If you have worked with people in France (many of my friends traveled there for work) unironnically this is true. They went to France expecting to work a whole day on a American schedule, and when meals came everything came to a screeching halt and the meal lasted for hours.
One of my favorite jokes is when Rita says that her father broke every bone in his body trying to find the ruby, and when he finally see him, he's literally wearing a full-body cast because of all the broken bones.
You gotta praise a movie set around sewers and toilets that has the decency to have only TWO poop jokes! (The “chocolate buttons and the candy bar in the sewer) THAT TAKES SOME SERIOUS RESTRAINT 😂
I appreciated that they didn't include a "Liar Revealed" plot. They were supposed to, with Roddy lying to Rita about promising her a Ruby if she took him up. Thankfully, they recognised it as clichéd.
My favourite Whitey moment- Rita- "Alright, alright- check the tin" Spike opens tin and is immediately knocked up and back by a spring snake Whitey (completely deadpan)- "Was it in there?" 😂
1:06 To top that off, these characters, specifically Wallace and Gromit, have actually been responsible for saving a dying business. According to Allan Tsai’s channel (look him up if you haven’t, he’s got lots of great movie trivia), in the Wallace and Gromit short “A Grand Day Out,” when Wallace and Gromit are having their picnic on the moon, Wallace says “Wensleydale” when referring to a cheese he eats. According to the animators, they did this because it made his mouth look nice and toothy. At the time, Aardman did not realize that the Wensleydale cheese factory was about to declare bankruptcy, and after the success of the short, sales for their cheese skyrocketed, thus saving the factory.
Aardman also visited the Wensleydale factory during production of the second (I think) short, and everyone wanted to meet them and shake their hand! It's a really cute story!
Another reason this movie was CG was because Aardman Studios had a fire which broke out after the Wallace & Gromet movie came out and destroyed all their clay assets, so while they literally had to rebuild the studio, they had to use other forms of animation for the time being

Another Fun Fact: Once Roddy enters the sewer version of London, a female mouse shouts "Feed the flies, tuppence a bag!" This is a reference to Mary Poppins, set in London, where it's "feed the birds, tuppence a bag!"
Another Fun Fact: As Roddy and Rita are at the door to her home, there's a newspaper page at the right. It has the headline, "Mysterious Veggie Monster (word missing) Local Gardeners", a reference to The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.
It may not be one of the most highly regarded DreamWorks films, But it's one that I enjoy! In fact one of my favorite parts of this movie is when Roddy steals Rita's boat and her brother says "He's gonna steal your boat" that part always makes me laugh!
I can already imagine a rat wearing yellow and blue spandex with metal claws against a toad wearing red and purple clothes and a helmet with magnetic powers. Even Deadpool would love to make a joke of that, and it will be hilarious.

My favourite moment is when the 3 mixers zoom out of the pipes followed by the toaster. The confident laugh, ding, and subsequent electrocution just kill me
The opening credits playing to "Dancing With Myself" may be one of my favorite opening credit montages in animation. The song choice and imagery just match together so well and set up the film in a great way
It's subjective, and I'll have to respectfully disagree with you, there. I get that the Minions have grown to the point of being obnoxiously ubiquitous, but, personally, I find them easier to look at. The slugs in this movie make me feel uncomfortable, and I can't explain why.
Another Fun Fact: When Roddy tells Rita that he will pay her in jewels, the script originally called for him lying about this. After re-writes, it was decided that he would be telling the truth, as him lying about this would be cliché.
I’m grateful they didn’t do that. It isn’t as common for one in a “liar revealed” trope to lie about having an amazing family with many relatives when they’re actually lonely.
It also just kind of wouldn't have suited his character. He was supposed to be kinda naive and innocent, that kind of blatant malicious trickery would have felt really out of nowhere
A Casting Fact: Robert De Niro, Kevin Pollak, Michael Richards, Marshall Efron, Paul Walker, Robin Williams, and William Shatner were considered for the role of Spike.
If Robert De Niro had gotten the role that would be kind of funny being sort of a rat version of a certain character that was portrayed by his buddy Joe Pesci. Some friends and I have agreed that Spike and Whitey are like rat versions of Harry and Marv.
Fun Fact: Aardman's first fully-CGI feature film. The reason for using computer animation, instead of the studio's trademark clay animation, was the numerous scenes involving water, which is nearly impossible to do convincingly in stop-motion.
And apparently there might have been a fire at one of their warehouses or studios that prevented them from working with traditional stop motion animation with their clay models
Aardman teams up with CGI animation studio: Decode Entertainment to produce its first CGI animated series called Chop Socky & Chooks from March 2007 to September 2008... It won't be broadcast in the UK and Europe till March 2008 to July 2009 on Cartoon Network.
Another Fun Fact: In the Mexican Spanish dubbed version of the film, the voice of the narrator of the World Cup final match between Germany and England was dubbed by a well-known soccer narrator in Mexico, being this Christian Martinolli, who has expressed that not although did the dubbing, his work was not paid
Glad you like this one, Doug. This one was a regular in my house growing up, and yeah, some of the humor didn’t age well, but I still remember it fondly.
It was Aardman, Gumby and Laika that inspired me to pursue stop motion. And it's funny how I actually thought his film WAS claymation when I was little.
Another Fun Fact: Several of the names found in the DVDs, and on Rita's father's cast, belong to the children of producers, directors, and other people involved in the movie.
Fun fact: rats struggle when they are kept as one in a cage and it's seen as cruel to just have one. They're often caged in groups of two or more. This might explain why Roddy is going insane at the beginning of the film.
Another Fun Fact: In the scene where Roddy gets flown into the air in the sewers just after riding the flying teacup ride, several rats can be heard saying, "Is it a bird? Is it a plane?" referencing the Superman movies. Additionally, a tune similar to the Superman theme can also be heard amongst this.
What they should've done was make the first half of the movie claymation and the sewer part CGI. Like how in the wizard of oz everything is well not black and white just brown for the first half and then things get colorful for the second half when Dorothy gets the Oz
I guess the unconventional framing that helps Chicken Run (not being cookie-cutter plot) in this case just makes the opening unpleasant and sends us off on a bad note. What I would always recommend is WRITE everything in medias res. Even if you don't start it that way, by adding the starting bits last you can make sure it starts off snappy and sets up exactly what it has to, with author knowing everything it leads to.
My friend's dad works for Aardman. He said there was beef between DreamWorks and Aardman, specifically Nick Park. And after this movie they prematurely terminated their contract
Another Fun Fact: Bill Nighy and Andy Serkis, who portrayed Whitey and Spike, respectively, played motion-captured villains in famous movie franchises. Serkis portrayed Gollum in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings film franchises, while Nighy portrayed Davy Jones in the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise.
Another Fun Fact: When Rita shuts down the power by pulling the lead from the console (approximately 52 minutes) the "shutdown" sound is from the Millennium Falcon in the Empire Strikes Back when Han Solo tries to engage the faulty hyperdrive after escaping from Hoth.
"It's impossible!" "England is winning! Anything's possible!" That joke floored me as a kid, especially when it cuts to England losing it in the second half. And the joke gets funnier with each World Cup and Euros. 🤣🤣 #ItsNeverComingHome
I seriously love this movie. Greatly underrated. One thing I’m a bit surprised you didn’t mention in this review is that they use two tropes that you’ve said in the past you hated (the misunderstanding and the liar revealed), but they use them in ways that they show the stupidity of them. They literally either brush it aside or resolve the issue in a matter of seconds without the need to complicate things.
Another Fun Fact: When the stove falls through the floor of Rita's house, a cockroach that was sitting behind it can be seen holding a book. The book is Franz Kafka's novella "Metamorphosis", the protagonist of which turns into a (non specified) insect, which is often translated as a cockroach. The cockroach appears to be reading a French translation: the title "La métamorphose" is clearly seen, while the Ka- in Kafka is obscured by the insect's "hand".
I'll never forget this movie because this was the movie that my ex-boyfriend had taken me to see years ago. It was the perfect movie for kissing in the dark. So, I definitely feel that this movie has a very warm place in my heart. While it may have failed globally, it still remains the best movie in the universe to me! So shut up!
1:48: Ah, yes. “Arthur Christmas”. Though the only notable difference between them here is that while they’re both CG, only “Flushed Away” still uses Aardman’s signature style.
My brother was lucky to get a tour of Aardman Studios to see the making of the Shaun The Sheep TV series for CBBC Extra thanks to our local animation station and it was just after Flushed Away came out. They did actually make the characters out of clay initially, then they scanned them into a computer to animate them. He saw the models of the two butlers (who were named Gilbert and Sullivan) and was told by the animators that they were cut last-minute for the reason you stated- they felt it was funnier and better for the story if Roddy was completely alone.
From all stop motion animated films, Claymation with comedy gives a surreal impression. Tom Sawyer movie is one of the childhood movies that have scary moments. Aardman was so successful in the humor such as Wallace and Gromit
Originally flushed away was supposed to be stop motion by aardman but Aardmen was being mistreated by dreamworks DreamWorks was not allowing them to do what they wanted and they just got rid of them afterwards this is the last Aardman film with DreamWorks
Another Fun Fact: When the Toad is about to freeze Roddy and Rita in the fridge, he says the line "shut that door" in a Larry Grayson voice. Larry was a camp British 1970s game show presenter whose catchphrase was "shut that door".
The lines that immediately pop into my mind as soon as i think of this movie even though i haven’t seen it in years are “have you seen my dad?” from the goldfish and the conversation between the two rats at the end “will you be good to the girl that takes care of me?” “I’ll be as good as gold to ‘er”
I rewatched this one last month, and it *really* holds up. It's not deep or profound, but it's a solid comedy with likable, relatable characters. I love the singing slugs, I love the French frogs (especially the mime), I love the idiotic American tourists, I love the assorted Easter eggs, and I love Whitey's line about curry giving him a "bum like a Japanese flag."
Looking back at this movie, I wonder if the opening scenes with Rodney in the house would inspire the opening scenes with Rango (though two anthro pet protagonists that are temporarily isolated and pretend to be surrounded by friends/peers might be a coincidence)...
Not just because of the water, the other major reason that they went CG was because that the year prior their wear house burned down with most of their clay supplies and arcived sets too including the entire chicken run set and most of the original wallace and gromit sets
Found this out years ago via the bonus features on my "Curse of the Were Rabbit" DVD. There were a few reasons why Aardman had to do CGI for flushed away, but one of the big ones was the massive studio fire in October 2005. Without their inventory of plasticine and the devastating loss of archival pieces, Aardman stepped away from claymation for a while.
12:51 that one hurts me a lot by reminding me of how I felt when I was hit in the gut by a 30 kilometer soccer ball when I was 12 years old. When the shock factor begun, I actually cried out of sheer pain.
If I had a nickel for every UA-camr I watch, who put out a Flushed Away video in the last 24 hours, I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice
13:48 Oh c’mon! Critic didn’t highlight the Batman ‘66 reference when Spike says “To the Ratmobiles (Batman ‘66 transition).” When I first saw the movie, that was easily the funniest joke in the movie for me.
OMG! This is the movie where my daddy tied me up while making me tell him that I will always be his little bear! I love this movie so much! thank you daddy! 😍
Another Fun Fact: While Roddy (Hugh Jackman) and Rita (Kate Winslet) are in the fridge, one of the frozen rats is parodying Han Solo, in his famous carbonite pose from Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back.
I absolutely love Flushed Away! It did do well in the UK, which isn't surprising as Aardman is very well loved here, and it is a VERY British film, with the French jokes, the fact that it revolves around the world cup final and England lose on penalties. Whitey is also my favourite character! His best line is when Spike says "My tummy hurts" and Whitey says "That would have been the curry last night Spike, I was the same. I've got a bum like a Japanese flag" 🤣😂 Just brilliant!
He became obsessed with his new rat and seeing how a servant of the house flushed him I’m guessing it was a situation of Charles just saying he didn’t want him anymore
@@LidWOW to be honest, it would’ve actually been a good plot twist if the unknown rat who replaced the Toad turned out to be Roddy himself, with the Toad wanting to kill him over something that was out of his control.
Another Fun Fact: When the halftime whistle blows for the football, the shot of the TV screen shows the score as 4 to England and 2 to Germany. This is in reference to the score of the final of the famous 1966 World Cup, where England won for the first and only time against Germany
@@koneheadcokehead4981 it later turned out that England lost the match on penalty grounds, yet I’m surprised there WASN’T a riot in the sewer equivalent to London (considering how seriously many in the United Kingdom take football)! Then again, I think their defeat at the World Cup final was overshadowed by Roddy & Rita saving them from mass genocide by flooding, which must’ve been heartwarming for Roddy in particular. This is because he has no family or friends back home within Kensington Gardens or the surrounding area. I also imagined the golden cage is symbolic of a glorified prison for Roddy, like Xanadu for Charles Foster Kane.
The very first thing I saw of this was a live action ad with two kids looking disgustingly down a toilet with a narrator asking: “do you ever wonder what’s down…there?” And a third kid (this is still live action) splashes out of the toilet all soaked and says: “you guys gotta try this!” And flushes himself back down! And that is when we zoom down into the porcelain throne and we see footage of the movie…with the final thing after the title being that kid coming back up the toilet and asking: “who’s next?” Still remember that, and I was hooked immediately!
I expected "Rise of the Guardians" but I'm ok with this. I also remember the trailer with the hamster butlers and it also bugged me when I saw they were cut from the film.
Now, as a kid, I praised Aardman for their projects, their animation, their characters as well as their style. Wallace and Gromit was and still is my all time favorite franchise from the studio because they were the first characters I was ever introduced to. This movie is good. I'm actually shocked it's CGI and not stop motion.
Another Fun Fact: Hugh Jackman's first animated movie. He would later lend his voice to Memphis the Emperor Penguin in Happy Feet, Bunny in Rise of the Guardians, and Sir Lionel Frost in Missing Link.
Jammy is a slang word for "lucky" in the UK. So a Jammy Dodger is a scamp or scoundrel who can talk his way out of trouble. It is said that the cookie got its name after the character Roger the Dodger from "The Beano" comics, one of Britain's most popular comics since the 1930s.
If I had a nickel for every time dreamworks released two movies in one year, I’d have more than just two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened more than twice.
Wait, seriously? Wolverine AND Magneto were in Flushed Away? How in God's name did I NEVER know that til now? Granted, I'm pretty sure I don't have Flushed Away on DVD so haven’t watched it much, but that's one huge detail I'm flabbergasted I somehow missed all this time

@@nathonso_edits I'm pretty sure it's also an Inuendo, which is more than just an Italian suppository.
I thought it was a plsy on Jolly Roger or Jolly Rancher😮
@@DragonKnight90001 Same now that you said that.
My favourite moment is when the 3 mixers zoom out of the pipes followed by the toaster. The confident laugh, ding, and subsequent electrocution just kill me
The opening credits playing to "Dancing With Myself" may be one of my favorite opening credit montages in animation. The song choice and imagery just match together so well and set up the film in a great way
This movie singlehandedly kickstarted my love for Billy Idol since a young age
💯True
Slugs > Minions. Prove me wrong!
To prove you wrong would be like saying that neither the sun nor the moon exist.
There are no lies detected here! 🤣
That would’ve been two lies he told her in the movie.
Minions 25: Gru's Funeral. Wow. XD
I had no idea about the butlers. Very interesting. Also, my mom loves that Nemo reference. And the larvae.
And because using water on plasticine would damage the models.
Aardman teams up with CGI animation studio: Decode Entertainment to produce its first CGI animated series called Chop Socky & Chooks from March 2007 to September 2008...
It won't be broadcast in the UK and Europe till March 2008 to July 2009 on Cartoon Network.
@@FistfulOfCouragethat too. I cannot remember when the incident happened but I do remember something happening at the aardman studios warehouse
But for some reason later they did Pirates: In Adventure With Scientists! mixing both Stop Motion and CG.
Le Frog and his henchman is basically "how many french stereotypes and jokes we can make" that works perfectly.
Fun fact: Flushed Away and Penguins of Madagascar are two dreamworks movies that have the SAME rotten tomato score.
The humor in this movie I feel is very underrated. Some great and creative British humor in this film.
That's because, as a British person, it is THE best type of humor.
As a Brit, I grew up with Flushed Away, and Wallace and Gromit will always be a British classic!
It was Aardman, Gumby and Laika that inspired me to pursue stop motion.
And it's funny how I actually thought his film WAS claymation when I was little.
I mean, it’s called Flushed Away, you shouldn’t expect a masterpiece
It’s a fun movie, nothing more and nothing less.

@@chasehedges6775Exactly.
Just like with the Super Mario Bros animated movie.
@@chasehedges6775nah its a masterpiece
You forgot the best part, Is that guy wearing my underpants?!
What they should've done was make the first half of the movie claymation and the sewer part CGI. Like how in the wizard of oz everything is well not black and white just brown for the first half and then things get colorful for the second half when Dorothy gets the Oz
I love that this film let Ian McKellen give an unapologetically goofy performance and it works
I think Doug missed a perfect opportunity for a Magneto and Professor X joke when he went into his backstory about King *Charles*
Seeing how he is now KING Charles, I wondered if the Toad could’ve been a glorified figurehead on stamps & money, like the royal family. 😂
9:14 , he did do one here so it's enough
I'm not the only one who was introduced to "Dancing with Myself" through this film right?
Not the only one
Not the best Aardman movie, that would be Chicken Run, but still enjoyable
Sounds like someone who forgot the cheese, Grommit
both were great but chicken run was awesome
@@nicholasgoodard5746 true, because it is actually Wallace and gromit: the wrong trousers, that's the best movie Aardman has ever made.
The pirates in adventure with scientists is the best Aardman film
My friend's dad works for Aardman. He said there was beef between DreamWorks and Aardman, specifically Nick Park. And after this movie they prematurely terminated their contract
Another Fun Fact: Bill Nighy and Andy Serkis, who portrayed Whitey and Spike, respectively, played motion-captured villains in famous movie franchises. Serkis portrayed Gollum in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings film franchises, while Nighy portrayed Davy Jones in the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise.
Flushed Away (2006) Turns 18 on Sunday, November 3rd, 2024
This movie was a childhood classic for me
2006 being 18 years ago is wild to me.

NC: THERE THEY ARE! THERE THEY ARE! THEY'RE THE BUTLERS! YES! hoooooooooooooo!
*Also NC* : yeah , the film is better without them
Yet Another Fun Fact: in the US, tomatoes are biologically a fruit but legally a vegetable…for reasons. 😅
"It's impossible!"
"England is winning! Anything's possible!"
That joke floored me as a kid, especially when it cuts to England losing it in the second half. And the joke gets funnier with each World Cup and Euros. 🤣🤣 #ItsNeverComingHome
That must be my favourite meme
US: Makes a sport. Nobody plays it. Becomes world champion.
UK: Makes a sport. Every plays it. Loses every time.
@@koneheadcokehead4981 That’s such a fun little bit of detail for such a quick joke.
So shut up!
This was actually the first movie I owned on DVD when I was a kid
Another Fun Fact: When Roddy is selecting a movie for the movie premiere, the DVDs with real titles are all DreamWorks movies.
That was a nice touch
Underappreciated reference: The villain saying "return what you have stolen from me," as a reference to Time Bandits.

Is it?
@@IvoryElvenson I always interpreted it as such, although I might be wrong.
1:48:
Ah, yes.
Ima need you to chill….why do you over post in every thread of every NC video?
Ah yes, the Aardman movie that got me into claymation that isn't actually stop motion.
8:53 if Dreamworks did Rat actor of the Wolverine vs Toad actor of Magento be like
13:48 Oh c’mon! Critic didn’t highlight the Batman ‘66 reference when Spike says “To the Ratmobiles (Batman ‘66 transition).” When I first saw the movie, that was easily the funniest joke in the movie for me.
15:04
Roddy: Goodni...
Toph: GO TO SLEEP ALREADY!!
I always forget that this movie is cgi, even though it has the stop-motion look and feel to it.
Fun fact: Nostalgia Critic wears glasses
Fun fact: this is already mentioned in the video
Fun Fact: This movie exists
I absolutely love Flushed Away! It did do well in the UK, which isn't surprising as Aardman is very well loved here, and it is a VERY British film, with the French jokes, the fact that it revolves around the world cup final and England lose on penalties.
Whitey is also my favourite character! His best line is when Spike says "My tummy hurts" and Whitey says "That would have been the curry last night Spike, I was the same. I've got a bum like a Japanese flag" 🤣😂 Just brilliant!
The teenage rat's metal band t-shirt literally says "Bubonic Plague"! 😂
So The kid never noticed his toad was missing? He's pet that he had for years probably
The very first thing I saw of this was a live action ad with two kids looking disgustingly down a toilet with a narrator asking: “do you ever wonder what’s down…there?”
And a third kid (this is still live action) splashes out of the toilet all soaked and says: “you guys gotta try this!” And flushes himself back down! And that is when we zoom down into the porcelain throne and we see footage of the movie…with the final thing after the title being that kid coming back up the toilet and asking: “who’s next?”
Still remember that, and I was hooked immediately!
I expected "Rise of the Guardians" but I'm ok with this.
I also remember the trailer with the hamster butlers and it also bugged me when I saw they were cut from the film.
I found it odd as well but it does make the movie better.
Same. That's actually the main reason I clicked this video (to see if they were mentioned).
Granted, I'm pretty sure I don't have Flushed Away on DVD so haven’t watched it much, but that's one huge detail I'm flabbergasted I somehow missed all this time
You know this movie is good when it can use toilet humor and make it be pretty good
“Bingo!”
“Scrabble!”
“Enough games!”
One of my all time favorite jokes 😂
2:57 Nobody in England eats a star gazey pie anymore Doug. It would have been more accurate to show beans on toast (due to it’s fibre content).
Fun Fact: Frog is apparently a pejorative word for French people, since they were believed to eat frogs.
