    NOTE: at 3:01, that's the 10-core upgrade price not 18-core. That's a 4AM error.

      Snazzy Labs kinda unfair to include $130 in mouse and keyboard in the imac pro comparable build when a $20 biglots mouse keyboard combo is as good as the shitty ones apple gives you and if you want mechanical the redragon kumara is $30 and the logitech g300s gaming mouse is $20. And to be honest at that point id pay the extra $50 to use windows 10 and if you really want to work with mac os you get the option to dual boot.

      Having more ram is never overkill specially if your dealing with video and pdf files the more the better. Custom PC can be more expensive but one benefit to it is SLI, more power on PSU and better cooling.

    Yeah those "warranty void if removed" stickers are actually illegal in the USA via the Right to Repair laws so rip those things right off and tell Apple to talk to the FTC if they say anything about it.

      Andrew Crews It might also be valid in countries with different repair legislation.

    • @Garbee
      @Garbee 6 років тому +10

      @Andrew Crews The warranty is *not* voided in this case. The act of opening a device (regardless of stickers) is not legally capable of voiding a warranty. This is what the written law states. It even says "Warrantors cannot require branded parts be used..." Meaning, you are free to modify the internal components as you wish and the warranty is still binding between the warrantor (company/provider) and consumer (purchasing entity.) The sticker is also not allowed to lie, the FTC sent out warnings about this since it is deceptive and suggests and illegal practice. You can lookup the "Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act" and read the official legal bill if any of this is confusing. Wikipedia has a fairly good summarization though of the most important bits in simpler language.

    • @Garbee
      @Garbee 5 років тому +4

      @Andrew Crews I did not misunderstand anything. I also directly responded to the "sticker is allowed to lie" in my post. "The sticker is also not allowed to lie, the FTC sent out warnings about this since it is deceptive and suggests and illegal practice."

    I am not surprised with Apple's way and choice of applying thermal paste. I work in Apple Certified Repair center and new 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro machines are all having GPU overheating problems after less than a year of use. And guess why? Thermalpaste. I applied Thermal Grizzly paste on my machine, but due to Apple Certification I am not allowed to apply a 3rd party paste to our clients. Here you go…

      @CommodoreFan64 6 років тому +3

      Mark Wolf If you are talking about hardware this powerful in a form factor like this then sure, but I don't know about anything thermal throttling, and melting down, as you can get some really good small form factor Intel i3/i5 Asus Chrome boxes that will handle the work loads of 80 - 90% of the planet who are not gamers, and/or content creators, that stay cool enough, and don't thermal throttle. Also look at phones I have a Moto G5 + with an Ocotocore CPU, and 4GB of ram that stays cool in my pocket all day long, and even after gaming on it with a heavy game like GTA, or even Fortnite(only tried it a few times to see if I like it, but not my thing) it barely gets warm. the only time I've had it get hotter then I like is when using the included turbo charger, which I rarely use.

      If all VRM phases turned on it could handle 18 cores, but if you running application that using less cores - for efficiency reasonable to turne some of them off, and that where we got problem with high mhz CPU. Also i belive 18 cores got less base frequency and less agressive boost.

    • @StopaskingformynameYouTube
      @StopaskingformynameYouTube 6 років тому +2

      If the VRM's don't handle a 300mhz upgrade then they are allready stretched pretty thin as is.
      VRM's should allways handle way more than what a processor can draw under extreme overclocking, because if one of them fail both mobo and gpu are dead instantly.
      Cooling is the main fault of vrm's, if they reach 120c they will wear out insanely fast.
      The vrm's on my old Gigabyte 990fxa UD3 was designed for 220w tdp yet i pushed them far beyond that for allmost 5 years before i upgraded to ryzen, they are still going strong but now at base clock on the cpu as it's being used as a mediacenter.

      @D-One 6 років тому +4

      Yes you should blur your serial. People can set up a Hackintosh with his serial number, or even change it on a real Mac. If too many different computers report the same serial things like iMessage, iCloud, etc can be blocked by Apple for obvious reasons. A normal person shouldn't worry much about it but a UA-camr should, lots of trolls on the webz... The price of fame i guess.

You win so little doing the CPU updates (the price on of the iMAC pros is reasonable, as time is not free) that is not as many as you will like. If Apple pulls this kind of pricing with the nex "modular" Mac Pro it's going to be a hit, if and only if they fix the rest of the line, or remove it.

    I feel the need to clarify something about the thermal interface material; there are many different kinds of thermal interface materials and all has pros and cons. What you found inside your mac is most probably silicone base + some mineral oil + metal oxide(s) and its on the less viscous side of the scale if you compare it with stg like mx-4. I know that usually the less viscous the tim is, the better it conducts heat but you cant simply apply mx-4 to something that isn't supposed to be serviced, like ever. Less viscosity means the stuff will creep out to the sides in time (and heat cycling will only help it creep out faster) thus decreasing the cooling performance, that's when you see differences between individual core temperatures get increased. Too much thermal paste wont kill you unless its really really too much, or electrically conductive, your mounting pressure is bad, or all of the above.
    Of all the things they have done with that "workstation" the only right thing was the thermal paste. That cooler has a critical flaw; there is no way to get rid of the dust it accumlates in time and believe me it will and you'll learn what tjmax really means.
    You dont cram a workstation cpu into that tight of a space with that simple of a cooler. You definitely don't do that with a cpu with 140 degrees centrigrate of TDP. I dont know what you replaced that "garbage" with but if you -God forbid- used something like mx-4 you will see a very pleasant decrease in temperatures immediately, but it'll all go to hell in 2-3 months. Trust me.

  • @OTechnology
    @OTechnology 6 років тому

    I'm pretty sure its heat. The TDP is just a guidline not a real life power rating. The reason the less than 18 core Xeon also has lower clocks is because they draw almost the same as the 18-core since they're clocked higher. So the reason for the B SKU is probably still heat and power. Lower bin chips aren't seperated by just a mere 300MHz.

    I do however disagree with your assessment that you can build a PC that can “smoke this thing”, full stop. The full spec of this, with an 18-core Xeon and Vega 64 (technically the Vega Frontier “64X” with 16 GB RAM, which was a measurable gain over the standard Vega 64) was more powerful than even some of the best PC builds of its time. The only way you could match the performance of this (let ALONE exceed it) would be if you spent LUDICROUS amounts of money… like as in, double the iMac Pro’s cost. And even then, you certainly weren’t leaving it in the dust or anything. In terms of raw performance it’s still a beast to this very day.

      Would not surprise me if they did, and they could do it via software, or their custom BIOS if they wanted too, or just go with a BGA package chip which are found in laptops, phones, gaming consoles, etc.. Also lets remember it's been rumored Apple is looking to replace Intel for their own CPU designs so they can do releases on their own schedule, and not when Intel decides to release a new product that fits their needs, and agrees to ship it too them.

      Given that this is the same x299 platform they're using for their servers and enthusiast desktops it's unlikely they would go with a BGA model. Others sure, you can buy lots of mitx and a few matx boards that have soldered CPUs complete with heatsinks for cheap.

    TDP does not necessarily say how much heat it produces. A difference in clock speed usually indicates a difference in Voltage which DOES determine the heat the CPU outputs. So yes. The lower clockspeed is most likely a heat issue. Of course testing will have the final word but that's what this looks like to me.

    The 10% performance improvement is completely down to the 10% higher clock speed. This also exposes that the 14-core iMacPro is running even slower clock speeds that the 10-core.
    I am also curious what the real price difference is between the W-2150B and the W-2155 considering that anything branded specifically for Mac is typically 20-30% higher priced. • @by010
    @by010 6 років тому +3

    So, i watched whole video, now can I comment why building PC seems better to me?
    So its not only about specs, and yeah, true, valuable thing in mac seems to be screen, you can still get full setup with higher raw performance, im not looking at wonky apple-only cpu's becouse I personally treat such thing as one huge anticustomer ripoff, but meh, whatever. Comparing raw juice per buck, you van comfortably have ~4000$ for 4k (or 5k? Whats that standard? Thats the trick, you cannot compare 4k to 5k, huh? Truth is, its 5k for this purpose. To make comparing harder. You wont tell me that its consumer friendly).
    Anyway, yeah, you can get some better raw juice per buck, but where is that awesome apple service?
    Well, that service is beeing lack of service. Their service is ripoff, when with your own build, you can easly upgrade, replace parts at will! And nobody will void your warranty (unless you overclock or delid or so) for your modifications. When you send your lets say GPU for warranty, you have whole machine still working, at your service, working on integrated gpu, or old gpu you had in drawer.
    Apple will charge you unreasonable prices for service, when its been confirmed numerous times they give for example 'refub' mobos instead of new ones, when there is even no need for that!
    And most precious thing in your computer, the data... Well, say godbye. In PC, except few minor laptops you can plug in and out storage, so even if your mobo goes bad, you have your data.
    Another thing. Did apple need raid 0 to crank the reads to 3 gigs? Why my non-raid nvme ssd reads out over 4 gigs? Its not a thing nowadays that is top of the line. If I wanted I could make insane raid array for 8.5 gigs of read and around 7.2 gig of write. But who uses raid0, when you can have raid 10 and not risk your data go bad....
    Okay, whatever, my point is, that you are making mistake by saying 'you cannot compare raw horse power, this is apple cpu!'
    And if that change in price seems minor, think about servicability, how your data is safe and prone to random f**kup and how screwed can one get by smallest issue with their expensive as living hell computer.
    Btw, my setup cost me around 2.500$, and only thing I have worse is RAM ammount and screen (4k not 5k, while I dont even think it is a valid argument)

    Fun fact #1: No matter how many cores you put in this Imac Pro, you will never have Intel Integrated QuickSync H264 hardware encoding/decoding, because that's only available on consumer CPU's like the 8700K. Why this matters? Fun fact #2: The latest Adobe Premiere adds support for this hardware encoding/decoding and can use your CPU, your GPU and the Integrated-GPU with hardware encoding all at the same time during playback AND rendering. HUGE performance gain! This is essentially making the Xeon line of CPU's (and this multi thousand dollar Imac) instantly outdated for this type of work.

    The recommended way of installing the display is to install the adhesive strips, but not peel them. Then you dry fit the display, put a wide band of strong masking tape between the bottom of the display and the aluminum case. You then lean the display out, with the tape holding it in place, peel the strips, and then tip it back in. Does make it a lot easier.

    I've learned that my 2011 imac 27" i5 2400 was so slow, not due the ram or SSD. But simply the CPU was downclocked due thermal throttling. So now I've got a Gigabyte mainboard with an 4590 i5. With a huge cooler on the cpu. This thing never thermal throttles, can punch on this cpu with 100% load, and still get Illustrator or Photoshop work done. And with only 16gb ram (instead of my iMac where 32gb is put in) it is in all areas faster and responsive. Basically the iMac is a supercar with the front grille (air inlet) taped shut... I wonder if those performance gains compared to the Apple built computers are because of the thermal paste being better? Or is it the slightly higher clock speed? I wonder how just changing the thermal paste would affect the Apple factory built one.

    I'm sure someone said it already, but idk if you know, but in the U.S. it's illegal to deny warranty unless your actions/modifications caused the damage that you're trying to get covered under warranty. And the onus is on the manufacturer, not on the owner.

      Indeed! Hence the joke at the warranty void sticker. They're meaningless. Cheers! Thanks for watching.

    Will you ever try an even more different CPU? Somenthing that fits in the socket but not something that is a variation of an officially supported CPU.

    This is one of the coolest and craziest things I have seen in years. CRAZY! but it made me smile and cheer. Just found this channel and have already subscribed. Thanks for dealing for me something I will probably never do for myself 😓

    The imac pro is cheaper until you need to fix it. Last time my PC stopped working, I ended up spending $60 on a new stick of RAM. Before that, it was $10 on thermal paste. And both fixes took me less than 10 minutes. With little to no risk of damaging anything or hurting myself (ie. no lcd panel removal and no exposed power supply).
    Apple probably would have charged me for a completely new logic board both times if Linus' experience is anything to go by.

    thermalpaste after its' been heated when touched cold is generally quite tough/hard until heated again.

    You did what LTT couldn't, disassemble a mac pro and put it back together. Nice work

    The table in 3:03 lists Apple update cost as "18-core", not "10 core." I am sure most people knew what you meant, but for those, like me, who scrubbed through the video to find the update-cost chart, this can be confusing.

    Since both CPUs have the same single core boost clock, the 'B' cpu in your friends unit and the 'non-B' cpu in yours, you have to wonder if the thermal dissipation of the OEM thermal paste is actually that bad.
    Maybe you should de-lid the 8 core and retest.

    Great video, I'm wondering if you have seen any of the thermal throttling that's been occurring on the stock iMac Pros people have been complaining about after the upgrade? A nice add to this would've been seeing exactly which thermal paste you used (and show how you apply it so it's not excessive). I've given up on Apple after 18 years and will opt for workstation mid-tower with 4k display, tired of the severe price gouging. For laptops the latest high end 15" competitors are killing it with price and performance- comparatively. Thanks again for the excellent info.

    Agreed 100% on the point about the sexiness of the board. Always wondered that myself. They should make another transparent back plate

    Was shocked at the dollar figures. The most money I've spent on a computer was $3000 in 2004, and that got me a machine that ran Doom 3, on a top of the line graphics card, and included a 5.1 surround system and a 1600x1200 capable, up to 170Hz monitor. Your figures are just too many dollars already... Since what you get is a PC that excels only at video rendering... *BUT* I think this is one of your best videos to date. Top, top stuff!
