I think one of the most important things of this episode is that Askeladd says he hates vikings, but then he calls himself a viking. Shows that he really hates himself just like Bjorn said.
Bjorn and Askeladd really made me go through the experience of despising someone to understanding and respecting them. They're pillagers. They've killed innocents. Yet I can't help it.
@@CounterBoredom same most people hated him then loved him but i really liked from the start he is such a beautiful character rip lucius artorius castus ;-;
That’s how most people misunderstand Thorfinn’s character arc, his pursue of “revenge” was never literal and was only used to show how he was a slave to slaughter and sin in contrast to his dad. In essence, he is a victim of something else entirely, he would never be able to physically solve his issues
i love that you both are sympathetic to thorfinn at this point, a lot of ppl are quick to share askeladd's sentiment and call him an "idiot" too without considering thorfinn's full journey. askeladd's approach to killing his father was more "logical" than thorfinn's of course, but it would be meaningless for thorfinn to take that same approach, because the idea of an honorable duel is so important to him due to thors' influence
Thorfinn is so blinded by rage that he can't see what he really wants or what actually matters. If he really wanted Askeladd dead it would have happened by now.
How? cut his throat in his sleep?? that would dishonor his father so it's not an option for him. In a 1 on 1 fight Thorfinn never had a chance... so I disagree.
I wouldn’t say carried, because that makes it sound like the other anime of 2019 were shit. 2019 was a good year for anime not just because of Vinland saga.
There was hella good Animes in 2019...but the performance and character development in Vinland Saga was beyond a different level....the ending was a masterpiece :D
The difference is simple. Askeladd hates his father so much, he willing to do anything even pretending for 2 years before kill him off. Meanwhile Thorfinn hates is not enough for him to kill Askeladd in his sleep.
This show really made me go from disliking to loving Askeladd. Honestly though, at the beggining he had those "I've been through too much to give a shit" vibes so I didn't hate him for killing Thors. It's a dog eat dog world.
@Ruben Colon ??? Thorfinn is my 4th favorite character in the series behind Askeladd, Canute, and Thors. His relationship with Askeladd is where the depth and complexity kick in. He spent almost twice as much time with Askeladd than his actual father. Thorfinn himself is a relatively binary character at this point of the series and that is the point. This first season is the prologue and as far as manga content is concerned, he’s dethrones Askeladd as my favorite character.
I don't think so. You have to try to put yourself in his position to understand this. He was raised by the most honorable viking tales and the most honorable man, Thors. Askeladd killed Thors and now Thorfinn wants his revenge, and the only way he knows is a honorable duel because that's what honorable vikings do. Killing Askeladd in his sleep would be dishonorable, and dishonor is worse than death for your classic avarage viking. So Thorfinn stuck in here, trying to take his fair revenge but he can't, he is just too young to beat Askeladd in a fair duel but he can't leave or kill him in his speel either. He stuck in this horrible place and he can't escape, but he is not an idiot by a long shot, he realizes this that's why he doesn't want to hear about his family, because it would make him feel even worse, and that's why he screams at the end too, because he realized his horrible situation.
seriously? he's a 16 year old who has been traumatized and grew up surrounded by nothing but violence... your description is pretty lacking in empathy and understanding for his situation

He was my favorite since the beginning, the scene where Bjorn '' accidentally'' killed Floki's guards when he negociate with Askeladd was awesome

Askeladd is such a great character.
The voice acting of Thorfin grunting and screaming like was really good though.
thorfinn's character journey is so depressing

@Ren Takezō Go read the manga
But the manga makes up for it thorfinn character development is crazy
This episode was a gut punch to me. It felt personal.
