Steppenwolf's fight IQ is pretty damn high. We can see it at 3:45. First he intelligently defends himself, which any martial artist will tell you is the right move when you're not sure what attack is coming, but once he knows what these missiles do and that he's strong and fast enough to intercept them, he catches it and instead of launching it back at them, remembers that they're underwater and attempts to drown them using it, because he can see that three of them at minimum (Barry, Batman, Wonder Woman) won't be able to survive underwater. Had Aquaman not showed up, this would've taken out at least one of them, likely Batman who is the team leader, thus winning him the entire film essentially. Really neat how competent he is in the Snyder Cut.
He’s scary enough as he is in appearance and physique, but His combat intelligence & competence makes him an even greater threat. Thus making his defeat at the end of the film even more satisfying.
Biggest issue with this movie is Steppenwolf vs Man of Steel, the fight was super mediocre compared to Doomsday. It should have been a totally high octane fight sequence but we don't get any such extreme action. He just utters a stupid dialogue, not impressed and bam Steppenwolf axe dies in 1 sec and then he dies so bad next. Very poor progession and not great unlike General Zod, Doomsday. The third part failed in the 3rd act highly dangerous antagonist.
i love how wonder woman is just fast enough to recognize that barry helped her out with the sword. and that look she gives him seems like her thinking “damn, he really is fast.” edit: also the way her palm instantly grabs hold of her sword despite not moving anywhere else. she really is a natural warrior 😮

He’s also really good at psych ops when he fights Wonder Woman; he keeps reminding her of how she “failed” her sisters…
