personally, I love the texture of it with Baking Soda
Anyone know how the baking powder formula holds up over time? If you make an art piece that will be in a humid climate? Thanks for sharing this information!
Hey Carolyn! I did this with talc last month, but I will be switching to baking soda next time. Much cheaper! Question for ya....I would really like to make a clear gesso for sealing pages. Have you ever experimented with no paint? If so, would I add water or more glue instead?
I just grabbed my grungy experiment recipe book and found that several years ago I experimented with clear gesso 1/2 cup cornstarch instead of baking soda and a teaspoon of white acrylic paint instead of 2oz. The rest of the ingredients were 3 tbsp PVC/school glue and enough water to get the consistency you want
I'm so happy you told me about this video, Care. I'm not sure why I've never understood Mod Podge and Gesso's difference until I watched this video. The paint. I'm not the brightest crayon in the box sometimes. Lol. Thank you so much for sharing this tutorial and recipe.
I personally haven’t had that - but would say that more years would help to know. I still believe that it is good for the less professional pieces. If you really are concerned with your piece maintaining over generations and see it as a piece of fine art, I would buy gesso vs make it. For my personal purposes, this hasn’t changed in color so far.
@@DisabledArtists Thanks for the video. Windsor and Newton stopped shipping to Africa because of the pandemic. So we are out of essential materials like Gesso, varnish etc in Lagos Nigeria. Will try this DIY supplements as I cannot trust pre- primed canvases.
-Baking soda -calcium -plaster paris -talc . Can you help me list from 4 of them from one that have more tooth to the least? Also which one is more flexible and one that least flexible? I really appreciate your video. Thank you so much
I just realized I never answered your question - am so sorry ... most tooth to least ... baking soda, calcium, plaster talc ... talc actually acts like a smoothing agent and helps make the brush strokes smith out (so wear a mask if using)... I don’t know the answer on flexibility .... on colors there are many super toxic ones ... so we must always be careful
There are different chemicals in latex and I don’t know how those would react to baking soda, but a few famous artists uses latex paint in the past and have heard that curators claim they are more work to keep looking good
Personally I would not, only because I do not know if it would last beyond 10 years. The science is sound, but the quality of your acrylic paint will really matter for a long term quality.
Flipee .. yes... check this out willkempartschool.com/the-trouble-with-oil/ another thing some folks will do on top of their gesso before their oil is an under layer of an acrylic for a quick dry undertone
I had to use about a 1/2 cup of water & about 3 oz of paint because it was so clumpy, I even used my mixer but it still came out gritty, is there any way to fix that?
Mine is gritty as well (not super smooth, but I like the gritty) the recipe changes too, because some paints require more or less - I sometimes have to add more water and remix it again (my container isn’t perfectly air tight) - it’s ok with me
Oh dear lord thanks for the warning! Anecdotal or not, I've been on bad terms with roaches since hurricane Katrina! Lol I dont need them in my house here in Wa state!
It is very grainy compared to marble dust - to be less grainy I now sometimes sift it - (also add a bit less baking soda). I personally love that extra gritty texture
Based on what I just read acrylic gesso looks like it can be used with oil paints (just don’t oversand the gesso) I read it here www.artistsnetwork.com/art-mediums/oil-painting/can-acrylic-gesso-support-your-oils/
Love how your forward and to the point. Honestly. LOVE THIS
Thank you :)
Thank you for save my money to buy expensive prime gesso❤

Thank you for sharing this recipe and it’s helpful.💕💕💕
Thank you so much for this recipe! I was looking for something specifically for my junk journals!
Awesome… :) this will give a great texture
And for a different texture use cornstarch and if you want you can always add sand.
Adding mica would be another way to adjust the coverage your gesso provides. Using a more pigmented paint would def do this!
Agree and may add a shimmer with some. Let me know how it goes.
Thank you for gesso recipe
Anyone know how the baking powder formula holds up over time? If you make an art piece that will be in a humid climate?
Thanks for sharing this information!
Thank you so much for making this video! Who knew you could use baking soda or cornstarch!!! Money saving, here I come!
And healthier to breathe... go figure 😃
Wouldnt it rot with time??
Thank you, very helpful!
Has nice texture! Never tried with baking soda, will try next time I decide to make my own gesso. Tfs! xo Rosie.
Personally I live that grit too 😁
Awesome, thank you for the recipe. I shared your video in our Bible Journaling group
That’s awesome... thank you
You’re doing great! I’m a terrible cook!
this is perfect for folks that are sensitive to talc smells, I haven't tried to make my own yet
Great Tuesday Morning, thanks for sharing. Nice gesso.

Care Hart -q
FYI - this clear gesso is not as durable - so if for a commission or project you want to keep many years you might want to buy the clear
Just for Tris
CLEAR GESSO:
1 Cup White Glue
¼ Cup Water
4-5 Heaping Tbsp Powdered Marble

Love your videos!!
Thank you! 💓
Thanks for the video 🌸
Do you think it can change it's color or get yellowish with time? (With baking soda)

GOOD.SAY THE PURPOSE OF BAKUNG SODA IN GESSO....PL
Adds grit/tooth to the gesso
Whats the difference between using baking soda and a baby powder? which is better? thanks
baby powder is smoother, but talc has known carcinogens and folks should not be breathing it in.
-Baking soda
-calcium
-plaster paris
-talc
.
Can you help me list from 4 of them from one that have more tooth to the least?
Also which one is more flexible and one that least flexible?
I really appreciate your video. Thank you so much
Thank you but ... Talc = toxic
@@DisabledArtists titanium,cadmium colors... =x100.. toxic

@@DisabledArtists thank you so much, I appreciate your answer. Gonna try some baking soda in the next painting.
One other thing ... I’ve sifted the baking soda for a smoother texture- but personally still like the rougher texture better
Is this gesso could be used in watercolor painting?
If I don't add color to this will it made gesso for acrylic
Syed Saeed Asghar Asghar it would be clear gesso but bear in mind the powder is white
so it works huh? I tried All-Purpose joint compound and it cracked lol gonna try this
oh my the way will it work if i use other colors?
Yep... Love it with other color... I like. Intake grunge and texture, so my favorite is by blending acrylic colors to the various shades of sand
@@DisabledArtists thanks 🧡
GREAT! Thank you!
why not talc? i saw one tutorial used baby powder? kindly enlighten
It is definitely way smoother, but there are known carcinogens in talc - I want to do my best to keep folks as healthy as possible
can i use 100% acrylic latex paint? if so, will i only have to omit the school glue?
There are different chemicals in latex and I don’t know how those would react to baking soda, but a few famous artists uses latex paint in the past and have heard that curators claim they are more work to keep looking good
Can this sort of gesso be used for egg tempera painting?
I don't' see why not, but have not tried it -- i forgot to sift my baking soda in this video to reduce the grit... but personally i love that grit
I went to Hobby Lobby and they only had a large bottle for $12.99 ! TY
Would ommiting the white paint turn it into clear gesso?
Yep
What's the difference between using baking soda and talcum powder? Thanks
Talc is finer, but also has a proven cancer risk
Talcum powder could have perfume which is oil based.
Does this work just as well with regular white cheap washable school glue or does it have to be the Glue All type?
Yes, the washable school glue works just as well.
Do you find it cracks at all? Thanks for recipe
I haven’t had it crack, but I tend to have it thin... if you use it thick and find it cracks please let me know
Can I use Fevicol in place of elmers school glue? Thanks 🙏
I am not familiar with this glue, so I am not sure... but I always encourage experimenting
From what I have read ... it looks like you can use Fevicol in place of Elmers
Can you add everything without paint?
Can we use normal asian paint adhesive instead of PVA glue
I am not aware of its base, so cannot answer with certainty
Thank you!
Since it has acrylic paint in it can it be used for Encaustic Painting?
I have not tested that, but acrylic likely is not absorbent enough to use encaustic (the wax needs to absorb into something)
Would you recommend this be used on a commissioned project? If so, that'd be excellent!
Personally I would not, only because I do not know if it would last beyond 10 years. The science is sound, but the quality of your acrylic paint will really matter for a long term quality.
Thank you!
Cool idea
Thank you
Pvc glue or PVA glue
PVA glue … this is like white school glue
Will this work for oil painting?
Oil can go on top of acrylic, but never put acrylic on oil
Care Hart ok thanks for replying fast, so if I’m going to oil paint I can use this as my gesso then paint over it?
Flipee .. yes... check this out willkempartschool.com/the-trouble-with-oil/ another thing some folks will do on top of their gesso before their oil is an under layer of an acrylic for a quick dry undertone
Ok thanks I will add a layer of acrylic paint before I paint.

I don’t want to inhale Plaster of Paris....so baking soda or cornstarch does it for me.
Totally agree and I have heard that cornstarch attracts cockroaches over time - but that is anecdotal and possibly regional
Oh dear lord thanks for the warning! Anecdotal or not, I've been on bad terms with roaches since hurricane Katrina! Lol I dont need them in my house here in Wa state!
What happened if I didn’t add the paint?
Then it acts more as a sealer
Care Hart What’s a sealer?
Can I use drywall primer and sealer behr house paint instead of white acrylic paint
From what I know of drywall primer should be pva based and act as a pva glue... your house-paint on the other hand may crack and not last....
😂😂 I thought she will about to turn off the camera when she said thank you. I watched until she filled in the gesso in a small container.
🤣 I was new to videos ❤️
Great idea now sis were did ya get that container you put your gesso in??
The gesso container is an upcycled candy jar I bought at a farmers market - it originally had runts init
Looks beautiful although a bit grainy. Do you think the soda may disolve over time?
It is very grainy compared to marble dust - to be less grainy I now sometimes sift it - (also add a bit less baking soda). I personally love that extra gritty texture
@@DisabledArtists thx for taking the time to reply - definitely going to make it and thx for the easy to follow tutorial. 🤗
Thank you 😊
PVC glue or PVA glue?
PVA glue like Elmer’s school glue
Nice, but I want to see it applied on canvas, not paper.
Cn i use ths gesso fr oil paint??

Please correct your recipe in the same measurement units ( US or Europe). You mixed tbsp, cup and oz. Thanks
not satisfied
Hopefully another recipe works well for you then or you alter the ingredients a bit
