I'm 57 years old, have been hearing this track for 40-odd years, and I am always brought to tears starting at the 10:45 mark. What incredible music from a band that will live forever...
Jimmy is the absolute king of riffs. Not many others have come up with so many unique riffs to so many different songs. Robert is a lyric writing master. Bonzo is the backbone that holds it all together. JPJ remains THE secret ingredient to the whole band. “Just believe and you can’t go wrong”. 💕
This song to me is as epic as No Quarter, Kashmir, and Achilles Last Stand, such a different sound, so deep, so intoxicating, it's songs like this that put Zeppelin so far ahead of everyone else, another masterpiece. Love the reactions
The Live from Madison Square Gardens (soundtrack version ) and the BBC Recording No Quarter sounded like they just planned melting xlrs betting it couldn't be resolved after. Very embossed to get charge means to ramp that direction on stage
Back in Feb 2015 I was lucky enough to be able to go to a Physical Graffiti Playback session with Jimmy Page at Olympic studios in London the very studio where lots of Zep songs were recorded. Jimmy took us though the songs and at the time never heard alternate takes to PG tracks before the box set arrived on sale. It was a magical night and hearing the songs on the studios stunning sound system made it extra special.
I’m a big fan of that single bass A note that starts part II. It sounds so serious. That being said that high note in the beginning where he says “whoa” always got me too.
By far, Physical Graffiti is my favorite Zep album. It's a smorgasbord of genres and styles. Not every song cooks, but collectively, there's nothing this album can beat. Always been in my top ten albums of all time. This song is a great example of Zep's composition talent. You've got that droning, hypnotizing JPJ intro, that goes into a rising riff backing Plant's extended melody lines done in triplet, then comes the rock, but we're not done. Page's marching riff backed by that droning chord, and let's throw in a change of pace at the end of the verse, but we're not done. Then comes Jonesy with a light, funky keyboard riff with Bonzo punching it up with some staccato fills. Done? Oh, no. Back to the intro. and on to Jimmy's outro fills. Brilliant!
In The Light starts a great side of music full of underrated songs, especially this song and Down By the Seaside. Ten Years Gone has received more acclaim in recent years and deservedly so (my favorite Zep tune). There are a lot of unique parts but a few stand out for me. I feel that this is one of Robert's great understated performances. He double tracks the harmonies and, I believe, uses quite a bit if reverb on his voice, but he is not buried in the mix nor does he overwhelm the song. The other, as Mike correctly points out, is the descending bass line in the middle of the song. It pairs perfectly with Page's ascending guitar. I also love that sustained note or chord Page hits at the end of each verse. It's simple but fills the space with like a left jab. Thanks again for your work.
This album side..was always a headphones special... My favorite album of All Time!! Can still hear my Old Man.. (Love you Dad).. screaming " turn down those dam Pots n Pans" lol.
One of my 3 favorite tracks off PG - love the atmospheric almost eastern feel to this & then the Hammer comes down...personally, i'm bummed Zep never did this live. Great reaction as always 👍🎹❣
This song In the Light has a progressive rock sound and very different from most Led Zeppelin songs. This is one of my favorite songs from my favorite Zeppelin album Physical Graffiti….
zeppelin has always had deep music and very diverse if you want something that is current and in the same diverse sounds and songs and zeppelin is a huge influence check out Big wreck voices, locomotive, great musicians as well and songs Ian thornley has a big bag of riffs also
hey guys... I believe the instrument at the beginning is a Hurdy Gurdy.... the box that Jimmy is seen playing sitting on the grass in the movie The Song Remains the Same.
Alternate version released in 2015 on physical graffiti deluxe "everybody makes it through" its an early mix. Then same year on coda deluxe is the same song but a rough mix both are totally different from the final on the original physical graffiti 75
Okay so I’m a Zephead since I was 15 years old. I’m nearly 69 now. This is a good song for listening to in the right mood/ambience but to me it’s to “ fragmented” and “ bitty” to really work. I’m not surprised it never made it on stage, especially as there must be about 6 guitars overdubbed towards the end. Thanks Mike and Dev for your intelligent, thorough and entertaining reaction ( as ever). Best wishes from 🏴 England.
@@devM4BP LOL, I thought it might have been a hiccup, haha! Cool "behind the scenes" tidbit there! I guess y'all cut out the thing he said that made you, er, squeak. I feel ya, though, I woulda squeaked too if someone "assumed" for me, lol! And since you teased it, I need to go over to part two and see what this "drama" you spoke of was, hehe.
Some Zep footage from the Bath festival in 1970 with overdubbed audio from the Royal Albert Hall a few months earlier. Enjoy guys! ua-cam.com/video/8yYJF0clN44/v-deo.html

This song is a tremendous accomplishment. It has lost none of it's dramatic impact over the decades. It always struck me as a combination of gothic and psychedelia. 🎸🔥🤘
So prob safe to say In the light, sick again, Kashmir, trampled underfoot were recorded after Plants surgery as they’re instrumentals on the deluxe partner release I like his voice in all these
Always thought the droning sounds in the beginning of the song were made on a hurdy-gurdy. You know like in the movie song remains the same where he's under that tree playing that hurdy-gurdy.... I'm not certain but that's what I was thinking.
You should’ve done the outtake version on Physical Graffiti deluxe edition for part 2. “Everybody Makes it Through” It’s when they were planning out the lyrics and getting a feel for the song, early on. It’s almost like a live version It’s great!
John Paul Jones was so important to this band! Not only his fantastic bass playing and creative keyboard work and his arranging. Also, his riff writing! The heavy riff in this song was written by Jones not Page. He also came up with the riff for Good times bad times, Black dog, Celebration day, and I’m sure others that I’m not thinking of, and we don’t even know about!
Always really liked this song, but think they could have done much more with the ending than this; seems liked they mailed it in rather than giving it a proper Zeppelin finish.

One of their very best unkown songs.🤘😎

I think JPJ is a secret riff-master as well
@@MusicforBusyPeople he absolutely is, im not sure if this is jimmys or jonesys, feels like jonesy but it doesnt really matter either way lol
The first sound you hear is a hurdy gurdy.
It was used in the middle ages.
It had delays and deep reverbs
This masterpiece of an album exudes creativity at the highest level.

That’s so great. So lucky
Wow - that must've been the height of cool
First time I heard this I was driving my sister's Firebird and this cassette was already in the stereo and I instantly fell in love with it
i love how it starts out with jimmy page bowing the guitar, sounds so cool
It doesn't

What an amazing song!! JPJ shines on this one!
During the introduction segment I’m thinking “ bagpipes??”.
…Jones used a Farfisa Double Combo organ on the opening. These unique sounding mini keyboards came from Italy.

LOVE the outro, the layered guitars/multiple guitar parts are a great effect!
You guys are awesome!!! I love it! This song is absolutely unique IMO. It’s my pleasure to watch both of your videos!! Thank you signed “THE GOATS” 😉

GOOSE BUMPS ALL OVER AGAIN
One of my 3 favorite tracks off PG - love the atmospheric almost eastern feel to this & then the Hammer comes down...personally, i'm bummed Zep never did this live. Great reaction as always 👍🎹❣
I think we have to blame its live absence on synthesizer technology back then.
@@MusicforBusyPeople Totally agree...so much easier today
Dev is a treat. Thanks for sharing.
A masterpiece ....
Why is physical graffiti the best led Zeppelin album? Simply put...Because it has the most led Zeppelin songs on it!
Mike can't help doing the air drums on the quick breaks, just like all of us :)
This song In the Light has a progressive rock sound and very different from most Led Zeppelin songs. This is one of my favorite songs from my favorite Zeppelin album Physical Graffiti….
Love the "Butterfly."
You wear it well!

I used to listen to this whole album on a walkman going to sleep- couldn't believe what i was hearing from song to song- still don't

Yeah Dev. I also thought “ bagpipes???” back in February 1975!
One of 3 LZ songs where Jimmy used a bow on the guitar. Classic prog masterpiece.
Immense song! And impressive tan lines by the way 👍

:49 Ahh, what was that 'squeak', Dev? Another unique song. True standout from Phys. Graff. ❤ the reaction.🎶👍
Mike told me I was going to like something about the song, and that was me being like, "I'll be the judge of that" 🤪

@joe scott I am not even sure what drama she is referring to. LOL. It could be some of The Black Crowes controversy that I had to cut out.

This song is a tremendous accomplishment. It has lost none of it's dramatic impact over the decades. It always struck me as a combination of gothic and psychedelia. 🎸🔥🤘
Crumbs, Zepnut me all but forgot this epic!
I personally prefer the "Everybody Makes It Through (In The Light) (Rough Mix)" version in Coda album. It's kinda creepier and I like it
I used to have that Page/Plant t-shirt. I don't know what became of it, but I did like it, a lot.
I can't believe it's lasted this long.
LOVE this track
So prob safe to say
In the light, sick again, Kashmir, trampled underfoot were recorded after Plants surgery as they’re instrumentals on the deluxe partner release

If you haven't already check out the alternate versions of this song.
Great song so unique. 👌

Very hard to play that live!
My favorite of there's maybe
This song has always been one of my favs. Definite headphone usage 😊 just another example of the importance of JPJ….
I was definitely guilty of under-appreciating JPJ when I was younger. No more!
It sounds like bagpipes, which they’d all be very familiar with.
You should’ve done the outtake version on Physical Graffiti deluxe edition for part 2.
“Everybody Makes it Through”
It’s when they were planning out the lyrics and getting a feel for the song, early on.
It’s almost like a live version

Great meditation on suicide song. Probably their greatest. MEMBERS only
They are just better.

Jimmy Page lord of the strings! This song is a perfect example of Jimmy Pages light to shade!
Alternate version "In the morning" and there is another I can't think of the name. Here on youtube.
Whale sounds by Led Zeppelin.
They have a different version called everybody makes it through , which is a creepier cool version . Its on the Coda album I think .
Have you heard alternate version??
I believe the guitar is bowed but there is track of hurdy gurdy in there as well
Bagpipes intro on synthasizer
Used to be the best song to set up the floor stereo. You will know if 1 of your speakers is busted playing this😂
I dont remember if I ever look what they used to make that sound, but is very similar to a Hurdy-Gurdy, specially the constant sound the background
This is one of 3 LZ songs where Jimmy bows the guitar...the opening sequence, in addition to synthesizers by JPJ, includes bowed guitars.
Check out "No Quarter".
yet anothre GREAT riff! not sure if this is jimmys or jonesys, feels like jonesy
A classic!
Always really liked this song, but think they could have done much more with the ending than this; seems liked they mailed it in rather than giving it a proper Zeppelin finish.
Better than Kashmir
Hurdy gurdy if that’s how it’s spelt
A hurdy gurdy
That undergirding riff is NASTY! It needs its own Stripper's Pole.
Kids 😉
precocious sensibility notwithstanding! n'est pas?
Another non working UA-cam reaction. GOTO WORK
