  • As prophesized in my Oblongs review, I'm finally doing a video on Duckman. Learning of Everett Peck's passing I had to drop everything else and make this and I'm glad i did. So its time to talk about one of the 3 trailblazers in adult animated sitcoms, the one that many have forgotten about. Duckman
Special thanks to @Spineshark99 for the thumbnail image.

As a fellow Canadian I was introduced to this show in tele toon. I remember it being the first real adult cartoon I ever watched. I never sitting there with my stepfather and my mom just laughing our asses off. In the years past I have since lost both but sometimes, I’ll throw the DVD on and just laugh with my wife. It almost feels like we’re watching it with my parents.

I read about Frank Zappa's whole involvement with the show, turns out it's much deeper than you think.
Frank Zappa was friends with Gabor Csupo, and even helped him learn English since Csupo was a Hungarian immigrant.
Much further, Csupo and Matt Groening tried to levy Zappa apart of the Simpsons in some way but Fox rejected it.
It was a result of this failure to involve him in Duckman, including his music and Dweezil being casted, but he died weeks before the show premiered and all that remained was the licensing of his music catalogue.

That final episode was a giant "fuck you" to the studio execs, who revealed the show's cancellation mid-season, before the episodes had been completed. Rumor has it that the studio execs and the writers/production staff were constantly at odds, and it was the "suits" who demanded all these dumb, show-changing, hackneyed "ideas" because they didn't like the show's ratings (which couldn't _possibly_ be because they bumped the show to an _even later_ timeslot and moved Season 4 to the dreaded Friday night slot while outright refusing all syndication offers). The story goes that the Duckman staff still had two episodes to go writing-wise and decided to do a giant "fuck you" to the studio who they already hated and who had just announced their cancellation. What would piss off a studio complaining about ratings? How about a _whole episode_ Star Trek spoof that has nothing to do with the show and turns out to just be a bad Leonard Nemoy dream? Hence "Where No Duckman has Gone Before" (their penultimate and _best_ episode). Ok, now we've pissed off the suits with our nerd-tastic entire-episode Star Trek spoof.....how about we do a tongue-in-cheek episode that includes every cheesy and ham-fisted trope of studio-exec bad writing we can possibly fit into 22 minutes and, in doing so, demonstrate how show-destroying and just _dumb_ these tropes are? And then what if we even break the fourth wall and have Cornfed say so outright. Hence "Four Weddings Inconceivable", which wasn't a "fuck you" to the _audience_ , but the world's biggest "fuck you" to the studio, who, if they were to revive it today, would somehow have to resolve like 15 plot threads in the opening vignette, which is a deliberately impossible task.

    • @generationwhyentertainment2455

8:26 this is nitpicking, but I don't think "insults" is the right word to use here. Duckman does not "insult" these subject, it mocks them. It isn't malicious. It doesn't simply berate subjects, it jokes about them to make the viewer think about stuff the show points at. I think many people confuse these two terms and it ends up fueling the cultural war we experience nowdays.
But other than that - great video. Thanks for your effort! I love Duckman since I discovered it around 2012. I was amazed by this discovery, because no one I knew even heard about the show, and I find it as funny and relevant as early Simpsons or South Park. The voice work in the show is amazing.
My favorite episode is definitelty "Apocalypse Not", with the Star Trek parody one being close second. I love the cynical ending in it.

People say it was ahead of its time but no and I think the reason for parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, next door neighbors, doctors, the pizza man a few blocks away and if lucky your grandparents are always saying “back in our days…” etc is either 2 things…
    1. that to they don’t want to acknowledge that their generation is like an unwanted package of bees stinging just as hard 50 years ago up till now this very moment…
    2. they are blinded by said bee stings that nothing has changed.
Weather that be climate change, mental health, equality, poverty, the school system, neurodivergent representation… No one cares… the pressure of life is too much and Duckman demonstrates that.

Here in Poland, we DID get Duckman... but only on a premium channel called Canal+. And it also aired from 1996 to 1998, so before my time. MAYBE they had some re-runs in the early 2000s but that seems unlikely. And even then - premium channel. Family thought those were a waste of money.
Does this ever happen to you? That years later you learn about some cartoon that aired on some channel you didn't have access to as a kid but you wish you did?
Happened to me with a couple of Nickelodeon shows in the 2000s. Namely KaBlam!, Aah! Real Monsters, Rocko's Modern Life and Avatar: The Last Airbender (those got Polish dubs and aired here, just on the channels I didn't have).
On the other hand, the channels I had access to DID air Rugrats, CatDog, Angry Beavers and Wild Thornberrys.
Last but not least, no one bothered with Invader Zim. Maybe it was too edgy or something. I've heard they cancelled Polish Darkwing Duck after 7 episodes because the censors deemed it "too violent for children."
Honestly, this is so random, it feels like the TV execs were just throwing darts to determine which channel would get what.

That’s usually what happens with international broadcast. A network will bid on the rights for a show and whoever pays the most gets it. With the incentive being the advertising revenue for when they air the show
Yeah I only had basic cable so I got some channels but not all.

    • @ELEKTROSKANSEN

Sure happened to me, with the same exact network. I remember Canal+ airing some adult anime movies for the first time in Poland around 1997, movies like Akira and Ghost in the Shell, and of course I didn't have C+ at home. What's kinda worse is that my classmate had it, but he was a bully and a giant asshole, so I couldn't even ask him to tape it for me, because we hated each other with a passion. He loved to piss me off, every time Canal+ aired an anime movie he would come to school next day and mock it because he was a stereotypical jock and thought anime was for loosers.

I am flummoxed on why you can't watch Duckman or purchase it to this day. You can find all the episodes on UA-cam, but mostly they are scattered and in odd forms, making them difficult to watch. It was a great series indeed, and came in on the heels of a show like "Parker Lewis can't Lose."
If you want to find very unique animation like this, check out the British series, "Monkey Dust." It's adult animation that ran in 2003-05. You might find it insane, but you won't be able to turn away!

Honestly, Duckmans only failure is that it didn't have allot of staying power culturally, and thats largely because it was on a network thats not culturally relevant either. If it was on Fox, adult swim, or even MTV it would probably share the same nostalgic fame that many shows enjoy with a quarter of its episode run.

I really don't understand why the writers would leave the final series finale of Duckman as a cliffhanger in the end because if they were planning to the end Series forever then why the hell didn't they just have a happy ending instead of an unanswered cliffhanger. I mean Duckman, Cornfed and King Chicken were going to marry Honey, Beverly and Bernice as the wedding goes off without a hitch until Duckman's supposedly deceased wife, Beatrice, returns which doesn't really make sense since everyone including Duckman though she was dead. Only Cornfed knew that Beatrice was alive but he never told Duckman this at all because why would he keep this a secret from his friend/business partner in the first place.

Bernice says to Duckman other men will rape which has been implied to happened to Duckman or at least sexually abused, with one episode saying he did a 'deed' as a kid for candy, also another has a flashback where his stepdad punishes him by putting him in a cell with real inmates with one looking at him in a way while stepping closer as the flashback then cuts.

Great video ^^ I just started watching this show recently (as you can tell from my pfp, I like it a lot lol) it's funny you say season 4 is your least favorite. I currently am on that one and so far it's the one I've enjoyed the most, though I will agree that it's weak episodes are... weak lol. I see where you're coming from, but here's my two cents since I figured I might as well bring em up. I think it emphasizes a lot of the character development much better than seasons 2 and 3 (overall, but those had some stand out episodes in that regard) and I also am biased and really like Beverly for some reason. The episodes in season 4 sometimes had me genuinely not wanting them to end, and I honestly really enjoy them. I do see what you mean in it being more cartoony and less concerned with satire than 1,2 and even 3, though. I still have a few episodes left, too. Maybe it goes downhill from where I'm at. Especially at that finale lol.
Season 1 is definitely the strongest in my opinion. Season 2 is pretty good but I actually enjoyed it the least, and season 3 was mixed. It's best episodes were great but it's bad episodes were, well... weak. I never had those thoughts on the Angela arc you mentioned there. About Face was fantastic, the follow up... not so much. I actually really liked the beginning of that episode (forgot the title), but the end was definitely a cop-out.

There were some moments in the show that were uncomfortably phonic or possibly racist but generally the cultural critic punched up and was on point. Certainly a product of it's time, also tho Duckman many many many times hinted at our pointed out that he's bisexual, which is a mixed bag as an antihero. He's doing the work to normalize it however as I see it, and there's a lot of complex strong female characters. TBH, even a lot of the perverted weirdos are oddly humanized, which... gotta appreciate the complexity ✨
