  • In today's video, we do some top speed testing with my 1974 Honda CT70. I swapped a high performance 140cc engine on it with a 26mm carburetor, but I'm having some kind of fuel related problem. We also install a stator, voltage regulator, and a few other parts from TBolt USA.

    To rule out fuel delivery/tank probs, run a known good source. Suspect vacuum leak before head, spray start fluid around gasket seals while running listen for revs to climb.

    I grew up with a Honda 70 back in the early 1970's and mine had the 3 speed trans. It would run all day and the speedo needle pinned at the 45 mph. Good little bike and took a beating. These clips bring back memories. Well done guys.👍👍👍👍👍🏁🏁🏁

    Definitely keep showing it. I would suggest trying a different carb. Or see if you can increase the size of the jet/orifice for the idle circuit. It might not be getting enough fuel at idle, so it eventually starves. And definitely replace the cap itself with a whole new cap. Can you locate a tank that possibly has a larger feed line? Granted, it is not a large carb or a large engine, but that fuel flow was miserable looking!!

    Very good, now you're getting somewhere with the CT70. I bought my Piranha 140cc motor for my '74 ST90 from Vince at T-Bolt. Did you happen to ask him about his recommendation for a carb? Same as the one I gave you after the last episode- Mikuni VM26-606. It will solve your idle problems and give you a lot more power. Exhaust is awesome, couldn't be better. But you still need more air/ fuel. By the way, have you tinkered with the idle air mixture screw? It's located on the bottom and right by the intake flange. Pain to get to, they even make a special flexible screwdriver tool to adjust it. Love your show, keep those great builds coming!

    I have a mini-trail 50 that was having similar issues recently. We thought it was the carb and kept cleaning things out much like you did. It would run perfect for while and then start acting up. It turned out to be a bad coil.

    • @gibbyrockerhunter
      @gibbyrockerhunter 5 років тому +1

      I am not a professional but I have been building and fixing engines for a while. That is very common. I am pretty sure it has even happened on this channel. Awesomely you can usually bake them and reseal in epoxy and you are good to go for cheap engines or classics with no easy replacments. If the baking dosnt work it is because the coil has shorted on the inside and is simply trash at that point(unless you have an crusty connection on the ignition side). That being said I have been fooled into thinking a coil was overheating when in reallity I just didnt realize the plug wire was sitting on the engine, so when it got hot enough, it would loos conductivity enough to where it just bogged at hot high RPMs. Out of the over 20 coils I have rebuilt, I have only had two or three that were actually shorted out internally.

    • @715101
      @715101 5 років тому

      gibbyrockerhunter great tips there mate, I will definitely keep an eye out for the plugwire issue, did the leads look otherwise ok or could you see evidence of overheating? I like to check the resistance on my leads periodically but I never put much thought into why they're failing😂

    Getting a throttle cable with correct 90 degree connector will help your performance alot since it is also most likely letting air in the top of the carb causing it to lean out at high rpm. The rubber boot on top of carb does have a function contrary to popular belief.

  • @ChucksCustoms

    My kz900 had a similar problem a few years ago, turned out to be the float height was set too low. Try raising the float height just a little bit and the stalling might go away. What's happening is during high rpm, your engine is creating a vacuum past the needle and seat causing you to get the proper amount of fuel to sustain it. However once you drop back down to idle, the vacuum stops and the needle and seat closes. Once the engine consumes the left over fuel in the bowl from the high rpm, it's now causing the jets to struggle to pick up the proper amount of fuel because the float wont allow the level to rise to the proper height.

    Check your shutoff on the gas tank it might be partially plugged up to where at your higher rpm's you are depleting the fuel in your filter faster than the clogged shutoff can replenish the fuel supply. also check and make sure the baffles in the muffler have not rusted out and partially collapsed causing a little bit of back pressure.

    I asked you guys does this bike have a petcock at bottom of tank? Some have a reserve and on or run position.Some have tubes with holes in them built into the petcocks.Res. is a different length so when it's empty it is lol. They get green or plugged up.I believe it is Vent and petcock as I suggested before.

    Did you try changing the spark plug ? Quick thing to try, and a failing plug can have some funky symptoms. One of my huskys had a bad plug, I was almost sure it was carb issues. Only ran good on full throttle. Changed it just because it was old, and I was going too anyway. Now she runs sweet as a button. Pulls harder then ever too, even though she seemed ok on wot before 🙂

    Hi guy,s...Try running the bike without the air filter to check there is sufficient surface area on decell as not to have vacuum build-up behind the venturi causing extra fuel discharge ? a quick easy test...May need a foam pod. Cheers.

    as i recall, those engines have a tenancy to pop air OUT of the intake at idle. Mine always did, even after many valve adjustments. Something to do with the amount of timing they require on the valves. I would raise the idle position of the carbs piston....then lower the needle, allowing the air to have somewhere to go. Worth a shot?

    Turn the fuel tap off just before it stalls, then kill it if you need to. Check the fuel level in the bowl to see if it's running out. Some carbs also have a nipple on the bowl drain so you can also put a clear hose on it and run it up beside the carb so you can easily see the fuel level at any time.
