scotty I wish you could help me out with my 2002 GMC Denali 6.0l idle rough I just cleaned the mass air flow sensor now waiting for it to dry and hope it fix it uuuurrrr
Scotty, I notice you don't use sealant on the gasket...do you not need it for this ? Or did you do it off camera.
Scotty i have a question .....my 2002 pontiac sunfire se 2.2 liter engine. I was accelerating but it like hesitates like it doesnt wanna go im pushing gas little to push through it and it go like normal again .... Im learning as i go but i dont know why its doing this and engine light isnt on so idk what to do im changeing spark plugs now but i was wondering if youd have any advice on what could be the problem
2016 nissan sentra sv engine like came on with the code P0171 (diagnostic trouble codes) and a most likely solution from power train system is to replace mass air flow sensor . @scottykilmer I need your suggestions
Yes, another new Scotty video is up. Learn how to fix your car if it hesitates while accelerating.
Ha Scotty! Me again saw video, done that! Mu jeep problem is the powertrain, what can I do? There's recall for that been 5mths.,waiting.can I fix it myself if so PLEASE help(97 jeep grand Cherokee larado 6cly 4.0 )remember?
New seal at the throttle body, too?
Hey Scotty, I have a 1999 Pontiac grand am gt. I will be replacing the intake manifold gaskets but was told not to use OEM gaskets because they are made of a composite material. What are your thought on this and should I go with a Fel-pro PermaDry?
yes, felpro are better
***** ionly can say bad mechanic
I like it when you start with a very simple classification of the problem, too much air or not enough gas. But it's experience, knowing that on that engine the intake gaskets fail, that allows you to jump right to a definitive test. It's why the more challenging problems are more educational, since the veteran can't take shortcuts.
The lobster isn't screaming, it just has a leaky gasket.
NOW THAT WAS FUNNNY!!
I just put the intake manifold gasket without testing it with carb spray. Glad to find out that I was right, the old one was sitting flat and it was completely covered with dirty oil. Thanks Scotty for saving the day!
Damn experience is really something, you make umbolting parts from the engine look so easy.
Scotty you're the man! This is exactly what was wrong with my Toyota. Car back to running with much better mileage and power now. This was a huge help to a nagging problem! Thank you!
Corollas that are old have this problem a lot and mine did (a 2000 with 275K miles).. It's a job for a mobile mechanic unless you have skills and tools and can remember what to put back and where... I'll never do it again, so why not just pay a skilled guy a small fee to do it with my Fel-Pro gasket. ??
Scotty, u r making me rich by all the money u r letting me save
Should also clean the throttle body and MAF while it's apart.
Mr. Scotty you just motivated me to do my DIY intake gasket replacement, you're now my guru :) keep being amazing sir! God bless you!
How'd you do haha
Just had this problem on my Escape V6, fixed it by changing 2 faulty ignition coils and all the 6 spark plugs, on top of that they also cleaned the MAF sensor and flushed out the air intake system. Now the car runs very well.
I think I can speak for everything in saying I appreciate your videos, your responses to our questions and advice you have given us . Thank you Scotty!!!

Thanks Scotty. Kid home for weekend, car rough with this code. Tested, as per your video. $8 and 30 minutes later running smooth. He can now drive 4 hrs back to school! Thanks again
thats kinda kool way to check for leaks in gasket. did not know about that trick..thanks
When I saw your video the first time, I thought.... this is just another crazy guy on you tube.... after I finish seeing your videos, I realized how wrong I was and now in my opinion, you are one of the most Honest Nonsense mechanic in UA-cam. I really enjoy your videos and have learned a lot from them. Thank you & keep doing what you do....
Thank God for Scotty Kilmer!
This helped ALOT !
My car was showing a P0171, So I jumped into youtube and saw this same clip, ran back to my car, did the spray cleaner test while the car was runing and indeed it afected the Idle and behavior of the engine while running.
Now after, observing colsely, in my case , it wasnt exactly the mainfol gasked that was leaking in the air. It was acctualy the injector seal that wasn,t doing its job (i have a 2.3l ford escape2006 and the injectors are on the front of the head), and a replacement of the dount shaped little plastic pices made all of the difference. similar to what you demostrated here but slightly diferent area hat was not sealing properly. any way it was trough this test that i found what was happening to the car, so thanks Scotty.
I had to do this on our 2002 Windstar. Just a tip to those of you who may attempt this - this video is exactly what you do, except if your intake has a coolant passage or two (you can tell by the coolant color around the hole), you must change the oil and filter before you crank the engine. Otherwise, you'll have some coolant in the crankcase which will destroy your engine bearings. As always, this is an awesome Scotty tip though -- those gaskets are cheap but paying a shop to do this simple task can cost a ton!
M respect to you scotty you, make me save tons of money by watching your videos.
if it were only this easy on all vehicles. spot on Scotty!
where is the customary grunting noise when removing something?!
i miss the "Uugh!"
:D
Great tip about spraying carb cleaner by gasket and listen for idle change! Probably an old trick but new to me, like using cheap cigar for vacuum leaks or spraying water on running belts to isolate noise..hehe
I'd swap the throttle body nitrile gasket...my toyo one was well shrunk/rotted after 12 years.& likely leaking coolant into air intake..just for added fun!
Thanks so much ,now I know where to look next for why my cars a bit sluggish... For a topaz that's almost 30 years old I'd expect it may be the problem, I already flushed all the fliuds, changed all filters, cleaned out the throttle body, new idle control motor, throttle position sensor, and spark plugs and cables.I'm still learning all this stuff, really appreciate your videos. no one will teach me cuz I'm a girl so I have to teach myself and I have fun doing it ...can't wait to see what you post up next

you are the man... gonna do this next paycheck... Got my codes read and found this video and low and behold this is my exact car so I have a feeling this might be the exact problem... Thanks again for a straight to the point video!
Hey Scotty I would suggest letting people know to spray carburetor cleaner on a cold motor not a hot motor some people getting too much of a hurry and don't think and they may accidentally not realizing it because they're not mechanics and it is possible right person to spray flammable liquids to check for vacuum leaks so I would recommend letting everyone know to do this on a cold motor
Nice the answer to my question lol , same car too , changed the intake manifold gasket and runs great , thx scotty
Perfect, this was served up to me, after I cleaned my MAF sensor for the third time. I suspected it could be air cleaner (but cleaned that twice) or vac leak, but couldn't find anything. Now I have a backup plan if this last cleaning doesn't do, I've been hesitant to buy new MAF but others say they do go bad (just unlikely for Toyota). If the light returns (or might anyway) can of carb cleaner is ready. Thanks!
Best mechanic and a veteran
Thanks for the tip. I have converted my -96 Ford from gas to E85 and not getting it to run 100%, fault p0171 keep comming up no matter what fuel pressure I adjusted it to. 3,5 bar was the most optimal. I did not think of the gasket, now I am checking that too!
Thanks Scotty that was helpful I'm doing my manifold gasket today also just did my ignition coils it's a lot cheaper doing it yourself.
Fantastic video. Simple explanation and relevant video of each step. No fuss no muss. Perfect
I just had the same code on a 2.3L Ford Ranger. It was caused by a loose connection at the exhaust manifold.- the replaced Catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold. A friend had replaced my catalytic converter and had not tightened it up properly. Replaced the CAT again, and all is well.
i already know my car probably needs a new intake manifold gasket i just needed some scotty enthusiasm to get me goin. 1998 gtp
I like how you keep it real
As always, awesome video Scotty! Thanks for the great tip about spraying carb cleaner (!) on the intake manifold w/ engine running to listen for idle fluctuation--a brilliant time saver!!!
My Corolla 2000 has the code P0171. Used FixD scanner, changed valve cover gasket. Code cleared for about 5 days now it’s back. Might have to try the carb cleaner and clean my mass air flow sensor🤷🏽♂️
Like your videos, but the wax in the Stingray badge drives me crazy.
it was the blue smoke that bothered me
Not that many people I know know that trick of testing for the leak..intake manifold cleaner works too if you don't have carb cleaner and doesn't leave oily residue :) If you can't find a leak, I've found spraying my MAF with electrical contact cleaner works well for the type without the wire
I just bought some mass airflow sensor cleaner... I'm gonna try that first and also change my air filter while I'm under the hood. Hope that does it... If not, this is my plan b.
Boss Hogg did that work? Having the same issue w my 02 civic
Scotty, a few things, is it important to disconnect any electrical lines? I've seen demonstrations of this where people disconnect as many things as they can and others where they disconnect as little as possible. Do you need to disconnect the negative battery line after the job is done to reset the computer to take off the warning light or will that disappear on its own after awhile?
SIr, I'm having this exact same error code on this same model of car. I've replaced both the mass airflow sensor and the manifold intake lines. What now?
John Albers fuel pump
Maybe fuel filter
Much Thanks! You Did it again Scotty. Once again I saved money thanks to you.
You have saved me allot of money man. Thanks Scotty!!!
thnx, just replaced the gaskets on mine just today; seems the leak was mostly happening in winter but was simple enough:P
Wow... you are a godsend, Scotty. Have the same engine and got that error code few months ago.
But, truly, you make very well edited, informative videos, I am a loyal subscriber,
My 03 Pontiac vibe looks exactly like this under the hood and have the same code. It idles rough and has low power. I also have a p0770 code for a transmission solenoid E
Just FYI. Revised intake manifold gasket is actually red. There was a tsb for Toyota for this specific part. Wanted 300 dollars and 3 hour labour. I did it just under 7 dollars and 15 minutes!
Also get the same conditions of air/fuel being too much if you had code P0174. Same idea with the carb cleaner to find the leak but the fix maybe entirely different.
OK thank u I always watch your UA-cam channel it's helps a lot. tomorrow after work I'm going to get me maf cleaner and carbon cleaner to see if there's any leaks
Thanks Scotty for all your help !
thank you SCOTTY! I think that's what my car needs.
Scotty is the freakin man.
The end with the lobster part was hilarious
Just as a tip.
If you want to keep the gasket in place while you reassembly, put a little bit of RTV silicone where the gasket sits. It will save you a big PITA.
this gasket actually has nubs in it and it stays in place just by friction. If a flat gasket, sure, sealer is great as long as you wait for it to dry.
CHECK YOUR O2 SENSOR BY THE MANIFOLD!!!! that fixed my light even tho the code says to replace maf sensor
Great as always. Thanks Scotty!
You make thing's look so easy.
My family has a 2004 Matrix. It's a great car!
I'm having this issue with my 2007 Toyota Camry. I'm hoping that my issue is the gasket because I'm excited to try this DIY and finally get my car back on the road. Next is figuring out if my AC has a leak (I hope that's all it is) so that I can get it fixed and not have to take it to the shop where they'd have to remove the entire dash. Oh and I don't have a lot of tools so if you could tell me which sized tools you used that would be great.
I used everything...smoke, carb cleaner, gas, hell I even went to the trouble of buying a tactrix cable and software and learned how to tune(perfect excuse I wanted to get my hands into tuning without being yelled at by my wife) trough the tune fixed the problem i was still hearing that whistle sound so I used common sense since you cant see air i got a scope and found out that the pcv valve hose was loose, makes sense since oil wears rubber out, so i could have solved the issue with a 75 cents clamp but i got ahead and put an oil catch can (another excuse) runned some cleaners, re-tuned the car and now i am making money tuning Honda fan boys modifications and got a perfect smooth running car!
Thank you sir will try it. I also have a 2000 audi tt that backfired and would not turn back on.
And a Saab that has a coolant leak I can't trace
man, you sure like money pit cars, those are 2 of the biggest ever made. check for blown off hoses and compression test the audi, and the Saab, either have it pressure tested or put UV leak dye into the coolant
Isn’t there a few other problems it could be? This video is great if your intake gaskets are in fact leaking but what if it’s the mass airflow sensor or a vacuum leak somewhere?
Thanks cause you make things look so simple.
Wow this is great! But what else do we check if the intake manifold gasket is not the problem?
many things, fuel pump pressure, low pressure does that, as does bad MAF sensor or clogged fuel injectors.
Dear Sir,
Thanks for all your vídeos. With your advices and lessons my garage tools gained new life and purpose.
Scotty Rocks!!!! Love this guy!
hi scotty, nice video, just a question, if the throttle body needs periodic cleaning, should the intake manifold also be periodically cleaned? thank you!
Ok but what if u have bank 1 and 2 system too lean. I've fixed the maf sensor. Fuel filter. Air filter. Cleaned iacv. Still idles low usually when I stop it wants to drop down to about 400rpm then goes back to 725rpm
I fucking love mechanics who know what they're talking about, cheers for the vid man;]

Awesome vid Scotty! Love your sign offs, they crack me up...
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!! I've replaced my PCV and have been cleaning my MAF and IAC with MAF cleaner but the error keeps coming up when I clear it...
I'm going to just let a mechanic look at it because of the complexity of my 2000 Buick LeSabre.(took me a day to find out where the battery is!)
Did you ever get it going??
@@bookoolicks2355 7 years ago, I don’t even remember
Also, when put into a gear, (drive or reverse), the engine has a knocking to it and when idling but not so much.
You are good at this Scotty.great video

Scotty you are a criminal killing those lobsters
Hey Scotty, I had the same code on my 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7 Hemi, I replaced bank #1 upstream O2 sensor, no help. Removed throttle body, cleaned, replaced bad gaskets. Found EGR valve bad, replaced. Started right up ran fine for awhile then code popped up for #5 fuel injector, replaced, runs great no codes!
My 2011 BMW 328i has a check engine light and both P0171 and P0174 codes. The mechanic said he did a smoke test but did not show a vacuum leak, and that the throttle body and intake manifold looked good. Replaced the MAF sensor but didn't solve it. The intake manifold gasket was also replaced. What are the common culprit(s) for this specific car?
Thanks, always helpful to have vvti specific info
I'm going to install it in my 2011 ford crown Victoria
Makes it look do easy. Brilliant video
for this code on my 03 accord was p0171 fuel pump but was not burned out just weak.
Thank you for the videos Scotty their such a help and I learn so much your the man bro
Very helpful
You make it looks so easy, just like frying eggs!
Thank Scotty you're the best....
Hi Scotty, great video thanks a ton. BTW is that a 1.8 Toyota engine you are changing the gasket on? Looks exactly like the Toyota engine in my Pontiac Vibe. Thanks again and Happy New Year to you and yours.
Nice video, Scotty!
Cool Guy! I like the way he explains things!
Great video Scotty!
Great video but where can I find this on a 2001 Chevy? Cavalier 2.2 l. SFI
Carburator spray are flammable. And when spraying to that hot area, you are not concerned about the fire?
Scott is always working on a TOYOTA !
what car was this actually?
i must admit, i like how spacious and easy to operate the engine bay is, and those gauges
It looked like a Matrix.
2006 matrix
If i use starter fluid, would that also show a change in the engine idle?
I recently replaced my intake manifold gasket on my 02 Celica. Although I don't have the check engine light or P0171, I can still hear hissing around the intake manifold area. The sounds like it's sucking air whenever I step on the gas. I only have a drop-in K and N air filter.
Thats evidently still a vacuum leak.
I thought you would clean off the mating surfaces and maybe clean the throttle plate because you already had access to it.
If you're facing the dreaded P0171 CEL code on your Corolla, and you've already replaced the intake manifold gasket and cleaned or replaced the MAF, but the light still won't go off, it might be time to bid farewell to your ride. Unless you're willing to dive deeper into the rabbit hole with some serious DIY skills and spare cash for parts, it's probably not worth the hassle. Trust me, and others who have been down this road before, you could end up replacing a ton of parts and still not get rid of that pesky code. So, be cautious and consider your options carefully!
Besides feul pump, nothing is THAT expensive to get rid of the whole car! Youre just being a lazy quitter.
Good video Scotty. Thank you for sharing
I sprayed my gaskets on my 2004 Toyota Corolla and the engine never raced, however, when I turned the car off I could hear a hissing sound and saw cleaner bubbling at the 1st gasket entry point.
Great stuff as always.
