    J Dilla Inspired Techniques
    In this vid, we examine a one of my all time favorite beats from the legendary J Dilla where he uses a slick variation in his drum pattern. Dilla could play drums and it's evident in his drum programming especially during the time he was mainly known as Jay Dee. The technique is demonstrated on my MPC 2000xl but the concept can be transferred to any hardware or software.
    This is only one of many J Dilla techniques, but if you listen to his production on Busta Rhymes song called "The Shining" from the album "The Coming", u will come across so many dope techniques just from that one song alone. The spirit of Dilla will continue to live on and shout out to Ma Dukes for creating such a legacy thru her son Dilla Dawg aka The King of Beats!

    Very informative tutorial! I'm enjoying all of your Dilla inspired techniques videos!!! What my ear is hearing, is a fairly constant snare/clap & hhat, but what's contributing to the overall funk/feel, is the kick. The kick is what has the very 'free' feel, and lends the beat it's J Dilla signature.

      Another great new resource is Melodics, Think of it as guitar hero but you use a MIDI controller. Guys like Jeremy Ellis, Jazzy Jeff, and Gas Lamp Killer all contribute tutorials that you play a long with + Classic breaks such as the Amen and Think break. It's subscription based, like 9 bucks a month. Originally I thought it'd be cheesy, but it has made improvements in my timing and finger independence.
      Also i recommend watching actual drummer tutorials.

    • @beatmarketproductions7686
      @beatmarketproductions7686 6 років тому +2

      skills823 the way I create drum patterns is following the rhythm. What this tutorial is saying is your basic triple and swing method. Its a common method used by jazz drummers. Listen to jazz drummers and get a feel. I created my own drum pattern signature buy listening to old jazz records. I been producing since 92 and still use this method. When I make beats you can tell I did it vs one of my boys and so on.

    For anyone who actually has a problem with the snare time - just count 16s instead of 8s, it's on 16. Same place where the first kick is on the classic boom bap thing he starts playing after - B-boom boom bap. the "B" is on 16 and the "boom" after is on 1.
    Of course there doesn't need to be a rule, you could offset just this extra drum with triplets or something else, depends on the rest of the beat.

    Still Shining was the song that made me open up the tape cover to read the production credits. Didn't know who this Jay Dee guy was at all, but i thought whoever it was lost his mind. This ain't no 2, 4, 8 or even 16 bar loop! Who does this??? Even how the song starts, the snare comes in on the 1 (on the 1...), like what kind of intro was that??? But it was crazy funky as hell! I would eventually learn more about this crazy guy during the ummah years. Then I lost my mind when i learned that this dude had a group. All production by this Jay Dee cat on one album? Hey my man I’m REALLY diggin into Dilla right now and trying my best to absorb as much ea 90’s / early 2000 Boom Bap knowledge that I can. I very much appreciate all the insights and time and effort you put into this. I would love to pick your brain on a more one on one basis. I’ve got all the gear in the world and I’m eager to learn. Hope you are well. Peace
