Ive had my Ruger 57 since early December and so far so good. Wanting an FN for years but the cost was prohibitive. I really like shooting 5.7 x 28(or used to before this ammo skyrocketed in price). I think Ruger actually improved upon the FN design, the thumb safety is more intuitive and the top cut slide is a nice touch. Mine has been incredible reliable so far as well, about 500 plus rounds through it. Thank you for this and ALL your videos! They are highly informative and always entertaining. I don't normally comment on videos, but I just wanted to say what a great and thorough job you did with this review/comparison. Keep doing what you're doing.
ditto1958 : "no interest whatsoever"..... Roger that. I've never been dissuaded from my P229 in 357Sig. (much rather have a SGD 125gr JHP projectile @ 1350fps ANYTIME !!) Never had a malfunction in well over a decade.
I'm in the same boat. While it might be boring as hell, 9mm has improved so much throughout my time shooting that it's basically become my everything caliber. I keep some 357 for my revolver (singular), and I've got a stock of 45 because I think the 1911 is an elegant weapon, for a more civilized age, but that's it in handgun calibers. Something like 5-7 is just too niche for me, I could only see having anything in one if I were a regular hiker/photographer or somesuch who wanted to minimize weight but have a gun for dealing with mountain lions, snakes, coyotes, people who are snakes, etc. Or if I were in an executive protection capacity where I was part of a VERY small team and the likely threats would regularly include people wearing lightweight body armor. In both cases, the mag capacity and the deep penetration/flat shooting would be useful. For literally anything else, I'd say that there is a traditional caliber, and almost certainly one of the big 4 (9mm, 357, 45acp, 38spl) that is more suited to your use
the reason someone might have a interest in the 57 is that more crazy shooters are wearing body armor when they go on a shooting rampage.goes through body armor and you get 20 shots that you can shot longer distance. But even if I get this I'll still be keeping my 9mm ,357 and well all of the other ones I have too.
Not a fanboy of the caliber though the ruger 57 has quickly become my favorite handgun to shoot. I'm not sure if you got an erroneous trigger but mine is nothing like that. Very little creep and not sloppy. Just an all around joy to shoot. Thanks for the videos Mr. Harrell!
Gotta love a mallet on the table in the initial thumbnail view!! The trigger pull and safety segment is great - side by side differences. Well done Paul!
Small brass casing group means well-engineered ejection mechanism, which means less malfunctions - the brass trajectory of his mag dump at the end looks quite clean. Watch Forgottenweapons' FG42 firing video for another example like that.

Good Video Paul! I enjoyed it very much. I was checking out both of these pistols yesterday at my large local Gun Shop. I am leaning towards The Ruger 57. Your Video seems to agree with my personal feelings regarding the 2 pistols. Anyway, Stay Safe Out There, as I live just outside Portland Oregon. :) 🥳😎👍🇺🇸. Beretta Sr.
I watch these videos for a few reasons: 1 - to hear him talk fast 2 - Im waiting for him to pull a grenade launcher out of his pocket to smash the meat target
The man has a steady hand. I was watching the trajectory of the ejected shells during the mag dumps, and they all followed in a row, like they were on rails.
That, and most people fail to grip a gun properly. I have seen people grip a gun as if they are afraid to break it. Meanwhile, you can find video after video of people running over several different versions of these fantastic plastics.
PapaPat .Patterson Some pistols are made better and they have better ejection trace due to the design of ejector, extractors, etc, HK is better than FN (personal experiences). And my FNX 45 TAC didn’t do it well, but my FN 57 did super well. But of course, his hands are steady.
@@MrTian1212 Yes I agree, it's not all about steady hands. I've had pistols that if they were locked in a vice and fired the empty casings would be spread out covering a 10' area. I once had an old 1911 that you had to take cover from the ejected brass, (that was before they started lowering the ejection ports).
Paul, I really enjoy your videos. Your insight and explanations are informative and appreciated. You remind me of the first man who ever took me to the range. Trust me, that's a high compliment. That was almost 35 years ago. That man talked to me the same way you explain things, clearly and straight forward, without being condescending, confusing and covered in BS. I don't think there is anyone else who even comes close to Paul Harrell in packing a lot of information into a video, such that when he suddenly delivers his signature exit line, the viewer experiences a moment of disappointment that it's over.
WOW! When PH was comparing the trigger pulls in this video with four, five or six different guns, that would be a great video of itself explaining trigger pulls:) I learned a lot for those five or six minutes:) Nice..
When Paul talks, and goes on to share his wisdom with us, there's only one other man/voice I can compare him to. And that is Larry Potterfield. You can taste the experience and love for the craft in their voice I swear...
And yet at the same time he gives an endorsement in that it is a gun/ caliber that he actually takes hunting. For large game no less. I think it would be a lot more comfortable with the 686, but I think it's popular to underestimate the five seven.
@@GunFunZS Well he took it hunting a couple times to try it out. I don't get the impression he regularly uses it for hunting. Of course Paul is an expert shot and has taken deer with even smaller ammo. The 57 gets underestimated because it's a small weak round. But a gun is a gun. Even a 22 is still a real gun.
This is one of the most professional gun testing presentations I have ever seen. The other testers come off as highly opinionated and immature. This guy has opinions, but he explains why he has them, and refers to them as a preference, not fact.

@@JohnDoe-sx2zk the round is designed to tumble. its actually safer than a 9mm round in regards to over penetration. ballistic gel tests show that consistently.
Ss195 and ss198. Everything else aside from the white box stuff and reloaded specialty rounds are only range worthy for the simple fact that these guns were designed to fire the sub 30 grain stuff. Not the 40 grain vmax and frederal stuff.
@@ajm5007 the only reason it's so expensive is that people are willing to pay. Now that the Ruger is an actual competitor to the FiveseveN, FN will have to figure out a new price point. I bet other manufacturers will release their own 5.7 pistols soon too, and then FN will be left even more in the dust.
Well now free market will( should) have FN bring price down. And add better sights out of the box. Proper fully adjustable target sights would be nice if not so bulky as to be bad for carry.

The P320 it is based on is not any better. Also, I got rid of mine. In my personal opinion, the Glock is better for the price point. Also CZ or Italian copycat but couldn't locate one then. Basically, SIG like Walther is overpriced and not necessarily better designed or manufactured. P250 was superior from tactical and strategic reasoning. Watching the meat target dance when that .357 hammers it never gets old. Great video
That was my biggest takeaway..................save up for a 6" .357, and skip the 5.7 altogether.
One, of many, reasons I carry a 686-6 everyday.
Really puts things into perspective.
The 5.7 is nothing to write home about. I'd much rather stick with bigger traditional calibers.
You are one of my favorite people to watch. You have a different approach to your reviews, and I definitely like it. Please dont change. You rock ✊
I don't normally comment on videos, but I just wanted to say what a great and thorough job you did with this review/comparison. Keep doing what you're doing.
Me: I’m not trying to be a hater, but I just gotta say I have no interest whatsoever in this caliber
Also me: What a fascinating video, Paul!
ditto1958 : "no interest whatsoever".....
I'd rather see Ruger chambered in 7.62x25.
the reason someone might have a interest in the 57 is that more crazy shooters are wearing body armor when they go on a shooting rampage.goes through body armor and you get 20 shots that you can shot longer distance. But even if I get this I'll still be keeping my 9mm ,357 and well all of the other ones I have too.
Most shootings it has been involved in, that make it to the news, it performed very well.
Harrell!
Look forward to the Mk57 from CMMG then. It's available from them as a conversion or dedicated firearm.
I'll have to take a look at one then.
Outstanding comparison Paul
Thank you Sir !

Gotta love a mallet on the table in the initial thumbnail view!! The trigger pull and safety segment is great - side by side differences. Well done Paul!
When Paul Harrel rapid fires 40 rounds off hand, even his casing land in a small group behind the camera!
Rigid Liquid 945 sub MOA groups.
39..but yeah if you look at the shells,it must be a small pile of shells to pick up with one grab
Actually they land right back in the box, right side up to account for all brass expended
Small brass casing group means well-engineered ejection mechanism, which means less malfunctions - the brass trajectory of his mag dump at the end looks quite clean. Watch Forgottenweapons' FG42 firing video for another example like that.
the "new and improved high tech bullet fleece backstop" gets me every time!
Thanks Paul!
I was suffering from the NoNewPaulHarrellVideo virus but you just cured it.
I'm feeling a lot better now.
Denham Turton Good, because you narrowly avoided quarantine 🤣
In describing the trigger pull I found the word “unacceptable” difficult to spell without autocorrect, however, completely accurate.

I'm an avid shooter and even subscribe to other shooting channels but this was the first Paul Harrell video I ever watched and it was only because UA-cam recommended the video. Two months later, I think I've watched every video on his channel 😂
i remember seeing this guys channel and videos when he had like 30,000 subs. its so nice to see that his expertise and thorough testing and entertaining demeanor are netting him subs.
I found Paul's Channel when he had a hundred and Thirty-One thousand subscribers and have been watching him ever since. I too love the fact that the number is getting larger by the minute. This guy is great I appreciate his videos.
Whenever I am considering purchasing a particular firearm, your videos are my most trusted source. Thank you for your straightforward and in depth reviews.
400,000!
Congrats!
Time for another special episode!
A well deserved 500,000 is right around the corner. Should be 1 million.
If Paul says it's a Fifty Seven it's a Fifty Seven. Get with the program Ruger.
@Deutsches Brot - German Bread men are awesome, get over it
@Deutsches Brot - German Bread ohhh I see what the problem is. You want Paul Harrell all to yourself. Sorry man, you'll have to get in line
@Deutsches Brot - German Bread Ask your mother, she knows.
I will notify FN as well.
:) 🥳😎👍🇺🇸. Beretta Sr.
Might I suggest, "Long and creepy like a Stephen Segal movie," to describe that trigger pull?
You can take that to the bank.
The blood bank.
"Languid" is also appropriate
I watch these videos for a few reasons:
1 - to hear him talk fast
2 - Im waiting for him to pull a grenade launcher out of his pocket to smash the meat target
# 2 HAS to be on the bucket list lmao.
'This is the meat target.....and this is an M67 fragmentation grenade duct taped to it so i don't actually have to throw it, for safety reasons'
I think calling it the "Fifty Seven" helps distinguish it from the Five seveN in casual conversation.
The man has a steady hand. I was watching the trajectory of the ejected shells during the mag dumps, and they all followed in a row, like they were on rails.
PapaPat .Patterson He probably has more training than the entire comment section combined.
@@MrTian1212
Yes I agree, it's not all about steady hands. I've had pistols that if they were locked in a vice and fired the empty casings would be spread out covering a 10' area. I once had an old 1911 that you had to take cover from the ejected brass, (that was before they started lowering the ejection ports).
Just noticed, 40 rounds and no safety glasses on the mag dump
congrats paul on hitting the 400k point! Great review as always.
You seem like a genuine, down to earth guy, who possesses a lot of knowledge and is willing to share it with the masses. Thank you, continue what you're doing. Because you're doing it right!

You be the judge.
No. But there is ONLY one.
He has inside him blood of kings.
He's not a current year man, he has achieved timelessness. Strive to be like Paul.
No, Paul Harrells blood cures vampirism but no vampire has gotten close enough to take a bite :)
Another outstanding, informative, comprehensive, and genuinely entertaining video!

I like how Paul quietly roasts the effectiveness of the 5.7 vs a standard .357 hp. For EDC.
Quietly? He pulled out a 357 magnum and blew up a sack of oranges! lol
@@GunFunZS Hunting and self defense are two FAAAAAR different things, with FAAAAR different requirements and conditions. They aren't comparable.
@@Funhaus_Ryan in the case of deer, hunting is more stringent...
This is one of the most professional gun testing presentations I have ever seen. The other testers come off as highly opinionated and immature. This guy has opinions, but he explains why he has them, and refers to them as a preference, not fact.
Explaining "the meat target" like Paul. Try saying that ten times as fast as u can, but then, "don't try this at home I'm what you call a professional!
Bought my FN five seven about 15 years ago, came with 3 mags and to this day never had a misfire.
2-3 thousand rounds through mine over 5 years, same results as you.
Any other kind of malfunction? Did you also have to go through a "break in period"?
2k rounds through mine with 0 malfunctions. Also, never had a problem with my sights. The FN is my most accurate pistol. Paul must have gotten a lemon.
MAC also did an elements test on it and the FN did bizarrely well, it doesn't look well sealed at all. Paul's gun must have something serious wrong with it.
deez1022: You know, you have to shoot it
:-)
Harrel speaking the truth yet again, always quality
side note: for defensive 5.7x28 rounds you want the stuff that goes at 2000 fps or above. Such as FN 198LF.
depends... you dont want to be shooting that round if you live in more dense housing situation
@@JohnDoe-sx2zk why?
@@jamesjohnson4159 disregard what I said. It's a really good home defense round
$1100 and the sights are loose.
$600 and the sights are fit right plus fiber optic. Shame on you FN.
In FN's defense, their version was designed two decades ago . . . which raises the question why it's STILL so pricey.
If you've ever drifted the sights out of a ruger, they must have a press for installing them at the factory.
@@Mister_Belvidere, with all the hype that Glock put into their latest (FLOP) pistol, the G44, MAYBE they can be convinced to create their OWN version of a Five-Decimal-Seven pistol?

@vegeta420z Except it says "Ruger-57" on the gun itself.
12:27 I’m really glad your M17 sounds just like mine does. Like opening a rusty barn gate pulling back the slide.
I am getting the impression the Ruger 57 is the "Glock" of 5.7x28 being more reasonable price, less bullshit and makes the cartridge accessible to people without multi-grand budgets
Jormundyr NIF I have 2 glocks, theyre great guns. Never owned a CZ but I know they’re underrated and people love them. Just wanted something different that was FS, my M17 hasn’t had any malfunctions though
@@proonguice8386 Haven't gotten much opportunity to try out CZs. That said they do shoot beautifully, when using a friend's.
Glad you have had no significant issues. Mine were liquidated right around the time that SIG was doing the "oops it isn't really drop safe". For a 650 to almost 700 dollar gun that was unacceptable period. Replaced both of mine with Glocks. So yeah, not a fan of SIG. There is absolutely no excuse for a manufacturer of that reputation to make that kind of a design fuck up.
P320 isn't as versatile as the P250. You can't go from large bore (45 ACP) to anything smaller or vice versa. Which when I got mine in the early 2000s when that info wasn't a published thing.
Hope you are staying healthy
Jormundyr NIF you too Amigo, best of luck
@@karkkosvolfe There is literally nothing glock does better than sig besides be cheaper. And for an extra 100-200 dollars there's a whole hell of a lot a sig can do that glock can't even with aftermarket mods at the same price.
You are a fine film maker sir. Kept me interested the whole time and taught me quite a bit about a pistol I knew very little about (FN 57) even comparing it to some of the firearms I'm a tad more familiar with. Ruger did the 5.7 right and affordable!!...you be the judge..👍🇺🇸
Hot Take: Paul's wit is as sharp as his shooting.
WOW...my compliments! One of the nicest, detailed and entertaining explnation shows I have seen so far. So much effort and attention to details while comparssing....🙌
Ruger claims the 57 is "pre cocked double action". When you look through the rear slow, and slowly press the trigger you can see it pull the hammer back a little bit before dropping..
So basically it's like my Taurus 738 pocket pistol. Not knocking it it's a sensible system.
My desert eagle actually does the same thing to an extent. I think that’s why people say they have a two stage feel to them. First “stage” draws the hammer back only slightly before it releases.
Also sounds like the trigger on Ruger's Security 9 which isn't bad either
It's to dramatically increase drop safeness I bet, at least over a true single action
Stop it. Squeeze the trigger on an empty chamber once. Great. Now squeeze again. Does it click again? No? SINGLE. ACTION.
