Thanks sis! So glad I found your video. I’m an insurance agent myself. So close to 6 figures I could kiss it. I have been at my job only a year. I will def hit it within 5… if I’m at 120-130k by that time I definitely may just sit still.. But In this economy and a single mom of 3 that don’t even seem like enough. I will be doing my research on becoming an underwriter and seeing if it’s worth something I would be interested in ❤ just a year ago, I had an eviction and repossession on the same day. I turned it around in 30 days and gave not look back! 🙏🏾 congratulations on your beautiful bundle of joy 🎉

Also trying to figure out any jobs I can maybe get a quick certificate in. I'm perfectly happy working my way up if someone is willing to train me. I feel like the reason talking about money has become taboo is because employers, over time, has discouraged it as being something unprofessional to discuss. In actuality, they just don’t want employees to see just how great the disparities are in pay among their coworkers.
Also, socially people don’t like talking about their salary because of fear of judgement regardless of if it’s it lower or higher.
Praying you receive all the blessings ❤❤❤

Kudos to you for being a mom of a newborn, and an Underwriter. Even with great support, that’s still tough.
I have never been an Underwriter, but I’ve been in the P&C Casualty industry for many years.
Nowadays, I would never choose the career if I was a new mom.
I raised two kids, as a single mom while working in the industry who are now young adults.
It was very hard, if I had a strong support system maybe it would have been easier.
Let the Lord continue to lead you, just remember your first ministry is your household.
I pray you are not staying late at the job (even working from home).
I did that, and in the end it’s not what I should have very doing. The Lord does not want us giving additional time to jobs, because it takes away quality time from our children. ❤

And…you do not owe an employer anything. If the potential offer is what you’re looking for…go for it. The 6 wks you’d have to pay back is pennies compared to your earning potential. At the end of the day, employers are not as committed to you as you think they are.

It could be the opportunity of a lifetime. I wouldn't automatically say no. I realize this was posted almost 2 weeks ago. If they're really interested in you, they can wait.
Ask them to cover all or a portion of the 6 weeks leave. If they really want you, they'll do it. Also compare the entire benefits package. How much are they matching for the 401k, profit sharing, employee stock purchase plan if applicable, actual details of the health insurance benefits, pto & the approval of the time off, how have their bonuses and raises been over the last 5 years - this is likely a worst case scenario for you, flexibility, oh and most importantly Pension especially since you're at 3 years currently. Compare the 5 gear incentive as well. It may be better overall. I look at the next 3-5 years instead of 1 year. Also consider layoffs.

I couldn't agree with your comment regarding salary discussion. I learned in the workplace that this topic is highly discouraged and this is mostly because the salary conpensations, especially for women are not fair. If we start discussing salaries more openly, it will help close the pay gap and in turn, increase the earning potential of women.

Also, I am sure your current supervisor would be happy for you to improve your family's circumstances by taking an advancement with higher pay. Hello! I would say I have heard that state farm is a good place to start because they have trainee type of roles. They may not pay the best compared to other companies but with underwriting, if you have no experience, you get in the door where you can, get that 2-3 years experience under your belt and then move. If I were you I would just go on indeed and search "underwriter trainee" positions and see what companies come up and their requirements

I currently work for State Farm and I just finished their trainee program for p&c underwriting. As she mentioned that is the best place to start, the pay isn’t that great, but with the benefits being extremely cheap helps offset the pay. The work is hybrid so you have to live near one of the hubs to be considered for a position. Like she mentioned stay 2-3 years to get the experience, while there get some insurance designations they pay for them all. Once you complete designations they actually pay you bonuses for getting them. State Farm is one of those places once you’re in you never leave because they don’t lay off and if you leave you return lol.

Instead of typing in your city, type in the word "Remote". You should see more positions that are remote only. From there you can start searching and determining if you think any of your skills could apply to any of those positions. Hope that helps. Good Luck searching!

6 months at least and go from there. Also you don't need a license to be an underwriter. When you say agency it's unclear to me. If it's an agent's office, it doesn't always make you as competitive as you could be if you were working for corporate. With many years in insurance and updating your resume with a bachelor's degree, you're competitive already. I've helped people get roles with less.

I’m going to work on cross training but my current company requires 2 yrs experience minimum for the position I want to be in that matches my salary expectations. From your experience do you think someone with no experience and cpcu will be able to pivot into your role? Or I should just stick to claims to utilize my cpcu 😞

Honestly, I think that you will need to have the experience. Like you said at least 2 years. But then again, it could just be your company. There are different companies that may be willing to offer what you are making. But even then, they still may need the 2-3 years of specific underwriting experience. However, it never hurts to just try. You never know what could happen.

I would say try and get into insurance. There are several ways you can do this. If you are not a sales type of person, trying a customer service position. If you don't mind sales, try a sales rep position. 9 times out of 10 the company will pay for you licensing. If you want to go back to school and try and get in that way, I would suggest a degree in business or finance. Alot of companies will hire recent grads into entry level associate or trainee underwriter positions.

I had a p&c license but I let it expire. I don't need it for underwriting but I am going to get it again because I want to remain licensed

Loved the video... to answer the question, why is it taboo... I wouldn't say it is, when you make more than a certain amount. No one minds sharing they make six figures, but when you bring home $35k before taxes, you kind of hide that info.

Are you a financial underwriter or an insurance underwriter? Your comment says financial but I see comments regarding insurance. Yes an insurance company can be & of usually considered a financial institution but they're also 2 different roles underwriting different things.
I see that you're in work comp.

@@mallorylouise331 Okay I work with commercial also as UM nurse (utilization management). I didn't know underwritters make 120k upward (that's more than I make!). May be worth looking into.
