Props to you for uploading a “failed” attempt at this project man. Other UA-camrs doing it successfully gives the layman the misconception that it’s really easy and a no-brainer to self-upgrade. Your video brings me back down to earth, so I appreciate you! Love your vids
I appreciate it! Yeah I would have preferred to obviously get the computer working, but I am not going to hide behind the fact that I messed up and broke it. Hopefully I save 1 or 2 iMac Pro's from the same fate as mine. Thank you for taking the time to watch!
I'm not entirely sure how the performance of each machine compares off the top of my head, but you might be better off getting an adapter board to turn the iMac screen into an external monitor and use it with a Mac Mini. If you strip the internals of the iMac and remove the Mac Mini from it's shell, you might be able to even fit it inside the iMac if you want to preserve the all-in-one aesthetic.
If the connector on the motherboard is broken It might be possible to replace it with some micro soldering (Louis Rossman is known for this in the us), but It might not be worth it, it might be expensive and it might not solve the issue. Same thing if there's an issue with the screen itself, I don't want to be pessimistic but overall I don't know if the repairs are worth it. These are just assumptions, everything might not be lost, something can maybe be done for cheap, idk. Sorry for that happening to you. It's as well on the other side, "cool" to see these types of videos, your channel seems very authentic and qualitative, glad I stumbled upon it!
you could convert the 5k into a monitor diy perks style and use the logic board to build a new computer, though that'll make you go down another rabbit hole. still, dont give up on upgrading!
I took a 2019 27 inch iMac and swapped the spinning main drive for a SSD, replaced the 128g SSD stick for one twice the size, and then somehow magically figured out who to run a script to create a fusion drive out of the two. In the process I blew out the power supply (it made a HUGE popping sound and knocked the power out of half my house) and cracked the screen. By the grace of God the exploding power supply didn't harm any other part of the innards; the computer still booted up when I replaced it. Regarding the cracked screen, I purchased a replacement, but I just don't have the patients to install it. It's been sitting in it's box for over three years now. Regarding my iMac, it works fine and you can barely see the crack in the screen when it's booted up. It's firmly Gorilla taped to the machine and handling its business. All that to say, upgrading an iMac is a fools errand!
As an engineer I’ve done hundreds of iMacs over the years with out problems dating back to the first one. But I’ll tell you what I won’t touch again! I cut open an iPad that wouldn’t power on and the battery exploded and the glass slit my wrist! They was blood spraying everywhere! And a trip to A&E for stitches and glue think I’d lost about a pint and a half of blood. All I did was scroll the corners with the pizza cutter and pull out the screen !! BOOOOOOM!
Hey dude, you're not alone in this, although I didn't break a imac pro, i did break a maxxed out 2015 retina 5k, I was repasting the cpu and my microfibre cloth landed on the socket with the pins and bent a bunch of them, after tediously bending them back, the system boots, and will install mac os, but once installed it hangs when booting into the system, i keep getting some kernal error, either way I have 3 others so i haven't had a chance or desire to tinker again. Do not get 2015 or earlier, they have issues with display ghosting as they age, my 2017 has also started showing signs. As you said, the later, the better. Also if you still have the mainboard and wanted to use it what you could do to continue using the internals of this computer if you really wanted, Opencore has an option for disabling firmware throttling caused by missing display etc, you may be able to use one of the thunderbolt outputs and then display input back into the card. Then you would have an imac pro with secondary display input! which I don't think anyone has done before
Thanks for posting this. I've got a 2017 8 core 128 GB iMac Pro that's powerful enough for everything I do. But I suspect it's full of dust and possibly the thermal paste has dried up, because it runs the fans way too much. It used to be practically silent even under moderate load. I'm tempted to open it up but afraid I'll break those screen connectors.
I opened my iMac Pro during the 2020 lockdowns to swap thermal pads and added a PTM7950 thermal pad for the CPU. After putting it back together, I noticed the camera wasn't working. When I opened it again, I realized I had mangled the camera cable, so I ordered a replacement. After installing the new cable, I sealed it up, but now the monitor wasn’t working. I assumed I must’ve damaged the monitor cable as well. When I opened it up again, I found that both cables were intact, which left me stumped. Living in Japan, I went to the only Apple-certified shop in my city. They said they'd do a "technical physical assessment," so I brought it in. The "assessment" turned out to be just turning it on and off, and then they handed me a $2,500 USD repair estimate. I was shocked and asked if they could send it to a technician first for a few hundred dollars instead, just to confirm if the logic board needed replacing. The board, CPU, and everything else were functioning; I just couldn't get the camera and monitor to display correctly, although the system still detected them. But they told me no-if they sent it out, I’d need to accept and pay the $2,500 USD. Feeling like the shop was trying to rip me off, I went home and reached out to Apple directly. I was met with more runaround than I'd ever experienced with their customer service, and ultimately got the same answer. I ended up using the computer with an external monitor for months until I found an independent Apple-certified repair shop. The "shop" was a single guy working from his apartment, but he assured me he could diagnose the board in a few days and identify the specific part causing the issue. Although he hadn't worked on iMac Pro hardware before, he said it wouldn’t be a problem. So, I dropped off the iMac Pro and waited. After a week and a half with no updates, I checked in, and he asked for another week. I didn't stress over it and took advantage of local travel discounts during the lockdown. But after a month of complete silence, I reached out again. This time, his tone changed, and he parroted the same things Apple had said. When I asked him what was wrong, his chin rose and he started acting like Japanese men when they feel you are below them refusing to acknowledge or answer any thing I said. I understand this game and spoke around it, he couldn’t tell me and became even more defensive. He eventually admitted he’d only done a visual inspection. I was stunned-that’s something I could've done myself and it was directly what we discussed I did, I do not need from him, and that he would be able to actually technically asses the board; ie capacitor/component assessment. Real tech work. I played along, doing round about questioning while very quickly looking inside the device, I realized the person faked his ability and wasn't worth the time, I payed like 80 USD and just left pissed he wasted my time/money with no new answers. When I got home, I opened up the iMac again under better lighting and realized he had mangled all the cables! The sudden attitude change he made more sense. I had taken detailed photos of the system before giving it to him, so I emailed him the before-and-after photos, but all I received in response a week, later was, i kid you not, "Legally, I signed a contract with him," nothing else, with no acknowledgment of anything in my email. I proceeded to grab a knife while researching how much time I should expect to spend doing a gaming to another. Headed out, have last meal, drink to much, come back, slide into the ofuro. Bight my lip, Let it go and order the new cables (160USD+shipping) trying not to think about the mess. They arrived, but the system still didn’t work. However, I noticed the power connector’s female port on the logicboard was slightly raised. I pushed it down, reconnected everything, and the monitor worked again-though the camera was still dead. I ordered yet another camera (about $150 USD), but it still doesn’t work to this day. I’ve since resealed the iMac Pro and have been using it fine (minus the camera). It’s been running great, even with multi-eGPU setups, like TB4x6900XT. The replacement CPU and vega64 VRM thermal pads worked out great. I have had lower temps, better dissipation so less fan noise triggering which I am happy about. Not being able to fix the camera though has driven me a little crazy. The repair situation to do so got me temper to wanting to Videogame someone levels. I think it might have something to do with how it connects to the T3 chip rather than the cable, connector, or camera itself. There’s no documentation anywhere that I can find, and I don’t know how to make the new camera pass the T3’s security check. I tried reinstalling and even a DFU reset with no luck. I’d still like to repair it or at least find an answer, but I don’t know where else to look. PS Videogame someone's a joke, for those who can't understand.
Apple definitely intentionally designed the internals to be fragile and un-serviceable so that upgrades are technically possible but greatly discouraged
reset PRAM and NVRAM ram, happened to me with similar repair, once reset the issue was fixed.. The connectors can take a good beating btw. Thats not your issue.. You havent reset the machine to register new hardware..
It’s okay Scott, you helped me consider my initial setup configuration for purchasing an iMac Pro to support my legacy software and hardware. I will be trying to find the configuration that I will not need to open. Sub’d
Good luck selling it for parts. I turned a perfectly working 2015 27" retina iMac into a 5K monitor using a third party driver board from AliExpress. The monitor works great, but I've had the old iMac logic board on ebay for almost a month now with no bites. I just dropped the price this week and no takers yet. I still have to list the RAM and speakers and fan assembly, but not holding out a lot of hope in recouping much.
I bought one of these, and yes it’s a fantastic deal. I picked mine up on eBay for 1400 with 14 core, and was thinking of upgrading the RAM…but no, I’ll just enjoy it for what it is. Thanks for putting out this video. It’s a shame this thing is so finicky. I think the best route for anyone purchasing one of these is to pick one up as is and maybe hunt one down with upgrades already offered. You were right though, overall it’s a really nice setup. I’m really happy with it.
Excuse me... how did you break the cables? Did you do this intentionally or was it a freak accident? Because, being careful, I did scuff up some simple stickers in my iMac but nothing was damaged.
I Hope you bought an extended warranty. I just bought a pro and it will be here Tuesday. Rumor is it’s very difficult to upgrade the pro. Hopefully you can get it fixed. 😊thanks for sharing your experience
I’m hoping this iMac’s arc isn’t done. Need to see a redemption where the port is replaced and we get to see an ultimate iMac Pro! But, I think it’s totally understandable if that requires either extreme skill or is prohibitively expensive. Good luck-either way I’m glad I found your channel!

Sorry for your lost. I damage a few computers (not that expensive) in my experiments... es doloroso.
I broke five of these. You either smash the glass or you crack the corner or you damage a cable harness. I've repaired many iMac's successfully, but each one is a bit like disarming an IED; I see people on the internet just yanking stuff out of these computers like it's a fucking old truck. The only thing now for this computer is to sell it for parts. The second option would be shipping off your board to Lewis Rossman if he still doing that, and have him change out those cable harnesses by desoldering them. I always just buy another logic board and sell the broken one to people like Luis rossmann through eBay. Every man that enters the Colosseum of iMac repair will leave in pain.
I once ruined my Dell XPS notebook in a very unnecessary way, just to impatient, exited, wanted to see it's working before closing everything and a shorted something while testing and the XPS was dead forever. The only "good" thing was, it was a very disappointing "high-end device" from the beginning with a lot of QM issues and questionable design decisions by Dell.
If you only knew Louis Rossmann I'm sure he could probably help you. I'm sure when you get this iMac back up and running you'll be jumping for joy, in fact you'll be dunking; )
Louis Rossmann, dosdude, maybe some fb groups. buy another 5k board, maybe you can fit that in (not pro model), use it as an external display as luke miani did. or put a mac mini inside it. i dont know im just throwing ideas. i really like your videos btw. keep up! sorry for this imac accident :(
Do you enjoy torturing yourself Scott? It's an Apple product, they designed these thing to basically be not user serviceable. Just assume it's disposable tech and nothing is user replaceable, Apple thinks of their products like that and have been doing everything they can to make it reality. It's why I don't have any Apple computers and the only Apple products I own are disposable.

You must be tearing your hair out! :(
😂😂😂😂
A new 5k screen is $400, I mean. I would use a magnifying glass and look at the ports, maybe there is a piece of the old connector stuck in it.
This sounds like the start of of Linus Tech Tips saga with the iMac pro.
Nooo - really feel for you so much. Not many people share their 'failed' projects. Kudos - cool video concept despite the circumstances.

Great idea! I actually ordered a board off of eBay last night! This iMac isn't dead just yet! Well the internals are kind of toast
You are able to change the display cable on the lcd, they are replaceable, even if 1 pin is slightly bent, it will not work
If the connector on the motherboard is broken It might be possible to replace it with some micro soldering (Louis Rossman is known for this in the us), but It might not be worth it, it might be expensive and it might not solve the issue. Wow - backing down the plan to upgrade my 2017 Pro -
The quality of this video is amazing :)
Really appreciate it! Thank you for taking the time to watch! Next time I upgrade a computer, I promise not to break it haha
I love how the title is basically the opposite of the content. Stay as you are, I enjoy watching you ^^
😩😩 I tried so hard. I have 5 hours of footage of me doing this stupid upgrade. I hope it scares some people away haha
Scott, it's okay, at least you have your hair.
Btw you kinda made me curious, if im not overstepping, what do you do in your 9 to 5?
haha - its really just a basic office job, I work in sales support. Lots of email and meetings, I don't mind it, I work with some good people!

I broke my 2017 logic board 😂 bent cpu pins smh 🤦♂️
How much for that CPU? I will take it if the price is right!
Thats why you always gotta send it to the professionals. Yes it would be more expensive but at least you wouldn’t gamble on the device

I have that exact same computer. Yes it is a beautiful machine. I wish you luck
Maybe you can sell the parts to recoup some of your money.
Solder a new connector on to the motherboard

Are you not able to take/send it to an Apple Store and for them to tell you what’s wrong? This can’t be over so quickly 😭😭
Just buy one and use it. Don't mess around. You bought an 8-core, so be it.
I'll be waiting in 2025 to see if Apple releases a new one of these.
im so sorry for you...

Anyone knows opening a Mac is fun! Right? … Right?
This was awful, I will never touch an iMac so long as I live. Unless it’s to destroy it for the display haha
@@techno_eclipse happened to me with my old 2011 MBP, was a junior in high school and was too broke to buy a new display
It’s ok.
it's okay, I just did it too
Oh no!!!! Thats why I don't want to attempt to upgrade mine. Ill just take the 8 cores. These machines are too rare and too expensive..
agreed. It is such a shame, but hopefully this video serves as a warning to others
