- From an early age, kids understand both simple and complex ideas of gender identity. They learn and absorb the categories we teach them, and then eventually find their place within, or beyond, these categories. The surprising truth is that we all know who we are from a very young age, including the truest expressions of our gender identity, and we then spend most of our lives searching for the words, tools, safety, and agency to share ourselves with the world. In recent years, we have seen more transgender and gender diverse kids exploring new words and models to describe their identities. In this talk, you'll hear about this gender evolution, including how to talk to and support the young kids and teenagers in our lives, as they lead the way toward a more expansive and inclusive future.

Dr. Angela Kade Goepferd (she/they) is the Chief Education Officer for Children's Minnesota, the Medical Director for the Gender Health Program, and also sees patients in the Children's Minneapolis Primary Care Clinic. Throughout their career, Dr. Goepferd has worked with and advocated for transgender and gender non-conforming youth and provide health professional training for pediatricians and clinic staff, social workers, school nurses and others to improve their skills and comfort working with LGBTQ patients and families. I’m 67. NB. I was bullied from the age of 6(actively) until 13; after that, passively.
For what? Gender nonconformity. I was ‘inspected’ by the girls in my 8th grade graduation class on the evening of the graduation, to make sure I wasn’t going to embarrass them. & I had at least shaved my legs….That really hurt. Still does. That was in 1969.
When asked if I was a boy or a girl, I’d say I was a tomboy, cause that was the only other choice I was given. (& the fervent hope I’d grow out of it) . Never did. Still an un reformed TOMBOY. & that means whatever I want!
Sorry but get over your insecurity, it’s called life and everyone has trama, playing a victim won’t accomplish anything. I was abused as a child, but I knew I wasn’t going to let it determine anything in my life. Kids need to be left alone until they are old enough to determine what they feel and want. Three and four year olds as this so called doctor says, do not have the mental development to know what they totally feel. They are more worried about coloring inside the lines. Did you know what you wanted at three years old? This doctors personal feelings have unfortunately put her on a path of ignorance

Growing up, I was always wrapped in fantasy and never let people see me. When questioned, I lied, and I lied very well. I was afraid of who I was getting out and getting stomped on. To be real and to be me was danger... how telling that danger and anger are so similar. I pretended to be all the things other people said they wanted people like me, in my time and place, to be. And it wasn't until someone told me in deeds that she loved me and it didn't matter and that she would be true to me and I could be true to me, too that I began to understand really what love is.
I didnt have that language necessary, but ive known for a long time. I will not let this generation struggle through that like we all did.
The internet is creating another Gutenberg communication revolution. Ideas are spreading faster than society can adjust to. I think if we all try to remain open to the fact their are many views people have on things like gender and approach from a position of curiosity, empathy and respect the humanity will advance forward and reach its full potential
except that the tools are build from a religions sectarian perspective, which will not live long enough.
The problem is that the majority view is being repressed.

I don't understand why some of these people seem to think that children are capable of understanding the nuances of gender identity. Asking a child to explain something they don't understand is hardly what I'd consider a supportive metric for the trans community.
I keep hearing them say that there is all of this conclusive research to back it up and that the entire medical community accepts this as fact now. I'm still trying to find any evidence of that.
No one is asking them what them what gender they think they are. It is about being open when a child expresses them self in a way that is 'different' than societal norm. No one is jumping from oh you want to wear a dress as a 'boy' let's go get surgery. I also don't believe I heard anything about expecting a child to explain anything. Children are honest, open and curious. It is about not shutting them down because as the grown up it makes us feel uncomfortable or it not allowed because of unwritten rules that we have all grown up with.
girls can do almost ≈whatever they want. they can be as feminine as a princess and as manly as a lumberjack, but the moment a man uses the littlest bit of nail polish or is the slightest bit nervous or effeminate, the whole world’s having a fit about it!

I started this video with a curious and open mind.
Four minutes in and hearing Moppa state that a THREE year old knows when, the way that they feel inside does not meet up with other people's expectations of them. Well, I found it a bit of a stretch to say the least. It's difficult (and alarming when hearing it from a medical professional) to take a person seriously when they think that this is what actually goes through the mind of a 3 year old baby!
remember, affirming a child's gender identity doesn't mean they get top/bottom surgery or even any hormonal replacement, it's just allowing the kid to be expressive and see what's comfortable for them over time, you know?

My now son was ask that question "are you a boy or girl" all through elementary school. He started his transition period in his early 20s. He's 32 now. But everything you've explained is exactly what he did. I wish I knew when he was young what was really going on. But GID wasn't even known back then. Thank you for sharing this. My own boys experienced something like this when they had negative comments made about their unicorn pants they wore to daycare. They still choose not to wear them because of how they were treated (the daycare did their best to handle the situation and it sounds like they gave a similar talk about how some people like different things and there is nothing wrong with what you like).
No they choose not to wear them because they are boys. Parents like you have completely dropped the ball in protecting our children from being sexualized. There are no doubt many many children who have been coerced and coached into non traditional gender rolls, having ideas pushed in their head at ages when they are completely vulnerable

Nobody is forcing an identity on anyone. It's completely okay for people to be the gender they were given at birth. Nobody is trying to change them if that's who they are. People are only trying to expand the children's knowledge so that they know about and understand people who's gender identity does not align with the one they were given at birth. The person in the video happens to have 3 boys who were assigned male at birth, which is a good example. I hope you understand better now.

Dr. Goepford thank you for making a difficult topic relatable. I hope your talk helps families and friends of gender-diverse kids understand how important it is to look within themselves and do the work to support and love these kids. I love the Leslie Feinberg quote "My right to be me is tied with 1000 threads to your right to be you." We're all in this together!

The voice inside me tells me that I should not pro-create because I have big box of crayons, so I will be beautiful, provide an ever lasting memory, but unfortunately I will cease to exist.
This is so beautiful as I sit in the car waiting for my 17 year old grandchild who identified as male until recently visit a therapist for gender identity issues. He is actually wearing girls clothes today which gives me a lot of anxiety only because I am so worried about how others will accept it because I love her/him regardless if he identifies as male or female. It makes me so sad that he was admitted to the hospital for 5 days for depression and put on medication just because he feels different. I pray that society gives him the space to be whatever he/she decides to be. The world needs to become a kinder place overall and it begins with the adults. Thank you for the reminder.

Could you explain to me why this speech is delusional and depressing? Among many experts in biology and psychology, it is generally agreed upon that gender identity is socially constructed. Even without experts, you can see that society has defined what makes someone of any gender. Gender is a social construct, but the genitalia you are born with is not. However, genitalia constantly hidden under clothes does not imply gender identity, and genitalia can be changed.

I agree wholeheartedly. I was raised extremely conservative, so I didn’t think I’d be able to accept, understand or empathize, but I do know that if we reject them as so many do it just causes further confusion, depression and even retaliation in some cases to dig in. I chose to live and let live and I can even understand how many cannot understand or accept it, but what I cannot understand is the judgment and hatred towards another human that doesn’t align with your beliefs. It’s tragic and sad.

I am seeing this pushed on my grandchildren in school. They leave no room for her to be just a girl that likes to paint her nails and climb trees. At school she must choose an non binary gender. She said to make them happy she choose the name Elliot and asked me if that was a boys or girls name. She is 8 years old.

But brains don't develop in a vacuum, outside of social expectations and norms. It's not as if biology would be the same, untampered by the environment. And the environment is always changing. Always has been. You wouldn't want to have many of your ideas and wake up in the 16th century.
Oh no that's not true - look here's a highly trained doctor saying soda pop, ice cream and candy floss for all. Listen to the child. Sorry - WRONG. It is a parents role to orient a child and to lead them in their understanding of the world. That doesnt mean a parent is totally free in that responsibility and here we have a prime example of a parent that might be showing they lack responsibility and may be incapable of parenting. When they decide that orientation means trying to consciously put a child on a path to medicalization - it seems they have failed. Does it make any sense to encourage social transition?
Nobody cares if you identify as something different. Just don't try to make the world acknowledge and validate you for it. But the classroom is not a place to talk about these things. It's for the parents.
It's a hard thing to not be cisgender. To not be accepted is a pain that nobody wants to feel. People who identify differently aren't asking for you to care a whole lot. Just enough to understand and accept them. To realize that you have a different gender than that given to you at birth is a struggle. It's confusing and frustrating. But it can also be wonderfully exciting when you finally figure yourself out and others accept you. It's a longing sort of anxiety to not be accepted and to be misgendered/mispronouned. It's a sharp anxiety every single time. It really hurts, and they wish they weren't different. But they are, and they have to learn to accept themself for who they are, in hopes that others will one day accept them. Are you telling people that they should just hide in the shadows? That they don't deserve to be acknowledged and accepted? It can cause depression and anxiety to not be, and to feel like you shouldn't exist, like you don't matter. It's a painful, painful thing.
I hope I've been helpful to change your outlook on people of different genders than those of there's given at birth. It can be hard to understand sometimes, but it's really best that we as humans are good to one another.

I identify as genderfluid and ppl always try to invalidate me, cause I’ve only recently come to terms with it, but I also only recently learned it was an option, but as soon as I understood there was more I knew exactly how I felt and learning about gender fluidity I just knew immediately that it made more sense for me.

You're right, it's difficult to have a healthy respectful debate, but how is encouraging non-binary gender identities bad? They are not forcing anyone to do it, they are just saying that it is an option and they took that option. Keeping them in the dark isn't being supportive. And you specifically calling out people calling this idea transphobes for not having a critical discussion when people in this comment thread are being extremely transphobic from the idea of it in the first place. You can't really say that and call yourself "pro-lgbtq" it's the same as when JK rowling says she supports the trans community and has trans friends and then says the most transphobic stuff.

This has gone too far. Leave the children only. This push to include all under the guise of diversity has left out boys and girls. Impressionable children are subjected to this as young as kindergarten and want to feel special, all the attention to this type of labelling is not healthy.
Boys and girls are not being left out. If the reason you think they are being left out is because those genders weren't thoroughly explained in this video, then there's really no reason. That wasn't the focus of this video. Expecting them to be talked about in a video specifically about genders OTHER than cisgender male and female, that's just like thinking someone's going to talk about chickens when they told you they're gonna talk about cows (unrelated to gender, but just a comparison). The ones left out are the ones who aren't cisgender. Anyone who doesn't align with the gender they were assigned at birth. Cisgender boys and girls are treated normally about their gender. Nobody is forcing them to change or trying to make them be someone they're not, because that's who they are. People are solely trying to expand children's understanding at a young age so that they are able to know that not everyone is simply a boy or a girl. But those who aren't cisgender and don't align with their gender assigned at birth are treated differently and misunderstood by a lot of people. Nobody deserves to be left out, weather that be that you're a boy, a girl, or anything else.

They don't need a biased opinion they need a balanced opinion so they can decide what's right for them as an individual verses one side or the other based on facts and logic but not distorted facts but others don't need to agree with them they need to form there own opinion without bias so they also need to look at people besides these people. Because it's not just about feelings. They don't acknowledge the facts.

I agree with allowing children to choose what to wear or play so long as both are available. Not just dresses for boys…and not just building toys or fire fighter dress up for girls, just to teach them they can be any gender.

Children do not have the right to choose their religion, what they eat, how they dress, what zip code they live in, what school they attend, who their friends are, etc. Parents are LEGALLY responsible to protect their children even if from themselves. Failing to do so is called neglect. The notion that children have the right to self-expression is utter nonsense. Perhaps a parents should nurture their child’s self-expression. However, the moment the courts rule that a child has any of these rights (against the parent’s discretion) while the parent is still legally and financially responsible to look after and provide for the child, will be the moment people stop having children.
