"Roguelike" every reviewer of Returnal at the moment
This
Literally why I'm here bro lmao
@@officialteamlingo it's like they all think everyone knows that term lol
Why I'm here too.. gamer since the 80s and this term 'roguelike' is new to me.
Thats why im here
You absolutely can not convince me that those two game creators of rouge are not the same man.
One guy was his future self who went back in time to tell his past self to work on the game.
Compare the two noses.
Thanks Tyler! That was very informative, and very well made.
Now after I have this info, it finally solved my confusion on why steam labels things as Roguelites, and I no longer feel dumb thinking maybe I always misheard when people say Roguelike. :D keep up the good work!
Nowadays everything is soulslike...
Nowadyas everything is *sus* (and a jojo reference)
I would say “Spelunky” and the other examples are more like platformers. When I see the original “Rogue”, I immediately think of “Castle Adventure” which came about several years later. It might be the first video game I ever played. Great video.👍🏻👾
platformers seem merely like a different angle view of the roguelike gameplay, like topdown
Can't something be both. Like an fps RPG. Or tactical RPG. Platform rouge like
Thanks for explaining the roguelike criteria. Knowing that helps a lot because I've been kicking around the idea for a roguelite game and because I don't enjoy turn-based combat, a real-time battle system is a must for me, but I wasn't sure if it qualified as a roguelike.
Now I know. 👍
Wow a very specific video that provided me the answer to the question I've been asking. Thanks for this.
Thanks for putting together this video. Always really wondered what it truly was.
I did hear people say “roguelike” and “roguelite” and I thought someone was just wrong. Good to know they are differentish
0:47 the 2 pictures are from de same person... someone noticed it?
The game that most resembles rouge to me is Pokémon mystery dungeon
Yup that’s a roguelike!
You did it! Good job
Ah yes my favorite game series.
Is torneko rougelike too?
I didn't even know that existed
like that type of video even if some of the information were knew by myself ^^ continu the great job
Nice! Thanks. Very helpful!
There is a relatively current game for PS4 called "Brutal", which is very similar to this, but features real-time action combat rather than turn-based. I highly recommend it. Very fun.
well I knew about them but didn't know if there are differences, guess this vid showed me that thanks olexa
Rougelikes are fun and rougelites are also fun
Thats all you need to know
No, because I like roguelikes, but I don't really like roguelites.
@@___------ why
@@user-lm7lv8dz8g roguelites are dumb fun and very simple. They keep me entertained for a bit but that's it. Roguelikes are much more complex and offer a lot of entertainment. If you can get past the shitty graphics or lack thereof, it's a whole treasure trove of content and gameplay.
I think this video was very necessary with so many games being similar
Clear explanation. Thanks!
You madman. You actually made the video
That's awesome. I'm designing a game in Python and you just made me realise that it falls under the 'roguelike' catagory. neat.
Yeah that's why I'm here. I described a game concept I'm working on to a friend and they told me it was a "roguelike" game and I was like "What is that?"
Roguelites like the Binding of Isaac and Enter the Gungeon honestly have a lot more in common with classic arcade maze games like Berzerk and Frenzy. Id argue the Binding of Isaac especially has similar gameplay to Berzerk - it even has a character in the DLC that mirrors Berzerk more closely, by having an enemy follow you throughout the entire game that can be taken advantage of to defeat enemies.
That is, when it comes to their shooting and movement mechanics, and random room generation. The different items and resources are something that was not present in those arcade games.
Great video thanks man
Chocobo's dungeon 2 and Chocobo's mystery dungeon, absolutely legendary games and it's interesting that it falls under the rougelike category
Great explaination 👏👏
came here to understand big picture behind Tainted Grail.
Turns out its nothing more than combat part of d&d.
Much appreciated vid
Thank you for getting the distinction where so many other videos on this topic fail
One thing I'd add is that it's probably worth taking some time to address a couple of modern Roguelike games that are on Steam at the moment: Caves of Qud, Cogmind, and Tangledeep. These three all do interesting and unique things with the Roguelike formula, and are well-worth looking into. They need all the attention they can get, really
Roguelike games are definitely still around just the latest trend has been roguelites. Great games though!
Olexa yeah, I still play a lot of Roguelikes, there a quite a few modern ones which are well worth looking into
This is actually a good question
Hey, great explanation of genre! But here is a question:
If you know game RoTMG is it a rougelike or gougelite or is it ROTGMlike?)
I believe it’s a roguelite, I dunno much about the game
@@OlexaYT I played that game on and off since 2012 or so. The game went trough ups and downs. Atm game is under a good team of dev. and management. If you would try it out right now would be great time to do it!
RoTMG is, as the devs defined it and as the game presents itself, a MMORPG bullet hell, so neither a Roguelike nor a Roguelite.
So if I've got this right the difference between a like and a lite is, turn based and top down vs real time in any perspective?
That’s a pretty large part of it but it’s more so “roguelike = all of the characteristics” “Roguelite = not all”
@@OlexaYT Thaank youp. This one has annoyed me for a while. Like seeing the actual rouge game too. So basic yet so genius.
Definitely a pioneer of the gaming industry!
Was so interesting, i didn't know from when roguelite existed. ^^
thank you olexa, very cool
i just heard the term for the first time today. my mind is blown. i may not have ever played one though, ive never played the binding of isaac or spelunky... many things you mention sound a bit like a dungeon crawler, permadeath aside.
hm. learn something every day. glad i looked it up. cheers.
Cheers! Check out The Binding of Isaac, Spelunky, and Enter the Gungeon. All excellent games
@@OlexaYT thanks for the recommendations
2:15 you can also do grid-based motion in the isometric style
Jupiter Hell!
Its finally come....... WHEEL OF ISAAC SPECIAL EPISODE!
I enjoyed this video! :)
Thank you sir
ahh finally I know what this genre is. I've been gaming sicne '86 but only the past few years have I seen an explosion in this genre. Not my type of gaming though.
It’s a very niche genre for sure. I love them due to the replayability factor of them but it isn’t for everyone
Wizards of Legend one? It’s what brought me here. I had never heard the term lol.
Oh, so that's what Metallic Child has going on
Honestly, I think you should make more informational videos like this, I’m not sure about what topics but I REALLY enjoyed this video. Maybe like some info/background of games or explain the differences of other genres that are similar? Idk but anyway, a fantastic idea for a video and you executed it perfectly :)
Thank you so much buddy! I love doing these kinds of videos and tutorial based stuff which is why In Depth Isaac and my Coding Tutorials are two of my favorite mini series
Olexa well do more! I’m sure a lot of the subs would love to watch more educational stuff :)
Nice video man
dragon mele im still waiting for pentahybrids hate comments
I like this type of video
Thank you for the clarification! I was interested in a space game called "Everspace" and reviews continually referred to it as a Rogue-like game...
...I thought they meant it was like the Rogue Squadron (Star Wars) games from the N64 / Gamecube. 😉
Thanks for this. So early JRPGs like phantasy zone, Hydlide etc are roguelike (top down, turn based combat, one life) nowadays people call game's that aren't anything like this, "roguelikes"!
Phantasy Zone was a side scrolling shooter. Hydlide had a fixed world and was neither grid based or turn based. Phantasy Zone is absolutely a roguelite, Hydlide is just an action RPG. Neither are roguelike.
Not sure you're familiar with the Danganronpa series, but I saw the fanart at the end of the video, and I gotta say, you should feel some strong emotions that someone decided to draw you based on a sprite of Nagito Komaeda. Have no idea what emotions, though.
Apparently I’ve played a Roguelike before-namely, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon.
Is kirby amazing mirrors roguelike or lite?
Its not grid so lite?
but a rouge-like is a game like rouge not a full 1-1 resemblance with retextures, i just don't see the point in the tag or term rouge-lite a lot of games take aspects from other games but aren't the same game, it's what makes a game unique the binding of Isaac meets like all the characteristics but turn based, not every souls-like has every game mechanic dark souls has, idk it's very confusing but great video.
I remember hearing that people didn't want games that were similar to Rogue, but another Rogue.
Spelunky looks like Rick Dangerous made with 2022 technology.
Very interesting!! So you're saying... Isaac is a roguelite, not a roguelike like I've been saying?? What have I become?? I've quickly been reduced to a slack-jawed yokel level of language mastery. I need to do some self reflection you guys.
At this point, the understanding of roguelike and roguelike is so clouded that we might as well drop the term roguelite and call them all roguelikes. That's what everyone does, anyway. It's more convenient, imo.
I go back and forth. Roguelike gets more clicks
A roguelike game means I would have to beat it without dying, correct? Even if I was seconds away from finishing it, if I died at that point, I'd have to start from the beginning?
@mehranmahdlou4375 Or everyone can just call an apple and apple and an orange and orange.
@OlexaYT That's exactly how it got diluted in the first place, developers and publishers using it to market their roguelites. Doesn't help that the words sound so similar.
Very interesting
A damn good game that's what it is
Power to yall that enjoy permadeath games. I’m too terrible and anxious 😂
Why did they only change ONE letter for two things that are very simmilar?
I mean they were going for the play on words. A roguelite is a lighter roguelike
why do I hear that chiming sound from Braid?
So what your saying is that trivia is a rougelike/rougelite?
Nah. No upgrades in trivia
Heat Signature IS a rouge-like
*cough* Pixel Dungeon *cough*
*cough cough* skillful pixel dungeon *cough cough*
coughcough dungreed
Krzys Bulski
Hold on there, I didn't even beat the third floor boss yet
Cough Shattered/Moonshine/Yet another/Sprouted/Your/Easy/Skillful/Un/Lovecraft/Unleashed/Remixed/Probably others I don't know about Dungeon Cough
The amulet of Yendor!
FTL for wheel adventure?
You’re great and ily
Kittsu Dren i would just like to say, good sir, that we need more people like you on this here internet. You, sir, are a hero. Thank you for using the correct youre
thanks now I know what it is
Here because of CirclesToons. I learned something new today.
Same bro 🤣
Would you consider the Darkest Dungeon a roguelike?
100% DD is a roguelite
This was a good video for me
I thought the binding of Isaac was a rouge-like not rouge-lite
Apparently it has a meta-progression system, making it a *-lite*
It seems like it would be easier to label non-Roguelike/lite games
Thanks! My GF and I was lost about the name.
It is a surprising you still comment to this day lad, we share this ability in common as not a lot of UA-camrs do this, also not sure if you like Roblox, but if you like rougelikes, play Deepwoken.
Not a roblox guy but good to see the genre reach there

Binding of Issac predates both FTL and Rogue Legacy so I'm curious why you said the latter revolutionised and paved way for the former when the opposite is true.
Isaac as a dungeon crawling roguelite paved the way for similar games like Enter the Gungeon. True roguelite nature was founded on games like FTL and Rogue Legacy. But the original Isaac is definitely a pioneer in the industry as well
Roguelike rolls off the tongue and is easier to say. :)
How/where can I play “Rogue” ?
Newer versions of the game are probably available but i personally recommend playing nethack instead of rogue
"And soon the long-awaited release of Spelunky 2".....
Lol happy 2020 y'all
F's in the chat
Thank you so much for this I love them I just don't like permadeath
Check out games like Hades, Rogue Legacy, and Dungreed. You’ll likely enjoy that style more
@@OlexaYT hey thanks a ton I have been keeping an eye on Hades and I'm going to give it a try on my switch I have rogue legacy but it kind of soured me on the fact that it said it was local co-op and it wasn't but I think I'm going to give it another shot I like the whole descendants idea
Hopefully people now get it right.
Watched a few videos and still dont know what is the difference....
pokemon mystery dungeon is a roguelike?
So its exactly like Pokemon mystery red dungeon. I get it now
Yup, that is a roguelike
My favorite roguelike is Tetris
We just gonna ignore the fact that the dudes at 0:46 have the same face?
Well now I know what Pixel Dungeon really is...
wait theres gunna be a splunky 2
Yessir. Should come either late this year or next year probably
i have been noticed
FTL and Rogue Legacy made way for The Binding of Isaac? The original TBoF is older than both of them..
So is “Returnal” a Roguelite?
Yes. Well known now as the first AAA roguelite
What about until you fall, it's not top down
Jesus im brain ded now
So you're saying that civ 5 is a rougelike? Then i have a fav rouglike game!
Never thought of that before! But yeah it may actually be a roguelike, you could argue that
Most people mistake "Rougelike elements" for "Rougelike". Good video
judging by those rules there are like 2 rougelikes that are actually rougelikes
There’s a LOT more than you think. It’s just modern “roguelikes” are all Roguelites. There aren’t a lot of roguelikes anymore
@@OlexaYT well now that i think about it the reason it's called rougelike IS because it's like rouge to a T pretty much, so there isn't many mainstream because they're mostly something people have seen before
also of all the comments from me you reply to this one
Clearly never said something worth replying to ;)
Like when everyone says Soulslike for every game made after 2011!
So...
It's all about permadeath then?
And the game being tuff.
Permadeath is basically the #1 thing
@@OlexaYTso battleroyale game is roguelite?
So...what is roguelike ?
My brother in Christ just watch the video
I don't get the appeal.
Also are Bloodborne's rng Chalic Dungeons rogue-like in a way?
Edit: not really it seems
The appeal is they’re massively replayable while still offering a unique experience each time.
Tell me this is elona a roguelike?
I do no know of the game so it’s difficult for me to answer
@@OlexaYT curses i guess i will never know some say it is others say its not .But if you do ever want to try it know it is free and easy to find.....just....you should know it gets odd like you can marry i think any npc you make a companion even non humans....anyone....so yeah odd i remember likeing the game before my pc dead amd lost my save had i think only 30 hours but killed the mood you know.
What i still don't understand is how rougelites were not simply called action rougelikes. Similar to how rpgs became action rpgs with games like diablo that came out. Idk shrug.
Probably woulda been smarter but the distinction got made ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
So such games called roguelike ...why?O.O
Well Dungeon seige2 kinda similar, when i die, i respawn in the town, but i can use teleport to travel and retrieve my tombstone.
But along the way all the monsters will be reborn , so i need to start over , sometimes its boring but it helps to lvl up
call of dutys dmz is roguelike as well and dark and darker not sure why u left them out!!
Because this video came out 5 years ago before either of those games existed
I glad killer bean the game isn’t as fitting to roguelikes as I thought because I don’t like roguelikes very much
Here because of Returnal
Hell yeah that is indeed a roguelite
the more you know
