great video, there's something incredibly addictive about rogue-likes
Amazing video! You deserve more views! Would love to see more from you :)
My man. My man you are a gem in a coal mine. I can't believe this is the first video I clicked on after my search. Thank you for so many links and that massive list of roguelikes.
you def deserve more views, this is top notch stuff!! subscribed
Very informative video thanks so much this is exactly what I was looking for!!
I've known roguelikes since I was 5 watching my sister playing Castle of the Winds. Seeing these games and playing Jupiter Hell recently sort of triggered a sense of nostalgia maybe? For something I wasn't even aware I've known since way back
This video was in my recommend and I don't think I've ever seen another video with such a low view count be recommended to me by youtube's algorithms. Anyway good video. It was informative and well made, and you covered the topic well.
Quality stuff buddy!
Agreed. This needs more views
VR has its own Rogue-Lite in the title Until You Fall. Great sword combat.
Liked and shared, great video.
Thanks for that torrent dude!
great video
Damn, what an AWESOME video. Grats man.
Great video! I would add Brogue as a gateway to more traditional roguelikes!
This is a nice informative video, and I’m glad UA-cam recommended to me. What interests me most is the fact that I’ve never heard anyone talk about the definition being cut down, as you mentioned. Everyone else still likes to reference the Berlin Interpretation, from what I’ve seen online.
I recently got into roguelike with Tangledeep last July, after having played a few roguelites over the years, and I have to say that I think it did an outstanding job of bringing an older genre into a modern setting. While I probably won’t be able to get into a lot of the older titles, due to the fact that many feel quite confusing and a bit archaic in design, I am keeping an eye out for the new ones that follow in that same style as Tangledeep. It seems like Stoneshard will be the next game on that list, from the 18 hours I’ve invested; once it’s more developed, I see it being a real great game.
You'd be surprised just how modern-feeling some of the older roguelikes are. A lot of them are updated to this day! If you can overcome the visuals they offer some very deep gameplay. Check out Cogmind or Cave of Qud if you want to acclimate yourself to the ASCII artstyle without jumping headfirst
Quality content
10:33 Very true. The entire genre is like an academics dream! XD
What's the game at 7:25?
I'd love to see more videos about Roguelikes. I love them.
Mystery Dungeon games are an interesting topic, in a way they're much more faithful to being like Rogue(down to some very specific things like how wall corners work) than most western roguelikes(Brogue being the only expection I'm aware of) which instead of looking at Rogue as it was seem to have been more concerned with what it was trying to be and fixed "issues" like having only strength attribute and no meaningful character creation.
Of the non-standard rogue-lites "Noita" is my recent favorite! Also "Variables Tower Defense". Back to ancient Mac OS, I will mention "Dungeons of Doom".
Love all these roguelike videos that mostly talk about roguelites.
nice vid
Its a nice video, strange, that it has only less than 10k views
Im a fan of roguelite, though :)
Tangledeep has now been out of early-access for a while, it's a classic.
Wheres the next video?
What about Toejam and Earl? Does that fall into any of the rogue categories?
8:31 nice games
Technically, that was a tile version of Rogue, not a curses version.
HOW'D YOU KNOW I'VE BEEN PLAYING BOTH ISAAC AND FTL?!?!
What’s the game on screen at 7:22?
What is the “brawler” at 6:30?
Is your name a play on Grudjieff?
What are the name of the game that appear in 06:46 ?
Monolith!
Great video and history. I wish there were overlays or a list of the games as a few of them zipped by quickly and I couldn't figure out what they were.
Don't forget about dragon crystal for the Sega master system. A truly unforgiving roguelike that was developed by Sega themselves.
What's the game showing starting @8:45 ? The one right after Sproggy
Hacque, I believe!
@@gefjeff720 Thanks. I couldn't tell how to spell it. I thought you were referring to the original Hack except that you grouped it in with modern traditional roguelikes.
@7:55 what game is that :o
Tangledeep!
If I'm being honest I understand v little about this...but what a good quality video
Still watching this in 2023
First
Roguelikes are games like Rogue, aka clones.
What are the games shown in this video. I am especially interested in 8:46 and 10:44
Haque and Gonner! Check them both out, Gonner is actually getting a sequel pretty soon too
Great script, I feel you should slow down a little bit while reading it. It sounds more like your speed reading a script instead of talking to an audience. Good video though.
Wow. There are a lot of games in this video that are not roguelikes.
..and if you never want to play another RL again, start playing CDDA.
"Roguelike" games are _'becoming more popular'_ because people will call anything roguelike.
Procedurally generate a map? Roguelike...
I think the turn based requirement should also be removed.
Roguelikes are any game with procedural generation, permadeath, and whatnot, whereas roguelite has moderate upgrades between runs, i.e hades/deadcells etc. Issac is a pure and true roguelike, same with games like noita.
That seems the be the new definition used by many, I feel restricting "true" roguelikes to being turn based is archaic as the ascii graphics requirement of old.
It can be simplified even further I say, if the only permanent upgrade between runs is the expanding of your own knowledge of the game and mechanics, then it is a rogueLIKE, and if there are other, actual upgrades, it is a rogueLITE, for example being able to start a run with a bit more gold, or extra health, or being able to filter down some of the randomized items, or giving you a higher chance to get one you like at the start.
Turn-based is one of the most important aspects of the definition.
You can have a roguelike with no procedural generation lack of it doesn't meaningfully change the gameplay.
Permadeath also doesn't make a roguelike often there's a setting to disable it and which setting you've selected can go entirely unnoticed.
Games like Hades and Isaac would be better served by calling them arcade games.
So if it is not turn-based, it is not rogue-like according to the most recent definition?
Yeah, pretty much. Anything that'd be real-time would be categorized as a Rogue-Lite by the new definition
If it's not a turn based, grid based strategy RPG with permadeath and procedural generation it's not a roguelike. That's not the "most recent definition" that's what makes a game play *"like rogue"* it's always been that way, and it's just that we had a bit of a flash in the pan with people calling anything a roguelike. That flash is dying out now though.
@@gefjeff720 It's not a new definition, it's going back to the old one.
@@joefadda578 So true. To hell with the new definition or popular definition. If it doesn't resemble Rogue its not a Rogue like period.
@@00O3O1B but it end up very confusing and that also not help anyone. its make the genre just mean anything which destroy the point of having a genre in the first place
Gta5 is rouglike
I want more real roguelikes not "roguelikes" like binding of isaac
Check out Jupiter Hell, it's by the DoomRL team and is great
@@gefjeff720 sounds great already, thanks for the recommendation. I liked DoomRL a lot.
@@gefjeff720 by the way, your videos are great. They got me into a lot of great games that I haven't even heard of before your videos.
@@RPGFanGirl64 That's great to hear!
