      On the stretch along the Embankment and I believe under Hungerford bridge there is a cycle counter which gives you an idea of how much that route is used. I used it a lot when I lived in Lewisham for practically any journey going west and there is always cycle traffic using it.

    I started cycling about a year ago. I've lived in London for almost 20 years and I was always too afraid to cycle in London. When 2020 hit and the infrastructure started changing for the better, I eventually felt confident enough to give it a go. Now, I commute by bike every day. Thanks to your videos, I've really seen a lot of routes I might take just for the fun of it. I live in Kentish Town so if there's more routes near there you could do, it would be interesting! Thanks!

      If you want a fun ride at the weekend, get the train north from Kentish Town to St Albans and then you can ride traffic free accross to Hatfield and get the train back to Kings Cross, or go even further across to Hertford, most off road or quiet streets.

      It's a good idea and a few other people have requested this as well actually - I've experimented a little bit but not found a way that works... I might do one that flashes up. A bit redundant now as its a year later but its much quicker going under the motorway at the Green Man roundabout coming out onto Cambridge Road which is parallel to the Eastern Avenue. Its a quiet road with green cycle lanes each way and takes you directly to Wanstead station. It completely cuts out Selsdon and Felstead Roads, to which I am aware you may of included in the video as an alternative extension to this route.

    • @Londoncycleroutes
      @Londoncycleroutes  5 місяців тому

      Looks like a reasonable way to do it! Maybe not quiet video quality as it’s still an A road and the lanes don’t have protection but I’d probably be happy to go that way

    I've cycled through the Mansell street junction daily during rush hour for years as part of my commute (although going straight along Whitechapel High street, not turning from Mansell street) and it's very common to find drivers have queued through the junction at that time of day. It's an annoyance but not too much of a real problem for someone like me, but I'd be reluctant to take a child through there. I hope one day they'll improve that junction.

    • @Londoncycleroutes
      @Londoncycleroutes  2 роки тому

      Yes I think I share your assessment exactly - generally fine but at rush hour especially it blocks up and a bit dodgy for kids which is a shame. I don’t know if you saw the Waterloo to Whitechapel video but that was shot not at rush hour and it worked beautifully there so I wonder if it’s fine off peak

    • @Ladadadada
      @Ladadadada 2 роки тому +1

      @@Londoncycleroutes I watch most of the videos you make in the east end. Even for someone who has lived and cycled here for 10 years there's still plenty of opportunity for you to find a gem of a route that I've overlooked or that was only created recently. Or just for the incidental history lessons.
      Before the Mansell street cycle lane was constructed I would take Trinity Square, Cooper's row, Crutched Friars and Jewry street to get between CS3 and CS2. That route is mostly contraflow lanes and has no traffic lights but can be a bit hairy during the morning rush hour from drivers turning without seeing you and pedestrians crossing the road without looking. Still, it's a reasonable option if you're making another video out that way to keep it fresh.

    Small clarification on the traffic light near Mile End.
    At 19:16, the red traffic light is for right turns only - cycles have a light phase to cut across traffic and go through Mile End park.
    Going straight isn't a direct bypass of the light, as there's actually a traffic light for bycicles at 19:17, which was green for you.

    I'm unlikely to be cycling in London any time soon, but these videos are interesting for seeing some of the details of the London the visitor never sees, so thanks. (I've been there twice or three times, depending on how you count, so at that rate, maybe I'll make it there again some time in the next ten years. If I do, I'll be sure to bring a heat wave with me. "I always bring warm weather with me" when I travel. Either that, or this global warming thing is real.)
    I'll try to remember to comment on other videos you do. If I had a request it would be something like St Albans to Potters Bar (or maybe St Albans anticlockwise). That's just because last time I visited friends at St Albans, and ran and walked all over the area, so this would just be idle curiosity on my part. From your point of view, "hemi-semicircles" might become a next phase one day, though? At some point you'll have covered most of the radial routes through the City, so then it's a matter of seeing where "outer circles" go.

    The only cycling infrastructure Bromley council seem to have heard of is a green-painted stripe along the gutter that is full of rocks and broken glass and stuff!

Look forward to the unbroken nights, while I look forward to more tours of London cycle infrastructure as a new subscriber. The cycle counter certainly emphasises the space efficiency of building protected lanes and modal switch features.
    The response of the Wolesely van driver that overtakes you at @20.08 and then waits beyond you passing the junction ahead at @20:15 didn't fit the excellent narrative, so I'm mentioning it here as an example of the benefits and value of the network I would have used regularly, had I not changed jobs in 2015.

    At 27:01 there it is. Lol! You should apply different colour filters for Walthamstow borough (blue) and other boroughs (red) -just as they do in the movies where it is bluish in USA and reddish in Mexico.

      @@Londoncycleroutes Yes, you pointed that out.
      You should definitely make a cycling video of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea with a reddish video colour scheme as a form of symbolic protest against the poor cycling infra (additionally, doing so would be really funny and an inside joke).

    Great video, just a quick note on the CYCLOPS junction: they don't slow down traffic because the cyclists go at the same time as the pedestrians, so when cars are already stopped for pedestrians there's no time loss.

    I don't think I've been further than Whitechaple! I've done the Thames bluelines loads, once to the end at east india dock, where I was fascinated to see creatures eat my banana in the water.... Okay I just googled as that sounded nuts, FISH EAT BANANAS :O :O :O they loved it. I've not done that connecting corner so will need to try that and reach stratford or wandsworth flats. Idea for video, list the boroughs best to worst.But given I'm in Chelsea wherever I move to will be better, but it is central and it is flat so... x

    Great long ride. It was like listening to a podcast.
    I noticed you passed several hire bikes on the C2. Could you answer a question for me? Do you know if the saddles on the hire bikes are easy to adjust? i would like to use them next time I am in the uk and wonder about getting the right fit for my short legs.

    • @Londoncycleroutes
      @Londoncycleroutes  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, very easy! There’s a clip on the stem and you just unlock it and move the saddle up and down and then fasten the clip again. I really recommend the Boris bikes, they’re good fun and quite useful!

    Thanks for another great video and congratulations on the birth of your son. Some of this route is part of my regular commute, so I have a couple of observations:
    - if you go left when you get to Stratford (so round past the bus station and Stratford Centre) you can avoid the awkward wiggle round Morrisons by using Grove Crescent Road and crossing onto Manbey Grove.
    - a big problem with CS2, especially going west, is that it floods when it rains. There are places where the whole cycleway is under water. TfL really needs to get that sorted out.
    And if you want to do a video going further out east to Ilford, Gants Hill and beyond, go right on Odessa Road, then left on Wooder Gardens and through the other part of the Forest Gate LTN to join up with C16 on the south side of Wanstead Flats at Capel Road.

    • @Londoncycleroutes

      Very good points - I’ll have to have a play around on C2 east of Stratford, I have to admit I was winging it a bit for that section and wasn’t sure which was the smoothest way to go. This all sounds sensible

    I really dont like CS2 as an environment to cycle along, its just a horrible road to be involved with, heavily polluted, with low quality drivers, boy racers, gig economy delivery mopeds etc plus illegal electric mopeds on the cycleway etc, its also a major route for emergency vehicles, I always cut through Shoreditch/Victoria Park from central to Stratford, Ive done some exploring in the area between Whitechapel and Victoria Park and there seems to be lots of mini quiet ways round there buts its quite confusing as its mostly a jumble of identikit post-war estates.
