THERE ARE SO MANY BITS OF TRIVIA AND FACTOIDS FOR METAL GEAR. As a big fan, I tried to gather some of my favorites here, as well as some really odd ones. Hope you guys enjoy. Metal Gear is weird and awesome. Also yes, I made a silly error on the Hal and David bit. PLZ DON'T KILL ME.
-Jake
I never played metal gear solid...let the hate comments commence
gabriel villalpando That's not how you start a flame war! This is how!
GOKU WOULD TOTALLY WIN IN A FIGHT AGAINST SUPERMAN!
There, you're welcome.
Ty master
gabriel villalpando All must know the proper technique of fanning the flame wars.
I think Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater was the best game for me... well in my opinion
My god, a protracted two week long sniper battle is the most Metal Gear thing I can think of. My heart wouldn't be able to take that.
all hail lord Kojima
Hail!
I'm playing mgs V right know and I just have to say that it's even better than I expected. Only Kojima can blow my anyway high expectation
+RedEye Megatron would like a word with you.
+Jokairou94 Fuck off, Megatron. And stop wasting your time killing Optimus, he's just gonna go back being alive again.
Tamaki742 .....okay...
I remember in mgs 3 if you fired the belt fed lmg Big Boss would start to do a rambo yell.
+Cowboycomando54 Also does the same thing in MGS4 - Fun Fact
I loved to unequippe the bosses shirt and use the belt fed during the motorcycle chase in mgs3.
what
He does that in Peace Walker too iirc
+Michael Abrahamovich yeh
FUN FACT. Because I was so young and inexperienced as a gamer when playing MGS3, I actually killed The End via time COMPLETELY BY ACCIDENT. It took me a week to beat him in real life time, because I had no idea what I was doing. He just suddenly died and I was like "oh okay then" and carried on. Just something cool that happened to me as a kid.
Same. I was just too scared of his boss fight as a kid, so I quit. A month or so later I came back and was really happy he had died on his own. I did beat him for real a while ago when re-playing all the MGSs.
The same happened to me. I decided not to play MGS3 on my DS because I got Super Mario Bros. I Played that for a couple weeks, finished the game, and then came back to MGS3 extremely confused with my discovery of the End dying of old age
its sad that the new game does not have david hayter
14vandar very sad.
14vandar yeah it definitely takes some time to getting used to sutherlands voice but actually i think it fits even better than hayter (don´t get me wrong; he´s great but, you know... )
it does seem to fit but as a fan i feel like it just is not snake
14vandar no way...they kept snake but got rid of hayter? disgusting...they could at least have killed him off and put in a new char with a new voice...the way they do with codename BOND...
caveymoley Technically Solid Snake is a clone of Big Boss, So it's not the "same person" and I get Jordan's point, but Naked Snake also had the voice of solid (AKA David Hayter), as a clone it could be assumed that he should have the same voice. If Naked Snake had had a separate voice actor, this of course would seem to be different.
"10 facts of the Metal Gear Solid you probably didn't know."
Try me.
1. There are more than enough points in the PROLOGUE of MGSV that hint at the end.
2. Contrary to popular belief, the director of MGS: The Twin Snakes (Ryuhei Kitamura), wanted to faithfully recreate all of the cutscenes from the original MGS. It was Kojima who requested all the over-the-top cutscenes, seeing as how he was a fan of Ryuhei Kitamura's cinematic style.
3. On top of the blood-smelling disc concept for the MGS PS disc, Kojima thought of making it so that if you died once, the disc would stop working PERMANENTLY.
5. Konami is full of D-Horse shit.
6. It was planned to have the soldiers in MGS3 to speak Russian, but the Japanese Voice Cast shot it down.
7. I say Japanese Voice Cast because the Japanese voices are recorded first. The only exception so far to this is MGSV.
8. The Japanese VO for Big Boss is the actual father of the Japanese VO for Snake.
9. Number 8 is why Big Boss was recast for the Japanese dialogue for MGS4.
10. Kojima intended for both 8 and 9. The father and the son were estranged and distant from each other long before MGS4 entered full development. Kojima wanted the two to reconcile and THEY DID. Sadly, the father died in January of 2015 from a heart disorder, much like how Big Boss died from FOXDIE.
+Dennis Claros "if you died once, the disc would stop working PERMANENTLY."
I'd actually like to see a dev studio do this, I wonder if Kojima will do it now he's working with Sony.
+Madness1 that would be a dumbass idea.
+erko78 To say an idea is "dumbass" shows how much of a dumbass the accuser is.
+Madness1 It would be cool but they would never sell games if people thought they'd have to pay full game price for a second life.
Just Someone wow this list is a lot better. The video is common knowledge except for the blood thing
BOSS, THAT'S AN ENEMY GUNSHIP! A single burst from it's machine gun could CUT A MAN IN HALF.
What if you're a gunship? What if I am?
Cody Rhodes boss thats an enemy gunship a single burst of its machine gun could cut a man in half be careful boss
First time he said that i wanted to try that does it do that
It detected me and it didnt kill me instantly it took 5 seconds GG also it didnt cut him in half
I was so dissapointed for some reason
What would this world be like without lovely japan
Sasuke Uchiha A much better place :P
***** as do i
***** you're pretty good
i can't die. because, I AM REVOLVER OCELOT
i'm sorry i tried to kill you in 1964
I actually legitimately found the end thing....I couldn't beat him one night, got frustrated and saved the game and turned my ps2 off....came back a week and half later and found that cutscenes....I was like "easiest boss win ever!" lol. I also found out about this nightmare sequence on accident. found myself in the cell late at night, saved and went to bed....and got that. I actually reset my game and ejected to make sure it was snake eater. craziest moment as a gamer
Fact 11: Dsp sucks at this game
But that isn't a fact people don't know.
+PrimalForlorn Darksidephil ? yeah but i'm grateful to him because if not for him sucking so bad i would have never picked up the game myself xD
Jester Muffin Same here. i actually bought MGS3 just to see if it was that hard. Not really, it's phil who don't know how to play games
+PrimalForlorn He plays it like COD.
Demon Rantz And he clearly sucks at it, a simple game even my little cousin and beat
That sniper battle was one of the most awesome things in videogames that I've ever played. And now, finding out that I could kill this old sniper just like that is really cool. I love the metal gear games more and more
What Gray Fox is chanting in #9 is actually also said by Sunny in MGS4, The AI in MGS2, Ocelot in MGSV and even some cut audio of Venom Snake.
It's train stations in Japan.
Also the Peace Walker AI in the pod when you're removing the boards.
funny how number 1 is the only thing i already knew from this list ^_^ awesome list btw
Yeah, and the psychmantis he mentioned.
Samuel Richards oh yeah, that too, that fact or easter egg is so common mentioned i didnt even payed attention, but still nice video
Me too
Norbee419 it's so well known because it's SO COOL!!! Wish more games did that.
This is Major Tom to ground control.
Can you hear me Major Tom?
+smiith5 No, I'm using a Mono TV...
+TehObLiVioUs *!*
+TehObLiVioUs Huh? You're not using a stereo TV?
Dennis Edgar Actually my current TV is Mono.
did you just called me a hardcore fan ! i'm glad to be
2 week boss battle
you could have made a whole game about that one fight right there
and that would be amazing
I knew all of these but did you know about the MGS 2 Raiden reference in MGS 3?
Madness1 Volgin's bitch?
Did you know you can play as Kojima in MGSPW? When you get him in one of the trucks all you need to do is put him in the soldiers and select him. He's wearing a mask though and has slow CQC
kenji harima you mean PO right because the name of the game is portable ops
What? I don't think we even have Kojima cameo in PO, there's one in PW though when we can recruit him as our staff member.
I just wanna say thanks for having the word "probably" in the title. I hate when UA-cam channels assume that I don't know something. Rant ovdr
Konami should have let Kojima do whtever he wants. his ideas were insane and cool at the same time.
2:41 There is no David Emmerich, just Hal. His father's name is Huey. David is Solid's real name.
That's almost as bad as the time someone on this channel referred to a GPU's physical construction as "architexture"
Great video, really makes me wanna replay them!
i knew every single fact, but im not going to give it a dislike because its well edited.
a couple of facts: huey's nickname was given to him by strangelove, this name is a reference to the science fiction film "silent running", which means that both him and his son got their names from sy-fy flicks. also, he married 2 english women (which is somewhat creepy).
david, or solid snake, is infact blond like his twin brother eli, or liquid snake, and their mother eva, he dyed his hair that way to destinguish himself from his brother in the first mgs
I can't believe I've never heard about the dream sequence and mini game in MGS3 before. Gotta look it up now
***** its not in the remastered HD version though or at least not in the vita version
***** only worked in the original snake eater/subsistance, not hd
***** Casul
+Megat Harith I had it happen to me in game before when I played it... lucky me.
+Megat Harith you need to play the original ps2 version for that, it was removed in all other versions
That dream sequence... I've played that game at least once every year for 11 years now, and I'm still learning things about it.
The End at the end. Nice little touch man
One of my favorites is the unknown TRUE use of the three boxes. There are only 3 trucks with accessible beds. There are also only 3 boxes. It just so happens that those trucks are all parked in the areas of the game where the boxes shipping slips are marked to go to. Yes, if you get in a specific box and sit in the back of the truck completely still for about ten seconds, the game itself will ship you to the location specified on the box's shipping slip. Making a lot of the back tracking a little more bearable.
The guy who gets launched into space in 2001 space odyssey is named frank. kind of appropriate considering that both frank's in 2001 & MGS are both only able to live because of advance technology and yet both are killed by it.
subbed because I love the narrator's voice
Another fun fact for your number one. If you save your game but come back 5 days later, rather than a full week. There will be a different cutscene where Snake is napping and gets sniped and caught. You will then be naked and put in a jail cell back at the research facility... for some reason your items are right beside you and the door is open.
+akiflyer any links to that claim ?
+SlayeCohen I've experienced it too. i was confused as hell. failed to defeat him, save the game, and play in the next saturday and then, it happened
Amirul Saipulovich Syafiq That's awesome! But i can't find a single video here on YT about that, can you post or send me a link of that happening ?
SlayeCohen Here. The first cutscene.
/aJRyyLvwIKo
Amirul Saipulovich Syafiq i'm getting error 404 =/ thanks anyway ^^
That train gibberish comes up in pretty much every mgs game to date. Not just gray fox. Cool stuff
Fun Fact: According to fan theory Guy Savage (the MSG3 dream sequence) was reworked into Nanobreaker. They both share the same game style and Nanobraker was released a few months after MGS3
Now I didn't know that the battle with The End was suppose to be a two week boss battle, but now that this is out there someone is going to get the idea and run with it.
damn, these auto subtitles are actually very good and its the same that he says
when psycho mantis tries to read your mind in mgs4 was a really cool moment.
the least known fact about metal gear is that in some older versions of the game or if you could not plug your controller in to port 2 because it was damaged, psycho mantis could be beaten by destroying the statues within the room. A failsafe on a ps1 game to prevent soft locking. Now that is ahead of its time even for today.
In Metal Gear Solid 2 we met Iroquis Plisken who was really Solid Snake under cover.
The word "Iroquois" means "rattlesnake" and also "real (or solid) snake" in some Native Algonquian languages.
Great Video, it was really fun.
It is also possible to kill The End after a cutscene where you see him in a wheelchair. That's how I got rid of him.
One last thing you kinda missed, in the phantom pain, Huey Emmerick wears the exact replica of Kojimas favorite blue stylish glasses
I knew all of these things, except for the blood one, and the 2 week boss battle one. Seriously, sometimes I think Kojima is nuts lol.
Those were awesome facts! As a huge fan of Metal Gear - thank you! :)
Fun fact. In MGS1 leading to the Grey Fox fight the corpse leaning against the wall is holding a USP. The only other one found through out the game other than the one you have.
Wow there are actually a few of these i didnt know. And as a HUGE MGS fanboy for many years, that's damn near unbelievable...
Number 6 and 1 were the only ones I learned of that years ago. I was playing on a mono TV when I first played MGS1, and as for how I learned about about The End dying of old age....Got grounded for 10 days before I could play MGS3 again. I saved my game at the fight with The End because it was getting late.
Kojima = GOD
Look at those ideas that he wants to put in the game......
True artist
there is in Peace Walker a moment when a secret code said: Kojima is God XD
+NGR450 Also in MGS4 after defeating Beauty Mantis, and after the actual Psycho Mantis explodes press X and it will say Kojima is god.
Also in the credits it says
"Voice of God Hideo Kojima"
Ha! Is this your own channel Jake? I never knew! I always liked you the most out of those other two guys from that other channel I forgot the name of. It's so on the tip of my tongue.
Hideo Kojima also wanted a sniper fight in Metal Gear Solid 2 that lasted two weeks, but the idea was scrapped due to it just not quite fitting in with the rest of the game, as well as the whole "two week boss fight" thing. As the video may tell, the idea for a sniper fight lasting two weeks was then moved over to Metal Gear Solid 3, but retooled to be, y'know, not absolutely crazy.
8 The Guy Savage dream easter egg was actually going to get its own standalone game, but was later canned. It also should be noted that this easter egg is only in the PS2 version of MGS3.
Good list. Actually a good amount of facts that I didn't know, so huzzah!
Okay, before I even watch the video, I just wanna say THANK YOU for saying "probably didn't" in the title. It's annoying when channels say "you didn't know." It's almost like they're insulting our intelligence outright.
I'm surprised you didn't add any peace walker bits
Wow, never realized how crazy Kojima was.
man
you forgot one very important curiosity that many doesn't know
in metal gear solid 1, when you fight psycho mantis, he reads your mind, breaking the fourth wall
What's better than the time concept for The End's battle is the fact that one of the first times you see him, you can snipe him in the head early on and skip the battle altogether XD
But... you have to watch for his wheelchair; when he explodes, so does the wheelchair, and one of the wheels flies right into you and knocks you back trough the previous segment of the game (you know, where you go to a black screen and load up the next area you run through).
Just move out of the way the instant you snipe The End, and you'll be fine
I know this is a very late comment, just now started watching your channel, but this could've included the fact that Kojima originally did not even want David Hayter playing as Snake for Mgs3 & 4. Everyone's favorite voice actor was basically supposed to be laid off & replaced but the new actor (forgot) refused the role. Also the justified reasoning behind Kiefer Sutherland in Mgs5.
David Hayter screenwrote X-men and X2, debuted in the direction business for Wolves, and acted as Guyver (Sean Barker) in the Guyver movies.
Shoutout to the photo of Mike on Jake's monitor
fact number with the old sniper - strange, but this is why we love Kojima.
This is awesome lol and i had some errr issues with my MG1 when i had it the first time haha. Yes i actually had a black and white TV i know right but it was bought i nthe early 80s and passed down to me when i was a kid... so i kept it. There was a part when you had to plant C4 on the walls that we're a different color. For me... the walls we're all the same color so i had to plant C4 around the entire basement level untill i found it. And the second problem i had was when i bought the game i got it 'chipped' wich means it was not a legal copy i payed like 5£ for it and yeah it was fine. People still did that back on ps1. BUT the moment came when i had to check on the back of the CD CASE for a codec.... so yerrrr i kinda had to go thru every single codec number 1 by 1 to find the right frequency lol well there was other stuff but i will just leave it there hope this is funny to you. Thanks if you read it.
4:06. Where/when is that from? I don't remember seeing that anywhere. Graphics look modern so maybe tpp?
David Hayter said when he was coming up with Snakes voice he looked at the back story and mechanics and figured his should should reflect his rugged lifestyle. So he came up with a voice that reflects Snakes smoking habit. (That and drinking.)
I remember one time playing the original Metal Gear on the Playstation... I must have been playing for about 12 hours or so. The communicator came up and someone said, "Don't you think you should take a break?!" It scared the shit out of me! I haven't heard of it happening to anyone else, so I'd be curious to know if anyone else has experienced that?
All this stuff was in Lemmino's channel too. I don't know who's came first, but this is not a statement. I like both these channels.
you can also kill the end before the battle by sniping him when he's on a wheelchair sleeping while the boss, ocelot and volgin are done talking after a cinematic
Here's a fact some may already know and others may not, Meryl Silverburgh from Metal Gear Solid originally first appeared in another Kojima game that was only released in Japan called Policenauts.
there was even a stage where it was possible to take down "the end" earlier.
I can almost hear Rob from Playstation Access sprinting towards this.
gotta love Kojima
A 2 week survival boss sniping battle? Dear god..... Yes....
The Polyphony Digital logo on the Gran Turismo 2 discs smelled of burning rubber if you rubbed it
In Metal gear solid 4 when fighting Mantis had a glitch thing. If you were on an HD TV that told you the current output coming in your TV would go from 1080p to 480i.
I feel like a genius for knowing all of these. I only really got into Metal Gear 5 weeks ago.
8. The dream sequence was an easter egg for a then being developed new entry into the Nightmare Circus games. It was never finished though.
Man, I wish that The End battle was 2 weeks long. That would be awesome! I mean, it's the best boss battle in videogame history.
I like how these "you didn't know" videos are mostly researched and then act like they knew the whole time
Kojima " I want a disc that blows up if it's game over"
The fact that MGS is sooo out of the box is really the biggest reason why I love this game so much ..... and at the same time it's mabey the most realistic game existing
wait, that one of the train stations wasn't in mgs2? when you are naked and major calls you to say it
whoaaa #1 thats freaking awesome
And the Emmerichs are Hal and Huey. David is Solid Snake... 😂
Why did you make #1 the end battle trick. By now its just as well known as the "plug into slot 2" trick with psycho mantis.
Isn't the mini-game from MGS3's dream sequence another game?
I can't remember the name, but it looks so similar to something....
Too many comments regarding the names of the characters. Consider this post the final confirmation;
*Hal's dad is Huey, the 2001: A Space Odyssey Reference was in regards to Hal and David.*
*David is Solid Snake's real name, further confirmed by him sharing it with Meryl at the end of MGS1.*
*Naked Snake who would later become Big Boss is named Jack, it is not John. When he is speaking to paramedic, he explains that names mean nothing on the battlefield, when she persists he says it is John Doe. John Doe is the name given to a dead man who has yet to be identified. This is further confirmed when she states her name is Jane Doe, the female equivalent. Jack is his real name and also the one that he goes by, the Boss calls hims Jack immediately which would mean that it is what he has gone by before. The reason he tells Ocelot it is John is a shout back to the reference with paramedic in the game, nothing else.*
A smell-o-vision disc drive does sound pretty cool. A Mario game would smell like mushrooms, a Sonic game would smell like chili dogs, and an EA game would smell like sweet, sweet money
I'm wondering if Kojima's idea of having a 2-week boss fight was something he truly wanted to implement, or just one of the ideas that never came to pass. I mean, game developers explore a ton of options and scenarios when creating a game. They don't simply come up with the entire concept to the last detail at once and then get to work on creating the product without changing any of the original ideas, or coming up with new ones. I assume there's a lot of brainstorming going on, so back to the original question, I'm wondering if the 2-week boss fight was just one of the many ideas that have most likely been passed around, or something Kojima truly wanted to add to the game like the video portrays it.
2:32 Is That Raiden in the red picture?.... That's sad and scary.. I would love to know more about that picture.
Two weeks? Challenge accepted
The thing is that Otacon's father is named Hughey. David is Solid Snake's name.
Another one is that you can kill The End way before with a sniper when he is at the dock, you will end up fighting a platoon of men instead.
I seem to remember not having to save and turn off for a week for The End to die of old age. First time i played that part he passed away. Just took me forever to find him, and I'm positive i didn't turn off for a week. But i did kill the bird.
If you wait less then a week in the end boss, snake will fall asleep and end will capture him
The ending of Metal Gear 4 was originally going to be very different, Snake and Otacon would have be executed as terrorists, which would have made the 'Here's to You' song far more impacting.
i came across the dream sequence on accident one day lol. I was like wtf is this? wheres my metal gear save? lololol
you didn't have to wait a week to easily defeat the end, you only had to change the date on your computer
My favourite series !!! I knew 4 of these facts! DAMN,THESE GAMES ARE AWESOME!!!
the tiny robot that follows you in snatcher is the same one in mgs 4.
you could also gun the end down right after a cut scene
