  • You can cycle from Surbiton in south west London to Teddington over the river in about 25 minutes, entirely on quiet streets, paths, and protected cycled lanes.
    The route is three and a half miles long (5.6km) and makes use of a protected cycleway on Portsmouth Road, the newly filtered Lower Ham Road, and a good section of the Thames path.
    By public transport the journey takes at least half an hour, is by bus, and slower than cycling.

    Finished right by my office. That bridge is generally fine during the week and it’s a much nicer route into Kingston than following the main road bridge. It can get a bit more congested in the summer but mainly because people stop to take photos of the boats.

    Good on you for filming this on a sunny weekend. I hate cycling shared paths at the weekend and feel glad I can do my riding during the week with fewer pedestrians and dogs.

    A great little video. I agree with the other comments about Lower Teddington Road. Another alternative is to cross over Kingston Bridge (cycle lane and then shared pavement) and turn right along Park Road and through the Hampton Wick Gate of Bushy Park along the path that follows Sandy Lane. Watch out for deer though!

    when you come into the market place in kingston, i foind it easier to go left through the market and join the road up by john lewis, there's fewer pedestrians to navigate :)
    i carry on upto Chisiwick through Richmond Kew, (avoiding the thames path from teddington to ham house and then Richmind to kew as it get pretty muddy and off road)

    Ay you finally made it to my end of town. You can just go left at Kingston Market Place then over Kingston Bridge. There's a back road that takes you to Teddington lock which is quiet enough

    I used to cycle along the thames path in Kingston, not sure if its still allowed given the new cycleway next to it now.

    • @Londoncycleroutes

      As far as I can tell it is for pedestrians only past the town centre yeah, but there’s no shortage of routes

      @@Londoncycleroutes Whether its on the thames path or through the town centre its pretty congested. Kingston isn't particulary friendly to cyclists.

    A better alternative, on the market place instead of going right, go left through Thames St, across Kingston bridge and go through the very quiet Lower Teddington rd, much faster and far less pedestrians.

    • @Londoncycleroutes
      @Londoncycleroutes  2 роки тому

      That does look alright, do you tend to just go around the roundabout at the west end of the bridge?

    • @k0023382
      @k0023382 2 роки тому +1

      @@Londoncycleroutes Yes, that roundabout is usually busy however we are talking around 100m of traffic. Bear in mind you always take the bike line on the bridge. If going with the boys walk the distance taking the traffic-light just before the roundabout until you reach Lower Teddington rd (less walking that Teddington bridge)

    • @niallisthefuture
      @niallisthefuture 2 роки тому +1

      Yep, this is IMHO a much better way.
      Lower Teddington Rd is slightly less scenic, but still very enjoyable to cycle down.
      (lovely architecture)
      You can then get to Twickenham station by joining Tower Road > Radnor Road > Grove Avenue.
      Quite a nice cycle altogether!

      @@niallisthefuture I quite often cycle Lower Teddington Road in the opposite direction - from Teddington, into Ferry Road, then before the footbridge right into Broom Road which leads into Lower Teddington Road. Usually pretty quiet - at least until just before Kingston Bridge... Thames TV used to have their studios somewhere along this strech of road, though I've yet to discover exactly where!

  • @NivagSwerdna

    My daughter commutes that route regularly, although the Portsmouth Road cycleway cost gazillions of pounds it's dead handy for the cyclists!

      You missed a trick... turn down to the river and cycle along there and under the bridge... you can completely avoid the market place.

      the Thames was considered biologically dead in the 50's, now you even have sharks, you have Seal's and over 100 species of fish. The Thames in the Roman times would had looked Muddy, it's just a muddy river. The Thames is actually classed as the cleanest river in the world that goes through a major city
