I could have pressed a little less on the paint to remove the contamination, and that would have not make the scratches that were found at 5:09. However since I knew the entire car was going to get a 2 step polish and then ceramic coated, I knew I was going to have to break out the polisher and polish the paint, so by pushing a tad harder, it allowed me to save a bunch of a lot of time during the claying stage. Regardless, a beautiful shine can be achieved, just look at the final results at 7:32.
milanmastracci Hey man love you videos! I have a 05 TSX and I'm in Toronto. I know you're in the St Catharines area. How can I get you to detail my car?!?!
I really hope the people watching this don't go and do this to their car. you should NOT be inflicting that amount of damage to the paint when claying. PLEASE GO AND WATCH OTHER TUTORIALS.
17 years detailing experience. I love your videos and how you really take time to explain. But please be careful when teaching others to clay that way. In no way should you scratch the car when you clay. Work the clay much more into your hands. About five minutes to warm it up. Also use a lot more lubrication and apply less pressure.
Just wondering if you used a fallout remover after the initial wash before claying? I would have thought iron fallout remover would have pulled a lot of the environmental fallout off the paint before claying. I've got a car in similar shape to detail. Has never been washed in 6 years. That's going to be fun!
Less pressure, more lube and you wont get the horrible marring you inflicted - gives you less to correct too... The whole point of clay is to apply the bare minimum friction, not force it onto the surface.
MzNToS I'm talking about the white marring which can only have been caused by the clay bar. When claying you are not meant to apply any pressure, if you force it then the clay will not glide over the surface - instead it will stick and cause lots of friction which when combined with the dirt it's picked up is equivalent to sand paper. The more pressure you apply with clay the worse it performs and the more likely you are to damage your paint, and one can quite clearly see Milan *leaning* into it and the bonnet flexing.
Thomas Cole Unfortunately that's not how clay works. As mentioned a few times, and in anyher previous comment of mine, clay performs best and is safest with minimal pressure. Putting too much pressure will result in it acting like sandpaper. Filthy paint like that will come back clean just by spending more time on a lower pressure. For reference, when I clay my car, I can normally do the whole thing in about 30mins. When I clayed my Dads car, which had never been detailed in its 10 year life and gets put through an automated wash maybe twice a year took me over two hours to clay, but came up perfect and I didn't have to apply any pressure at all and I certainly didn't marr the paint.
I have claybared many vehicles and have never caused scuffing like that. I think you are applying to much pressure or something. But looks like you were making your job a lot harder than it should have been
Herbert Halstead i think he is using a really abrasive clay. And if you use the wrong lube it will eat the clay and make it look that way. Old clay will disintegrate and look like this. Clay is very product pacific IMO.
Lack of lube is what will cause that. I use the Ammo NYC method for claying... Dunk my washmit in the buck of soapy water and have that serve as a constant lubrication source as I clay. It holds a lot of water and as soon as I need more, just clench my fist a little and down it pours lol.
Agreed. Unless the paint is ridiculously soft and the clay is extremely aggressive, combined with his technique, it may very well be causing the marring due to the extreme pressure.
Herbert Halstead you got duped! The marring is not scratches its from the clay bar turning liquidy, he did this to make it look like he fixed the paint i bet he buffed it out with some spray wax.
DON'T USE THIS VIDEO AS A GUIDE. More lube. Slow down. Less pressure. Clay pulls contaminants off of the clear coat. Doesn't need a ton of pressure to do that. You're using it like a damned scrubber. If you take your your time and do it properly, perhaps with a less aggressive clay, you may not have to polish afterward. Also, with very bad contamination you should knead the clay almost constantly. You have too much abrasive contaminants in the surface of the clay. On a badly contaminated car a couple of passes turns that clay into something as abrasive as rubbing compound. 5:11 was horrifying. I need a drink after seeing this and it's too early to be drinking.
In fact, I think you have done ok, but you lacked enough lubricant for your claying man. By no means, should claying cause that marring you have. You think and say it is normal, but it is not. You're a great guy and are doing well but I do not agree with you on the marring you have from the claying man. Honestly.
I just want you to know that that type of damage coming from the clayng is not normal. I've never dealt with anything quite that bad so maybe there's nothing better he can do in this case but in a regular case that is NOT normal.
Otagner I have dealt with paint that bad and he was using way too much pressure. Completely miss represented how clay should be used. Can you introduce scratches while claying? Sure but more on the level of micro marring not wet sanding.
I've dealt with much worse than that and had it come out fine. I don't know what he's doing wrong as I've never seen that kind of result from claying but whatever it is it's wrong.
Morgan Mansfield doesn't stop the fact that this guy is using the wrong method of claying and is scratching up his paint by his own fault, not because of the clay or contamination on it's own. Good claying technique wouldn't have scratched the paint up like that. You also might want to educate yourself on proper Grammer before telling others to educate themselves.
i dont know why everyone uses that shitty spray detailer to clay bar with, you have to use practically the whole bottle doing one car to get enough "lubricant" on the paint to avoid scratches like what was witnessed in this video. All I do is wash the car, dump out old soapy water, fill with fresh soapy water and use the soapy water with the clay in sections, rinsing frequently. Takes fewer steps and doesn't require you to dry the car off in between washing and claying, plus the soapy water gives you way more lubricant between the clay and paint to lessen the chances of scratching the paint. Never had any issues doing it this way.
Jay G the paint was super contaminated. It’s ineveitable. He was going to compound and polish it afterwards and he needs to remove everything before even putting in the machine. He’ll remove the scratches left by the clay with the polisher
I've been detailing for many years and I did the exact same procedure to my STi. When I first bought it, it wasn't nearly as bad as this infiniti. But it did have that harsh feeling when you ran your hands over the paint. I clayed it, polished it, IPA and many layers of sealants. The car still looks amazing. I do a Menzerna 4500 every spring to just bring that pop back out and reseal it. But this is a good video. I bet your friend was happy to see this black car back on the road clean as hell. Good video!
Yeah he really was!! Its crazy though how a detail can make the car look like new again, even though the car can be old, like the 03 G from the video. Cheers man!!
Everyone keeps saying this guy is doing this wrong but he’s actually doing it correctly. This car has a severely neglected paint job and is littered with contaminates. The clay will remove those contaminates but they get caught in the clay bar, and the clay bar is repeatedly dragged across the paint. Unfortunately, a severely neglected paint job like this WILL scratch when you clay bar it. They is no way around that. But it can be buffed out during polishing.
You should use Iron X or something similar first to remove most of the embedded particles like tar, brake dust, and other contaminants. It's going to prevent those marring. Using car soap instead of spray detailer will be better because spray detailer contains oils that can ruin the clay and make it kinda like it is melting based from my experience.
How the hell did you scratch the hood with a clay bar?? You’re pushing way to hard and doing an area to big before you fold and not twist the clay. If you clay bar a car properly the paint will not scratch.
The light scratching comes from the cay bar being overwhelmed by contaminants, turning the clay into "sandpaper". I bet a solvent body prep used first would have removed the majority and saved the clay bar too. I ran across this same issue with a new F250 and Porsche Boxster. Great video man!!
Not sure if anyone else had mentioned it, use mothers mag and aluminium polish with your DA polisher on the headlights. Works like a charm and won't harm paint. So after playing and Buffing, what did you do to degrease/decontaminate before applying the ceramic coating? Car looks great.
You should have polished the headlight 1000,1500,3000, Grit sandpaper and compound and Polish then throw some clear on there and it'll look good as new
Gabe Lopez thats a fact! I do when they look oxidized like that. Especially on a black car. They stand out even more so when the car is buffed and shiny
I love your paint correction videos. It'd be great if you made an updated, step by step video showing what pad u put on to what compound your using, how much you use, what to look for and even an estimate to how much it cost you to detail the exterior of of an entire car.
Good job man. Sometimes scratches are unavoidable when using aggressive clay on a horrid surface. It happens. That's why we compound and polish afterwards. It bugs me seeing so many "detailers" try to criticize instead of just saying "good job".
why is this video still up ? Make a update video and show how to do it properly or some people may go out and damage there paint. i have watched a few of your videos and trusted them but now i dont know if i should.
milanmastracci when useing a claybar on car paint (hard or soft paint) when done properly it should not scratch the paint. i think you used a bit too much pressure and not enough clay lube. i have worked on cars with soft paint and exstreemly bad paint contamination and never scrated the paint that bad. its not normal as you state in the video. (sorry for any spelling mistakes or bad grammar its not my srong suit)
The problem is that there is no way he cleaned the car well enough. The clay bar should not come out black after a few swipes; the section is too dirty. That's also why he's scratching the car... It's a black car, that seems to have sat outdoors and was never washed.
milanmastracci it's funny you ask that when in response to another comment you admit to using bad technique when using the clay bar because you were going to polish it all anyways, so it can be somewhat misleading to say that these results are normal then go on to say that you used the wrong technique for claying, then ask what was wrong with the video.
I agree, that's nasty! You did a great job getting it back into shape. How long did it take from start to finish? I would suggest that you knead the clay much more often, apply no pressure and use a lot more lube - at that level of contamination, I'd use soapy water to save some cash.
I didn't know about "claying" thanks for teaching that! I had always been taught to use a chemical cleaner to remove that crap from the finish and it always took off just a little paint when it was used. Your clay gets the crap off without removing paint!
Chrisfix channel shows you how to buff the headlights to look brand new. Your customers would probably go bananas for you to detail the lights as well.
I’ve been detailing for about 8 years and I am sorry but clay does not induce scratch onto surface, it may mar the paint but should NOT scratch the paint. This is where iron remover, tar remover, traffic film remover, wax remover come to play. After all that you will Clay bar the clear coat, the problem with scratching the clear with clay bar is you may induce deep scratches that you will NOT be able to polish afterwords. Don’t take it the wrong way, just my opinion. Happy detailing!
Being a detailer for over 4 years now I’ve never scratched a car while clay baring, please let the clay do all the work and apply little to no pressure and WAYYYYY more lubrication
Yeah I know!! But at this point when they're hazy, you can spend the time and bit of money to fixing them, or look for a better aftermarket set that have projectors in them.
I'm going to try and wetsand my headlights (they are a decade old). If it goes well I will keep them but I'd be just as happy if I had a reason to buy some LED Halo's.
Noflik what needs to be done was a sealnt should have been applied on them, and whenever you wax or quickwax your car after wash apply on the headlights to protect them from the elements
I've clayed and polish many cars and I've never marred a car that bad after claying. You might want to use more lubricant and or less pressure so you don't damage the paint as much.
And all the years I have clayed cars I have never had that kind of marring from using clay you need to use a lot of lube so there is no drag from the Clay. Forget even using clay use the new wash mits that does the job for you.
Used something very similar that when in contact u could see the rusty material running off the surface just like in ur vid,but still had to clay bar as the solution only acts as a break down agent but thanks. That was also about 4-5 yrs ago. Technology has come along ways since then as it seems to almost every other day.Love the vids.
It looks like residues from over sprayed clear coat that's often left at repair shops - Not really "contamination", it accumulates a lot of dirt because the surface gets very rough. The scuff marks in this case would be okay since it requires some extra effort to take off the residues and the process itself damages the surface. I'd recommend wet-sanding it down with 1200-2000 grit then polishing. Great job, looked great at the end.
Question for the Pros who do this. I am new to this, just cleaning up the paint on my Daughters car to make it look better. The auto paint supply shop said to use yellow clay, as blue clay would be abrasive and scratch. They also said to do a small section say 6"by 6" and then rework the clay. Did not seem to have scratches and damage this paint had.Question being, were they correct saying blue clay is more abrasive than yellow clay?
Looks top notch! those headlights you could have wet sanded with 3000 grit paper then used the same compound and polish as the car and they'd have come up like new! ;)
Nice work (y) , just a little question, how many pads did you use to complete the entire car? I mean, how often do you change them while machine polishing?
I work at a vw dealership and I see way worse cars than that every day and they want a full detail in one day full paint correction and interior. Also I've clayed very aggressively before and never had scratches like that before
There's alot of people in these comments hating on this guy for doing it wrong, but I just don't see it. He's using plenty of lube, and he's holding the clay with his fingertips so he can't be using that much pressure. I think it's just that this car is so filthy and whatever it's contaminated with is so hard and abrasive. That piece of clay looks darker after rubbing it a few times than it does after doing my whole hood.
He was using too much pressure though, you can see it in how it bows/moves the hood. You might save a small amount of time by using that much pressure, but you just mar and scratch the paint in the process. You've just gotta take it easy and let the clay bar do the work for you; ideally you don't want to apply pressure at all (other than the amount required for it not to slip out of your hand).
You dont use tar and iron removers aswell. The use of these 2 products should reduce surface deposits and also reduce fine scratches. But fantastic finish. Well done.
"Now, when I was detailing I didn't really go into much detail." Either this guy has gotten his poker face down quite nicely, or this was really a "pun not intended". ^^
Milan,People are complaining because they don't know what's really going on, and their claying experiences, which are probably few, are different than the claying process in this video. I can tell that there was/is NO OTHER way to clay this car on a timely basis with the specific type of contaminants that were on the paint. Good job.
This just realized that my car is literally worse than this. The owner treated the car very well, but never went any further than to power-wash the car. Basically the inside of the car is great, but the outside is horrible
No lie I was clay baring my 2006 Infiniti g35x for the first time...... 130k miles never garaged and east coast snow and salty roads. Let's just say It was like sandpaper when I wiped the clay on the paint. Great video man!
Yikes, mega marring. Oh well it came out in the end... Great improvement.Ive never clayed a car that bad before but seemed like a lot of marring. Thanks for the video.
I've never seen damage like this from claying a car. This should never happen. The paint should look better than it did before the clay was used if you clay properly.
You're supposed to clay really lightly, no pressure at all. The reason you've marred it is because you're forcing the contaminants into the paint rather than lifting them.
i dont get why the clay should be twisted (after you fold them). the clean part is now mixed with the dirty one and you might scratch the surface with the dirt form the previous section. i think the best should be to fold the clay, and use the clean part, and fold again, and use the clean part. by twisting them, you mix the clean part of wax, with the dirty. (i even seen these method by most professional detailers)
milanmastracci The paint was bad, but you made it worse. Almost no pressure is needed when claying, also you didn't use enough lubricant as you can see the clay dragging in the video.
Could you identify what the actual contaminats were? That much has to be overspray or something, but overspray usually doesnt mar the paint that bad even if someone were to do a bad clay job. Massive ammounts of iron fallout?
I know a girl that thought that since you could use a magic eraser to clean glass dishes you could use it as a sponge to wash a car.... needless to say that was bad.
I don’t know about you all, but I would have never ceramic coated that car with all the paint corrections needed still. Saw scratches and scuffs all over and the 3 rough spots on the roof that he mentioned. It was not ready for ceramic coating. As mentioned by others, the scuffing made by the clay bar is not normal. Use more lubricant and also rinse the bar before folding. You will eventually get the brown dirt back as you fold.
I’m rebuilding a 2005 mustang gt and it used to be a drift car and the guy that had it before me just painted over it in matte black without primer or clear coat. It sticks right but it’s a nightmare for paint correction
How long did it take you to do the full paint correction process Milan, considering you are an expert, how much time should a novice spend on the full process? Thanks!
From claying, to 2 step-polishing (along with clear-coat burn), to everything, it took me about 15 hours, plus products. I found the clear coat to be on the harder side of the spectrum.
I used to work at a dealership in detail. Some of the brand new cars we got in at some point was transported on a train and the panels that was not protected had metal railroad type of dust over these panels and was a huge pain to clean and only after hours of clay barring would the brand new car look like a brand new car.

Speechless, don't follow this guys advice. That is not how you clay bar a car.
Less pressure, more lube and you wont get the horrible marring you inflicted - gives you less to correct too... The whole point of clay is to apply the bare minimum friction, not force it onto the surface.
Cookeh ya iv never seen paint mart that bad from clay
Cookeh I mean that was really rough paint. He probably needed to press harder
You can actually see how hard he is pressing that claybar to the hood.. paint should never look like that after a simple claying..
MzNToS I'm talking about the white marring which can only have been caused by the clay bar. Larry from ammonyc said that if you're doing it right, claying should not leave any scratches whatsoever
sorry, but i wouldnt wnat you touching my car with the way you clay. that damage is not normal and i have never experienced that, ever.
Jay G sorry but educate yourself on heavily contaminated paint and educate yourself

use a solvent based tar remover, ironx, and strong apc as a prewash before you handwash the car then clay it before polishing.
I claybar my car all the time from brand new, no way scratching like that is normal!
No need to clay it every time, it's very abrasive so only do it when it's needed.
mazdarati2 claybars arent abrasive at all.
They can mar the paint
U don't need to clay your car everytime. Its not good for the clear coat
Well it needs to be clayed every time before applying sealant so it should to be done 1-2 times a year at least
I've been detailing for many years and I did the exact same procedure to my STi. When I first bought it, it wasn't nearly as bad as this infiniti. Bro I can see the hood going down as you're claying it? WTF
I was da rep for Auto Magic when Clay Magic was introduced I have never seen a clay do damage on clear coat in fifteen years
I’m so happy my old man made me become a painter in his shop when I was a young kid. I respray my cars when the paint looks tiered.
the car should have been treated for tar and fallout first....thats why the paint is marred by the clay
Anybody else with OCD bothered by this?
not that bad. but toilets thooo
Jordan F this video made me cringe.
Jordan F Yes!
Jordan F I am
You don't even know what OCD is. Look it up before claiming to be such.

really?

You scratched up the fuck out of that paint
milanmastracci it's funny you ask that when in response to another comment you admit to using bad technique when using the clay bar because you were going to polish it all anyways, so it can be somewhat misleading to say that these results are normal then go on to say that you used the wrong technique for claying, then ask what was wrong with the video.
I agree, that's nasty! You did a great job getting it back into shape. How long did it take from start to finish?
I would suggest that you knead the clay much more often, apply no pressure and use a lot more lube - at that level of contamination, I'd use soapy water to save some cash.
He's totally right, don't clay if you don;t know how to polish. And I say that in a way to help prevent you from marring your car.
I didn't know about "claying" thanks for teaching that! I had always been taught to use a chemical cleaner to remove that crap from the finish and it always took off just a little paint when it was used. Your clay gets the crap off without removing paint!
if you search up "worst detail job" your video appears lmao
That's awesome! Thanks for letting me know :)
Chrisfix channel shows you how to buff the headlights to look brand new. Your customers would probably go bananas for you to detail the lights as well.
I'm glad you said it because I was about to say those headlights are sticking out like sore thumbs now... lol
bro, your video and video description is on point!
Thanks man!! :)
what a transformation!! you are a very under rated UA-camr!
Share share share!!! :)
Awesome vid man im trying to break into detailing and your channel is awesome. Subbed
Being a detailer for over 4 years now I’ve never scratched a car while clay baring, please let the clay do all the work and apply little to no pressure and WAYYYYY more lubrication
I have never seen damage like that from any claybar ive used. What the hell
Get new headights? They can easily be polished to a clear finish.
Nah, G35 headlights are notorious for fading quick. Mine were professionally polished, looked 80% brand new, within 6 months they're back to shit.
Noflik what needs to be done was a sealnt should have been applied on them, and whenever you wax or quickwax your car after wash apply on the headlights to protect them from the elements
Richie, lol. Your detailer didn't use the best coating out there. The 'fast fading' thing only applies to the factory coating.
I cringed so bad hearing how rough that paint is.
Oh man me too!! At first before I felt the paint I thought it was going to be a quick and easy detail lol
I've clayed and polish many cars and I've never marred a car that bad after claying. You might want to use more lubricant and or less pressure so you don't damage the paint as much.
Love the regular uploads Milan keep it up :D
And all the years I have clayed cars I have never had that kind of marring from using clay you need to use a lot of lube so there is no drag from the Clay. Forget even using clay use the new wash mits that does the job for you.
MILAN ! that was INSANE ! i really hope he payed you properly for this kind of job . and should totally fix those headlights
Hey Milian! Thanks for the videos. Do you have a video that shows the 2 step polish process?
Yes I do :) Look up on my channel 'how to polish your paint'
Used something very similar that when in contact u could see the rusty material running off the surface just like in ur vid,but still had to clay bar as the solution only acts as a break down agent but thanks. That was also about 4-5 yrs ago. Technology has come along ways since then as it seems to almost every other day.Love the vids.
I agree, using a clay bar on your car should NEVER cause that amount of damage no matter the amount of contamination on the paint
Dawg if u wanted to wet sand the car u could have just used sandpaper
Bad clay job. I never had this problem. You don't need to put force on the clay let the clay do it's job
I have an 03 g35 as well lots of swirls and small scratches and was wondering how much will a process like this should cost me
Looks top notch! those headlights you could have wet sanded with 3000 grit paper then used the same compound and polish as the car and they'd have come up like new! ;)
Nice work (y) , just a little question, how many pads did you use to complete the entire car? I mean, how often do you change them while machine polishing?
I cant believe you only have 126k subs, you deserve 1m
Why didn't you just compound and polish the headlights? Would've looked so much better
Nice one Fella going to get my mates car ready for a car show this was very helpful
I work at a vw dealership and I see way worse cars than that every day and they want a full detail in one day full paint correction and interior. Also I've clayed very aggressively before and never had scratches like that before
OMG. The bonded contaminants caused all of those vertical scratches? Yuck!
Dude you are an amazing detailer!!! I have learned so much and can't wait to attempt to use what I learned.
You did it again buddy! Nice work
Thanks man!!
forgot to take out the orange peel lol
You can see the bonnet/hood flexing under the pressure he was rubbing it that hard.
Giggitygoo enough pressure to make the hood flex
This is how most of imported cars from Italy look like when they come in my garage, some of them even worse... :)
You dont use tar and iron removers aswell. The use of these 2 products should reduce surface deposits and also reduce fine scratches. But fantastic finish. Well done.
"Now, when I was detailing I didn't really go into much detail."
Either this guy has gotten his poker face down quite nicely, or this was really a "pun not intended".
Yeah its quite a difference what a little piece of clay and lube will do :)
Yikes, mega marring. Oh well it came out in the end... Great improvement.Ive never clayed a car that bad before but seemed like a lot of marring. Thanks for the video.
amazing video, keep it up!
Thank you :)
I've never seen damage like this from claying a car. This should never happen. The paint should look better than it did before the clay was used if you clay properly.
Great video as always. Always learning from you.
Cheers Adrian :)
Wow amazing result. I wonder how did you remove the oxidation on the hood or there wasn't an oxidation?
You're supposed to clay really lightly, no pressure at all. The reason you've marred it is because you're forcing the contaminants into the paint rather than lifting them.
i dont get why the clay should be twisted (after you fold them). the clean part is now mixed with the dirty one and you might scratch the surface with the dirt form the previous section.
i think the best should be to fold the clay, and use the clean part, and fold again, and use the clean part. by twisting them, you mix the clean part of wax, with the dirty. (i even seen these method by most professional detailers)
More proper washing before claying, and definately more lube when claying. You shouldn't leave clay traces on the paint...
Looks great. I see an Ontario plate. Are you from the GTA ?
wtf I have never seen a clay bar do that and I have done it to like 10 cars lol
Yeah this thing was narrrsty ;)
milanmastracci The paint was bad, but you made it worse.
How did you wash the car in this weather!? It's an icestorm in Toronto right now lol
and that g35 needs some wheel spacers asaprocky
Yu Studios you are so correct
I washed, detailed and basically restored it in my garage with a heater :)
wow, that's one heck of a heater you have! bravo :P
Just go out there and freeze your ass. That's what i do lol
Yu Studios 5
and
right on , i am a painter and tht paint bro looks so damaged you bring it back to life man .
I've never seen clay scratch that bad before
Awesome work !! Looks great.
You will eventually get the brown dirt back as you fold.
good lord my car is white but i need to clay it down i park under a tree at work great video man
I’m rebuilding a 2005 mustang gt and it used to be a drift car and the guy that had it before me just painted over it in matte black without primer or clear coat.
Try using this if you haven't... goes a long ways!!

I remember i went to a car wash and my parents didn't know the car was being scratched
