"Sure, humor can hurt, even alienate, but the risk is better than the alternative. A steady diet of innocuous, childproof, flavorless mush. Demand to be challenged, To be offended, To be treated like thinking, reasoning adults. And raise your children to be the same. Don't let a comedian, a network, a congressional committee, or an evil genius take away your freedom to laugh at whatever you want."

@P.G. Ferret then that's fine. Listen to whatever makes you laugh. Just know that any and every joke ever made, was making fun of something or someone. The day you tell me a joke that doesn't insult something, minor or major, is the day I tell you that it isn't funny. Like any jokes you like, but that doesn't mean that we should ban offensive humor just because it hurt someone or because someone doesn't like dark humor

@P.G. Ferret "Unless you say something that can attack a certain group, then it's wrong." You're free to think that of the person who said it if you wish, just as that person who said it is free to continue saying it. Are there assholes in the world with some phenomenally fucked up opinions about all kinds of stuff? You bet your ass there are. Do they have any power over you or anyone else with their opinions? Not at all. If you allow speech to be censored and controlled because sometimes people are assholes, then where does it end? Where is the line drawn? You start censoring free speech whenever an uncomfortable idea is brought to the table, and whose to say that the next thing to be censored due to the discomfort it brings others isn't your very own beliefs?

You should never feel ashamed or "immature" for enjoying simple, honest, wholesome, "childish and inoffensive" stuff. There's absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying something that doesn't push any boundaries or break any bubbles.
The only problem is when you're too intimidated to leave that comfort zone, when you never want to grow and experience other things. There's a world of fascinating stuff out there to enjoy.
Take a look at horror movies: especially back in the day, it was easy for straight-laced, puritanical critics to complain about the sex and the violence and the myopic messages. But those people are just _afraid_ of seeing something outside their own reality. Not because it's strange and alien, but because their reality is too narrow.

I find it interesting (and a little telling) that a lot of the comments here aren't addressing this key moment of the rant. Honestly, 'safe' humor on it's own isnt bad, it's when it's overused that it becomes bad. When all you have is bland jokes designed not to offend anyone, well, you really limit yourself since that means you have precious little material since that, by default, means you can't even joke about yourself.

The same can be said of offensive humor. When its all the comedian can offer, or cares to offer, it becomes really hard to take what their saying as humour and more like they're using their job as their personal soapbox to rant and rave about things that bother them.
Alternatively you have those who've learned that they can appeal to an easily appeased audience who've gotten it in their head that slurs and mean spirited slights are funny so they don't have to bother adapting their material beyond cheap shock humour. Which is sorta even worse because it means their acting that way soley for fame not because they want to challenge anything like Duckman said.

Here is a good joke "politicians are scummy you always wonder why they live long it's because they drink the voters blood". Contrast this to a joke about an ethnic group. "Muslims they are all terrorists if you ever see one at a grocery call bomb squad". One joke is not rooted in bigotry and the other is making fun of a group of person and now has the consequences of people going after Muslims." Frankly the Muslim joke would rightfully get jeers

But the fan base of any kind of media will always judge characters or judge any type of Comedy before they get to know them. To me there's nothing more heartless than a politically correct, hypocritical, generic, and toxic society that tells you you should hate this character or not to laugh at whatever comedy no matter what it is, because it's offensive. This is the kind of world we're living in today people, and even though the 90s was a time where political correctness was Raising its ugly head, at least it's more bearable to live in than today's world. • @professornebula6545
      @professornebula6545 6 років тому +55

I think you're missing the underlying message of the video in favor of applying your personal bias. It's obvious you're taking a jab against college campuses because you perceive them to have a liberal bias and perceive liberals as overly politically correct, but one's political affiliation is irrelevant, as there exist both conservatives and liberals which have pushed for increased censorship because they found themselves personally offended by something. Sure, I have seen left-leaning individuals push to try and censor something because they felt it was racially insensitive or gender discriminatory, but I've witnessed just as many conservatives try to censor shows like Family Guy or Southpark because they found it offensive to their Judeo-Christian values or because they found it inappropriate to children. I mean, surely you remember the 90's, when there were tons of Conservative Fundamentalist parent groups trying to ban video games like DOOM or Mortal Kombat because they found the amount of violence in the games to be inappropriate?
I'm not necessarily saying that liberals don't make up a greater percentage of academia than conservatives, as this is statistically true, but I think you're making an unfounded generalization. It's true that there have been some universities which have instituted concepts like "safe spaces," but their intention has generally not been to censor but merely to provide a space where people can freely share their thoughts and opinions without fear of discrimination. I attend a university myself, and I don't always agree with some of the procedures they take. I do think that there is sometimes unnecessary censorship, and I personally feel that we should take the bear minimum precautions and only ever take action when someone is being blatantly harassed. Even so, my university and most others don't go out of their way to censor others. There are just particular situations where they make sure that certain areas and events have some semblance of order (like in a classroom, as you can't have people blatantly insulting each other, as it's not productive to an adequate learning environment). Besides that, however, you're free to go pretty much anywhere else on a campus and do and say what you want. I mean, I can't tell you the number of insane fundamentalist preachers I've seen come to my university and stand outside yelling horrendously discriminatory things. I don't really care, however, as it's not in a place that needs any kind of order to maintain functionality. The university doesn't do anything about it, and I'm glad, because what instead happens is that the students do what you'd expect: We try to have a conversation with them and even make fun of them. In my experience, they're the ones that tend to be unable to handle criticism or humor, rather than the reverse.

Dr Grammary college campuses need to see this, not necessarily because of their predominant political situation, but because they are censoring for the sake of not being offensive at an educational facility- a place were censoring is the doom of its existence. he didn't say anything about "sensitive crybabies" or "betas" or "special snowflakes"- he specifically called out colleges. now, that of course doesn't mean that he DIDN'T mean to take a jab specifically at left-wingers, but there was no point in making an accusation of bias whilst making a comment based on a completely biased assumption.

+VideogameDemocracy well . . . . . I'm not sure if that's ALWAYS true. Just hear me out: I don't claim to be a fan of the show. In fact, the last full episode I've ever watched is the simpsons crossover (because let's face it, we all watched it) but even with the little I know about it I know it can occasionally have a thought provoking episode addressing stupid things that happen in the world and the way to combat it.
Here's an example: I remember an episode where Stewie has a playdate over at his house. It's later revealed that his playdate has a severe medical illness that needs to be treated as soon as possible. Except his parents don't WANT him to be treated in a hospital, they want to cope with his sickness in their own way . . . by praying to God in hopes that he will heal them. This outrages Lois because she can't just sit idly by while a child could die any second, even if her intervention is illegal. She kidnaps the child and tries to rush him to the hospital in the middle of the night. She's later caught up to by the cops and she says "I'll go to jail without fuss, just PLEASE give this child treatment!" The parents catch up with Lois and Lois makes a speech to them. the basics of this speech are "Look, I'm a churchgoer to, and I know you think that God will save your son because God always provides an answer to the faithful. But what if modern day medicine and well trained doctors IS God's answer to your sons illness??"
this is a fine example of Family Guy actually succeeding. They address an issue, explain why it's stupid, throw in a few good laughs here and there and bring it all full circle with a heartwarming speech provoking thought to parents who would actually resort to that type of answer. And don't get me wrong, I'm FULLY AWARE of just how stupid Family Guy can get. . . .but the gems can't be ignored.

TomboTime I never said Family Guy couldn't be smart and funny at the same time, actually, I love Blue Harvest and its sequels, I think they're hilarious affectionate parodies of the Star Wars trilogy, it's just that sometimes it's just shock for shock's sake with no underlying value to it.

Duckman was written in the times it was written in, in response to the experiences of those times. It was specifically aimed at people like George Bush Sr. talking about how The Simpsons was rotting America's morals and similar moral panics driven by people afraid of the new reality. Trying to remove it from its context and apply it to a different one misses that.
People *did* listen to Duckman. And The Simpsons. And South Park. And Family Guy. They *won* the cultural contest and redefined the zeitgeist, away from performative politesse and towards an increasingly open and honest discussion. As a result, we don't really have the same discussions about "protecting the children" anymore that we did back then.
Or, at least, we didn't until this latest wave of Republican lunacy based around whipping up fears about LGBTQ+ people.

    • @bagoheado9065
      @bagoheado9065 8 років тому +39

Miles Prower of course, everyone is offended by something in their lives, I never stated otherwise so no need to call me a hypocrite. but there is a difference how you react to being offended. here I stated "someone being offended by a joke" and I mean that. of course there are bad jokes (or bad timings and audiences) and people are free to use their freedom of speech to say they disliked the joke, but I'm sick and tired of hearing the one reasoning "I'm offended"... boo-hoo. that's just whining. every time someone says that I reply "well I'm offended by your face, see? the world isn't a nice and fair place".
the thing is, there are too many people out there with mindsets that they don't even try to learn to laugh at themselves and they are over-sensitive. I know those people because I used to be one younger, until I learned not to take everything seriously and when I encountered things that offended me I learned to ignore them.
Learning not to be offended by everything around you is a very important skill that should be taught in schools.
I used to have an awful habit when I was younger, and when people joked about my habit and made fun of people like me, I was offended. but there was a truth in their jokes. what I was doing was wrong, and those jokes condemned me. it felt awful to be attacked but I now look back and agree with those jokes. they were right. those jokes had a little bit of truth in them. not every joking subject is like that, the art of comedy is enormous but that's just my own experience about being offended and getting over it.
of course there are more occasions when I "should" be offended. I was abandoned after all and all those "you're adopted" jokes should be offensive to me, but I laugh at them, because in a sad way those jokes are funny, because they are true, they turn something sad into something funny. jokes can be a weird way to approach a difficult subject.
I won't go more in depth about jokes and what is funny and what is not. watch nostalgia critics video about the subject if you're interested.
with internet and social media there is a whole new generation of children learning to deal with rejection and being offended. it has resulted into pretty ugly witch hunts when a lot of these "offended people" band together and swear to destroy the lives of certain people, instead of learning to accept that there are people with different opinions and that there are jokes about ever damn subject in the universe. yes, I'm saying they should get over it. of course there are matters and subjects that should be addressed but on the otherhand if censorship happens then it might be impossible to even address those things.
people have the right to be offended and I have the right to not care about them and their feelings. just because you're offended that doesn't mean you're right/correct about something. a lot of people use the "offended" card nowadays way too easily when they don't know how to cope with their own emotions. offended-card gives a free pass to act like they are somehow right and entitled to special treatment.
there are people out there who are trying to make everything so politically correct that it sucks the life out everything. jokes are supposed to offend someone, otherwise they wouldn't be funny, they scrap the surface of the truth. jokes often show light to subjects that should be addressed.
I don't want anything censored. if you can't handle things the way they are that's your problem, maybe you should try to avoid those offending subjects, instead of trying to make them disappear for everyone.
censorship is not the right way. how do you define what is "not offensive"?
learn to process insults, jokes and other "bad stuff". don't make it someone else's job. I've read enough Orwell to know what censorship can do, and we have a real example in north korea. there is no system that would make censorship work objectively and without cutting away some important truth.
and yeah... now I've wrote enough and I probably addressed my opinion well enough so I don't have to write anything anymore... I don't think I want to have a discussion about this topic even though I replied to you. my original purpose was never to start some discussion about what is offensive and what is not and what is a joke, I simply made a comment about how this video should be shared with people who are "offended", since it seems a lot of people are offended nowadays. I decided to reply to you since you replied to me. you seem to have a different opinion about this subject and that is the reason I don't want to continue the discussion, because I have no interest in debating on the internet about subject like this. internet debates are garbage to begin with.
now I hope you have a nice day (and I mean it, that wasn't sarcasm).
      bye!

Yes comedy can be challenged, but its also subjective. Whatever you and possibly the majority don't find funny, those small minorities will and that's all that matters to them, while what you and the majority will find funny, again those small minorities won't find it funny. To put it simpler, whenever the large masses cheers and laughs at the comedian who mocks feminism, SJWs, and left leaning liberals, there will be a crowd that mocks mens right group, anti SJW, and right leaning conservatives.
This video and message is a outstanding message that talks about how comedy should be crude and mostly politically incorrect, but at the same time, this video and message can also be turned against your favor.

I hate the new CN. It started out as a sort of "VH1" for Hanna-Barbera cartoons, and it was totally open towards adult viewers, not nec'ly naughty violent stupid viewing like we have today, but not pandering to toddlers all day long, either; they behaved like adults were watching. Cartoons were meant for everybody, and they knew. NOW, it's just another Nickelodeon, just like Disney Channel. These new figureheads for these networks just DON'T GET IT.

Comedy that tries to be inoffensive is just as bad as comedy that tries only to be offensive. Comedy should always have a point, a message it's trying to get across. A push for change, a critique of accepted social norms, or even just pointing out the sh*tty things in life. If comdey doesn't make you think about the world in some way, is it really comedy?

The idea of people expressing a dislike of someone or some company with both their voices and their wallet is nothing new. It just seems that way because social media and it's algorithms has allowed us to be a lot better at it, and has made it a lot more visible when it happens.

She'd be relevant anyway because she'd MAKE herself relevant and sucker people into buying her fakeass ideology.
People tried to ignore her before, and that's how she got the amount of influence she has now.
And if you want to be an idiot and ignore what a blatant con artist she is and how she's done everything from stealing art and lets play footage to faking a good portion of the harassment she constantly cries about, be my guest.
If you want to be a complete dumbass and insist she's right even when she constantly moves goalposts so that everything is "misogynist" no matter what a developer does, go right the fuck ahead.
Just don't expect me to respect you or your dumbshit opinions.
Also, I don't hand my money out to fucking EA or Activision, if that's what you're implying because I'm well aware of what shitheads they are.

I like how they just take the masks off at the end, not ending with thunderous applause, merely people questioning their beliefs based on his speech. That shows some self awareness because otherwise it would look preachy or contradictory- it just shows that they don't know what to think, which was the point of his speech.
