🚲 An amazing new way to cycle from Greenwich to Westminster
Just note: NO photographs when cycling up Palace Green. Very pleasant, especially in the early AM, where the only people to talk to are the policemen/women at either end. Makes you want to become filthy rich.
Oh yes there are signs up
Brentford used to be the home of Brompton bicycles - am I right in thinking they have moved?
Greenford apparently, just up the road!
omg - i often cycle from Chiswick High Road to Acton Vale, and I've never tried Rusthall Avenue - I didn't even know there was a designated cycle route through there weirdly Google Maps (which normally uses designated cycle routes) doesn't ever suggest it
yeah its not an incredible designated route but I'd definitely take it over Acton Lane or The Avenue - hope it improves your commute!
An alternative route, also very pleasant, is to take the tunnel from Greenwich (which you are supposed to walk, technically), and go via Isle of Dogs. Your route has less stops though, and the path is generally wider for cyclists. Nice one though! C4 is probably the nicest bike path I have ever been on - killer vans excepted, of course.
Ah yes! I tend to avoid the foot tunnel on channel videos due to the dismount but I know a lot of people go that way and like it. Which way do you go through the Isle of Dogs out of interest, just on the main road? I think it’s possible to pick your way through the interior but it never looked that quiet to me
@@Londoncycleroutes I went around by the water, except where it was blocked and sent me to the quietish streets. I have only done it once, the other way. It is very nice, and people are noticeably less stressed than in central London! The cycle route is narrow in spots past Tower Bridge though.
I live in Acton, that’s it
Acton Man, the greatest hero of them all
Doesn't Acton Park still have a 5 mph speed limit for cyclists?
I can't see any signs personally, but tbh it's good to ride carefully in shared spaces anyway
There is a 5mph limit sign on one of the paths that cuts through the middle of the park from the 'roundabout' to the playground area at the east side. The path that makes up the parks share of C49 doesn't have a 5mph speed sign but care is required especially during morning commute times as there are school drop-offs at Ark Byron and the path gets very crowded.
@@intergalacticneil thanks, good to know!
Re: the crossing from C9 to get to the route through Fishers Lane, this will be at Windmill Rd which is a few hundred metres east of Clifton Gdns where you crossed. I understand there are issues putting the crossing at Clifton Gdns or Fishers Lane because of existing signals and bus stops. I think it will be a tiger crossing. No word yet as to when this will be done as it was part of a bigger package of works.
Interesting intel thanks! I know there’s already an official Cycleway routed that way but didn’t realise they had a crossing planned. A bit annoying that they’re doing it by Windmill as for routes like this coming from the west it means doubling back on yourself
@@Londoncycleroutes The 'official' route on the TfL website shows it going via Windmill Rd (C49). It is handier if going to the west but I don't know what direction the majority will be going. tfl.gov.uk/maps/cycle?intcmp=40402&intcmp=58492&intcmp=60683
@@Londoncycleroutes The route (C49) is shown going via Windmill Rd on cycle route map on TfL website.
@@mikerobutube yeah that's definitely the official route, I think there is signage already
Another great cycle route. Lovely weather again. Thanks.
Thanks, I’ve saved up a bunch of nice weather videos to keep us going over the winter haha!
@@Londoncycleroutes I got a dose of Vitamin D just watching.
@@stephensaines7100 haha don't we all need it!
Nice to see a ride I have done. I agree 100% about Welesley Road. I used the route north to Acton to get to C27 and then did the whole route across to Walthamstow. If you want a ride which shows the good (cycleway next to Wormwood Scrubs prison and east of Tottenham Court Road) and the bad (the bits in Kensington and Westmnister) of current TfL routes that is the one to follow. It would make for quite an extended play video.
Wow yeah that is a long way! I think I’ve personally (off camera) cycled all the bits of it and as you say the bits in RBKC and Westminster don’t really cut the mustard. But it would be nice to do as part of a ‘route review’ type thing if I can ever get around to it
hopefully we can see this properly extended the other way to kensington olympia soon!
One day the road will be taken off Kensington and Chelsea Council, as it's their councillors anti-cycling mindset which is the major problem.
Yes I think TfL has plans to do this with a proper bidirectional track… in the meantime the wand lanes aren’t awful
Brentfoooord!
up the Ford as they say!
*Another great video dude,* lovely route 🤙🏽⚡️🤟🏽⚡️👌🏽
Thanks very much!
thank you
The West Green/, Bruce grove area is a complete maze. I live nearby and have had to go on Google maps to get my bairings, esp going over Tottenham way!
I hope the video helps!
@@Londoncycleroutes Do tfl or the local council contact you about cycle routes and how it can be improved? a few simple signs makes a huge difference for example!
@@mossy199 pretty much, sometimes they do engage! I think there are plans to sign a cycleway with way finding through there but they're waiting for the Haringey LTNs to be made permanent there before committing as if the trial resulted in them taking the LTN out it wouldnt be a very good cycleway basically
Hello, I’m in the USA and never been to England. But I love this cycle trips and all the info you give about the area. One question. Why do some street have the zig zag painted on the streets? Thanks
Welcome and thanks for tuning in! The zig zags mean no parking/waiting and overtaking. You usually see them on the approach to pedestrian crossings where stopping near the crossing would block sight lines and so out people crossing the road in danger. There’s also a version that’s commonly used outside schools to try and keep the street immediately outside them clear
@ thanks so much. Makes sense
I just came back from London, visiting my daughter who's going to school there and living in Camden. I would love to see some routes hitting the tourist sites, one maybe crossing all the popular brigdes, one loop for a good nighttime loop through London. I left my Brompton at my daughters flat, so I'll be back to do more riding. Are you on Strava?
I’m going to see what I can do on more touristy videos! I guess one issue is there are so many different points of interest it’s hard to know where to start. Maybe I should get better at pointing them out!
Glad you said that about Parliament Square. The cycle lanes are a mess. It’s even worse coming East from Millbank and trying to go up Whitehall.
Yeah getting sent around the houses is really annoying!
Unreal route dont know south London too well. McGlynns still closed. Its one of my fav pubs in London. Hopefully reopens without a boring brewery refurb. I use that shortcut alot (off at farrington)
Yeah gutted to hear it hasn’t reopened as I thought!
I had a think of the "fast route" i would have taken... Hyde park - Baker street - old street - liverpool street. You're route avoids the killer hill up to Angel. (never easy on a fixie) Excellent work sir 🫡 It is quite a buzz cycling through that tunnel.
Thanks very much glad you enjoyed!
Those newer soulless blocks on Enthrone Road are awful.
Personally think the development around there is pretty nice!
Each to their own. 👍🏻
@@gawl0720 I realise they're not for everyone!
Another great video. Still bothers me how many other cyclists on yur videos jump the red lights. Thanks for making this video.
I’m wondering whether the guy at Akerman Road knew he was supposed to Be following the light on the left and not the right or whether it was an error
The delightfully-named "Enthrone Road" at 5:43 is actually Eythorne Road!
Ooops, that looks like autocorrect playing havoc during editing!
Ooops, that looks like Autocorrect causing havoc during editing!
Thanks
Thank you very much very kind!
Very creative route
Thank you 🙏
That’s another great video. I’m struggling to find a good bike route from Hyde Park to Ealing Common. Do you have any suggestions?
Unfortunately not really! TfL wanted to build cycle lanes on Holland Park Ave a few years back but Kensington and Chelsea strung them along and blocked at the last minute. They would have helped a lot… Ealing needs to get it together in their main roads too. honestly it’s a main road job!
I suppose if you don’t mind a detour you could follow Cycleway 27 out of Victoria Gate and along Craven Hill, Porchester Gardens, Talbot Rd etc…. Not great but it can get you as far as Acton park on non awful roads, then go Uxbridge Road for the last bit of
This channel has been great but I am now in need of a Manchester equivalent as I make the move up the country. Anyone have any recommendations?
I know someone does them for Brum and I swear someone said they were going to do Manchester but I can’t find myself! Would be interested to track down
@@LondoncycleroutesMuch appreciated!
Hi, That did not 'feel' like your normal level of 'quiet and protected cycle routes' Not a complaint, just an observation
Interesting, which bits do you think were in need of improvement?
@@Londoncycleroutes There were 5 incidents during the ride. 3:09, 3:18, 4:30, 5:20 and 8:06. The first 3 feel like they have been caused by the calming, taking cars away from the area, making it appear more attractive to drive poorly. I think a rider needs to be more proficient for this route than many of your other routes. Please note I'm not a cyclist, I have ridden, and also used to ride motorbikes, but some time ago, it could be I'm reacting with more caution (fear) than would (should) be normal.
@@stephenlee5929 interesting, yeah there was certainly some dodgy driving! feedback definitely noted for future videos
why have you speeded it up???
I speed up all my videos. It keeps them a bit more manageable in length
@Londoncycleroutes ok cheers
At Borough Market, with Redcross Way, isn't that the quickest way out of the one-way system in the market? Always seen delivery vans coming out of there. It's probably too busy and narrow to have safe a cycle contraflow. When I cycle to Borough Market from south, I usually go in via Bermondsey Street and Tooley Street and under the bridge on Montague Close. It's unhelpfully narrow in a couple places, but I've never had a problem there as it tends to be quieter. Some very interesting buildings there to enjoy as well. Also used Great Guildford Street and Park Street to get in. Park Street has a short protected cycle lane at one part where it's narrow. Would be a bit of a detour from Union Street, but might be better for some than dismounting and walking down a narrow pavement with vans coming the other way.
Interesting, that sounds like a good way though I’m never sure about routing people on the western end of Tooley Street - probably alright in practice though! It’s a shame St Thomas’s St isn’t two way for cycling and that you can’t go straight ahead into the market there as a bike (at least I don’t think legally, it might be physically possible)
London is beautiful all year round but autumn is even more special! Thanks again for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
A really interesting and gloriously autumnal route! Cheers! Agree this is probably the best way north from Brixton... I used to always use a very similar trajectory to get to London Bridge when I was in the area. Have to say Akerman Rd was always the most challenging bit for me back then tho, and also Barrington due to its poor surface 😂 More recently I've used that very same Redcross Way option to reach the market but always coming the other direction on C5, it's really handy. Maybe it was a key exit route for trucks back in the wholesale market days 🤔
Yes that a particularly good point about the Barrington Road surface, it’s awful! At least it’s wide so you swerve the craters hah
I've used this route and variations a lot over the past couple of decades. The cycle gate and (I think) a narrowing of Akerman at the junction with Mostyn Road has calmed things down considerably. Tend to find the biggest issues are when crossing Vassall Road into Foxley: occasionally drivers overtake very aggressively as you are pulling away from the lights, usually when you are moving into the centre of the lane to avoid the door zone of the cars inevitably parked there.
@@jonners7061 Glad to hear it! Alas I've not had a chance to pass through since the cycle gate went in so will hopefully get round to trying it soon and witnessing how much nicer it is now. I used to just detour via Minet Rd and Claribel without even thinking but of course the junction at Lilford Rd is another story altogether 😂
@@jonners7061 yeah that's absolutely been my experience too - that junction with Foxley is really horrible. I wish they'd put a contraflow on Patmos too it would be so much more intuitive
Biked parts of this today! If you go through Southwark Park (enter on the left at 11:42) to get between Surrey Quays station and Jamaica road, and connect it with C14, you can see the Bermondsey Wall / a lovely stretch next to the Thames. Thanks for the video.
I’ll have to check it out thank you!
Would love to hear your thoughts on a route from Greenwich to Hackney Wick! Probably would mean going through the Greenwich foot tunnel though
Yeah tricky one - it would probably look a bit like the Hackney to Canary Wharf video I did plus the Greenwich foot tunnel- I’ve not worked out a great way get through the Isle of Dogs without traffic though as the Thames path is interrupted and the main road is pretty horrible
@@Londoncycleroutesyes, agreed. I was cycling down that way the other day and was close passed by a speeding motorist. Not the easiest route for this channel at the moment
Another good quiet route. I have cycle some of the route in parts.
It’s a good ‘un!
Quick update! Today I cycle along the Thames path from Thames Barrier towards the O2. The whole area of Southern Park @19:17 with the contradictory signs has newly painted C14 along that sesction of path. Those no cycling signs are deffinately not official, in my opinion. The path was always a shared path, long before the estate was constructed. Also the estate has separate paths almost parrallel to the shared paths. I think the estate tried to take the original shared paths and ban cycling, but the authorities have kicked back, which is great! Now the authories need to remove those 'illegal' no cycling signs.
Great intel thank you! Thats good news that C14 is biting back! The no cycling signs never made any sense but clearly if TfL are signposting routes down there they’re not valid
@@Londoncycleroutes I took photos of the new C14 paint on the path, the shared path signs and on the path, and the illegal No cycling signs, from different angles. As I said, the shared path was there years before the estate was constructed!
"92% increase in cycling" - where do you get this type of data, is it available online?
yep! not sure UA-cam will let me post a link here but if you google "Railton Low Traffic Neighbourhood Stage Two Monitoring Report" it should be the first result, it's on Lambeth's website. They have a summary but also the full tables etc for closer scrutiny
@@Londoncycleroutes Thanks, found it, "Cycling rates were high before the LTN and have stayed that way. But on Railton Road they have nearly doubled, increasing by 92 per cent."

So kind thank you!
Cycling around London with all the crunchy leaves and that autumn smell in the air is one of life's great joys.
it's a brilliant time of the year!
Yep…until it starts raining!
I love these videos 😊 We're moving back to London next year from Finland, and it's great to see how much London's cycling infrastructure has improved since we left London 11 years ago. I can't wait to be cycling there again. Cheers! 👍
It's definitely improved a lot in 11 years! welcome back!
Were you cycling in Finland?
Vickers on bikes - that should be a TFL target . Great ride + video .
Yes make it a key performance indicator haha!
Close shave with that van !!!
Very much so, one of the closest I’ve had!
I’d love to live in London , as a cycle commuter I could ride round that city all day , coffee stops etc . Hi from wales.
You’re welcome any time!
Could you do New Cross to Fitzrovia as I’ve had a collision with a pedestrian who crossed and stopped in front of me giving me a minor concussion. The result of this is that my coordination is off. I cannot position my bike properly and keep swerving at low speed which makes other cyclists slow down and confuse other motorists. Cycling through central London at rush hour is so risky. Not only because of cars but the unpredictable pedestrians who just walk out and follow other pedestrians without checking it’s clear for them first. It was these extra wide crossing that took me out. I was approaching the junction and it just turned amber. The pedestrians saw me and didn’t show any consideration as some of the pedestrians stepped into road as I got to the crossing blocking my view from the man I hit. I had less than a second to react. After the incident these pedestrians were one of the most ignorant, entitled and apathetic people I’ve ever met. No one even asked me if I was ok or checked if I had any injuries. They were talking to me as if people are translucent. It was a red man and he couldn’t even see me. What was he thinking? I tried explaining it was dark, it was raining, hes carrying a lot of gear and he couldn’t see me so you shouldn’t be crossing on a red man. If you cross on a red man without making proper observations and you get hit you only have yourself to blame. They didn’t want to hear it or even apologise to me sincerely for what happened. Next time I am going to stand and shout as I go through. I’m not getting another concussion The police were a joke as usual. Telling me to wear high vis which is scientifically proven to not make a difference. If people don’t look you will miss everything.
Very sorry to hear about that, sounds like a horrible experience. Check out the New Cross to Covent Garden video, it should cover most of the route! Will see if I can extend it
@ Thank you very much. It could only get to Elephant and Castle or Waterloo in low traffic. I did try experimenting by going towards Blackfriars bridge and using CS3 But Covent Garden is close enough. But I do wonder how much time a quieter route can add to my journey. My commute is around 25-35 minutes depending on different factors.
Amazing thank you!
Enjoy!
Wow, bringing up the subject of pronunciation and pronouncing it wrongly! Pronounce and pronunciation, notice the o missing in pronunciation, and it is pronounced as it is written! Come on, you should do better than that!
It’s a common way to say the word, if it bothers you I’d recommend lodging a complaint with the Academie Anglaise which regulates such matters

I'm quite a bit older than you and I've only ever heard Greenwich pronounced Grinnich. Ps it's because of idiots like that van driver that I've virtually given up cycling. It's just too dangerous for me
Must be an age divide on it too!
This is great. I need to get onto a bike and try and get healthy- admittedly I am nervous and ashamed of myself for lacking discipline. What a great way to see the capital city. I will have to book a train ticket and then grab a Boris bike from Euston and try these cycle routes!
Don’t feel bad about it! It can seem a bit daunting at first but once you’re out there you’ll love it if you’re cycling the right routes! Wishing you good luck with it
