Cycling in London can look daunting... but if you know where to go it can be the best way of getting around the city. This channel posts videos of the best routes so you can see what they're like to ride.
🚲 A beautiful traffic-free winter cycle from Dalston to Holborn
You can cycle from Dalston in north east London to Holborn in Central London, entirely on quiet streets and protected cycle lanes.
The route is 5.7km long (3.5 miles) and makes use of Cycleway 1, Cycleway 27 and protected lanes on Gray's Inn Road, as well as various LTNs in Islington.

Excellent video, thanks for sharing. We need more of this everywhere
Thanks for watching and for the kind comment!
@Londoncycleroutes No problem. I remember staying in London back in the 60's and 70's. The city was always clouded with pollution from coal burning used for heating and excessive fumes. On some days, aircraft couldn't land at Heathrow all day due to smog and fog combined. Clean air in large mega cities is a blessing as it reduces terminal illnesses like lung cancer and heart disease. It's sad that the popular media now pushes a anti clean air agenda. Keep up the great work on the channel 👍
Thanks
Thank you kindly!
Thank you for all of your videos, and I hope you have a very happy new year.
Thank you, happy new year to you!
Another great video - looking forward to more in 2025. Have a great New Year.
Thank you! Happy new year!
Great video! Looking forward to more!
Thank you, plenty more where that came from!
No idea who lets cars into London because none can park anywhere and thousands of people suffer for every car polluting
Indeed!
Hello - what is the situation with cycle parking in London? I'm much further north and cycle for pleasure/exercise. One of the things I find frustrating is the standard of cycle parking at my destination. You often find the standard metal bars to lock a bike against but my bike was quite expensive and a determined thief will have it - or at least the wheels and saddle. Does London have anything better for the public user?
Not really to be honest, it’s usually the standard Sheffield stands for public parking. It would be great to have some more secure options but I’m not really aware of any. For residential there are lockable cycle hangers and workplaces often have locked cycle stores but not really the same thing of course
Hi, I’m in London, and I’m really struggling to find the bike lanes. I’ll keep looking, haha. I won’t hesitate to use your content to showcase them. It’s great to see some positive progress!
you're in the right place then! if you need more help than the videos check out the Safe Cycle London map which I link in the description below the video, it's a great resource
New video yay!!!! Just wanna show some appreciation for how smooth you incorporate the availability of the GPX file in you r voiceover, it's just so natural everytime.
Lmao thank you I’ve been working on my segues
2024 was the year I discovered your great channel and discovered Bike Hangars - I didn't know such things existed!
Have you got a spot in one? They’re great but in high demand!
Do you have a space in one? They’re great but in high demand!
@@Londoncycleroutes I don't live in London but I did ask the former mayor of Birmingham whether there were any in Brum and he said he had never heard of them. I'm sure there are areas in the West Midlands that could make use of them.
@@samc6223 definitely, they're great in cities where people might not have much storage for a bike in their own home (or if they live in a flat and dont want to cart a bike up stairs every day)
How does the TfL measure the popularity of a cycle route and how would I make my journeys more visible to them?
That’s a great question, I think the answer is pretty complicated but in short - I think it would be hard to game. Often you’ll see traffic monitors on the street - little cables stretched across the road connected to a little armoured box (that’s a computer). That means a street is being actively monitored, usually because someone has a scheme in mind. Some routes like the embankment have permanent counters. I think overall cycling figures are also based on traffic surveys and I’m not sure how they work but I think they’re a representative sample rather than literally asking everyone.
Always good knowledge to be had here......nice one.....👍🏽😊
Thanks a lot! Have a great 2025
A thought: This route takes in busy road at Covent Garden and the pedestrian congestion on Westminster Bridge, so have you ever compared the time taken doing this route v going via Blackfriars bridge? Checking with Ride with GPS this says the distance from St Pancras to Oval is the same by both routes and in both cases should take 28 mins. So is avoiding Westminster Bridge the key to a faster trip? Perhaps there's a race to be had against another vlogger?!
Yeah it’s probably fine - one thing about a Blackfriars is C6 actually bends quite far east in the north, and it also has quite a few traffic lights - but it’s probably a more comfortable route
Thanks
Thanks so much, very kind!
@@LondoncycleroutesThank you for these videos. I really think they are making a difference for us London cyclists.
Good to see pigeons making proper use of crossings provided (City Road, 7'05"). 🕊 Thanks for all your hard work and really looking forward to more output in 2025 *Have a Great New Year*
Thanks so much and thanks for tuning in this year and leaving enjoyable comments!
Great shout out for Vortex Jazz Club! Amazing spot.
It’s brilliant I need to go again
Any hope for any development in dinosaur areas of Bexley/Sidcup?
Honestly I’m not aware of anything but you never know
Great video! I really hope you're right about the Streatham Hill cycle lane as I feel like I've been waiting an eternity for it to happen
absolutely yeah! I think the current delay is TfL doesn’t want to dig io Streatham at the same time as Thames Water is digging up Tooting so they’re waiting for those works to finish before they start. It was meant to go ahead in November but it could be delayed again knowing what this lot are like
extremely positive news!
Keeping my fingers crossed
Douglas Adams made reference to the Balls Pond Road (he called it the Balls Pond Hyperlink) in "Life, the Universe and Everything" and the party where Trillian, Zaphod, and Arthur met was in Islington.
Good trivia thank you!
Nice route because apart from Kingsbury Road at the beginning, I have cycled this route. I checked my heat map in StatsHunters and I did follow C27. Have a happy new year.
Happy new year to you too!
Yee haw
Thanks so much!
Great video - shame there's no mention of Kensington High Street! Happy Christmas
That would be a real Christmas present!
This used to be my ride to work (or rather, starting from De Beauvoir). Lovely ride
A great commute to have! happy new year
Nice commuter route. I didn’t realise there was a protected route on grays inn road now. Incidentally I cycled along C10 today and the cycle lane leading to the ha’penny hatch bridge, over Deptford creek, has re-opened (finally). Thames water have restored it to its original wider path it used to be on years ago. Just needs tidying up and some landscaping hopefully. Also the cycle lane on Deptford church st. looks like it could be finished soon.
Good intel thank you! I think all the super sewer works are wrapping up early this year now so that makes sense. I went down Deptford church street myself to have a look last week and it’s coming on nicely!
thanks! please do Hackney Wick to Oxford Circus!
Serendipity! I was just checking out artisan studios online in Hackney Wick before accessing this channel.
I’ll give that a go!
One of worst areas for cycling that I know in London is New Cross. A complete cycleway from Peckham to Greenwich would be great. The other dream would be the scrapped Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf bridge.
That bridge is essential- currently there’s no good cycling links across the river east of London Bridge!
Exactly the same route I took for many years - from 2005 onwards until I stopped working in the office in March 2020. Things have only improved since then though it was always a fairly decent route.
Hope it brings back memories!
Excellent video would loke to see a route from essex road to Alexander palace.👍
I’ll give it a go!
My first time viewing this channel. I live well outside the smoke so it's good to see the boroughs are taking up the mantle of improving cycle infra - as Sadiq has no interest in cycling. I'm still in the mindset of when Boris was mayor seeking re-election and pushed massive changes through - after a huge push from campaign groups maybe 10-12 years ago. Although I think Brexit was inevitable, in a way it's a shame for London that the EU vote happened at that time. London lost its best mayor, who decided national politics were more important. OK, he helped move Brexit over the line, but as PM he was a disaster!
Welcome to the channel and thanks for commenting!
🤙🏽⚡️🤟🏽⚡️👌🏽
🙏
Thank you, nice Mr. Mayor. Keep up the good work.
Haha
Any chance of a south/north route from Clapham Junction/western Battersea area to around Paddington station?
tricky one but I'll make a note and see what I can do!
Great route mate. I cycle from Ponders End high street to Mount Pleasant sorting office every day and the last part of the journey is through Colbrooke way. Happy New Year and thanks 👍
You must be fit as a fiddle damn!
that's a pretty hefty daily cycle! happy new year
Yes every Tuesday to Saturday going to work but I take the train home from Liverpool Street station.
Very familiar to me as my username suggests. That reopened Kingsbury Road bridge is a real boon (goes over both Mildmay and Windrush lines, freight and deep down the HS1/Eurostar!). The crossing at Southgate Rd is OK IMO and a big improvement over the dangerous mini-roundabout before. I usually brave the brief dogleg off Elizabeth Ave on New North Road to get to the start of Basire and then into Prebend. If you go north on Noel Road not Gerrard you go by the flat where Jo Orton was killed by his lover...look out for the plaque up high. There are also various traffic free back streets in Clerkenwell without using Grays Inn Road but can be a bit mazy.
when I saw your username commenting on the other video I'd already recorded this with the Vortex and the beginning and I thought you might notice it! and yeah paralleling Grays Inn Road is perfectly doable, I mostly just wanted to show off the lanes!
Thank you for all the videos in 2024.
thanks a lot of tuning in this year! always appreciate your comments
Happy New Year! 🎉
happy new year!
I've often wondered about the name of Balls Pond Road, now I know, thanks :-) Do you have an explanation for Pleasure Pit Road in Ashtead which I often use :-)
that's quite a name haha... if I ever cycle down that way I'll have to look it up!
That was fun. I do a very similar route when I go to visit my daughter in Dalston. I take the train to Waterloo with my Brompton. The southern end of my route is slightly different but I then merge into your route. At first I thought the girl on the bike you referred to was my daughter :-)
hah that would have been a coincidence! glad the route is tried and tested by others too
She was hustling! It was only after my going back to get a better look at her machine, and those of others later in the vid, that it became apparent they were riding e-bikes. Although the e-bikes have become available here in Toronto to buttress the already highly successful bike rental fleet, 'civilians' (not couriers) don't usually travel that fast on them. The standard rental bikes weigh about 42 pounds, btw. Yikes, I realise they've morphed the use of bike infrastructure for many, but even a push-bike half that weight is still on the heavy side for me. lol...I'm old-school I guess. I'm in it more for the elan of cycling than just transport utility. Great vid as usual! I always feel I'm a bit more back in London every time I watch.
@@stephensaines7100 they are heavy yes! I think they're a good thing but it can be annoying to move the dockless ones on the pavement
That’s the worst thing I find about winter cycling - cold fingers even though I double glove up. That and a streaming nose.
my partner gets this but one is enough for me! I think it depends on how your circulation is hah
Same, especially if they get wet early on. I need to invest in some waterproof gloves!
The very last bit of Gray's Inn is weirdly terrible, even though they 'fixed' some of the surface in the last few months - that lake at 10:12 is there about 50% of the time in winter, plus if you're turning right it's very dangerous to do so after the floating bus stop because the bus-stop obscures some of the drivers' view of you from behind, plus the left turning traffic gets a green before the right-turning traffic so you sometimes need to cross a live lane, plus the surface is still a bit uneven. Best option is currently to go into the car lane before the floating bus stop (around 10:08) (or dismount and walk that bit if you're not comfortable doing that sort of thing). Council really needs to sort that junction out, it's very heavily used by lime bikers who have no idea how to handle it safely as well as regular commuter cyclists.
yeah I really hope the permanent scheme and the junction improvements that'll come with the Clerkenwell Rd scheme make a difference, while welcome they're probably the worst protected cycle lanes Camden has done at the moment and as you say they get quite poor at the end
3:30 agreed, C! < 3
damnit I missed that one. it's a bug in Final Cut Pro that randomly crops my text to the first letter sometimes
@@Londoncycleroutes oh well, i don't think it really bothered anyone - and it made me comment/feed the algorithm, in any case : )

I will cry if streathamn hill cycle way happens
It’s basically ready to go though they’ve delayed it so much I wouldn’t be surprised if construction gets kicked back by another couple of months!
I would love to see the next one of these updates in 6 months👍🏼
I’ll see if there’s enough gear… might be annual but biannual could be doable
@Londoncycleroutes Happy New Year btw🎉
Depressing thought that Wandsworth may go blue again after a single term out before affordble housing shortage has been properly tackled by new council. I just wish the London councils would colour the cycle route tarmac a common colour as they do in Amsterdam, so we can all spot cycle routes rather than the confusion of signage and paint.
Yes a bit of consistency in the visual language would be nice
Always interested in hearing the opinions of avid cyclists. As a former van driver, I had no issue with charging to use the roads, also it meant my profits kept increasing as more and more people stopped driving into certain areas and so i could charge more, but I've always thought all toad users should pay to use it, even more so if special cycle lanes are being put in. Considering that only cycles (or its like) can use cycle lanes, would cyclists be happy to pay for its use? After all cycles also cause congestion, especially in my city where pavements, not roads are being taken away for them?
Cycling investment per head in England is about £10 a head a year... would I be happy to pay that, or even more to get better infrastructure? Sure no problem. I'm not sure levying it as a user charge would be a smart way to do it as the point of road user charging for cars is that it puts a price on causing congestion and reduces the number of journeys driven. whereas you'd want to encourage as many journeys as possible to be cycled as it means less traffic, less emissions, less need for land set aside for parking, etc. In principle I'd be happy to pay significant more than £7.60 a year to get improved infrastructure though
@Londoncycleroutes thats great and i totally get it. And I'm a big fan of increasing public infrastructure and making it free from a climate perspective but the reality is, tfl will now be charging electric cars so the emissions is not the reason for it but the non emission congestion is the issue. As a keen walker (i now only drive to get to my unit which is 45mins drive away in a rural area). I think its an interesting time and we need to be real that should we manage to reduce motor vehicle usage on the roads and get the majority of Londoners cycling, then either cyclists or everyone will be hit with the costs of maintaining the infrastructure. Thats why i support a phased in tax on all road users rather than slapped onto people at the last minute. Theres also the issue of raising costs to transport goods into London with higher fees for them to enter. Alot of these issues are things that people are ignoring or putting off until its too late to do something about.
@Londoncycleroutes i also think cyclists paying some form of usage tax would be a good counter to road users that complain about cyclists road usage. I'd also like to see safety changes like having to have helmets and lights but I'm sure that will come with time (the lack of lights on bikes is probably one of the biggest dangers I face when walking after dark, especially as we are forced to share the pavement.
Once again London getting all the money. How about a rural bus service that's more than one a day???
Cycle lanes and LTNs cost peanuts, the biggest barrier is political will. If you don’t like London this probably isn’t the channel for you
@@LondoncycleroutesThose who shout the loudest about poor public transport never actually use it. They are usually middle aged, frustrated with life in general and come on social media to vent their anger 😂😂
