This video took weeks to plan and make. Excited to finally show it to you! It turned out even better than I expected. Please let me know what you think of the new ad integration. I tried to find a happy medium for me, the brand, but most importantly; you, the viewer. Let me know if I've succeeded or what I need to work to improve. Stay snazzy!
I think that the ad integration is very well done. Not too obtrusive, yet informative and in-depth enough for me to be interested in the product. 10/10
I thought the ad was perfectly fine. It wasn't too long and it showed off the features without gushing over the product. It made me want to actually try it even though I already use LastPass.
Some of us system builders just prefer sleek hardware and the OSX platform! I still build PCs, but I switched to Mac for my primary computer in '07 because Apple under Steve Jobs was pure magic. Back then, you could also customize and mod them much easier. Cook is leaving a bit to be desired in terms of value and innovation, though... :-(
SUPER cool video dude! I thought it would be awesome but this turned out even better. The geekbench score for your 7700k seems pretty normal to me? .. (My stock unit gives - 5782 / 20169)
Is that on your iMac? I admittedly don't have a loaded iMac on hand, so I a) went off of the "average benchmark score" for all of the 2017 fully-loaded 7700K iMac's tested on the GeekBench browser, and b) asked a viewer with a loaded iMac to do the test (he got 18,790). Your score is pretty good; about the same as mine. I don't know why the average is so low. Software related maybe? It isn't the RAM (because I yanked that and tested with the stock kit and was just under 20,000 (so not much slower)), and as you know, thermals in GeekBench don't get anywhere near the thermal throttling ceiling, so it's not that either. I'm flummoxed. LOL.
Buy it, it's worth it. I used it in my undergrad as a EEE in college and will probably use it forever. It'll be one of the best investment in your life, especially if you're going into any engineering field.
silicon lottery only comes into play when you start overclocking, the difference in score is almost certainly coming from there 3 factors. 1: the ram you got for this mod runs at a higher speed with better timings then the ram that apple uses. 2: the Polaris GPU you have will hit a slightly higher boost clock then the GPU that was used for the stock mac test. 3: the thermal paste you used on your new 7700k is better then the stuff apple uses by default and that allows you to hold max boost clock for more time.
pike RDM I️ wouldn’t be surprised if Apple bought Lower binned chips but they use the 7700 not 7700k the k has a higher base and boost even when non overclocked so I️ think that is why
The shocking thing here is that Apple wanted more than 1000 $ for an iMac model with worse performance. Then again, maybe it's not so shocking, considering it's Apple.
If I had $3000 and needed a new Mac I would probably do the same thing tbh. It should be much harder than just building a pc, just need to be careful with that display
5:37 The loaded 5K iMac 27" actually uses an i7 7700, not a 7700K. The K really just means it's good for overclocking, but macOS has quite limited overclocking ability, it doesn't matter.
Great video, Snazzy Labs! If you're only adding a secondary drive (no CPU upgrade), you can do it without removing any circuit boards. I used this video to add drive to a late 2015 27” Retina 5K iMac (Skylake i7 4.0 GHz), with only 256GB flash SSD factory-installed. The drive-only shopping list is: drive bay adapter, OWC heat sensor (which came with monitor adhesive), SATA data/power cable, and ifixit pizza knife. You only need to remove the left speaker and fan to access the motherboard SATA data and power connections. Reach underneath the edge of the board, and press in the cable connectors (use a small mirror). Route the cable behind the fan mount stands, to the new drive. You may need to loosen and move the right speaker to access the bay mounting screws unless you have tiny-trump hands.
Indeed, but seeing how just opening the damn thing in the first place is such a hassle (and a one-time operation, unless you're willing to waste sticker sets), isn't it wiser to just gut the entire thing and swap as many internal components as necessary and possible? Plus, Apple's thermal paste application (and quality) is usually crap (as you can see from the video; it's spread all over the place, even outside of the copper part of the heatsink, and extremely dry even when new); even if you weren't swapping the CPU, replacing said paste whenever you have the chance is just good practice.
Apple after watching this video be like, Oh you SOB we will make our next iMac much slimmer and CPU soldered to motherboard, RAM soldered to motherboard and then sit there waiting for your video.
Nope, but the extra could be spent on eGPU case and a quiet overclocked AIO cooled 1080Ti to bring the performance at native resolution from 0 to Average.
I did this recently to my 2012 iMac. My hard drive died so I decided to switch it with a SSD and upgrade the CPU. I didn’t grab the OWC cable but haven’t had any issues with my fan. Great video!
Hands down my favorite tech channel. No clickbait, well edited, quality content. This is the only channel I actually watch all the ads for. Stay Snazzy!
nitrowad Came here to say that. Apple is notorious for using cheap thermal paste that dries out and kills the GPUs. I rebuilt an Air, and adding Arctic Silver made a big difference. Fan never runs past 50%.
You’ve actually inspired me with this video. This will be cheaper then a Mac Pro setup but still very fast. And with that little wheel it’s not as hard to take apart as I thought..
They use the 7700 in the base high-end configuration, but they use the 7700K in the loaded configuration. With Kaby Lake, the K variant is clocked 700 MHz higher even without OC, so Apple just runs the unlocked CPU at base-clock.
Snazzy Labs is it possible that Apple use some terrible thermal paste which makes the temperature so high so it throttles and lead to some performance decrease
"Removing this part can cause serious bodily harm, or even death!! But don't worry, just touch the edges and you'll be fine".... Haha,, ok,, that's a no for me.
if you're scared, unplug the thing from the socket it and then hold the power button pressed for 10 second before even starting to open the monitor frame. that should discharge any remaining power on capacitors
Depends on if you want a 1080p worth having, guys. Sure, they are cheap, but the ones with accurate color/contras, pixel performance, and refresh rate can cost a decent amount.
Christian Stout I have a 1680x1050 monitor Still runs strong since 9 years 1080p 144Hz isn't a worth jump for me so i will keep my monitor 15 years or so until 2k / 4k 144Hz get affordable. That means mid grade gpu like a 1060 for 250 bucks should be good enough to Run a 300$ 1440p Monitor with 144 Hz So total 550$ for nearly ultra gaming 1440p 144hz. Today a 1070 alone is 400 $ And the monitor is 530 $ Thats overpriced as fuck
Badass Killer 60 Hz is bad for me The way more fluid motion of a 144Hz Panel is the future. If all I want would be 60Hz I would already have a 1440p display. But it sucks
i love the fact that he uses mac and not being a fanboy over it like most people but likes to compare it to the pc he build himself. literally the best mac channel. well done
It's really interesting to see how your accent has evolved since Bolivia. It didn't transform over night. There's still a tinge of Spanish Quinn here, even three years out. Edit: It just occurred to me that you might not like when people point these things out. Am I being an asshole?
This may be a stupid question but could that poor performance of Apple's top-of-the-line iMac possibly be due to the thermal paste/grease that Apple used?
That's quite feasible due to the turbo boost function being disabled if the CPU gets too hot. So better thermal paste might transfer heat more efficiently. Downside of this might be that the more heat the CPU is able to dump into the cooler, the less temp differential is available to cool the GPU, so you might find that the GPU throttles more quickly in workloads that stress GPU and CPU. I don't think that there are "runt" 7700K's given to Apple though. At or below their max turbo clock, they should all perform the same. The silicon lottery applies to anything above max turbo which won't be applicable here.
Is it possible that the maxed out iMac is that much slower because Apple throttles their hardware so it doesn't overheat? After all there is only the one fan. For example, a lot of phones have batteries that could be charged longer, but they have cutoffs to stop them from becoming dangerous and exploding (with the exception of that one phone *cough cough*)
One thought is, they want to at the top end ($5000+) for the maxed out iMac want to drive you to the iMac Pro which while still $5000 is cheaper and has more power.
Patrick Wilson With all that empty space inside the machine and the price they're charging for it, it's still the shittiest business practice I've ever heard.
Business practice has to do with sales and profit, they certainly make a lot of profit and have lots of loyal customers, so I would have to argue that they're doing something right there haha!
Do you think the new Coffee Lake 8700K (same LGA 1151 socket...but different chipset) that will be released in about week and half will work w/ the 2017 iMac?
snazy labs should try this, as new 2019 iMac are out with 9600 i5 units with same old specs its possible to upgrade old 2017 7600 i5 imac to new processor..
You created a great content this time, I can't really describe how much I loved this, the Idea, the concept and the way you presented. Just everything is completely beautiful in my opinion. Best 8 minutes I spend it on a youtube video for a while. Thank you 😊
about the display not running 5k on the LG thing I'm pretty sure that it's impossible to run 5k without thunderbolt 3 or hdmi 3.0 or whatever display port version it is so they couldn't run it at 5k on iMac
It's correct that you'd need DisplayPort 1.4. Mac Pro only has DisplayPort 1.3, but two 5K monitors from Dell and HP allow you to use two cables to get 5K. Apple and LG could have done it, but two cables to run one monitor is against Apple's design philosophy. LOL.
This is excellent. 15K likes and 595 trolls downvoting a free video from someone trying to help them for no reason at all. Great video. Kudos, and thank you.
Can you try upgrading 2017 7th gen cpu's to 8th or 9th gen cpu's as 2019 imac's are out with 9th gen cpu's without any changes so it could be easy swap and huge performance upgrade!.
Yatheesh Yashasvi I have the same question. I think the socket may have changed for the 9th gen. But maybe the 8700K would be possible, borrowing software compatibility from the 2019 iMac 21”.
Yeah ,and get the parts that are not broken into the new imac, and the price of part replacement if needed probably will cost less the to fix the computer even with warranty.
What temps are you getting with the 7700k? It's 95 watt vs. 65 watt for the 7700, which is what Apple uses for the i7 option on the iMac. It makes sense since the iMac is a closed-enclosure and you can't overclock on a Mac anyway, defeating the purpose of getting an unlocked 'K" processor.
Hi ! I have a fusion drive iMac, instead of replacing the hdd drive I would like to replace the ssd for an original and high Gb storage, my model is 5k 2015. What's the name of the original ssd that is sell with the iMac? Can I find it or have I got to find another brand ? Is it going to work perfectly ? Please help me :) Nice video
One correction that may or may not have been pointed out. Mac display resolution in the System Information window shows the logical resolution, not the actual resolution. Those Mac Pros are, indeed, running at 5k 5120x2880, with a logical retina 2x resolution of 2560x1440. So yes, they are running 5k on the UltraFine 5k displays. Just wanted to correct that for anyone that was confused. A retina Mac may say 1440p, but that's logical, not actual, resolution.
the graphics card he has (AM Radeon PRO 575) is comparable to GTX 780 (www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/2969/radeon-pro-575 benchmark scores) so i wouldn't say that even the 4,000$ machine can run crysis
Quite poorly at what resolution though? 5k? The GPU itself is not bad, but paired with a 5k display, it'll obviously struggle so would any equivalent GPU I would imagine. I'm sure that iMac is perfectly capable of running games at 1080p, which is still full HD.
It's not better, the CPU is prone to overheat in such small space with the mediocre cooling, Apple lower the clock speed probably to prevent this problem.
I bought the same computer and basically did the same thing. I had never seen this video until much later. I didnt go so far as to install the i7. Too scary. The reason I also did this was because the HDD in the iMac was WAY TOO slow and completely outdated when I purchased my 2017 iMac. The only reason I purchased this computer is because of the Retina screen. Still one of the best. Thanks for the video! Enjoyed it. Maybe one day Ill get around to installing the i7-7700k. But just installing a SSD made the computer MUCH faster and usable. Please keep the Vids coming. Two Thumbs up!
So, did you buy a fusion and replace it with the SSD-- or Apple's SSD, then... add another SSD? I don't understand why someone would even pay Apple's price for a small SSD, if they were just going to replace it with another third party SSD. Why not get a fusion drive then take that out? Isn't that cheaper?
Is really need to install an OWC thermal sensor? I heard this typical "problem" was fixed by Apple on 2015-current iMacs models. I had an iMac 5k 2015 and no needed thermal sensor to upgrade your HD (as a Fusion drive) to SSD and works as well, without "crazy cooler".
You can use a thunderbolt GPU enclosure such as a razer core. It requires some handy work in terminal (modding the OS) but it does work. Also Nvidia has recently released macOS drivers for the 10xx series cards. So that's an option to consider in the future.
6:18 this silicon lottery aply only if you OC, without it all 7700k run exactly the same... unless apple's default 7700k is real silicon lottery loss and it overheats as hell and underclock.
Is it worth skipping the other video card options on the higher Imac base: Radeon Pro 570 with 4GB of VRAM Mid: Radeon Pro 575 with 4GB of VRAM High: Radeon Pro 580 with 8GB of VRAM
If you watch any video about the 2017 iMac's you would understand, as explained in this video the 5K screen is almost impossible to buy elsewhere and if you can find it it's outrageously expensive, additionally the proprietary NVME SSD technology in these Mac's is some of the fastest you can currently buy- if you look into buying the same speed PCIe SSD for your Windows machine it is actually about $40 cheaper to get the upgrade from Apple than from a different company. Additionally, if you buy the base amount of ram and upgrade it yourself, which is allowed by apple through a port on the back, then you dont have to pay double the price for Apple's RAM. All in all it is almost impossible to mimic the exact specs of the iMac if you do those things mentioned above with a comparable PC including the price of the monitor. Sure, you could just not get a 5K screen and save boatloads of money, but that isn't the point of the apples to apples argument.
Are you suggesting that the PCIe SSD's that Apple sells with their iMac's are better than, say a Crucial SSD you could install separately? Is it worth losing your warranty to buy a base model with a fusion drive, then rip out the fusion drive and add a 1-2TB SSD for cheaper?
The reason your Core i7 7700K outperforms Apple's similar offering is the thermal paste you're using. It allows you to hold on to your Boost/Turbo clocks for a longer duration which can yield better results.
Different board is needed. There are some articles of people saying if you can program board bios your self and figure out the pin change/layout which is exactly the same but certain pins where converted to power distribution or changed to a different job. So if you knew what you where doing and spend 100 hours tinkering you may be able to get it to runing. In all honesty though it would be wasted effort 7700k is near the performance of 8700 minus core count
Hi, I have a question. Why did you buy the Boxed version? Wouldnt the tray version be suficient since you dont use the cooler that comes with the boxed version? I think it would be cheaper too.
I'm curious... how's the fan noise compared to the i5? It is known that the i7 does ramp up a lot faster then the i5. Is the noise difference any different? Thx
Your mic stops working after you do the bottom tape if you don’t be careful and cut an opening. And don’t press the bottom too hard at first. But you will want to secure the adhesive. Don’t want a $1000 accident.
that 8% bump may be from better thermal paste allowing better cooling and better boost speeds and or better/faster/lower latency ram. the Name brand stuff sometimes has better latency
I thought the logic board are the same on all emc3070 models, why did you have to buy the ssd upgrade, rather than just installing the one you purchased?
I did this with my 2014 27 iMac and was gonna shell out money for the OWC temp cable but I didn't need it! I pulled out the drive, purchased the new SSD (Samsung 860 Evo) and plugged it in to test. Surprising there was no jet noise from the fans and I tried some games and still no issues. I think the $40 OWC cable is a rip-off or at least only necessary for older iMac.s
Nice video! The difference in performance could be because you added a better thermal paste which allowed the CPU to run longer without being throttled or maybe run TB for a longer time.
You don't show actually installing the NVME SSD drive... I guess you just kept the default one? You didn't put one in the shopping list either, so this must be it. I see those are hard to come around. And pricey. And have many compatibility issues. Do you have any thoughts on this?
Could someone look into modifying more of it, other than just upgrading yourself? Like get rid of the speakers, upgrade fan system. Maybe add extra things.
so what would happen if you dropped the power supply? seems not worth all the risk involved... cant tell ya how many times ive fumbled small electronics . is there a way to handle it safely like rubber gloves/boots or something ?
If I had the skills and know-how, I’d follow your advice and upgrade a base 2017 iMac. It’s easy, right? Just follow the instructions, and in two hours, you have a machine that will last for years. Unfortunately, for most of us, your miracle upgrade would result in an SSD that doesn’t boot, and a fan that doesn’t quit, ever. Maybe I can invite you over for pizza and beer, and maybe you can do it for me? Ya’ think that’s a possibility? I’d put in a thumbs-up for your sponsor. Maybe you can make my request into a special remote video!!!
Hello Quinn. Could you find out if you can upgrade the CPU, RAM and Hard Drive of the new 21.5" and 27" iMacs, launched in 2019? If you could do a similar video like this one, it could be even better. Thanks!!
This is awesome. I just got an old iMac Pro from 2012. I'm seeing what mods I can do to it. All I'm using it for is music, not even video. Should be fun!

Snazzy Labs Ad int is great!
Yes indeed, great job on this video. I'm not even a huge Mac fan but I love seeing your tear-downs, hacks, and upgrades.
Snazzy Labs i think apple uses 7700 not the 7700k which would likely explain why your cpu performs better
I thought the ad was perfectly fine. It wasn't too long and it showed off the features without gushing over the product. It made me want to actually try it even though I already use LastPass.

Sometimes I watch people take apart and upgrade Apple products like this just for the thrill. One mistake and it is done forever. Exhilarating.
Once I got the screen off I was fine, but man... I was nervous with that heavy/fragile display. LOL.
you make the best Mac videos on UA-cam keep it up

i agree Quinn at its best
Mod/Tune I am PCPR (PC Peasant Race) and even I enjoy these Mac videos.
plus you can use the wheel as a pizza cutter once you are done with your iMac !
Indeed! A very, very tiny one. 😂

go to the apple store and load these kinda videos up on all their computers just to piss them off
Tried that and nobody gave a shit
Go to an Apple store with a hacintosh - that'll annoy them :)
Just AirDrop it 😂
or go to the apple store with some petrol and burn it down
Thanks doing this tommorow. Last week me and My buddies went and turned off every device in an Optus store
Why was there a gif of Linus dancing on the screen?
Linus is quite the pretty dancer.
Snazzy Labs try doing a colab with him, however good luck with transportation

Snazzy Labs I wish no.
Rigas Doddi they would solder it because it’s making the laptop thinner. Complain about the size. Thinner iMac= soldered on ram

Did you compare the thermals? Maybe Apple uses cheap thermal paste?
nitrowad I️ think Apple uses the 7700 not 7700k
actually it does intel bins the K's higher because they do over clock the differences small yes but there is one.
then why go with a K series cpu? that just doesn't make any sense to me other then the bragging rights that it has a 7700k
nitrowad Came here to say that. Apple is notorious for using cheap thermal paste that dries out and kills the GPUs. I rebuilt an Air, and adding Arctic Silver made a big difference. Fan never runs past 50%.
Now:
Apple: Hey Quinn, do you want to spend 5 grands for an iMac Pro
Quinn: YAS!!
You’ve actually inspired me with this video. This will be cheaper then a Mac Pro setup but still very fast. And with that little wheel it’s not as hard to take apart as I thought..
Apple use the 7700 not the 7700k which has higher clocks as well as overclocking :)
They use the 7700 in the base high-end configuration, but they use the 7700K in the loaded configuration. With Kaby Lake, the K variant is clocked 700 MHz higher even without OC, so Apple just runs the unlocked CPU at base-clock.
#kabylakegate
Snazzy Labs is it possible that Apple use some terrible thermal paste which makes the temperature so high so it throttles and lead to some performance decrease
Why would you overclock a CPU that's basically in a laptop? I think that's a big waste of money.
+Stephen _L_S Apple is known for shyte thermal paste and fans that prematurely wear out.

How can you die from touching it when it isn't hooked on electricity? (Serious question)
Is there still somehow a current?
All that had to be added was discharge the caps before handling this board. ;)
kifla420 makes sense. I was wondering too and never thought of capacitors.
if you're scared, unplug the thing from the socket it and then hold the power button pressed for 10 second before even starting to open the monitor frame. that should discharge any remaining power on capacitors
"Using that cheap 1440p monitor"
I can't even afford a 1080p one by myself... Wanna send me it? *LOL*
CDLLBOSS Lee I can have that
Depends on if you want a 1080p worth having, guys. Sure, they are cheap, but the ones with accurate color/contras, pixel performance, and refresh rate can cost a decent amount.
Get a job.
Christian Stout
I have a 1680x1050 monitor
Still runs strong since 9 years
1080p 144Hz isn't a worth jump for me so i will keep my monitor 15 years or so until 2k / 4k 144Hz get affordable. That means mid grade gpu like a 1060 for 250 bucks should be good enough to Run a 300$ 1440p Monitor with 144 Hz
So total 550$ for nearly ultra gaming 1440p 144hz.
Today a 1070 alone is 400 $
And the monitor is 530 $
Thats overpriced as fuck
Badass Killer 60 Hz is bad for me
The way more fluid motion of a 144Hz Panel is the future.
If all I want would be 60Hz
I would already have a 1440p display.
But it sucks
i love the fact that he uses mac and not being a fanboy over it like most people but likes to compare it to the pc he build himself. literally the best mac channel. well done
+McCallaghan Existed Cheers!
It's really interesting to see how your accent has evolved since Bolivia. It didn't transform over night. There's still a tinge of Spanish Quinn here, even three years out.
Edit: It just occurred to me that you might not like when people point these things out. Am I being an asshole?
That is interesting observation about Quinn, that's cool if you ask me.
Linus Dancing was Hilarious!
OH YEAH!
This may be a stupid question but could that poor performance of Apple's top-of-the-line iMac possibly be due to the thermal paste/grease that Apple used?
🤔
Reminds me, I need to reseat the thermal material on my MacBook Pro. lel.
Adam Saint someone in the comment mentioned apple using 7700 and not 7700k like he is
Is it possible that the maxed out iMac is that much slower because Apple throttles their hardware so it doesn't overheat? After all there is only the one fan.
For example, a lot of phones have batteries that could be charged longer, but they have cutoffs to stop them from becoming dangerous and exploding (with the exception of that one phone *cough cough*)
One thought is, they want to at the top end ($5000+) for the maxed out iMac want to drive you to the iMac Pro which while still $5000 is cheaper and has more power.
all the parts he replaced can be used in any pc. not the case.
My iPhone 6 blew up
My HP z820 hackintosh (bought refurbished for 990 euros) runs circles around this imac. It's also rock solid and completely functional.
Do you think the new Coffee Lake 8700K (same LGA 1151 socket...but different chipset) that will be released in about week and half will work w/ the 2017 iMac?
No, won't work.
snazy labs should try this, as new 2019 iMac are out with 9600 i5 units with same old specs its possible to upgrade old 2017 7600 i5 imac to new processor..
You created a great content this time, I can't really describe how much I loved this, the Idea, the concept and the way you presented. Just everything is completely beautiful in my opinion. Best 8 minutes I spend it on a youtube video for a while.
Thank you 😊
💙
BRB sending you my iMac to perform surgery on 🖥 - oh wait, I paid for top of the line everything except the RAM 😭😭😭
u got ripped off
about the display not running 5k on the LG thing I'm pretty sure that it's impossible to run 5k without thunderbolt 3 or hdmi 3.0 or whatever display port version it is so they couldn't run it at 5k on iMac
LOL.
Snazzy Labs oh my bad thanks for correcting me. I love the build
@@lux-pro even 9th gen i5 use same 1151 socket so physically its possible for 27' imac 8gb gpu.
No one knows exactly until someone takes risk!
Snazzy Labs be our hero!
You can actually set up a fusion drive with two SSDs, and it'll manage hot blocks better than a human!
Pfft, should be called the "Diymac"
That's the nickname I've chosen for it, but it's an SEO nightmare so I decided against it for the title/thumbnail. LOL.
It is true that you lose the warranty but you can buy another iMac for 1800$
+CRISTIAN SAVA Yep!
I would just put it back the way it came and take a chance
Yeah ,and get the parts that are not broken into the new imac, and the price of part replacement if needed probably will cost less the to fix the computer even with warranty.
Opening the machine does not void the warranty. This kind of misinformation is annoying at best
I do repairs for a living. How would that wheel work with opening iPads ? Would it speed it up at all or not really?
hey, you did the :O face!
(Liked the new ad integration, as well)
Sam T second that
Glad to hear it. Thanks for watching, guys!
You finally finished it
Indeed. The weeks of planning paid off. It's performing marvelously!
Snazzy Labs have a great day
Please help me :)
Nice video
They did everything they could to keep people from upgrading and you pulled a MacGuyver on 'em. I'm officially a fan!!!
But can it run crysis?
the graphics card he has (AM Radeon PRO 575) is comparable to GTX 780 (www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/2969/radeon-pro-575 benchmark scores) so i wouldn't say that even the 4,000$ machine can run crysis
Yes, but quite poorly.
Quite poorly at what resolution though? 5k? The GPU itself is not bad, but paired with a 5k display, it'll obviously struggle so would any equivalent GPU I would imagine. I'm sure that iMac is perfectly capable of running games at 1080p, which is still full HD.
No it's a mac. Can't do shit
8 Bit Paradise Learn before you speak OK.?
LOL😂 When Quinn builds better Macs then Apple!
The Master crapple dont bulid mac dumb shit foxcon bulid it you are stupid as fick that why apple love stupid people like you
Aleksandar be together not the same
Are you mad? lol.
It's not better, the CPU is prone to overheat in such small space with the mediocre cooling, Apple lower the clock speed probably to prevent this problem.
its not a lowered clock speed, its running at stock
new ad integration it's very good
I bought the same computer and basically did the same thing.
Quinn!
A perfect update to this amazing video would be an updated 6 core CPU like the i7 8700k!!!
Brandon Chapman *Motherboard
Does Apple support intel coffeelake?I thought they were still stuck on kabylake and skylake-x.
What a great youtuber!
:D
MIDO2802 *idiot youtuber
Wait! So if you buy an SSD config, there is room for another drive in the iMac?
Mark Davenport That's what I was asking me too!
Mark Davenport Yeah, there's room, but you need the cable and sensor, since it won't be in the machine if you buy an SSD.
Well I did install SATA SSD to my brand new iMac (alongside the NVMe 512GB SSD) at Apple's Authorized Service Provider and I did not loose warranty.
yes, but what will you do that you need these upgrades??
probably nobody really requires this amount of computer power.
OMG he is becoming smart.
How will you overclock on a not z series motherboard?
you cant
U w0t m8? The price difference today is 8$
no its not
U w0t m8? The K series is still clocked higher by default, has better quality and thus will turbo higher aswell.
UnknownPlayer their fit perfectly fit the word which is "MOTHERboard"
But you didn’t add dedicated graphics...😢
+Floyd Packard There is a dGPU inside, but no, I didn't add one externally. For reason! Lots of issues on the iMac so far.
Snazzy Labs gotcha! Can you add or replace a dGPU to an iMac internally? Is that even possible?
Not unless you swap out the entire motherboard. And guess what the most expensive part of the machine is? Yeah... :(
You can use a thunderbolt GPU enclosure such as a razer core. It requires some handy work in terminal (modding the OS) but it does work. Also Nvidia has recently released macOS drivers for the 10xx series cards. So that's an option to consider in the future.
Buy a pc
Quinn never fails to fill me up with his fun time Mac juice
6:18 this silicon lottery aply only if you OC, without it all 7700k run exactly the same... unless apple's default 7700k is real silicon lottery loss and it overheats as hell and underclock.
Woah tempting
+AppleMacsterRace lol your username.
instead of buying that $40 drive cable, just use ssd fan control! free app!
Lol It doesn't work it's a encrypted protocol and the app only works for the old version of osx actually like very old versions of osx
Is it worth skipping the other video card options on the higher Imac
base: Radeon Pro 570 with 4GB of VRAM
Mid: Radeon Pro 575 with 4GB of VRAM
High: Radeon Pro 580 with 8GB of VRAM
why would you ever buy an iMac?
edgy youtuber user I am tomorrow and will love it.
Sure, you could just not get a 5K screen and save boatloads of money, but that isn't the point of the apples to apples argument.
the difference between 4k and 5k are going to be small to non-existent
Are you suggesting that the PCIe SSD's that Apple sells with their iMac's are better than, say a Crucial SSD you could install separately? Is it worth losing your warranty to buy a base model with a fusion drive, then rip out the fusion drive and add a 1-2TB SSD for cheaper?
The reason your Core i7 7700K outperforms Apple's similar offering is the thermal paste you're using. It allows you to hold on to your Boost/Turbo clocks for a longer duration which can yield better results.
Hi I have a late 2013 iMac. Can I upgrade to the same specs? 64 RAM.
Loved the video Snazzy makes me want an iMac now lol
That's high praise from you. LOL. 💙
Is it possible to 2nd upgrade cpu to 8700k technically?
no
Different board is needed.
1stfloorguy Don't forget the imac's pityfull cooler could never cool down an 8700k at load so per core performance would suffer.
"but if you don't touch the death board wrong, you gucci."
Should have been called the "DiyMac"
i7-7700k?
They sell 8th-gens already lol
This was before the 8th gen
You don't need the sensor, don't waste your money. Check macrumors forums for details.
that 8% bump may be from better thermal paste allowing better cooling and better boost speeds and or better/faster/lower latency ram. the Name brand stuff sometimes has better latency
the truth they all run on 1440p
Can I use a Intel i7 8700K on this Imac?
Alberto Gandica no
Try
Junho Son no cuz the socket isint the same
The socket is the same but Intel decided not to support it, something about powerdeleivery they sayd
Cortex 8700k uses 1151-2 wich has a diffrrent pin layout
Now apple wants 1000 for a stand
*A STAND*
I thought the logic board are the same on all emc3070 models, why did you have to buy the ssd upgrade, rather than just installing the one you purchased?
I did this with my 2014 27 iMac and was gonna shell out money for the OWC temp cable but I didn't need it! I pulled out the drive, purchased the new SSD (Samsung 860 Evo) and plugged it in to test. Surprising there was no jet noise from the fans and I tried some games and still no issues. I think the $40 OWC cable is a rip-off or at least only necessary for older iMac.s
Interesting screw driver you are using. Can you link to place where you bought it.
Nice video! The difference in performance could be because you added a better thermal paste which allowed the CPU to run longer without being throttled or maybe run TB for a longer time.
you are literally the best kind of apple fan
Just got one of these in the shop, and had to deal with that adhesive crap. Think I may order that cutting wheel.
Don't need $40 cable for heat sensor, just install SSD Fan Control and it handles the fan speed automatically for you based on the system temp.
I now want to look at older iMacs and see if they can be upgraded also...
Really want to do this to my iMac, just not sure how hot it will get with a 7700k and I’m kinda scared of cracking my display 😔
so what would happen if you dropped the power supply? seems not worth all the risk involved... cant tell ya how many times ive fumbled small electronics . is there a way to handle it safely like rubber gloves/boots or something ?
Apples BTO upgrade prices are insane. It was a lot easier to do diy on the older macs
It's really not that complicated. I just helped a buddy if mine to upgrade his 8GB RAM too 32GB and HDD to an SSD.
You don't really need the expensive sensor if you get SSD Speed fan app that overrides the temperature sensor.
