Totally worth it, but you have to buy MAF cleaner and ONLY use that. You can damage the MAF sensor using anything else. Point #2, what Scotty does to clean the throttle is technically OK, It would be a better idea to remove the throttle from the engine so you clean it more effectively. This also helps reducing the possibility of crud and dirt entering into the engine when you spray. Just a warning about the throttle, most cars have an electronically controlled throttle like my car (2007 Mazda 6). If I were to push on the throttle like Scotty does to clean the inside, I would destroy my throttle since the throttle is calibrated to to a certain position by the car's computer. My check engine light turn on one day and I took it over to a company to scan it. Code came up with the mass flow sensor problem. We looked how much for each one. I was shocked at 239.99 each and not in stock. I ran out the door and looked up Scotty. Man I tell you what, I want to Walmart they had a $20.00 kit for throttle body and mass flow sensor cleaner. Sent an hour and took both intakes off to clean the throttle body’s. Then took the sensors off the intakes and sprayed cleaned both sensors. I walked away for 15 min and checked my work all parts were clean and dry. Put everything back together and took for a 5 min test drive. Check engine light as soon as I came off the drive way and a year later has not returned. Thanks Scotty!!! You saved me hundreds of dollars

Mine has a m.a.p sensor which requires a little care when cleaning. Car runs smoother as a result. Had a duff injector which made the 02 sensor stop switching, ecu detected misfire on cylinder 3 so replaced injector and cleaned the sensor and low and dehold it started switching again. It's amazing how one fault can lead to many. A scanner and a bit of detective work does wonders. Love your advice scotty.
Hey Scotty I maintain a fleet of trucks and heavy equipment. I found with our gas engine Chevy trucks that are drive by wire (no throttle cable) When I clean the throttle blades and move them by hand it will affect how the engine runs until it re learns the throttle position and will idle higher than usual. If I clean them and not change the blade manually it won’t have any idle issues. To be able to clean inside without forcing the blade open by hand I turn the key on push the throttle pedal down with a rod, the blade will open electronically and I can clean inside the throttle body without causing any issues.
Cleaning the AC coil is a significant positive measure. It helps to use a water solution of dish detergent to clean the coils. Rinse with the water hose. A soft bristle brush can help remove bugs trapped in the coil fins.

THANKS Up here in CANADA just discovered your page I apricate how you freely share your many years of experience. In the process of fixing up a 2001 Ford Focus Wagon SE with the 2.0L 4 cyl. SOHC 8 valves Fixing it up best I can since I had two vehicles stolen in the past year or so...with the help of your posts I am tackling things I would never have attempted previously.
When it comes to the first part about cleaning the air flow sensor and throttle plate, it seems prudent to leave it alone if all is running right. With my luck, I'd drop a screw into the engine.
I had a trainee do that when replacing an intake gasket. It was a good learning experience though because he then had to take the heads off to find the screw. It was bad for us though because we had to rent the customer a car for the extra day that it took to put it all back together.
Not really, it's a super easy thing to do. And I've seen them where the engine seems to run perfectly smooth and fine before, but was actually getting noticeably worse gas mileage until I cleaned it. And with the throttle plate... there's usually no screws to remove, just some clamps to loosen.
I have a 2004 Suburban and it had 200k on the odometer. It was idling rough, stalling at lights, running like crap. I cleaned the mass air flow sensor and throttle body as demonstrated here and it was like getting a brand new vehicle. The difference was remarkable!
Thank's Scotty, i've been a Millwright all my life, so car mechanics are not my specialty, i appreciate your tips a lot, your explanations are clear enough, i'm a fan of your page.
Yes some drop leaves and junk into the fan when you pull it out. A 90° molded heater hose taped onto a shopvac nozzle can get the junk out. Be careful of the blower’s squirrel cage they are often delicate.
Scotty I own a 2012 Volvo S60 R-Design and absolutely LOVE it. Never had a problem. Do you know if there is any known problems with them when they get older? I want to drive it forever.
Aah! Triggered! The last time I used my carb cleaner the can fell down on the woodpile and the snorkel vanished down a hole. Choice words were spoken but the woodpile did not release its captive.
Hi Scotty, You continue to validate all of my thoughts for car maintenance and also the best vehicles to invest hard earned money. I am always learning from your channel and I’m grateful. In this video you applaud the VIAIR air compressors for quality. I’m retired now and about to start my journey into full-time RV living. Other channels are also extolling it’s virtues but when I see you have invested, I’m buying one for the required daily tire checks on my travel trailer. Thanks again for all. As I said once before in a comment, I hope to shake your hand one day. Warmest Regards Tennessee Pal
If you're mechanically inclined, the way it's done is removing the throttle body where applicable. Most people who do this themselves are just going to spray debris back into the intake. Some things he makes sound simple. If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.
What`s so hard about it ? Anybody can do this, its called not being lazy !! Most of the time it can be cleaned without removal & it wont spray debris into the intake if you spray the cloth & then wipe the throttle body clean !! ITS SIMPLE & IT WORKS !!
@@rodneyjones4890 So you're telling me that everyone who sees this video is just going to automatically know what throttle body they do and don't have to take off to properly clean it? That's pretty brave. That's how intakes get blown off of 3.8 series 2 GMs that have a customer try to "clean" their own throttle body. Intake is plastic. But hey, ain't your money! Hey everyone! You might save yourself $150! Or you might have to put a $300 intake on your car because it's plastic and might blow to bits! You know what? Go for it. I make more money putting an intake on a car over cleaning the throttle body anyway.
I use Amsoil and have for decades, extended drain interval, 25,000 mile rated oil and 15,000 mile rated Amsoil oil filter. The car or truck usually falls apart around the motor or I sell it and the engine is solid. Regardless of the oil and filter rating I always change the oil once a year on our primary vehicles. I could also tell you a story on how I was introduced to Amsoil back in early 1990's and why I still use it today.
I think that's only on newer vehicles with electronic throttles. An older vehicle as shown here that has a springy cable throttle should be fine (the kind you can manually rev the engine with).
@1:39 - Scotty did warn about disturbing the throttle body on newer computer controlled vehicles in another video and the need to reset these vehicles' computer. So be warned!
Things used in this video: 1. CRC Mass Air Flow Cleaner 2. CRC Throttle Cleaner 3. Portable Air Compressor 4. Common Sense Scotty, you need to make a video on how to use #4. Some people don't have a clue.
Hey Scotty Is it good to clean the MAF like every few months as preventative maintnence ? its so simple I think it wise. especially since I live in a dusty Desert
Scotty, I had a 80's era 6 cyl. full size Chevrolet. The summer heat killed my battery, so I relocated one to the seating area floor. 1 problem fixed. Then I put 3in. long bolts to rear of hood to raise it to let hot air out. Also loosened water gasket a bit. Car ran fine even though the water temp. was a bit lower. Took the worries out.
They are easy to reach normally, handle them gently, as you should with EVERY sensor. These newer vehicles are delicate things in comparison to the older vehicles
Dear Scotty another great video. I use synthetic on all my machinery, cars and motorcycles. As I do the regular maintenance myself and save the labor I change the oil and filters as if I were using semi-synthetic oils at the recommended change times not 1,000 or 2,000 miles that I could. My Isuzu pickup after 70,000 miles runs like new.
Hey Scotty, does the name Sylvan Rodriguez sound familliar to you? My uncle was telling me that Sylvan would ask you if a car he was going to buy would be a good buy. I think he said you worked on Houston channel 11 as well.
Can someone please help, as I am unable to decide the best route when filling my tires with to correct tire pressure do I use the number my manuel suggests or is it just the actual tire pressure on tire? Which one am I to use?
Scotty if you see this comment Iam thing of using a Toyota Camry for Uber or Lyft or Taxi service . Around 08 ,09 or 10 would you recommend V-6 or I4 and specific year ?
just discovered you recently .been a mechanic sine mid 60's retired now but all this new stuff is new to me get a lot of new info from you and realize we think the same way from the old days you do talk kind of fast but i can understand you most of the time at least you don't have a bunch of kids or crapy loud music covering up your voice
Tried this on my 1998 Mits Pajero/Montero , made a huge difference idling smoother , forgot to attach the electric connector and it was running rough til I realized what I had done, double check you reattach screws and electrical connection, spark plugs next job 😃
Too cold? Normally the temp gauge on my nissan barely registers and during the winter it's very difficult to heat the cab. Fortunately, I live in the desert southwest. 22 years and 225k and it's still going strong.
Hi Scotty. I have a 2011 Chevy Impala. Once or twice every couple of hundred miles I will get a short burst of vibration when accelerating from a stop. It only lasts a second or two. I let off the throttle and accelerate fine. Aamco said I needed a complete transmission rebuild and a locally owned transmission shop said that the transmission is fine. The problem is something else. What do you think It might be? Ray

I found with our gas engine Chevy trucks that are drive by wire (no throttle cable) When I clean the throttle blades and move them by hand it will affect how the engine runs until it re learns the throttle position and will idle higher than usual.

Thank's Scotty, i've been a Millwright all my life, so car mechanics are not my specialty, i appreciate your tips a lot, your explanations are clear enough, i'm a fan of your page.
Also, don't forgot to check your cabin air filter, usually behind the glove box on most modern cars
Yes some drop leaves and junk into the fan when you pull it out. A 90° molded heater hose taped onto a shopvac nozzle can get the junk out. Be careful of the blower’s squirrel cage they are often delicate.
Uh my vehicles dont use a cabin air filter
Scotty I own a 2012 Volvo S60 R-Design and absolutely LOVE it. Never had a problem. Do you know if there is any known problems with them when they get older? I want to drive it forever.
That's right. Spray it all over the paint job! Your good friend Vinny in good old Fla.
Does it’s safe to use engine flush like(liqui moly engine flush oil) in a 60000 mile volkswagen petrol car before oil change?
Aah! Triggered! The last time I used my carb cleaner the can fell down on the woodpile and the snorkel vanished down a hole. Choice words were spoken but the woodpile did not release its captive.
Hugh Breckett, LOL !
Lol
The peckerwood was up in the house doing a roustabout
Hi Scotty,
You continue to validate all of my thoughts for car maintenance and also the best vehicles to invest hard earned money.
Warmest Regards
Tennessee Pal
THANK YOU !!!! I SAVED 190 DOLLARS THAT CADILLAC WANTED TO CHARGE ME TO DO THROTTLE CLEANING!
@@bryantr90 WHY IS EVERYONE SO USELESS THESE DAYS ? WHAT IS SO HARD ABOUT IT ?
@@bryantr90 IF YOU CAN WIPE YOUR ARSE CLEAN YOU CAN WIPE A THROTTLE BODY CLEAN, ITS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE !! MAYBE YOU "SNOWFLAKES" SHOULDNT OWN CARS !!
That's good advice Mr Kilmer. Thank you 😀😀
We Love You Scotty!!.... Your The Man Of All Times. Thank You So Much!!
I love EcoBoost engines, love watching them blow up on tracks, that is.
Basic Maintenance... best tip. Best to you and yours.
Moving the throttle butterfly by hand like that can upset some cars and they run crap afterwards.
I think that's only on newer vehicles with electronic throttles. An older vehicle as shown here that has a springy cable throttle should be fine (the kind you can manually rev the engine with).
mine is electronic and i have clean it twice and always move it with my hand, nothing has gone wrong in 2 years
I don't need that Haynes manual nomore thank you Scotty you the man..
@1:39 - Scotty did warn about disturbing the throttle body on newer computer controlled vehicles in another video and the need to reset these vehicles' computer. So be warned!
I was going to comment on that actually lol
Same thing happened to me . Gotta get a scan tool !
What video was it ?
If you looked closely, that video showed Scotty when be was younger
Thanks from down under Scotty! You Da Man!!!!
Things used in this video:
1. CRC Mass Air Flow Cleaner
2. CRC Throttle Cleaner
3. Portable Air Compressor
4. Common Sense
Scotty, you need to make a video on how to use #4. Some people don't have a clue.
Indeed
Dunnig Kruger effect...
That's funny. But true!!
Hey Scotty Is it good to clean the MAF like every few months as preventative maintnence ? its so simple I think it wise. especially since I live in a dusty Desert
I luv ur dedication to cars Mr.kilmer, great video. Happy 4th July!
Awesome content brother. Thanks for the knowledge.
You are the best! Thanks. That's what my car has. False readings. Im going to clean the sensor and throttle
MAF MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR UA-cam THUMBNAIL
Very simple but all too important for long life of our cars. Thanks Scotty
Scotty not only tells us the advice but he signs as he talks for our deaf friends, what a guy
This was one of Scott's best videos. Good advice. Few opinions.
Careful with the MAF sensor. Touch it and the heater element could snap in two.... Ask me
Yes my mechanic said they are very sensitive not even a clean it twice get a new one then
They are sensitive, that's why they say ONLY use MAF sensor cleaner. Don't use brake cleaner, carb cleaner, etc...
Brandon Burley You should "handle with care" but they don't fall apart from just spraying cleaner into, and around them!
Inside door of driver's side or yes, your manual is what you need to go by.
I need one of those life sized jet engine 💨fans Scotty!
Scotty if you see this comment Iam thing of using a Toyota Camry for Uber or Lyft or Taxi service . Around 08 ,09 or 10 would you recommend V-6 or I4 and specific year ?
PRESSURE RATING IS FOR COLD TIRES..... THANK YOU!! I ALWAYS WONDERED!
Always set hot tires 3 to 4 pounds higher than the cold spec so you won't have a low tire light the next morning
just discovered you recently .been a mechanic sine mid 60's retired now but all this new stuff is new to me get a lot of new info from you and realize we think the same way from the old days you do talk kind of fast but i can understand you most of the time at least you don't have a bunch of kids or crapy loud music covering up your voice
+Scotty Kilmer, Toyota Celica bonnet up, to Lexus engine bay! I spotted it ;) Love your vids!
Tried this on my 1998 Mits Pajero/Montero , made a huge difference idling smoother , forgot to attach the electric connector and it was running rough til I realized what I had done, double check you reattach screws and electrical connection, spark plugs next job 😃
Did anyone else think the thumbnail looked like a laser being shot through the sensor 🤣🤣
SCOTTY the best thing I did to my 97 Ford escort at over 200k is changed the spark plug cables. It now runs perfectly.
Change your oil.
And remember WD-40 is not oil.
its a degreaser!
It's water displacement
@@frankienorbertsteiner8167 I know it is the WD-40 comment was meant as a JOKE
What do you think about the 1995 Buick roadmaster lt1 V8 I recently bought it for 600 runs great so far no problems
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH 🙏 GOD BLESS YOU 🙏😇
HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY 🇺🇸❤️🎉🇺🇸❤️🎉🇺🇸❤️🎉
its that tall lady again! God bless you too!
LauraNY Same to you... Gorgeous! From me, Scotty and all the Kilmer club members! Did you have a big gathering at your place?🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
Too cold? Normally the temp gauge on my nissan barely registers and during the winter it's very difficult to heat the cab. Fortunately, I live in the desert southwest. 22 years and 225k and it's still going strong.
john smith I think the cooling system thermostat is stuck open (or missing)
How to maintain your car in three simple steps
#1 sell ur Mercedes
#2 change your oil often
#3 drive a 1994 Toyota celica
How often do you suggest cleaning the throttle body??
Why doesnt scotty have a project corolla from craigslist? Would be fun to watch
What year
How is the MAP sensor clean? Should I clean it or not?
The car doesn't have MAF
How to keep your car running:
Sell it and buy a Toyota
What if we already have a Toyota 🤔🤔
Jack Kenny sell it and buy a Lexus
@@jackkenny4194 Sell it and buy a 94 celica
Lexus is the way to go 🤩
@@user-xq2fz5tz9t The parts are more expensive just because it says Lexus on it. Great cars, but I'll take a Toyota Avalon over a Lexus.
Ray
