Thorfinn was sold as a slave as a punishment for attacking the King (canute)
He couldn't have gone unpunished so slavery was what he was sold into.
Which is actually Canute showing mercy, since Thorfinn should have been executed for attacking a royal

@@noona9193 That's because the section of the manga that mentions it has not been shown in the anime just yet. It should normally be covered during the last few episodes of season 2.
Nothing prepares you for what this season has to offer. Instead of mindless spectacle, we get top tier character development. Some of the best I've ever seen. I'm so excited :D
His character development is just becoming a copy paste of thors with no personality of his own 😂

Fun fact in the beginning it's old Icelandic ( or old Norse not sure ) mappa consulted the Embassy of Iceland in Japan for that
Studio change doesn't really matter with Vinland saga Season 2 because the core staff (the director, screenwriter, composer, character designer/chief animation director etc.) remains the same, so you can expect things to remain very consistent with Season 1.
You have of course new episode directors and other freelance animators but they overall don't matter as much as the core staff.
With Attack on Titan studio changed but also the core staff changed hence why it looked and felt very different.

Even the episodes done by the aot s4's team for vinland saga are freaking great and some of the best.
The Thorfinn reveal after waiting 3 years was incredibly hype.

One thing I really like with this episode is that the opening narration isn't in Japanese, but in Old Norse. Great attention to a small detail.
So to explain about the studio change, this is very different from the AoT situation. Basically the team that worked on AoT was WIT’s team so they stayed at WIT to work on next projects. But Vinland’s team was just hired by WIT to make Vinland Saga. So when MAPPA took over they just hired the same team to animate season 2 as well and thats why it basically looks just like season 1 because all the main staff is the same (Director, Character Designer, etc.). Which is a huge win because the director of Vinland Saga is a massive fan of the manga and really cares about how the shots are handled so they can give the message that the manga wants

It doesn't look just like season 1. They changed the artstyle, color/contrast to fit a different studio even though it's the same team. Sure the characters look the same in essence, but it's easy to spot the different especially with the lines and coloring. Both look great though.
But the argument that "it looks the exact same because it's the same team" has gotten so tiresome, and it's simply false. Know that i'm aware you said "basically" - i just wanted to clarify.
@@Celeborn93 Agreed. The style isn't as drastic of a change as it was for AoT, but that doesn't mean there isn't obvious differences. It's just a much easier transition. It's not a bad thing to point out because the team under MAPPA has been doing amazing work just as much as before.

This arc is one of my favourite arcs of all time, and the anime is doing it so much justice that it brings tears to my eyes just to think about it 😭
I love VS so much!! Thank you Yukimura sensei for creating such a masterpiece and to Yabuta sensei for bringing it to life with such a phenomenal adaptation

I really love what they did with Einar here. His backstory is anime-only but it makes you grow fond of his character so fast. If Vinland Saga adds something to the show that’s not in the manga they always nail it.

The soundtrack that starts at 4:39 is probably my favorite anime song ever. It helped me alot during hard times so hearing it after long time in this episode made me tear up. What Askeladd said to thorfinn in the finale resonated to me alot

Such an amazing episode, it's like complete story in and of itself. I just love how mappa has adapted this season in general, really took this series up to a genious seinen (which the manga already is of course). It just comes to show how the entirety of season 1 was a backdrop to the actual story which happen now.

even if season is a different studio, a large part of the crew who worked on the first season were working in the second too
Canute didn t want to hurt him but he still had to punish him in a way, otherwise his people would have seen him as a weak king, so i think he just enslaved thorfinn because it was probably the easiest way out. (he was a great warrior, even as a slave if in danger he could easily defend himself, so canute probably wasn t worried about him getting killed/hurt by his future master)

A stunning start to Farmland Saga
This is a stunning, heart-wrenching, thought-provoking start to season 2 of Vinland Saga. Meeting a new character and spending 24/25 minutes with him was certainly a risk, but it paid off in spades. We learn so much about Einar in just over 20 minutes and become fully absorbed in his struggle to survive and will to live. From a harrowing experience with his family and village, to being sold off as a slave, we are left to wonder where his journey may lead. All signs point to Thorfinn by episodes end. This was the best possible start to this arc that I could have imagined! Strap in, it's going to be top tier!
The anime actually made this betterr because they added a lot of original scenes about Einar's background thats not in the manga.
This is roughly over a year after the end of season 1.
The message in the beginnig is in Old Norse. It's likely from Hávamál.

Honestly when those raiders came to Einors village I was just thinking how Askeladd would wipe the floor with them and how this is the reason he hates Norseman.
The opening segment was in Icelandic, which is why you could see kanji on the side. It wasn't Japanese, which is why it sounded so different.
Thorfinn is 19 years old in this episode, Einer is probably a little older.

Remember back in season 1, I think episode 2, then the Englishmen attacked those bathing Danes? The first time Einar's village was attacked was probably part of that same event, although maybe not the same village.

Intriguing watching people experiencing season 2 immediately after. As much as I didn't want to wait, I now thought the long wait between the season was quite fitting for the time jump in the show and we had to reorient ourselves along the way with Thorfinn trying to sort himself out.

Though in a way Mapa technically isn't actually animating this.
Basically the Division at WIT that did Vinland wanted to make a second season at WIT but it didn't pull through so some of them left the studio and joined Studio Kafka and MAPPA.
So basically it's still done by the same people from WIT.
(Though there are a lot of MAPPA staff working on this season, but the majority is mostly from WIT era Vinland.)
Not sure if it has been clarified for you or not, but there's only been about a year time difference between the end of season 1 and the start of season 2. I guess Thorfinn just looks _that_ rough, lol. And the sequence in the beginning was spoken in Old Norse.

Idk how far have you guys are now, but yes, this is the Peakland Saga that we have been waiting for
Studio MAPPA has done an amazing job with this season, I was expecting the art to change a lot but they've kept up the quality of Wit very well.

While it is now MAPPA it is actually basically a transition of the same team from Wit doing it under a MAPPA production. So don't expect too much of a change in animation quality other than improvements!
apparently the same core team is on S2 as wit, so while this season may not have as fluid a anamiation as the first, the direction and general quality should be the same

It doesn't matter much if the studio changes, if the staff is the same. And in Vinland Saga the staff is the same
PeakLand Saga starts
WIT studios is in so much dept and is currently keeping afloat because of their parent company Production I.G. as a result they dropped a lot of the shows they were working on. The director of season 1 was very happy to see MAPPA give his vision of the series a chance to conclude and he stated before that without them season 2 was never gonna happen. The animators who did season 1 were just free lancers hired by WIT to do season 1 at the time so they weren't part of WIT but they are now full members of MAPPA staff so the animaton quality doesn't change at all it only got better with this season in my opinion
