  • You can cycle from Peckham in south London to Kensington high street in west London in about 40-45 minutes, entirely on quiet streets and protected cycled lanes.
The route is a little over 7 miles long (11.5km) and makes use of Surrey Canal Walk, Burgess Park, Cycleway 17, the Walworth low traffic neighbourhood, the Kennington Road cycle tracks, Westminster Bridge, and Cycleway 3 up through Hyde Park.
By public transport the journey takes longer, around an hour - so this is a good one to cycle.

As long as people clearly with shares in petrochemical operations (they clearly love their Range Rovers and BMW X’s so much to make sure their shares aren’t for nothing) continue live in Kensington and Chelsea, they’ll never allow “those damn cyclists who always cause the accidents and definitely not us with our unwieldy luxury SUVs that we so desperately want” to have cycle lanes through.
It is eternally frustrating that virtually every other local council in London is cooperative in understanding the need for good continuous cycle infrastructure, Kensington and Chelsea is the black sheep.
    Bloody toffs.
Love your channel, I’m actually not from London at all, I’m from Burton on Trent in the Midlands, but I was down in London week before last, and pretty wowed by how much the city has improved in terms of cycling infrastructure. So if anything, other than I find videos like this oddly relaxing, it’s helping me learn the ins and outs of how to get around London by bike if I’m down there again, so I really appreciate what you do.

    A totally useless anecdote:
Many, many moons ago I was riding my bike eastbound on Kensington High Street when a car emerging from Kensington Palace Gardens stopped to give way to me. I made eye contact with the driver only to find Princess Di smiling politely back at me. Which was nice. 🙂

The cycle lanes around Buckingham palace are so poorly marked especially the one up constitution hill. I saw a cyclist and some tourist get in an argument that almost got physical recently. They just need to put the bicycle picture on the path more often. The same is true heading north through Hyde park towards Paddington.

    • @Londoncycleroutes

Yeah I agree completely - ideally a different surface colour would be good, but I think the Crown Estate is very picky about the road layout because it’s a ceremonial spot etc

Do you think it would be possible to remove the rumble strips in Hyde Park on the grounds of they discriminate against adapted-bikes/trikes/wheelchairs? Must be very uncomfortable to go over in a pram/wheelchair too, and at a much lower speed

What a fantastic route! I've cycled portions of it but to see it all linked together like this is great. Almost half of it is through parks which is very nice.
I do really dislike those Hyde Park rumble strips, it occurred to me the side barriers were to stop cyclists mounting the grass but then I thought that was crazy and there must be some other reason. The strips are effective in one respect, if I'm travelling east though the park I'll just head on to Kensington Road to avoid them.

It's not just the southbound Westminster bridge cycle lane that's hazardous. I hit the deck on the northbound lane on Sun when an idiot walked onto the cycle lane right in front of me (not at a crossing point) without looking and I was going about 7 mph. I would go as far as to say those cycle lanes are simply too dangerous to ride at weekends and I think you should add a note to this effect in the description..

@@Londoncycleroutes thanks for getting back. In all honesty I was nearly brought down there twice more in the space of about 100 yards. People were just walking in and out of the cycle lane without looking as if it was an extension of the pavement. Totally unsafe for riding. I guess you have been asked this before. Have you considered using a 3d camera to film the routes? To keep sane and fit during Lockdown last year I used my Quest 2 with my exercise bike to tour virtually various cycle routes around the world. It was fantastic to get that all-around visual experience. I can watch your work on a massive 2d screen in VR but if it were in 3d then I am actually in the video. (virtually) If you were able to it would certainly open up your channel to virtual headset users around the world.

I've seen some videos from other youtubers that say cycling in London is impossible, would u say that's true? for me i don't think it does because when i did live in London for brief time i mostly took the tube, didn't own a bike. Only time i biked was when I lived in Cambridge with my family this was back in 2012 i think when my brother n sister took their masters at queens college there i biked quite a lot everyday and it's really chill. Now i live in Copenhagen and while i do agree it's easier to bike here due to the many bike paths, i don't think it would be too different to London, because we have all the crazy people out on the road over here as u guys do over there so i'm used to the chaos when biking. Idk how do u guys find i cycling over there?

How do you keep your bike safe in London. Surely if you go to say Kensington, chain it to a lamp post and go for lunch somewhere or shopping, by the time you get back, the bike would have gone surely (unless its a cheap/old bike)?

No not at all, London’s a pretty safe city, I have a road bike and I just use of D-lock to lock it to stuff and it’s always been fine. Your route looks more bike friendly and just a better route all round. One advantage of mine is it avoids that annoying series of lights in Parliament Square but that's about it. Anyway, instead of turning right just after the kiln in Burgess Park, continue then turn left just before the tennis courts, and pick up Bethwin St. At the end turn right into John Ruskin St, then left into Dale Rd, then left into Otto St, then right into Kennington Park. Cross the A3 and Kennington Rd, then turn left into Bowling Green St. Turn right and follow the outside of The Oval cricket ground. Turn right onto CS5. Continue over Vauxhall bridge. Turn right into Regency St, then right into Horseferry Rd, left into Monck St, right into Great Peter St, left into Great Smith St, then right at Victoria St, then a quick left into Storeys Gate.
