    I noticed you said not to give ivermectin, but that is the active ingredient in Heartguard. I have been mixing my own ivermectin and dosing at 2mcg ivermectin per pound (minimum dosage) and have had success with MDR1 carriers for over 30 years.

    I have to take my baby that I adopted from a shelter here in Georgia on Saturday to get her first heartworm shot and I am terrified because I keep hearing all the worst things about this drug so I’m just gonna pray over her and give her something to relax before we get there and just really do my best to take care of my baby I even have my mom coming over to help me out

    Thank you for the insight on treatment products, been a few years since our last pet. I am looking to adopt a rescue dog, (if a good fit) one consideration is a 2yr old (original home zero vacc or prev care) - - rescue said no symptoms but tested positive and turned out to have just finished a treatment in July (Immiticide & Doxycycline) now tested negative in January. Per most timelines it seems like they should have been tested for microfilariae in November? Perhaps because a rescue... Does this pup need to be tested again prior to one year mark just in case? Pup is in a loving Foster home and is bonding with the family (med to low energy, but could be situational) so I am wondering if stress of moving to a forever home would trigger some residual heart or lung damage on that sweetie and we should look to help out one of the other older pups instead. Either way I've gained needed info on prevention. Any input most appreciated!

    Thank you for this great video, I am glad that you said Proheart is a problem. Even if it is the safest, the problem is that for that one dog who shows a reaction to one of its ingredients since it is injected one is not able to wash it away ( for meds that are applied topically) or removed it emetically ( for the oral ones) . Hence the dog will either die or suffer irreversible damage.

      No problem! I think there can be a use for proheart, the biggest advantage is obviously that compliance is not a problem (don't have to rely on people to give monthly medications( . But I think the risks outweigh the benefits of proheart.

    Doc, MDR1 it self has 1 to 2 copy, so the explanation prescription still the same?

    • @DoctorDawson
      @DoctorDawson  3 роки тому

      Typically yes, but talking with your vet about other risk factors can be worthwhile, for example, if you're in an area with no mosquitos or heartworm to speak of, the risk of side effects may outweigh heartworm prevention, and your vet is going to know the risk factors. If you are outside of the US or Europe, sometimes the drug quality control can be suspect, so talking to your vet can be super helpful in assessing the risks of either heartworm prevention or not doing it.

    Can I purchase the interceptor for 8 - 25 lbs for my 10 lb Maltese and give him 1/2 a dose? Rather than give him a whole tablet which is for up to 25 lbs. which I will be giving him way more medicine and paying 2 times as much. Thank you Christa

    • @DoctorDawson
      @DoctorDawson  2 роки тому +1

      It isn't recommended to split doses up the main reason is that the medication isn't always equally split within the chewable tablet

      @@DoctorDawson okay, thank you Doctor Dawson. Another question, should I give my 10 lb maltese Bo the 8-25 lb or the 2-8 lb interceptor. Do you recommend the regular interceptor or the new interceptor Plus?

    • @DoctorDawson
      @DoctorDawson  2 роки тому +2

      Id go with with correct weight range, 8-25, the medication in interceptor is a fairly safe medication, personally we call more interceptor plus to cover tapeworms, however if he is on a flea and tick prevention his risk of tapeworms is pretty low, so I'd discuss it with your veterinarian

    Can I give my dog heartgard while he's on doxy for his tick-borne treatment?

      Great question, but you need to talk to your vet about that because I don't know your dog's specific health problems
