For those who want a bit of context, this is intended to replace the Eurofighter Typhoon, not the the F-35. Thought details are unclear, what will most likely be the case is the F-35 will be a multi role fighter bomber as well as the compliment of the UK's Naval arm, whilst the Tempest will replace the Typhoon as the dedicated air to air fighter. Another thing to point out is the name which follows another RAF plane from WW2, the ledgendery CAS Typhoon, which was replaced by the Tempest.
The UK has created so many powerful and iconic aircraft. We've been out of the game for a while doing collaborative projects such as the Typhoon, Tornado and F-35 (15% of each airframe is being built in the UK), so it's good to see us once again making another entry into the annals of jet history.
And for those squealing that the UK 'can't afford this', grow a brain. Nations like South Korea, Turkey and Japan are building their own 5th and 6th generation fighters. Russia who is still making next gen aircraft has an economy smaller than SOUTH KOREA'S and that is about to be bypassed by MEXICO. Start having a bit more faith in your own country.

Wanderer628 Exactly, we do this stuff well, and if we export it too then it could be very profitable

First of all, South Korea, Turkey and Japan are not building their own fighters. South Korea depends on whether Indonesia will purchase its KFX to fund its development. Japan cancelled its own program, and don't let me get started with Turkey and its economy right now. Russia's Su-57 aircraft is fast turning into a white elephant and India, which contributes a large chunk of its development budget is very likely to pull out of the project.
Finally, you seem to forget that Sweden was invited as a partner to the Tempest program at the time of its conception, in the hopes they would contribute funds and expertise through SAAB, thus continuing the longstanding cooperation with BAE for the international exports of the Gripen.
My personal belief is that this is nothing more than a Trojan horse to force the French and the Germans to assign a preferred partner status in their joint FCAS/SCAF program to the UK.
I have to say though, an elegant design, particularly the air intakes and the back fuselage-tail sections.

I wish Australia would partner on this.

Honestly, I think Australia is exactly who we need to buy into this programme for it to really live up to its potential. The Australians take their military research seriously, have pretty significant strategic needs that this aircraft could serve if properly adapted, and also, with Australia’s technological and industrial strengths, it just makes sense. Besides which, as a former Australian treasurer once said about taxation, ‘the broader the base, the lower the rate’. Translation: more buyers equals a larger production run and a lower base unit cost.

Great news limeys you're gonna have also next generation fighters of your own not just our F35s... together with those two new huge aircraft carriers this is surely gonna be impressive. Germany should take example after being black passenger for so many years.

Hi Trev. Don't forget, a fair size chunk of the F35 is British too.

Not looking very potent, inlets look like a sub sonic trainer half the speed of a f16 and low range thanks to its tinyness 🤣 GL.

The F35 did not exist when this fighter was first realised, essentially much learnt from this project went into the F35. The tempest is essentially the F35's big brother and will do all the things the F35 nay sayers bitched about.

that's a little ironic saying the Americans would've been well behind in jet technology if not for the British and who built up their rocket programs???

All stealth airframes look similar for a reason, it's because radar stealth hasn't advanced from one country over another in the past 25 years to any great degree. DARPA have stated radar Stealth may have reached its limits.
They are even examining the need for total air superiority, ie you don't have to sweep the skies of all opposition and wipe out every SAM system to complete your own mission. Interesting concept if you have the right tools.

    • @zipz8423
      @zipz8423 5 років тому

Even if Stealth gets busted , the other 5th gem advances the F-35 has will still make it a great aircraft, abilities it can still leverage like sensor fusion, targeting ability and SA. Just hope the engine has a decent power upgrade margin / roadmap.

@ fuzzX Lol, we gave you the jet engine in the first place, not to mention state-of-the-art radar 😂
