My only goal for 2022 is to write and record a song that’s good enough to make it on here (I think I said that already, not that I’m that good yet lol)
hey man, got a video for you to check out, Behind Her Savage Killing - Demolisher (Official Music Video). vocalist slaps hard and doesnt get enough recognition.
This is why Mark is the greatest screaming coach on the platform, he explains the science behind every technique. Not only that, but he encourages everyone to be their own type of vocalist. Thank you Mark.
Ok ok ok but Mark my dude that whole segment of you playing around with placement around 36:40 is a) fucking disgusting in the best way possible and b) so wholesome to just watch you geek out and find new sounds! Loved the vid, analysis, pep talk, the whole nine yards was on point, as always ❤️
This video is a prime example of how you should not be straining or putting in a tonne of effort when screaming. Will acts so calm and relaxed in this video!
But then you see Travis Ryan of Cattle Decap and he's super animated and all over the place, contorting his face and whatnot. You can still have impeccable technique but look like you're actually into it.
@@joshforeman1648 nah he post produces the shit out of his covers and vocal play throughs. It would be preferred with no mic and raw vocals. You can tell he’s lip syncing
I'm not trying to sound exactly like Will. I just want to be at the level of synchronicity with my body where I am as relaxed while belting out these screams as Will. Dude seems like he's at a tea party in his head while he's screaming. It's insane.
I had to comment because I was one of those guys who found the "advanced stuff" easy, but the "simple" stuff extremely hard. I found the mashy lows, screeching highs, and crackle mids really easy. It was the roaring, volumous mids that most people default to that I found most difficult. Great takes@
On that opening: One of the most amazing things is when you hear a massive crowd of people singing and chanting along with the music they are experiencing live. It's an incredibly powerful thing to hear so many individual voices at different levels, timbres, pitches, in key, out of key, just letting it all come out. Man, that'd suck if they all sounded identical, because even robots don't sound alike. Your individual voice is unique and something you should be proud of. Although some sound ever so close, they never sound identical, it's one of those perfect imperfections of humanity that I utterly adore. (Fun fact: Robots don't actually all sound alike, even if they had the same voice, the speakers emitting the sound would all be ever so slightly different, because there is no such thing as a perfect speaker. It's a strangely endearing concept, we as perfectly imperfect creatures create machines so that they may do what we cannot perfectly, and as a result can never achieve actual perfection. That's a mouthful.)
I wish there were more one take videos that were closer to the live performance without layers and heavy mixing. As someone who has gotten absolutely addicted to learning new techniques these live one takes are a god damn gold mine for getting my fix.
@GretchTheZ I agree for the most part. Especially I like the one-takes for the Lorna Shore stuff far better than the album version. Album version sounds like the vocals are often drowning into the instrumentals imo.
Love the longer more technical videos. Would be really interested in seeing technique comparison videos between vocalists, showing how different vocalists approach similar sounds to get their unique versions of x or t technique, with your technical examination explaining through it.
Loved the soapbox sermon. Your videos and presentation style make me feel like I'm listening to a TedTalks podcast on metal vocals with some fantastic critique, coaching, and banter. Your videos are awesome, Mark!
I’m with you on the “pray to imitation gods” being one of the most impressive parts. It’s so impactful, even more so in this version. This whole song has a cosmic crazy sort of beauty to it, the lyrics, the symphonic parts, that insane guitar solo, the epic chorus it’s all just so perfect.
Travis Ryan from Cattle Decapitation was really the one that progressed these sorts of vocal techniques. Listening to him talk about it is fascinating. The guy deserves way more credit.
Haha thanks. Its been a backpocket technique of mine for a while, though im probably not the first to do it. I've been trying to get more vocalists to give it a shot, hopefully it catches on!
thank you for the pep talk section in the first few minutes of the video, i'm still trying to figure out the basics of harsh vocals and will hear will's mids on the lorna ep and get super intimidated and basically feel like i'm hitting a wall but you're helping remind me that i'll get there, even if the end result isn't quite the same as what his are like

Thanks again for a great vid tangents are some of the most fun Part, and Will Ramos is amazing to say the least. He is so calm and obviously enjoying himself as he performs. Love the one take vids he has been putting out, and glad you have been covering them, because you can see he really can make that whole song asthma and all. I hope he has as long a career as he wants. Also he did a Tea time with The Charismatic Voice and agreed to a camera down his throat so that will hopefully be something shared and will be amazing. For The science of vocals.
omfg. when you did the cheek pull with the tongue thing i think thats one of the coolest sounds i have ever heard. i hope you sneak that into a Kardashev song
I really wish is vocal were more forward on the record just like in the vocal one take he does. I love the instrumental don't get me wrong but Will's technique is so "on point" I feel it needs to be hear clearer on the final mix!!
I cannot believe i just learned that you're the vocalist of Kardashev. I cannot stop listening to Somnus, and when I googled your band it says you guys are from Tempe! Right in my backyard
I am not vocalist, I just like to scream from time to time and because of you videos I started to experiment with my shitty screams and now I can make -some nice sounds - in my opinion of course. I know I will never sound like Will, Kyle or whoever you can think of but I can sound like myself. One of the thing that put Will in spotlight is because he can do some really unique screams. If you want to be like Will do the same - appreciate what you can do and do it, experiment, make your own stuff.
Coming back to this video months after I first watched it to give you a massive "thank you". I have no interest in ever being a singer and I'm only about a year into really discovering metal, but you've made 2+ hour long car rides listening to metal that much better. Instead of just listening, now I'm *singing* and analyzing. I'm a nerd about everything I do and I love watching someone dive as in-depth as possible into what they love, too. Thank you for helping me find my voice-- both literally and figuratively.
Bro this vid is easily the best one yet. We all love Will obviously and you discussing his craft and appreciating just how far he has taken it and then you in real time found a new distortion which sounded fucking unreal. Well worth the 40 min mate 🙏🏼
Ooooo that dirty dirty noise at 36:40! Love it. Always love a good pep talk coach, it's so great seeing how much you care about people being confident in themselves.
I like that inspirational talk. But Will has to wanna flex what he can do. but in a sense that he knows we love that. It's a good flex. He's giving us what we want. But he's not taking that for granted. He even said, THAT PART was a total accident and unplanned. He just did a thing he thought would sound cool. He's truly an inspiration to those who seek it. Those who see it as just a flex, or can't be as good, aren't trying.
I really enjoy seeing people react to this that aren't used to this kind of music. But this, I really really appreciate your ability to not only break down the mechanics behind what Will does, but actually have the skills and confidence to bust out some fantastic vocals of your own and seemingly effortlessly sing along and play around with what you hear. Subscribed!
And I only just noticed all the D&D stuff in the background! I can only imagine the monster noises you could easily do. I wasn't interested in harsh vocals as a singer, but as a DM, now I think about it..
I just saw an interview with Will Ramos by Elisabeth from the charismatic voice and Will seemed like a genuine nice guy that wants to learn and offers advice to anyone who wants to learn new ways of singing.
Maybe one day you could get a hold of Will and do a interview with him talking about vocals to get his prospective on his one takes. And you are right brother about the one takes I think it is satisfying to him to show that you can do things near his level and it is possible. And everyone's anatomy of the face structure and vocals. Keep up the amazing work Mark

Such a strong message at the beginning!!! I am new to metal vocals, always wanted to do it as I am guitarist. I struggled to begin with because I was trying to sound like someone and not embrace my own voice. Its your own unique instrument.
For this style of reaction I don't think it matters if you've seen or heard it before. Since you're more into breaking down what's going on rather than just pulling some faces because you got surprised or something haha
Thanks for doing a break down of the vocals! Really interesting stuff! Really appreciate Will and his journey, never heard of Lorna Shore till now and am just loving it. Another band that is super small still is As Lion and Lambs with their vocalists Matt who uses some these techniques and have their own sound. Check ‘‘em out.
You have to get Will on your channel. He's been on the other big vocal channels I watch. Saw him and the band at a restaurant in Lancaster, PA last week at their last show before they head to Europe. Will is cool as fuck and down to earth.
Seriously one of the most informative channels on how metal singers produce these awesome sounds. Keep up the great content! Hope you get Will on the channel for a guest! I have a masters in music as a trumpet player. I’ve always been fascinated with metal music.
Mark, the explanation of variation from voice to voice and finding inspiration vs limitation was huge. Thank you for reinforcing that message. happy holidays brother
The thing that I've noticed with Will's vocal technique is how relaxed he is when screaming and it's cool to see how calm and collected he is, and in his interview with Elizabeth from the Charismatic Voice it was cool to see how he described his vocal technique and how his inspiration came from opera singers
to add to the comment from the beginning alex terrible trained and worked on the ulra clear low from him for 12 years befor he was happy with it. Will stated in his interview that he s still learning and improving and that dickie allen was a big inspiration for him and even back then people said that dickies screams were fake or heavelly edited
Absolutely amazing point at the beginning, nobody should be trying to sound like someone else, the difference in the genres and vocals is what makes metal and actually all kind of music beautiful.
Haha hell yeah! I actually went to school pursuing a speech therapy degree. I got sick and had to quit the program unfortunately, but I got about halfway through my serior year. I pretty much base all of my teaching on what I learned in my speech / audiology courses.
Im not really into these kinda vocals BUT i do appreciate them much more then i did when i first heard them. I must say this guy is the best ive ever heard .
These were also a great way to prove he could really do these vocals live. People of course loved to hate on it cause it was so popular so this was amazing to prove yeah ... the guy is a beast
Prior to listening to To the Hellfire a few times, watching a few reactions, the release of the Title Track -which I immediately fell in love with-, and the interview charismatic voice did with Will... I never really cared to listen to deathcore... like... at all. I think the thing that sets (at least currently) lorna shore from the rest, is the insane amount of melody going on. I LOVE when bands use orchestral additions. Classical and metal are the 2 best combinations, and the way that they have mixed it is a perfect unison. Also Will has a LOT of annunciation in his screams, which is something I really appreciate Also I have to say. I've always wanted to be able to scream. Circa 2002 when my cousin showed me In Flames Clayman for the first time. Will, like Anders, has made it so I wish I could do them... and have his range
That's cool man! It's definitely possible for anyone to learn to scream - I'd be happy to teach you if you want to learn - just drop me an email at kardavox1010@gmail.com to learn more!
Im a classical singer just finding all of this fascinating and it has me wondering how I can somehow incorporate these techniques into classical music. For instance, in Shubert’s “Erlkönig” I’ve always thought it would be cool to use harsh vocals when the Erlking reveals his true intentions in the song/poem. And actually, metal band Hope Lies Within did something like this in their arrangement/cover of Erlking/Erlkönig (they recorded both in English and German). Thank you for all of the insight, Mark!
My pleasure, dude! And that would be really dope. If ever you want to learn this style of vocals, I've taught all kinds - so drop me an email on kardavox1010@gmail.com to learn more about my student offerings!

Another band that is super small still is As Lion and Lambs with their vocalists Matt who uses some these techniques and have their own sound. Check ‘‘em out.
Austin Archey is a machine on the kit ....Much like Will is on the vocals .
im waiting for a mf playthrough of any of the ep songs.
@@billykordecki6052 Ha You and me both !
Your detailed knowledge and explanation of how these harsh vocals are made is extremely helpful mahn. Thank you for douing what you dou.
My pleasure! Glad it was helpful!
LOVE your experimental snarl growls!!! implement those on future tracks
Not sure how suited it is to Kardashev's music, but maybe if I do some covers!
You have to get Will on your channel. He's been on the other big vocal channels I watch. Saw him and the band at a restaurant in Lancaster, PA last week at their last show before they head to Europe. Will is cool as fuck and down to earth.
We'd love to have him on!
Seriously one of the most informative channels on how metal singers produce these awesome sounds. Keep up the great content! Hope you get Will on the channel for a guest! I have a masters in music as a trumpet player. I’ve always been fascinated with metal music.
That sounds awesome, Nicholas, and I'd love to have Will on!
What an awesome breakdown! So helpful
Yo Jackson, good to see you! Glad it was helpful!
Mark, the explanation of variation from voice to voice and finding inspiration vs limitation was huge. Thank you for reinforcing that message. happy holidays brother
My pleasure! That's what I'm here for! - Same to you bro!
one thing that I want for 2022 is to take lesson w/ you man!!!
Hell yeah man, drop me an email at kardavox1010@gmail.com and let's set something up!
That fart noise was so powerfull yt thought i needed extra recovery and blessed me with an ad
The thing that I've noticed with Will's vocal technique is how relaxed he is when screaming and it's cool to see how calm and collected he is, and in his interview with Elizabeth from the Charismatic Voice it was cool to see how he described his vocal technique and how his inspiration came from opera singers
Mark, You totally missed the little trip after the "flirty look"🤣🤣
to add to the comment from the beginning alex terrible trained and worked on the ulra clear low from him for 12 years befor he was happy with it. Will stated in his interview that he s still learning and improving and that dickie allen was a big inspiration for him and even back then people said that dickies screams were fake or heavelly edited
I gotta mess around with that cheek pull tunnel throats. Sounds gnarly
Yo! I've been trying to get more people to do cheeky screams for YEARS. Do it!
Absolutely amazing point at the beginning, nobody should be trying to sound like someone else, the difference in the genres and vocals is what makes metal and actually all kind of music beautiful.
I always get so hyped then so disappointed seeing I have to wait another day or so until I can watch it. Should another great video though I'm sure
I am so excited for this!!
As a speech pathologist I LOVE your little tid bits of speech and hearing science you include 🤓
Also Will has a LOT of annunciation in his screams, which is something I really appreciate
Also I have to say.
I know I'm meant to be focusing on vocals here but I couldn't help myself from trying to get a better peak at those DnD books!
Hell yeah - gotta love DnD!
Loved the Greg Doucette impression, what a strange place for such a unique way to do a veiled shoutout, siq
Sweeeeeeet, another long video!
Thanks.
Hope everyone has a very Goober Christmas!!!
You bet! Thanks for watching!
You didn't pause at 0:40
