My favorite part of this episode is how Bjorn points thr mushroom he is picking at Thorfinn. He holds it out to show him what ones hes picking because he knows if he tries to actually teach thorfinn then thorfinn won't learn it from him. Its such an easy seen to gloss over but he clearly wants to help Thorfinn survive
Askeladd is, to this day, one of the most interesting characters I’ve seen in anime or manga. I never hated him even after what happened to Thors. All of his dialogue, his entire attitude, while it comes off sarcastic at times it ALL has meaning. There’s nothing he does that lacks intention. The relationship he has with Thorfinn is one of my favorites I’ve ever seen purely because of how chaotic it is

Vinland Saga is a seinen anime. Generally speaking, shounen tends to be more simplified and more straightforward. While seinen tends to be more complex and cerebral. Seinen is targeted at a higher age range than shonen. The literal difference between the two, however, is the level of Japanese literacy required to read each type of magazine: shonen manga has more furigana reading aids for kanji characters than seinen manga. (Thus, seinen manga requires more knowledge of kanji=higher levels of education to read.)
Also, everyone in the manga community agrees that the big three seinen series are Berserk, Vagabond and Vinland Saga. They're all thought-provoking, realistically (in terms of decision-making) well-written characters, breathtaking art and a masterpiece plot.
i didn't know about the literacy difference between shounen and seinen, that's really interesting! thanks for sharing ^^ definitely makes sense considering the difference in maturity and themes between the genres
Seinen is either complex and cerebral or it’s straight up p*rn lol no in between. Regardless, meant for a more mature audience. Not geared towards teenagers.
They do not kill thorfinn because of the agreement between askeladd and thors when thors won the duel, askeladd out of respect for thors did not touch any one of thors family or village people
Askeladd highly respects Thors because he sees Thors as a very strong warrior who also lived in an unfair violent era just like him yet Thor is willing to sacrifice himself for others while Askeladd knows he can't achieve the level of mindset Thors have.
It seems like it's Ylva who really has that Thors personality and even strength. You could see how she strong she is from doing all those chores and harpooning the whale, and it seems like she has kind of the same temperament as well, whereas Thorin is more wild at heart. Also really love the discussion at the end, even though the two of you had different opinions, both your points were really good and this is why I've always thought Vinland Saga would be perfect for this channel because it provokes a lot of good discussions, especially later on in the seasoon.
Thorfinn definitely follows his mother's side more. Spoilers so warning His mother's side is from Thorkell and Sigvaldi, since she was Sigvaldi's daughter. Thorkell like Thorfinn is more emotional and though they can be smart when they want to be, they often don't want to be. Then on the other hand, Sigvaldi in Norse folklore was said to be more cunning and agile than much of a powerful warrior.
I appreciate the way in which Ylva grieves this episode, a lot of people are just in shock and denial at first but that’s rarely depicted in fiction (especially when it comes to female characters)
Hey Ange I can't tell you enough how much I LOOOOVE your cover from this opening. Specially that soft rift at the end its just *chef kiss*. Is there any chance of you making a full cover of it? 👀
Hi guys. Askeladd is translated from アシェラッド, which pronounce Asherad. And the meaning of this nickname is "a child covered in dust". I think it's much more like "Ashrat". By the way, love your reaction!
If I hadn't grown up in Europe with an interest in medieval history I wouldn't know most of the geography and timeline either (I still don't to a large extend) so you're fine to just learn things here and there as you go. Askeladd plays a very interesting role in Thorfinn's life now, sort of replacing the man he killed in a way (although way more harsh). Ylva is a very strong girl but no matter how tough or stoic you are, what happened will affect you either way. Love the shirt Ange 💪
Whenever Askelad lie he would start his promise using the name of his Father Olaf. But if Askelad use the name of Ancestors Auturios that's for sure he will keep his promise.
Always love your reactions. Been following since Arcane! One Punch man and now Vinland saga both great shows as well. Your discussions are often scary on point to what the shows hold in future store!
I am reading the manga and I am speechless such good story plot if I have to compare it would be second to attack on titan and the ost are masterpieces
I'm sure at this point you've heard this a million times, but if you like those series, I highly recommend you read Berserk. AoT and Vinland are both my 2nd and 3rd favs behind Berserk. It's that good in my opinion. Unfortunately it seems that it's the only one which hasn't received a faithful anime reproduction outside of the 97 anime. Though that's 100% worth watching as well.
I suggest you guys kinda avoid the comments section. Sure the AoT one can get messy with spoiler, but Vinland Saga "fans" really love to "hint" on something before the scene or plot even happened. So be careful.
I feel part of the reason Askeladd isn’t killing Thorfinn is because he has respect for fellow Nordic warriors. The village they pillaged was full of Englishmen and their families not fellow Nords.
