Not only that, he was made aware of an error in communication, addressed it, and fixed it. This is what men are supposed to be my generation makes me sick
This video is the perfect encapsulation of everything I love about Paul Harrel, his seriousness, his dry yet witty sense of humour, his honesty, experience, skill, and occasional off the wall commentary.
Agreed. This is prolly his best video for the broad audience concerned about their home and family. It should be aired on Public Television. 'semper paratus' apparatus
My top 4 are the the 12-gauge auto-loader, the .45 long slide with laser sighting, phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range and the uzi nine millimeter.
hes got that attitude of no time for nonsense and its very nice hes straight to the point and very meticulous about being thorough and scientific about everything
5 men broke into my home with sudden and overwhelming force, changed the batteries in the smoke detectors, got all the cabinets with toxic chemicals secured, and left, muttering something about "instructions unclear."
Damn I suspected scrolling down the comments again would be worth it. And Paul still reading comments on a 3 year old video with 3 mil. views...the more I think about it the more I admire it.
Intruder: silently breaks into Paul Harrell's home. Comes past a corner and enters the hall. Voice in the dark: this is a _Winchester model 1897 caliber 12 gauge pump action shotgun,_ and is loaded with 6 rounds of _Winchester white box number 4 buck 27 pellet,_ now let's see what it does. Intruder: 💩 his pants.
@HEREWARD THE WAKE I just have 3 questions, and one statement. 1; who did you think had the time to read the novel you just wrote? 2; have you called the tech guy to fix your caps lock? 3; was this a whiskey fueled post? Statement: I don't shoot anything that was made before 1950, also we are talking shotguns, I don't really care about your 1897 .44mag Boomer gun, My shotgun is a AR Platform. Thank you for coming tho :)
I have a German Sheppard, but a 3am when the dog goes nuts what do you do? You grab a bat or gulfclub and go see what's wrong. If the intruder has a gun or even knife the dog doesn't work well. The dog wakes me up, I get the gun.
@@gdonnally1 but can a gun cuddle you and make you less lonely? But I agree with your practicality of the intruder threat. But at least in my life, things like fires, loneliness, and such are more likely than intruders.
@@gdonnally1 depends on the dog's personality. I've had a dog that I thought was not good for security as a guard dog because they didn't alert or bark. That dog kills anything in the yard for fun like a cat, I no longer doubt that he will already have an intruder ready to go to the hospital before I can ever shoot them in the night. Some dogs are guards because they are alert. Some just do the dirty work themselves.
As a former thug, I can second everything this man said. The 3-5 man crew coming at your house is only going to happen if you are a prime target. Someone who is known to have lots of cash or jewelry, like a drug dealer, a jewelry shop owner, something like that. Those people are looking for target that they can hit fast, take lots of small and easily liquidated goods and get out in a hurry. The much more common threat is the burglar he mentioned, that jealous ex or someone else with a personal axe to grind. Maybe the guy down the street who thinks you called the cops because his stereo was too loud. Maybe he thinks your dog pooped in his yard. There are a million possibilities, which is partly why it's so much more likely than getting hit by a crew Another prime security tip is to get motion lights and sensors on your doors and windows that make some noise. If someone breaks a window to get in and they hear something start beeping, they are going to haul ass most of the time before you ever need to get a weapon. It's the same principle as the dog, if with a bit less teeth. A point to add about the revolvers, they are great because they can be stored forever and still work. You don't have to worry about a magazine spring getting weak and failing to load, or the hammer spring failing. If you get a dead round, just keep pulling the trigger and you will get shots off. Those revolvers really are about as reliable as guns get.
Elthenar Revolvers are reliable and pulling the trigger again in case of hypothetical dud round will work but the dud might fire later... then the whole gun might blow up. Some revolvers might cope better with this than others but generally, wait 15 seconds with a dud or something like that to be safe, if possible.
Praying for you PAUL!!! You are a good man in general but what you have done with the 2A community is astounding... You are really one of the original 'GunTubers' that have helped sooooo many Americans understand more and more about firearms, saving lives, and understanding our rights as Americans. God Bless you brother!!!
Man I just discovered your channel. What a breath of fresh air over all the current tactitard mall ninjas out there. I feel like my dad is giving me good advice rather than some guy trying to sell me useless gear.
Brandon Mugele welcome sir. I couldn’t agree more and as you’ll see in the comments below all of Paul’s videos many of us feel the same way. This is by far my favorite place on the tube.
This right here is what i couldnt put into words in my first comment when i said it just feels "dated" this is dad advice all day. Trusted and logical.
After watching a couple of Mr. Harrells videos I've rated him far above the others in quality of information, little to no fluff or bs, common sense approach to topic. Very well done.
SuperSaltydog77 Agree as well. His presentations are to the point and well thought out. Very sound information. And his manner of speaking is assuring and believable.
I'll be honest, a break-in I experienced was 5 people trying to use overwhelming force. 4 big dudes with knives, 1 big woman with a gun. A gun with a high-capacity, decent caliber, and some range capability would've been nicer than trying to hide my sister and wounded roommate in a bathroom while I guarded with a cheap machete until the police arrived. Luckily the woman had no aim and missed my roommate as he ran for his life with a large stab wound in his liver. I don't expect that to occur again, but I'd rather be prepared if it does. It isn't fun watching someone bleed out who didn't deserve it.
@@HyperkalemiaSineWave By a hair's breadth and the grace of God, but yes. He was hospitalized for weeks and can't drink anymore. Lost 70% of his liver.
I have been so annoyed by the super aggressive obnoxious tacticool in your face crap. Finally someone who is realistic and logical about everything gun related, its just good common sense. Thank you Paul!
Are you crazy? Lasers, flashlights, ergonomic grips, picatinny rails, expensive night sights and optics are the only sane way to defend yourself in your own home.
I second that! Don't even own a firearm, but what I've learned from Paul is incredible amount of knowledge. Any knowledge is extremely valuable. And I appreciate no mid-stream ads. The man is seems as legit, passionate and dedicated as anyone could be to his calling here. A true public and American service here. He is the only you tuber I watch and am subscribed to form this genre. Thank you, Paul.

The dangerous chemicals in the house advice is so freaking important. My niece's friend (6 years old girl) went to visit a friend. The hosting mother at some point said she is going to the shop and be back in less than 10 mins. The two little girls then decided to shampoo their hair. The host girl picked a bottle in the bathroom and poured the liquid on the hair of my niece's friend and within seconds she started screaming in pain. It turned out that the bottle was an acid drain cleaner. It burned her scalp, face, and chest. She has had many surgeries but it still shows. Please be cognisant of what chemicals you have at home.
Are you sure it wasn't an alkaline (basic) drain cleaner? Just curious because I've gotten concentrated sulphuric acid on my skin (100% for non-aqueous reactions, thic like syrup, usually the main ingredient in drain cleaner) as well as very concentrated (like 10 M) HCl, both were mildly irritating abd caused dry skin. I wonder if I had let it sit longer if it would start to burn *I know nitric does! And no, I wasn't a sloppy chemist, I just had a habit of holding beurettes and staring at my expiriment. Sorry if my question seems unsympathetic, I'm truly just curious (I've always thought movies gave acids a way more dangerous reputation than deserved, now am double thinking that)
You can't own a firearm in Germany! To not be allowed to defend yourself from weapons that are everywhere is not really freedom ....its freedom to let any asshole with a gun decide when you die or if u stay alive, especially considering anyone their is a criminal if they have 1! I just don't understand that logic that says only criminals will have them basically... Well call me a criminal, just don't call me a dumbass with a target on my back should I ever have to relocate their ffs...or late for dinner.
I remember I just turned 18 when I watch this video and I still have my mossberg 500 back in 2016 to this day. Thank you Paul for all these years and rest in peace!
Paul is like that super cool teacher that you can have great side conversations with but will still fail you if you screw up...but he's still your fave
Yeah you might be all comfortable chatting and goofing off during class until he says, "then I had to kill someone." (screeeeech go the brakes!!!) Lol. "What? Open the text book? Yes, sir! Right away sir!" Haha.
Get the sound fixer extension for your browser, I use one for firefox and in cases like this, it allows me to adjust the balance, or switch to mono to keep equal output for both ears.
You can also slightly pull out the headphones plug until you feel the second "click". That forces the audio ciscuitry to Mono. You lose some quality but gain some sanity.
When I started to play this video, I was a bit skeptical considering the amount of firearms "experts" that are on UA-cam. Nice to see a rational person who actually knows the subject he's talking about.
Trust me Paul is as legit as it gets. He can get a bit annoying w/repetition that I think is often unnecessary, but what he says is gold. Nothing against you of course, but I'm often surprised when I read comments to the effect "wow I can't believe I'm just finding out about this guy!" and/or "he really seems like he knows what he's talking about.".
I literally just found out about this guy today from his "I'm Dead" that was just posted. Never heard of him before. I can already tell this rabbit hole dive through his other content is going to end up being painful at some point. I'm hesitant to continue. This dude seemed pretty cool. R.I.P
I subed to him 2 months ago. Its too bad that he died, I was starting to get into his content. RIP Paul, you will be forever a legend in the 2A community
You’ve gain much respect after watching this video. “You must prepare for the things that are more likely“, like those Poisons under the sink AND changing smoke detector batteries. Much Thanks for a realistic approach to protecting your home and your family.
I've installed electric/battery smoke alarms and emergency lights in our house. Fire extinguisher in every room. He's right about that. I went through an apartment fire, never been home invaded.
"Between 2 and 5 people storming your home with quick and overwhelming force" Was that guy teaching people to defend their home from burglars or the mob!?!?!?
Completely agree. Going out and getting multiple weapons for survival and protecting your family but not owning or knowing how to use a first aid kit is kind of missing the forest for the trees.
@MTrefiner yeah I could see your points and they're valid. Considering what you said it does seem like Paul draws from personal experience and Hickok draws more from just knowledge. You have to admit though, that Hickok just has a certain kind of charm which is endearing. In Hickox ability to shoot, accurately, pretty much any firearm is amazing. A collaboration between the two would be fun.
@MTrefiner No worries. We all have our preferences. Iraq Veteran is a good channel too. Thank you for the conversation. It is refreshing to have a well spoken, grammatically correct conversation with someone in the comment section for once. Take care!
@MTrefiner Hickok was a cop for 10 years. I don't know if that's what you meant from "real deal" or not. Paul does seem to have a more in depth of the workings of firearms and such. He definitely deserves as many subscribers as hickok.
MTrefiner that’s fine, I don’t care who you like. I was just stating he was also a teacher. I’m southern so hickock is more like the guys I grew up around. I also like the range he has set up at his house. I recently found Paul and I really like him too. You did mention you’re more skilled than hickock but you haven’t uploaded any videos..
My only comment on the dog thing is if you get a dog, take care of it. So many people get a dog "for security" then just leave it in the back yard. Brother in law used to go on and about how his dogs were great security. Spent the night at his house and the damned dogs barked all day and night. I asked him if they had a system worked out where they stopped barking when someone broke in?
Or they let their dogs loose to harass other people in the neighborhood. If you need an unfriendly dog for some reason, for heaven's sake keep it safely on your own property and keep it responsibly under control!
DaToNyOyO I was brought back to warn others of the subversive dictatorship currently occupying most of the worlds governments. Have you read my book Brave New World revisited? Its a must read if you havent. Not much time left! Peace and Blessings - Aldous
Awesome! Yeah, get a dog and love it - or at least treat it like you love it, even if you don't. It'll probably love you anyway. Having one and not caring for it well makes you a miserable POS whose face will eventually be chewed off by that dog, if not on this earth, wherever you end up afterwards. Cheers :)
A dog isn't just for christmas, it's for life. A dog a family member as much as they are "property". i love dogs to pieces, and you need to feed and water them appropriately and make sure they get plenty of exercise!
Well said! Many “people” should not be allowed to have a dog. I’m a Libertarian, and I want less government, but I’d like to see a law requiring a 40 hour class and a license (proceeds to animal shelters) before one can buy or adopt a dog. Chaining a dog in the backyard and interacting with it only to feed and water it daily... is like solitary confinement for these incredibly social creatures. I have no problem with “outside dogs”, but they need a fence (and at least two dogs as a pair can be much happier) if the owner doesn’t have time to really exercise them.
4:09 I am a survivor of a home invasion after spending the night at a friend's house one weekend. Luckily the invaders seemed to have only been burglars and did not appear to have been armed. When my friend's father was alerted to the threat, he grabbed a shot gun and did the "rack the slide deterrent" which worked. The burglars freaked out and scrambled. One went out the front door and one went out the back. No one was harmed, but we were all traumatized.
Score another one for racking works most of the time...Hearing a shotgun rack is terrifying. Any moron knows that if that person is good or lucky with their intial or follow up shot youre gone. Period. Which scares 99 percent of people.
It's not really the racking sound that's "scary". The shotgun is what's scary and the racking can make the intruders notice that they are in a big trouble if they don't scurry off immediately. Personally I would not want to be on the receiving end of some 12 gauge buckshot if I was a burglar.
I'm glad everything was resolved without bloodshed and im sorry to hear that it had lasting effects. but if it were me, i wouldn't take any chances. The element of surprise can be the only advantage you have against multiple intruders.
I’ve only heard of the “racking the slide.” Deterrent working once. When my Uncle was on the Highway patrol he was chasing a car in the middle of the night, the car had spun out and crashed into a ditch and the suspect had jumped out and started running through a field. My Uncle apparently not wanting to chase the guy in the dark grabbed his shotgun from the rack as he was exiting his patrol car and jumped on the hood of the suspect’s vehicle and racked the pump. The Suspect surrendered almost instantly, dropping to the ground like a sack of potatoes. I believe the deterrent worked in that instance because the guy was trying to flee instead of fight, if it had been the other way around I’m sure it would of been a different story.
It is so refreshing to watch and hear someone who is not only physically, technically and tactically competent but has some common sense. Thank you Mr. Harrell for good sound advie.
I absolutely LOVE the little PSA you included at the end; emergency planning should encompass more than just personal/home security. Have emergency supplies maintained and accessible, keep and maintain fire detection/suppression equipment, mitigate potential hazmat issues such as by separating chemicals which shouldn’t be stored together or in large quantities in a single location, etc.
Was doing a security survey on a private residence for a wealthy client a few years back and I told them that one of the bad things people do is leave ladders lying around for a burglar to use to access a second floor window which is less likely to be alarmed that a first floor window. The couple, in unison, looked out the kitchen window and there was an extension ladder leaning up against the garden house out back. Then the wife informed me that she was never worried about threats because her husband is a very large man which he was; about 6'4 and stocky. A moment later she left the room and the husband, a business CEO, looked at me and said; "I've never been in a physical confrontation in my entire life". and just shook his head.
Hey Paul. I must say, being a disabled American Veteran, and an avid long time hunter outdoors man, I really enjoyed your no nonsense video which in a short time covered so many important aspects of firearms and safety. Look forward to hearing more from you in the future. Thanks
You do a good job. As a former speech, debate, and rhetoric teacher (and retired attorney), I am particularly impressed by how logical, well organized, and sensibly reasoned your videos are. Your assessment of relative probabiity of threats was particularly cogent.
I agree; he speaks like a layman and not a former speech, debate, and rhetoric teacher (nor a retired attorney). I am particularly thrilled by his ability to function like a normal human being and operate a camera, the internet, and navigate UA-cam's uploading processes. Your use of the Oxford comma is mildly satisfying.
I say, as a current speech recognition and 'what the hell did you just say dude?'; can you interpret what you just said without being overly snobbish? (Currently a parking attendant....REALLY).
This was the video that introduced me to your channel so I figured it's only appropriate to come back to it now. There's a hole in the heart of the gun community now, but your knowledge and experience are cemented here in these videos and in the hearts and minds of all of us viewers. Your brother is a fine man, and I'm sure he will make you proud with what he does with the channel from here on out. Watch us, Paul, we'll see you again one day. Journey well and thank you so much for everything.
I don't often sit and watch UA-cam videos that push 20 minutes. But your videos command attention. You have common sense, experience, good judgement (imho), logical train of thought, you're well-spoken and you seem genuinely sincere. Thanks for the hours you've spent making, editing and uploading these videos so that we UA-camrs can watch them for free. Your efforts are appreciated.
"Drop safe" is important. My father's best friend was hunting with a group of guys. They were changing locations and one of the men was putting his shotgun, loaded with slugs, down in the bed of a pickup truck when he dropped it. It discharged and a slug ripped through the tailgate of the truck and into the femoral artery of my dad's friend. He was gone before they could make a 911 call or get a tourniquet in place.
Can't imagine the trauma your fathers friend went through. Something similar happened when my dad was hunting with friends. Dude dropped his shotgun, shot hit the truck and one pellet went straight through his eye. Luckily he only went blind from that eye.
My cousins were dove hunting. One flew low right between them. One cousin tracked it and fired right at his brother. He made it but only because birdhsot at 25 yards isn't as deadly. I was with them the year before and when I heard that I never went with them again. Not sure if they did either.
I really feel like that too. I Just found this channel and I love how down to earth honest he is... I remember one video... it's a very very big youtube gun channel, and the man was bashing on every single gun law and mandatory safety feature out there. One of his arguments against grip safeties was that if he was in a gun fight and he got badly injured in both hands and was unable to hold the pistol regularly, with a grip safety he couldn't hold the pistol upside down with his remaining fingers and fire the gun in self defense... he then proceeded to demonstrate this weird imaginary grip he might have to use one day to save his life. Or another argument for 30 round magazines was what if your house gets attacked by over 10 armed people at once? A 10 round magazine is not nearly enough and you'll definitely need all of those 30 rounds in case 15 armed robbers attack your house... I felt embarrassed just watching it
Unless Paul Harrell states that the best home defense option is no firearms on the premises, then he isn't "well informed", and he's directing his users into more dangerous situations than what they might otherwise be forced into.
Loved seeing the dogs at the end of the video, and arguably one of the most important parts of home defense. You can have as many tacticool guns as you want, but if you only realize you need to use one when your door bursts open you stand a lot less of a chance than if your dog perks his head up when he hears the latch on your fence in the backyard and you become aware of the intruder before they even enter your home.
Now this is what I'm talking about. Most reasonable home defense video I've ever seen. Especially the end. I love my guns, but the batteries and fire extinguisher are many times more likely to save your ass.
Those were awesome points he made. I've been to the homes of acquaintances who had safe rooms with an armory inside. Know what I asked? Where's your fire extinguisher? People rarely think about stuff like that, but the biggest gun collection in the world won't mean much when your dryer catches on fire and takes your house down, or even in the case of a natural disaster where you might have mere moments to evacuate your home (think: wildfire). I've been evacuated in a fire once and I didn't even have enough time to grab a pair of shoes, let alone secure any sort of weapon. Makes no sense to be prepared for a zombie apocalypse but completely overlook the odds of a grease fire in your kitchen.
Paul is the practical side of gun UA-cam. The jokes and banter are still there but this man makes solid points, and I appreciate it. Paul if you’re reading this thanks for all your work and assistance, stay safe
I love Paul's disclaimers about being "best for you" or "different people have different experiences which may lead to different opinions." I try to use them in my everyday life as much as possible. ESPECIALLY in relation to politics.
Been re-watching some of Pauls vids since he passed. He always ended with a segment that reeks of common sense and reason, sprinkled with humor. I hope his brother does a thanksgiving wilderness cookout this year to keep that tradition alive. Rest in peace.
I read the article. A guy attempted to run over him and his wife with a truck. The first attempt the driver missed them when they were at the campfire and the guy drove through it, the second Paul shot him as he drove at his wife... crazy situation.
@@sleeper.simulant7327 i think the "rack the slide" incident and the guy who tried to run over his wife were two different instances because he described shooting the guy in the truck with a rifle if i remember correctly
Agreed. Thankfully I've never needed my self defense weapon. I have treated wounds with my first aid kit, used my flashlights, pocket knives, multipurpose tools, etc. all multiple times in cases of need not recreation, often far away from home. Mr. Harrell is right - assess the threat and possible consequences, and be prepared.
@toulouse666 yep. That said, im not super praticed but was able to keep my CETME in a 10 ft spread at 100 yards at a shooting pit off my 'hip' (tucked into my arm), so I can see it.
This video perfectly sums up the simple genius of Paul Harrell. The videos are not overly produced, Paul uses a very basic and straightforward vocabulary which makes getting his points across very easy, his life experiences, especially that of his time serving in the military make every nuance of what he presents have some weight behind to make them stick and he just cuts to the chase and keeps the video straight to the point. Also as an added bonus is that every point he tries to get across does not only apply to firearms and firearm safety but they also can be taken in the context of life. Just like that guns are not toys, life is not a one big game. Sure there are moments in there where you’re having fun out on the range with your buddies for a day of target shooting and you get to have fun moments in life, but at the end of the day, guns are still tools that needed to be treated with respect and can end with some devastating consequences otherwise just to at the end of every day, you still have to get up and work to make a living and pay your bills. It’s just how it is and it perfectly sums up Paul’s videos to me. I personally do not care for guys like the demolition ranch and FPSRussia where it’s all about making a show out of shooting guns where to Paul, you can take a life lesson and valuable information out of it and for that I’m here to stay!
The end of this video was simultaneously super important and wholesome. The gun stuff was informative and masterfully showcased... But, it was the ending information that I took to heart the most as a newly married man with a relatively fresh mortgage. Thank you, sir.
Interesting to see others re-visiting certain videos. This is one of my favorites as well, especially around the 5:02 mark "I had to do that once and it did not dissuade anyone and I ended up having to kill somebody" Spoken exactly the way a Marine would say it haha
That's the thing that bugs me. I know he's been in the army and all, but all the vets I talked to never seemed too eager to admit (if at all) that they killed someone. He could've used any other term, such as "engaged" or "attacked" but he specifically mentioned he "killed" someone. Obviously a very possible scenario, but the way he casually says it puts me in doubt. And I would doubt anyone who just casually says this as I am rather skeptic on these things. After all, I don't think many people would be glad to have blood on their hands, no matter the situation.
@@pybroiii6155 If thats the case he's tough as nails. I certainly wouldnt be unbothered by it. Still, he seems like an honnest fellow, and I like his channel.
@@bobbinette3368 Ive a bundle of combat vets that say things either dead pan serious or within jokes about some of the shit they have seen or done. When I lived in east oakland I had someone jump over our fence to our back yard at night. It was a 6 foot metal fence that rolled open to drive my car in. It made a bunch of noise and my wife woke me up. This area in east oakland is a very dangerous neighborhood and people are murdered there almost every day. I grabbed my mossberg 590 and opened the door to the back yard. I saw the guy lurking by my car. I yelled at him to get the hell out of hear and he just stood there. I then racked the shotgun and this guy jumped over the fence like he was in a Nike comercial.
You're a moron to let someone run off who knows where you live. He could have been pissed off and came back with a group or came back and burned your house down. Its very foolish to just run someone off who has already crossed the line.
Also, you're just letting someone continue to be a robber/rapist/murderer etc...rather than weed out the scumbags so we can possibly have a functioning society.
I think the Cx4 Storm is the perfect representation of Paul's firearm sensibilities. Based on appearance alone, it doesn't look like his kind of gun at all. If I saw him holding it and didn't know why it's one of his favorites, I'd be extremely confused that he isn't glaring at it and shaking his head with disdain, as he generally doesn't truck with flashy sci-fi/tacticool/gunfad appearance. However, he's practical enough that he won't eschew a gussied up gun when it legitimately has all the functions he needs. He doesn't care what it looks like and he doesn't care what anyone thinks of him using it. He just wants the best tool for the job.
I’ve been compulsively shopping recently for things that I think I need for my house for organization and cleaning so like a broom and dustpan, gloves, dust mask, mop wipes, etc. and it just occurred to me that I always neglect the thought of actual safety and protection. Not to say it’s not rational to get cleaning supplies to make sure you house isn’t a mess but after seeing this video I’m definitely thinking more about buying working porch lights, backdoor lights, batteries for fire detectors, and even seeing if I need to replace my fire extinguisher at hom
Yes - I am an electrician. I have to put hard wired Smoke detectors in every bedroom . Every hallway , and one in every room in the home. They are all tied together. And I did it at home also . And fused Mechanical heat detectors . And fire extinguishers. My guns are in a 1300 degree rated safe. With all the Ammunition.
This is also my top channel. Most all of them help, but to get the definitive answers and info that you can use, I do not think there is a better source in YT.
This guy has the best advice/ tactical counsel I've ever seen. You can tell he knows his shit, because his claims are never one-sided. This is what modern defense-oriented thinking looks like.
A couple of years ago I had my front door kicked in at 9:45 PM. I was in the shower, wife and kids in bed. My Labrador retriever about tore that dude’s arm off when he came through the door. By the time I got there, soaking wet, with a hand gun, the getaway driver was pulling out of the driveway. I have many guns, have served in the military, and have ran through my home defense plans for years. Not once did I plan to be naked and in the shower when it happened. I did learn that a large dog is worth more than anything when that happens. They made it past my flood lights, my security cameras, and even my locked front door, but that dog stopped them. I learned a hell of a lot from that experience. We got lucky. I have found many areas to harden defenses since that happened.
If you need to have a light to see to reload, you need more practice. Muscle memory is a great tool for most anything and reloading is definitely one thing you should have it for. Reloading should be as natural as breathing, even for revolvers.
Well they aren't ACTUALLY banned...I imagine every firearm he displays in this video is legally attainable in Australia. It's just a freaking pain in the ass going It just requires an entirely unreasonable amount of time and effort.
Got this recommended... guns are heavily regulated here in Germany. You can't just have them. I mean, this is the country where a burglar can file a lawsuit against the owner of the house he tried to break in because he got filmed by a security cam without being asked... that actually happened, and he even won thanks to EU laws and the cam not only filming the owner's property, but also the public street, go figure - www.augsburger-allgemeine.de/bayern/Einbrecher-verklagt-Hausbesitzer-wegen-Videoueberwachung-id32307897.html (use a translator) :D
Dongyu Wu I think what he meant is, most people shouldn’t try to fire from the hip, obviously it doesn’t matter how this guy shoots at you, you’re gonna have a bad day haha
I dont know. I can tell you from personal experience that my home is regularly invaded by 2-5 people with overwhelming force. It happens when my teenage daughter brings her friends over. I find the best defense is to go to your den or man cave, lock the door and hunker down until the threat has left to go to the mall or over one of the other 2-5 peoples houses to invade them.
Started watching Paul's old videos to reminisce about him and the good old days, but I got hooked again! It’s amazing how the information hasn’t aged at all, and after all these years, I’m still learning something new along with getting couple chuckles on the side. One point to add to the part about dogs is their incredible senses. I knew they were sharp, but after getting my own hunting dog, I’ve been blown away by just how good they are. One evening, my dog was asleep but suddenly woke up, started pacing, and headed toward the front door. I checked, but no one was there, so I brushed it off as puppy antics. The next day, my dad mentioned that he had stopped by the night before but left suddenly due to an urgent call-he had turned around in my yard, about 10 meters (11 yards) from the door. That moment made me realize the huge tactical advantage of having a dog that can alert you way before you pick up on something yourself. Thanks for making me think about things like this, Paul! Rest easy knowing you've helped countless people stay safer.

At least he's using his experience very productively, giving people like us a better understanding of his thought processes after going through that so that we can better prepare for anything similar. He's very valuable in that regard, I don't know of any other guntuber that was personally in a defense situation.
I worked for an armored car company and they quit letting guys use long guns. A lot of the older trucks had buckshot damage to the interior of the windows, because guys were driving around with chambered shotguns and when they fell over they'd go off in the truck.
"Mean as a marshmallow" & "Tough as tapioca" ...now that's freakin hilarious. I rescued a pitbull from a shelter. She'd been there for over a year because she's totally deaf and can't see past 20 feet. She's sweet and kind ...the perfect companion for my Autistic son. Home defense wasn't my priority. The funny thing is that she has a reputation in the neighborhood as a 'scarry dog' and i live in a rougher part of Phoenix Az. Why is this? ...Because when shes out in the fenced and gated front yard and people try to call to her she simply doesn't respond, yet they've seen her follow my commands through hand gestures (short distance) and come to my call (using a buzz collar when I do so). As you said. Most criminal types are looking for the most payoff with the least risk. If you deter their plans by defeating them psychologically, you greatly reduce the danger/trouble/expense of having to do it through force. Your videos bring a fresh breath of reason and common sense that is needed and appreciated. Thank you and keep it up.

Dogs have the added benefit of protecting you from loneliness and sadness, far more frequent threats than bad men busting down the door.
@@Pikepaw that is why you get both.
@@Slades_Garage Yup! More than one of each, if you have the room.
There are a million possibilities, which is partly why it's so much more likely than getting hit by a crew
Another prime security tip is to get motion lights and sensors on your doors and windows that make some noise.
Good info.
Thanks
Well said...spoken of experience
Elthenar
Revolvers are reliable and pulling the trigger again in case of hypothetical dud round will work but the dud might fire later... then the whole gun might blow up. Some revolvers might cope better with this than others but generally, wait 15 seconds with a dud or something like that to be safe, if possible.

Good thing I knew how to read at 6 years old. Moron

Rest in Peace, Paul Harrelll. You were one of the good ones....
Traumatized? Like can't sleep at night and get spooked by wind and shadows?
@@abrunosON you're an inconsiderate ass
Yep the racking deterrent might work on dumb kids fleeing suspects and drunk home invaders with no intention of violence.
I saw it worked on a homeless guy trying to steal from a shop once.
Would have* sorry gotta be that guy

Such a vibrant person who clearly loved life. So sad he’s gone. RIP Paul.
Thanks
Good comment Larry, totally agree
Ignore the guy Steve, he's a dick.
Agreed!
"My name is Steve Hogue. I'm afraid of people with large vocabularies, so I try to belittle them."
He was gone before they could make a 911 call or get a tourniquet in place.
so sad
Can't imagine the trauma your fathers friend went through. Something similar happened when my dad was hunting with friends. Dude dropped his shotgun, shot hit the truck and one pellet went straight through his eye. Luckily he only went blind from that eye.
@R Schwartz um, either I missed the joke or you didn't read it but the guy died
My cousins were dove hunting. One flew low right between them. One cousin tracked it and fired right at his brother.
He made it but only because birdhsot at 25 yards isn't as deadly.
I was with them the year before and when I heard that I never went with them again. Not sure if they did either.
Legal penalty?
The least pretentious well informed source.
I felt embarrassed just watching it
@@rantanen1 The other guy was just concerned that his home might be invaded by a football team.
Unless Paul Harrell states that the best home defense option is no firearms on the premises, then he isn't "well informed", and he's directing his users into more dangerous situations than what they might otherwise be forced into.
P D you got to be trolling?
P D or maybe you were just mocking anti-gun rhetoric?
Loved seeing the dogs at the end of the video, and arguably one of the most important parts of home defense. You can have as many tacticool guns as you want, but if you only realize you need to use one when your door bursts open you stand a lot less of a chance than if your dog perks his head up when he hears the latch on your fence in the backyard and you become aware of the intruder before they even enter your home.
Now this is what I'm talking about. Most reasonable home defense video I've ever seen. Especially the end. I love my guns, but the batteries and fire extinguisher are many times more likely to save your ass.
Amen. Amazing how little folks know about or care about probabilities.
I couldn’t agree with you more. Well played Paul.
But it is nice to know we have the right to own and use our choice of weapons. Many countries do not allow this freedom! That's why we stay here.
True story. Some of the most important information in this video.

The youtube algorithm is one hell of a thing. We all miss you Paul, the legend.

5:02 holy shit he just dropped that casually. this man is incredibly. absolutely metal

"get the hell out of hear" -- I'd love to believe this is a clever pun, but ...

The CX4 Storm was the last thing I thought I'd ever want until I handled one. It's incredibly natural to carry and point and shoot.
It's also proven to be effective against the Cylon threat.

This video got me to purchase a fire extinguisher. Thanks actually.
Haha I was thinking the same
Yes - I am an electrician.
I have to put hard wired
Smoke detectors in every bedroom . Every hallway , and one in every room in the home. They are all tied together. And I did it at home also . And fused
Mechanical heat detectors . And fire extinguishers. My guns are in a 1300 degree rated safe. With all the
Ammunition.
Tbh I put that on a "buy when you see it" list as well now.
Agreed, and I went and changed the batteries in the smoke detectors.

Shower gun or what?

If it's too dark to reload your revolver, turn on the light and shoot a bad guy.
If you need to have a light to see to reload, you need more practice. Muscle memory is a great tool for most anything and reloading is definitely one thing you should have it for. Reloading should be as natural as breathing, even for revolvers.
