Its actually a bit more varied. He usually swears on Odin when hes lying, but its also usually after he says Son of Olaf when he swears on Odin. But you are right whenever he swears on Artorius he is telling the truth.
Deep down Askeladd hates himself and knows he can never be an Artorius and just turned out like the people he hates the most; a VIking. And I think he really does want to be killed by Thorfinn, but he's not gonna give it up easily. That's why he's so disappointed with Thorfinn for being stupid and getting nowhere after so long. So he basically gave him the blueprint he used.
I don't think it's even deep down. He says it himself in this season to the Welsh, he is just a viking. He is just a man who is doing what he thinks needs to be done to save his homeland. He knows exactly what he is, and just sees it as necessary. He wants Thorfinn to be better than him.
Askeladd says to Canute "I'm just a Viking" So yes he does think of himself as a Warrior and a Dane. And that's what he absolutely hates about himself. In order to protect Wales he had to wear the mask of a Viking but in that process became exactly what he hates.
Askeladd really did expect so much more of Thorfinn. He saw that he was born to someone like Thors, someone who he sees as beautiful, where both Askeladd and his father are ugly by his own parameters; and on top of that beauty, he also saw the brutal nature Thorfinn took on when Askeladd killed his dad, and thought that might carry Thorfinn far enough along until he's able to learn what it means to really be a warrior. Originally he wanted Thors to be the man he followed, but when he realised Thors would refuse to lead his band, he wanted Thorfinn to be the Artorius, to be someone worth being his Lord. But like Askeladd said, he waited and waited, and the hero never came. Eventually, Canute came into the picture, and the same way the story changed it's focus, so did Askeladd. Thorfinn was thrown to the side and replaced with Canute. Askeladd didn't NEED Thorfinn anymore, he was abandoned for Canute because Askeladd was tired of trying with him, and I feel like a part of Thorfinn's growing frustration here is that he can likely, subconsciously or otherwise, feel that shift, and feel that Askeladd is losing his patience and willingness to go along with Thorfinn's bullshit, and that honestly must terrify Thorfinn. Chasing like a dog is all he knows, and if Askeladd won't even agree to a duel anymore? Thorfinn will be forced to either face his twisted sense of honour and just try to kill Askeladd in cold blood, or give up his revenge; both of which leave Thorfinn completely and utterly dissatisfied and lost.
I love this episode. It's such a gut punch to Thorfin, but I think its also Askellad trying to give a bit of a wake up call too. He helps Thorfin but he hurts him doing it.
14:52 - Interesting that you caught that. I had similar thoughts - I think Askeladd told Thorfinn his story because he wanted to show him that if you truly wanted to kill your enemy, you’d have to discard your principles and emotions and be cunning and nasty about it. There is no honor and mercy in revenge. Yet, Thorfinn still wants to battle Askeladd in a duel even though he must have had plenty of opportunities to take his head. 16:23 - I agree! The characters are the most interesting aspect of the show imo.
exactly, Askeladd described his life and reason for revenge - after all, his parent was killed as well - he knows Thorfinn's pain. However, he was more ruthless and honorless when killing his father which is necessary to archieve your goal of revenge - there is no honor in revenge. Honor is only present when you aknowledge someone as your rival. Please note that he didn't glorify his act of revenge or that he got a great satisfaction out of this. He just emotionlessly tells the story. The episode is called "lone wolf"- which is exactly what Askeladd became after this. He is always popu,ar and surrounded by people but rarely gives away his real thoughts and rather plays and manipulates people - which is why Bjorn's death was a big blow to him since he was a loyal follower to him which he might only realized now that he considered him a friend and therefore, Askeladd was simply not in the mood for Thorfinn's "childish" act of revenge - instead he told his story and - which is important - insulted Thorfinn and told him in ruthless words that he manipulated him all this time and made it understood even for the greatest of fools. You don't do this if you want to continue to have someone like this around adn manipulate him more. In a weired way (because he never had a loving father or parent at all because his mother was loki as well) he tries to protect Thorfinn from his revenge plans (but it is not that he caes about his own life). He wants Thorfinn to leave - that's why he tells him all that. He respected Thors for the warrior he was and being a loving father(sth. he never experienced). At the death of Thors you could see his respect for him [seeing the lovely bond of a father and child in the face of death or even the fact that Thors sacrificed himself for his child and crew left an empty stare of incomprehension on Askeladd's face at that time but gave him true respect there - Askeladd's father would have thrown him away to save himself after all] - even though he thought that Thors is naive and not smart (same for Thorfinn) - which is why he didn't kill Thorfinn all this time and rather mentored him. A duel means usally it is only over when one party dies. He is not able to give him emotionally/parental support since he never knew how that feels himself but he at least taught Thorfinn in his harsh way(since he had it harsh as well) how to fight and surive on the battlefield by giving him all these comments to improve himself. Also he always hinted at the topic of manipulation and even other people said this to Thorfinn like when the slave girl asked him if he is a slave too. But Thorfinn was too blind and stubborn to realize this and rejected this idea. He was never chained bodily but always mentally by his thought of revenge - not Askeladd himself! Askeladd always made it clear that he doesn't care if he leaves ("Are you still here?"). He could have left anytime- it was always Thorfinn who chose to stick around. Askeladd is always ready to atone for killing Thors when Thorfinn truly goes after him and time would have ticked for Thorfinn since Askeladd gets older and weaker while Thorfinn is about to hit his prime soon. But since Thorfinn has a good heart at it's core Askeladd thinks revenge doesn't suit him and will destoy him - making him the empty lone shell Askeladd is now and that's why he says a that stuff to get Thorfinn to wake up and give up on his revenge and finally beginns to live how he wants to and hopefully won't get manipulatd again by someone else since Askeladd told him this so bluntly. The frustation of Thorfinn at the end of the episode is peak voice acting btw. Also, he knows that the battle for the crown is right around the corner and maybe he doesn't want Thorfinn to be involved... This is my take away from the presentation of the characters here.
This is why Askeladd was my favorite character even though he wasn't an "honorable" person. I just think he's so interesting and somewhat tragic I guess. Someone who doesn't win even when he wins, if that makes sense.
It’s kinda amusing when Thorkell asked what’s the reason behind the duel. If he know that Askeladd killed Thors, i wonder does Thorkell gonna kill Askeladd ?
Askeladd may have respected Thors in his last moments, but in his eyes Thorfinn being an honourable fighter makes him an idiot, because Thorfinn doesn't enjoy fighting and yet he spent 10 years getting dragged along an still can't get the job done. Thorfinn loved hearing Leif's stories and wanted to travel from a young age.
For me, those final discussions are the coolest things about your videos. I love debating these things and extracting what the author wants to say or convey, trying to guess the direction, seeing different perspectives. I loved the reaction. Success and hugs.
I think Askeladd had enough after he killed Bjorn... he was having an aura because he was grieving and was like: enough with acting, enough with bullshitting. The other time we see him having an aura is when the king called him the forced son of a slave
People would be surprised how much Real history surrounding the Britons (Welsh) is actually in this show. Unfortunately, there is also a lot of imagination present. For example, Did anyone else know that Asser, who is seen in episode 12/13, was the one supposedly commissioned to create Oxford university, or it’s early beginnings by King Alfred Of England.
Torfin understands that his actions led to his father's death. Torfin keeps saying that 'Ashrad killed my father' and 'I will kill Ashrad to avenge my father', but to me, it seems that Torfin is constantly punishing himself.
Yeah it’s not really about killing Askeladd per se, if it was then he’d do what Askeladd did. When you truly hate someone deeply you don’t think they deserve anything, so you wouldn’t care about an honourable duel, you’d just take them out as ruthlessly and decisively as possible. Thor’s death made Thorfinn feel weak and helpless and he thinks defeating Askeladd in a duel or making Askeladd feel as helpless as he did then will repair that. He’s basically a kid lashing out.
Theres so much you can talk about this episode, but the MVP for me has got to be Thorfinn's voice actor. Absolutely kills it everytime. That final scene where he just comes apart still give me chills

@Jatin Chanchlani nah. It's fine. The dub actors do a fine job, but the bar is so high for the original Japanese voices, that it just is disappointing by comparison

@@thorkagemob1297 Yeah he has to introduce himself as the son of Olaf because that's who he his and who the Danes recognize him as
@@thorkagemob1297 Its his viking side for lies and Celt/Roman side for truth. Father for lies and mother for truth.

Someone made a brilliant video that stated Askeladd and Thorfinn had opposite and parallel character arcs during the show

One of the better episodes for sure!
Episode 18 and the finale are above it for me, but yeah, an incredible episode

Fun fact is that “Aske” in “Askeladd” means ash in Danish, and maybe in other scandinavian languaged aswell, im not sure though. Great vid as always
