- Chicken Kiev, despite its geographically-specific name, is a dish of dubious origins. It’s no surprise, however, that it became an American darling in the mid-20th century: after all, it is deep-fried and stuffed with butter. Least healthiest would be some form of Chicago pizza... I think you lose like 10 minutes from your life with every slice. Your C.Kiev looked perfect and I will certainly give that a go. I think a side of sauteed button mushrooms would LOVE all that herb butter too.

This was my absolute favorite thing to eat as a child. Warming up the toaster oven, pop two frozen Kievs in and 55 minutes later.... man I miss these.
I first had it in a restaurant in Vegas that we quickly deduced wasn't really a restaurant but it had all our fave slavic foods so we soldered on and only my dad got a little bit poisoned

Chicken Kiev is legit my favourite chicken dish. It's also a great way to judge an establishment that serves it, because you can tell if they decided to cheap out or save time on any of the steps.

I grew up in Iran during the 1979 Islamic revolution and then the subsequent 8 years of war with Iraq. Food was scarce and anything Western was almost non existent. Then there was this restaurant called Sorento ( sadly it is long gone now) that served Chicken Kiev! This dish which was served on mash potatoes and a side of mix vegs was the most delicious thing I could remember from my childhood!

Update: I found a restaurant that does Chicken Kiev, the old Weavers House, a Pub located in Canterbury in the English county of Kent. The Pub serves it with many of the sides that Babish Uses in this recipe including serving it with Mashed Potatoes
My dad makes this for me and my brothers sometimes as a sort of special event food. His version has lees filling, and a crispier crust. Thank you for building awareness for this awesome dish!

Here in the UK it's considered a cheap meal, I can go get a pack of 2 from my local supermarket for £1.25 Inc tax.
Kyev is in Ukraine tho, I guess the recipe became popular across USSR, when it was a part of it

My mom was a 1980's microwave chef queen and she had a version of this called "Fiesta Chicken Kiev". The filling involved Kraft Old English Style Cheddar Cheese Spread, chopped green chilies and butter while the outside was rolled in crushed Cheez Its and taco seasoning mix and of course, more butter. Then the whole thing was microwaved to juicy radioactive perfection.

It’s occurring to me you could make this but instead of kieving it, you could make it like inside out chicken parmigiana? Stuff it with a little red sauce and mozzarella that would melt out when you cut into it. Serve it on some cooked pasta….

Pretty sure there is a mass market brand that pretty much does exactly that.
I tried this recipe and messed it up the first time but I tried it today and it came out beautiful. I forgot the garlic in the compound butter so I put it in the egg wash instead. I also didn't have tarrogan so I used marjoram, rosemary, thyme, and parsley. It felt so rewarding, thank you for the inspiration!
