Heart worm Injections vs. Preventative Slow Kill (the cost, procedure, and outcome)

  • Hi peeps! As you all know I have a pupper who USED TO have heart worms. Well okay he's tested negative twice now, and all I need is one more test to be sure that he's negative.
Anyway, this video is going to take you through my experience of getting little Remi healed of his heart worms the fast way. There are two main ways that the vet recommends when it comes to heart worms: heart worm injections (which kill heart worms in a matter of months) or heart worm preventative (which kills heart worms in a matter of years).
I went the fast way and yes it was extremely expensive BUT I feel like it was the best option because heart worms are deadly if allowed to continue to live in your pup pups heart.
Remi is almost ready to be released from restricted activity and almost fully healed. The injections didn't make him go crazy. The worms didn't clog his heart and give him a heart attack. None of those horrible things happened and I think Remi is going to live a wonderful life now:)
Thanks for watching and as always, check me out on Etsy and Instagram!

i have just gone thru this entire process. My dog started the prednisone and doxycycline plus the heart prevention meds for 30 days ,mid January to feb 2023. 1st injection was feb 13,2023 ,then 2nd and 3rd was March 13 and 14,2023. they gave him tramadol and prednisone this week. he goes back on April 14,2023 for check up to see if all the microfalarie are gone. he was pretty sore and had a bad 3rd injection but bounced back. I'm definitely keeping him on heart prevention now.

Wow, you did a really good job breaking down the entire process. This will be helpful for those that are going to do the heartworm treatment. I also got dogs that have heartworms. Due to the cost of the injections and the fact that I have two dogs that are heartworm positive, I am trying the slow kill method. I started last month. For a long time, I did not even know the slow kill method with the preventative was an option. However, after watching a video on UA-cam called "Vet 101: Heartworm" by a channel called oldcountryvet, I was made aware of this much cheaper method of getting rid of heartworms. I would suggest anyone interested in the slow kill method watch that video. Basically, that veterinarian says that the preventative, while not killing the adult heartworms right away, does sterilize them, make them smaller, and shorten their lifespan. And since dogs have to be on a preventative to make sure they do not get heartworms anyway, it is pretty convenient to know you can rid a dog of heartworms if you are consistent with giving the preventative each month.

My vet said that if I were to do the slow kill, by the time all the heart worms were gone, the damage would have been done to my dog 😑😑😑 now I see that as a scare tactic because they don’t offer any alternatives to the injections. Praying for you and your dogs!

Actually, my veterinarian did not even mention the slow kill method. All they had ever mentioned for as long as I can remember was the treatment with the injections. Great video. Thanks. One thing I would like to add is how much Veterinary cost can vary based on where you live. When I had to take my dog to the cardiologist the tests and exams came to $560. People in other areas of the country were paying two to three times as much. In my area vet cost can vary from county to county. My point is don't give up. Don't be afraid to shop. Check your area for low cost non profit vet clinics, Google help with veterinary bills, I have never used crowd funding but it seems to work in some cases.

I have also gotten their probiotics for my cat. He has stomatitis and it’s helped him a lot!
He didn’t act any different at home. A lot of people said he wouldn’t be right mentally but I found that he acted exactly the same as before. I just made sure to only walk him maybe a quarter of a mile each walk (because the vet doesn’t specify) and kept him calm!

Some errors in here but overall a good synopsis. I'll address a few of the errors.
The doxycycline given for 30 days is to kill the bacteria (endosymbiont) called wolbachia... so that the heartworms cannot live. The bacteria is not called microfilara. The Microfilaria are actually the "baby worms." All heartworms need wolbachia to survive and reproduce. Doxycycline kills the wolbachia, reduces the pulmonary pathology associated with dead and dying worms, reduces the risk of thromboembolism, and disrupts heartworm transmission.
The preventative (slow kill) does NOT take a few years to kill the worms. Studies have shown that a very specific slowkill protocol (MOXY DOXY) is quick at eliminating worms. These studies are not shared with everyone because they get more money for administering melarsomine (diroban or immiticide arsenic injections.) But the studies exist and there will be more to come hopefully. This specific protocol utilizes the month of doxycycline, as well as monthly Moxydectin (Advantage Multi). MOXY DOXY.
Here are a few studies on the successful "slow kill" method:
    1. parasitesandvectors.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13071-017-2190-9
"This study demonstrated that this treatment regimen successfully eliminated D. immitis microfilariae by 21 days post-treatment, reduced heartworm antigen concentration over time, and had a 95.9% efficacy in the elimination of mature adult heartworms. Based on this study, we conclude that this treatment regimen is a relatively quick, reliable and safe option to treat canine heartworm infection as compared to other treatment regimens involving macrocyclic lactones, when the approved drug melarsomine dihydrochloride is unavailable, contraindicated or declined by an owner unable to afford the more costly treatment or concerned about the potential side effects.
    2. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31442887/
"Monthly moxidectin combined with 30 days of doxycycline eliminated circulating microfilariae within one month, thus breaking the transmission cycle very quickly. Furthermore, dogs treated with the combination protocol started to become negative for circulating antigens at 4 months from the beginning of treatment and all except one were antigen negative at 9 months."
"All dogs treated with melarsomine were antigen negative by 5 months from the beginning of the treatment. No dogs showed worsening of pulmonary patterns or criteria indicative of pulmonary hypertension 12 to 24 months after."
"Dogs treated with moxidectin and doxycycline became negative for microfilariae and antigens SOONER when compared to melarsomine in the present study and to dogs treated with doxycycline combined with ivermectin in studies previously published."
    3. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32866837/
"Based on the bias of diagnostic tests towards detection of female worms, we conclude that monthly application of 10 % imidacloprid + 2.5 % moxidectin for 9 months combined with a course of doxycycline twice daily for 28 days resulted in effective therapy against female adults in CHD. This therapeutic option may be particularly useful in cases where financial constraint or access to melarsomine precludes treatment of an infected individual."
    4. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33023664/
"There was no decline in cardiac performance of the dogs throughout the study. Overall, pulmonary clinical conditions, presence of worms by echocardiography, and enlargement of caudal and main pulmonary arteries improved after treatment. Physical examinations, complete blood count results, and clinical chemistry profiles were within normal reference values. Respiratory conditions were improved, no damage to the heart was observed, and the treatment protocol was well tolerated by the animals."
"This alternative adulticide treatment was EFFICACIOUS and well tolerated in naturally infected dogs. The injectable (moxy) formulation provides the advantage of having veterinarians able to administer, monitor, and assess the efficacy and condition of the dog throughout the treatment and post-treatment periods."
People are being scared out of slow kill but it's actually a completely viable option if done correctly. But of course the vets make more money when we shell out our hard earned cash on all of the extras like meds, upcharge on the melarsomine, observation, visits, you name it. Of course you can see an example here of what they charge......
Of course rescues cannot afford to treat dogs with the fast kill because it's outrageously expensive... so they use slow kill. And they use it with great effectiveness. You have to keep in mind that heartworms are starting to become resistant to the old way, with Ivermectin and so MOXY DOXY should be the first line of defense for slow kill and advantage multi should be used to replace other preventatives that utilize Ivermectin as to not continue the increase of the resistance.

    • @TheKayPitt
      @TheKayPitt  3 роки тому +1

WOW!!! Thank you so much for your comment and research. Sure enough I was scared out of the slow kill because they told me it wasn't effective and that the heart worms would kill Remi in a few years.
So, follow up question. You mentioned preventatives and suggested advantage multi. Is that the least harmful preventative? Or should us in the south just get a good mosquito preventative and not worry about a heart worm preventative?
Again, thank you so much for your comment. Very well written and researched as well as fascinating findings that are very encouraging.

@@TheKayPitt I have really struggled with this, being in NJ and adopting a dog from Texas where the mosquito population is pretty much out of control. With me being a super crunchy health fanatic... finding out that my dog was HW positive and being suggested to give her arsenic shots... I cried many tears. I had a few emotional breakdowns. I’m still very stressed out by it all.
The reason they told you that slow kill wasn’t effective was because the slow kill most often used contained ivermectin which has been found to be a medication that a lot of HW are becoming resistant to. Also, unfortunately, vets do not make any money off of you doing slow kill.... They can charge a lot of money for arsenic injections and all of the other charges that come along with that, as you have seen. It’s $$$$$$$$$$. They are happy to go by the AHS guidelines instead of an individual style treatment plan which is what we should be doing. The AHS is sponsored by at least 5 pharmaceutical companies so that should give you some insight.
Of course with the overwhelming incidence of HW in stray, shelter, and rescue dogs.... an alternative treatment has to be available. Many rescues successfully utilize slow kill treatment and they will continue to do so because they frankly do not have 2 thousand dollars to treat each dog with fast kill. Also, the melarsomine was on backorder for a while and they needed an alternative that worked. This is where the moxy/doxy treatment comes in. The studies done have shown it is a safe and effective alternative to melarsomine injections. So if it is appropriate to recommend as an alternative for rescue/shelter dogs, then it should be offered for adopted/owned pups too. Because it is a viable alternative.
HW has scared the shit out of me honestly. As someone that tries to avoid medication in general, for me, my family, and my dogs.... it has left me questioning my natural stance when it comes to HW. Since I am in NJ, it probably isn’t necessary to give prevention year round. But I’m trying to think of what I would do if I were to live in the south. That’s rough because the mosquito population is out of control down there and there are many reservoirs/vectors that continue to circulate the parasite without a chance of it slowing down. It is only getting worse.
Of course there are natural remedies but it really is up to each person to do their research and choose the option that feels best for them. I will probably give my dog the advantage multi for the next year and once she is negative for antigen and microfilaria, I will probably continue to use it until it is cold (when mosquitos cannot transmit) and then I will reconsider what we will do for when it becomes warm again. I know that my dog is not a vector now because she has had a few months of the Advantage Multi, and the month of doxycycline in the beginning of treatment. I actually gave her the first shot of the Melarsomine and I will not do that again. She did not do well. Technically she is supposed to be going for shots #2 & #3 next week.... with #1 being so hard on her, I have decided to switch over to the slow method for the rest of the time.
I cannot wait for the rest of the new research to come out because there NEEDS to be an alternative to those horrendous shots. They are not appropriate for all dogs. Many dogs can utilize the moxy/doxy and will become negative within 5-9 months. It’s not much different than the shots in terms of effectiveness as the studies have shown. Advantage Multi has the Moxy, and then they just receive that 30 days of doxy in the beginning. I personally do not like giving my dogs these chemicals at all, but there isn’t enough research on the more holistic herbal remedies such as black walnut concoctions, and the HWF from amber naturalz which is what I almost went with at first. I did actually purchase some for my other dog who has never had HW.
I don’t know what to do honestly. This is one of the worst things I have ever experienced in my entire life. To watch my sweet pup deal with this has been terrifying and stressful. Anyone who has will understand exactly what I am saying, regardless of what method they decide to use.
I’m still unsure of whether I’m going to continue to give her the Advantage Multi or if I am going to go another route. I hate mosquitos with all my heart and I have seen mosquitos land on my dogs who have been sprayed with mosquito repellant so I am at a loss.

@@northernstardoula6184 I am one thousand percent with you when it comes to medications. I hate giving Remi any medications and even for seasonal allergies I try things like hemp allergy aid and things like that to keep him off of meds.
I wish a holistic option was available. I just find it so odd that no one can come up with an alternative to the preventative. And what made me extremely upset was every time I went to the vet they pushed Ivermectin. And I would always weasel out of it and my veterinarian looked at me and said, “well we had a client with two yorkies that lived in an apartment and rarely went outside and they BOTH tested positive.” Like how is that possible? Should we question the test as well?

I know the vets swear up and down that they aren’t bad for our dogs, but then again they are the vet and they are selling them for a profit. So what I do is I have Dr. Mercola’s anti-flea, tick, and mosquito formula that I put on him every month and I also use Dr. Mercola’s bug spray.
But I want to be truthful. I found a tick on Remi just a couple weeks ago and it was latched on and still alive and kicking. So I’m not sure how effective it is. Plus, it was at the end of the month and I normally put it on him at the beginning of the month. So maybe it would be effective if I put it on more frequently. Let me know your thoughts on this too! Hello good afternoon great video My dog got diagnosed with heart worms but they recommend the slow kill because he’s too active and they think he could die from clots my vet said cost is around $2,500 to treat with the injections he’s in his second week of the docxy and all the other medications

    • @TheKayPitt
      @TheKayPitt  3 роки тому

Oh wow, well I’ve had that thought a lot that idk how you would keep a very active dog calm during the injections so that sounds like they gave you some good advice.
The injections did cost A TON! I think Remi’s injections turned out to be about 1800 😳😳😳 it’s brutal but it’s worth it for sure.
How old is your doggy? Has he had clots before?

I got a dog on craigslist from Eastern Texas. He is heartworm positive. I try the holistic approach of black walnut and armatisia combination, That did not work. Now I'm having to decide between the 3 injection or the slow kill method. As a nine years old German shorthair pointer with so much energy, I'm pretty sure by going with the slow kill method and letting him live the rest of his best life running wild chasing rabbits and squirrels would be his preferred choice as way to go.

10 dollar bottle of Black Walnut capsules and 12 dollar bottle of Artemisia capsules. Dosage is 2 black Walnut and 1 Artemisia once a day for 5 days then skip 2 days then repeat. When you see improvement drop to 1 and 1 a day.

@@babyhullk they (medical docs/most vets) don't share research on shit that's natural, cheap and actually works! but there are a number of vets online who support it and have proven it works. I learned about this more than 12 yrs ago and my female staffy is currently on this regimen after her brother died 3 months ago apparently from hw. I'm not buying it though bcuz whatever he had came on fast and he never lost his appetite. just started having fainting spells then suddenly lost weight. I put him on the treatment and within a 2 wks he was improving then I ran out. I had to order more and wait another 2 wks bcuz my supplier was back ordered and I cldn't find it locally. he just suddenly started having breathing problems one day and cld barely walk. I think he also had cancer and the vet never checked for it. he had a third lump in his testicles. my female tested positive right after I put him down, but she's very healthy. much bigger and stronger than her brother was. she's 7 now. I also give her turmeric and clove powder and ground pumpkin seeds on her food.

FWIW my local animal shelter has a rule where if an animal is dropped off there and needs meds/procedure or anything you CAN'T adopt him back. Period. The idea is if you can't afford the medical costs it would be not the best fit to give it back to you until the next medical issue. It makes sense to me but stinks to.
I was told when adopting to start an emergency account while my dog is younger. That way when things come up I'm not in credit card debt.
Be careful if you want to play the animal control adoption game! Plus that F's with your dogs mind. You abandoned them and now want to take them back like nothing happened after months? It's like a kid. Save money or don't own one.
