I hate how in the Whedon cut, they trimmed this scene down to just "Hippolota gets box, Amazons seal cage, sends box on its way, Steppenwolf cuts his way out, continues his pursuit". There was ZERO tension being done that way. But here, it's "Hippolota gets box, fights Parademon that's on her ass WHILE Amazons seal cage, shots geld longer to emphasize struggle, cage sealed, falls into sea, Amazons dead, sends box on its way, lamenting loss of fallen sisters, Steppenwolf erupts from water to continue pursuit". On paper, that does sound more convoluted, but the execution gave this scene more weight.
Becoz the Snyder cut is too long and isn't supposed to be a one parter but would work if it splits into two. They crammed too much story in 2 hours, and probably would work better had they spread 'em out properly. And that doesn't count the fact that Snyder movie is soulless, sure, the action piece is pretty good, but in between the story lacks memorable dialogue and setpieces and could probably work better if they r given more time.

Basically we could've gotten a shorter version of this movie with the other Steppenwolf in the theater and we would only complain how we wanted the longer version and how Steppenwolf theatrical design was so bad. Instead WB decided to butcher the movie more than that

Well, in a manner of thinking-order-design (I don't know the better word for it), they only have one big door with a long hallway to the exit. Steppenwolf was already desperate enough with his mission to regain Darkseid's permission to go home, to strategize how to grab it sooner when the Mother Box was so close to him would not be his first thought, so he wouldn't be noticing the big terraced ventilation right above him plus the amazonians had already piled up on him so even if he did notice the big ventilation on top it would still be at the last second. Plus, amazonians unlike the ones in Josstice League didn't know Steppenwolf nor did they know if Apokolipians could swim well or breath underwater to know that he could still break out there underwater while the rest of them are drowning

The last time they fought the New Gods, they came via spaceships, not Boom Tubes. Thus implying that Boom Tubes weren’t yet invented by the New Gods at that time, hence why Darkseid never used them in the first invasion, and hence also why the Amazonian were ill equipped for an enemy with teleportation
