I DIDNT EVEN NOTICE LOL
Anthropology isn't generally the study of old stuff. Anth is the study of human
@@-Meric- shut up nerd its literally the study of shit thats often thousands of years old
@@David22092001 Are u thinking of archeology cuz anthropology is not that.
I like how the Professor at 1:30 flat out just said "Yeah, that was a rough year for me". I applaud him for being transparent, and acknowledging that he had some unfortunate things behind the scenes affecting him. I think that what some people don't realize is that it's incredibly hard to appeal to every student that you teach, and leaving them informed with lectures every single day is extremely difficult if you get even the slightest bit distracted.
I really liked how the chemistry professors took the criticisms as valid and were not offended but also gave some perspective as to what was going on in their personal lives during that time
Chemistry would be kinda chill to hang with these professors but you gotta be committed to learning the material.
Chemistry is honestly not that bad, I realized how easy it was once I started to take biochemistry and organic 😭😭
Chemistry is also super fascinating, so hearing these nerds infodump would be awesome to hear imo.
Really depends on the department. When well organized and ran it is as you say, otherwise....
gustafson was that good
The subject matter isn’t too bad, but some departments absolutely suck. I’ve seen multiple chem departments in my state get investigated for discrimination because they were so unwilling to accommodate disabled students
Bret Gustafson is the type of professor who thinks that if some students manage to do good in his class, then the ones who did bad must've done bad because of their own issues.
Well that's typically why people don't do good in a class... lmfao.
@@empyreanite2294 Not necessarily
@@djsaidez271 "Typically", learn to read
@@empyreanite2294 Some students are intrinsically better at some topics than others, some students go out of their way to study outside material that the professor doesn’t bother to elaborate on, etc.
It’s just as likely that the students in a low performing class that did well performed better due to things they did outside of instruction, which should never be the expectation unless specifically laid out by the professor. And I’ll gamble a million that “look up this concept on UA-cam to understand it” isn’t on a syllabus anywhere.
@@timeup2549 By that i mean that's the case less than half the time
Being a college Professor really is a fast track to insane ego
Very true! Many such cases!
How so?
@@jonesr227 I think when you constantly have a bunch of people in a room depending on you and only you, you can probably pretty easily forget your place
I’ve found that science professors typically are always super friendly (maybe because they constantly have to work with many other professors given the complex and intertwined nature of science so regularly have the same experience as students of having to learn a new high level concept from a professor giving them a lot more empathy and understanding for students) whereas social studies and fields like that where a professor can do a lot of work with minimal input from other professors can become much more prideful and condescending. An example would be that a history professor could specialise in a specific war and would not really need input from other history specialists beyond papers and research whereas a biology professor specialising in a specific protein still needs input from biochem, physics, statistics and computer science specialists to get a clear picture of the topic and perform experiments with advanced equipment.
Obviously, pretty much all professors should have a deep passion for what they research and the main differentiator between a good and a bad professor is typically if they teach because they want to spread their passion or if they teach because the university/college requires it in exchange for using the university’s facilities and resources. I think its really obvious even with only a few classes to tell if a professor is the former or the latter.
@@cahan557 I’m a Mech-E and had a lot of science teachers due to the nature of engineering, and I completely agree. Just about all of my teachers were insanely friendly. They had there standards that you had to comply with, but they were fantastic.
The chemistry teachers had the best chemistry.
Also I think its ironic, in a sad sort of way, that the anthropology professor is one of those types that can't take criticism at all and blames literally everyone else for his own failings. He is definitely a tool. And not a sharp one.
Psssssss. Burn of the third degree.
I was in his class. He's actually a really sweet guy

I’m sure it’s all fucking, awesome!
I'm surprised that someone who studies and teaches anthropology is so defensive. I'm curious as to how he approaches his subjects with curiosity and an open mind?
Spoiler alert: He doesn't.
Love how the anthropologist said “that’s so old it doesn’t even matter” to something written in 2011
Probably a little tongue in cheek but he is definitely a tool
@@SpacemanSpiff1715isn't that like 11 years ago tho
@@SpacemanSpiff1715 Missing context may be that the course is not offered anymore so the feedback may not generalize to the layout of his new courses.
Or, he may not even remember how he taught the course in 2011 so the criticism may not really point out things that he could change to be a better professor.
IMO I feel he is doing a bit for the video over everything else, but that is just my take.
@@mansamusa8191 which shouldn't be that long ago for an ANTHROPOLOGY professor 🤣
Wow, Bret Gustafson (the first prof who shows up) is a tool, who didn’t add any context or reasons as to why people may have struggled in his class, and is then surprised when people called him a tool?! Wow, what a surprise! :D

The other anthro prof just seemed passionate about his subject. Fair enough. (Would rarely punch in the face)
The chem teachers are honestly hella fun, and I know I’d most likely enjoy learning from them. (Wouldn’t punch in the face)
lol what a rating scale. 0/5 punches to the face, 5/5 punches to the face... the only difficulty with implementation would be that it's an inverse scale, so a bit unusual.
chem professors are either the most fun people or demons incarnate and there's no inbetween
I’m going to use your scale of rating people in the future.
also, feris buelers day off is a great movie so another positive for the anthro prof. that would bump him to a wouldn't punch in the face for me
My professor used to write fake reviews of himself on rate my professor, and we all could tell 😂
That's very sad,
same lmao, he still had a 2.5 average tho lol
There’s a professor at my school who’s rated 1.9. Multiple students said he wrote some of the reviews lol.
the dynamic you get when 2 collogues read each others reviews is 100% better than solo content
The chemistry department have the best chemistry. Sorry, had to do it.
They are clearly not seeking the lowest energy level. I'm sorry too
Good one!
They certainly had the best reactions
It amuses me that certain professors (who are more than happy to tear students to shreds in their critiques) throw the toys out of the pram when they're on the receiving end. That being said, most lecturers and tutors I've had were incredibly helpful and polite. I was lucky to not encounter any professors quite like the gentleman who appears first in this video.
Yep. The review that said he was a tool is 100% accurate based on how he acts
Loomis was deadass so distracting in class I would snapchat about it all the time.... 😅 Very nice people though. Literally work wife and husband lol idk how their significant others feel about it because idk how you could get along with another person better than they get along with each other. Students make a thing out of it because we're jobless. Was walking down the hall one day and saw him knocking on Daschbach's office saying "Daschyyyyyy~~~" I had to go bruh
“because we’re jobless” 😂
The chemistry prof that "kept trying to convince us that the material was amazing" sounds like a great prof!
Guy labeled with IPMLA (edit: Bret Gustafson) is clearly a bad teacher. Everyone else was open to criticism and gave their best explanation for why that student may have struggled with them while this guy just got upset and didn't even try to read the reviews in full.
edit: first few replies clear some of my other thoughts up
sure man the good reviews were botted lmao
@@archlifts947 I didn't say that. I was sharing my opinion based on his behavior. Maybe I didn't make that clear, that's my fault.
I believe that teachers who can't take criticism or are unwilling to admit where they need to grow aren't good teachers. For instance, Richard Loomis and Megan Daschbach read multiple less-than-favorable reviews, but they're both still able to admit where they may have struggled because they know they aren't always right or perfect. This shows me exactly how they behave while teaching and I'm willing to bet they are significantly more accommodating and more of their students actually like them.
Overall, I may have exaggerated slightly by saying Mr. Gustafson is a bad teacher, but he still isn't a good one in my book.
@@blanky7064 I would not say 'A clearly bad teacher' the only problem he has is his pride. and pride is not enough to lable some one as bad or good its just an unwanted quailty if there is too much of it, I would say he is just too pridefull
@@archlifts947 If you read the last sentence in my reply to you I corrected myself. Out of frustration I made a big statement and I shouldn't have. And again, everything I've said is just my opinion so the idea of what is good and bad or whether things should even be labeled that way is subjective. I don't plan on having a long conversation about this, but thank you for checking me.
I know some great professors, hell even some of my own mentors when I was in grad school, who seem like complete a dicks from the outside, and maybe there is some truth to it, but as soon as you put in some work to get beyond that, you would find that they are rockstars in their field, and really care about what they teach and as a result find it personally insulting when students don't show that same level of dedication into the course and field of study. Generally, they were also no bs straight to the point people, they were not afraid of calling out students and generally had the experience to back it up. Now I would never judge someone based on one UA-cam video, but just a quick look over of his research and career tells me that he very well could be one of those people, he has the creds to back up his attitude. Not every professor is going to try to be your friend, or even care about your feelings, and some are prideful, as this is their life's work, and many students will walk all over you and your work if you let them, despite the fact that they refuse to work hard enough to succeed.
that grown man did not just say "too bad you don't have your name on here", and his reactions to criticism, id hate to be in this guy's class.
Perfectly made! Love Loomis and Daschbach!
"he is really big... get over it and go to his office hours" i love this person.
I like Richard Loomis. He wasn't offended or rude. And he just seemed completely honest.
David Strait is a fun professor, I had the chance to take his Anatomy and Physiology course this past semester, and while the level of studying required was insane, the class itself was interesting. He was fast, but thorough
You could even say he’s sharp as a tack.
I'd change my major from Anthropology to Chemistry.

I'm so glad Rate My Professor got rid of the hotness rating. That was a weird thing
This is so wholesome. The chemistry teachers are hilarious
Funny that the guy who loves ferris bueller ended up looking and sounding like the teacher from the movie
I was thinking the same thing.
life imitates art
What I noticed is that the chem professors were able to pinpoint the exact semester the criticism was made in. Meaning it was so out of character for them...
These anthropology professors are nothing like my anthro professor. First day of lecture, my anthropology professor ran around the theatre, singing the national anthem of Argentina. He’s very epic, these profs bring a bad name to anthro
Intro chem profs have always been amazing whether its 111/112 or 105/106. their classes are hard for the average student coming in but the profs are so nice and helpful you forget about that.
I really liked the pair that were close so they went together. Having someone to riff with makes it more lively
“it’s on the syllabus” how many times have you heard that from a terrible professor
I once emailed the professor a very specific question that basically boiled down to "I read the syllabus, can you clarify this part a little more?"
Dude literally just hit me back with "it's in the syllabus". I hated that dude and that class. Unfortunately I ended up having three classes with him before I got my degree - hated every single one of his classes and learned nothing from him as a professor, and remember nothing from those classes at all. Still aced them though.
You can tell the anthro prof deserved the ratings he got by the way he reacted 😂 Honestly, im convinced he is just joking because no way a real person responds this poorly to criticism. If he is just having a laugh, then good on him to keep it lighthearted!
8:54 He definitely deserved the review he wrote of himself as if he were a student.
Gustafson & Strait's reaction to criticism were just pure shittery energy that a professor should NOT have. If your reaction to criticism is "Ha, 2011 so it doesn't matter!" or to respond with tone of mockery, it tells students that you think you're objectively better than them and that you have no capacity for self-improvement. Ratemyprofessor exists so that students can learn to avoid these guys.
good thing before I started college, my highschool told me about the rate my professor website.. and oh boy it saved me big time when selecting classes
I mean, some professors got funny reviews. Those professors just got straight up insults hurled at them (from 15 years ago, no less). I would've paid it no mind either. Be constructive, not rude.
@@jonaza2105 They said what was wrong with them, that's not what I would call "straight up insults".
@@jonaza2105
My thought exactly. It's fine for them to ignore a comment like "lecture was boring" because that comment is subjective and contains no helpful information. Helpful information looks like "use more examples based in current affairs" or "develop a slide show about topic X". Besides, they knew they were being recorded for entertainment purposes, and probably have seen this kind of review many times before.
Well the point of that comment seems to be that he has improved and so the comment is not an accurate reflection of him now, so it’s ironic that you say he has no capacity for self improvement. Also if a student misses something that is on the syllabus and then complains that they didn’t get something, that is not necessarily the professor’s fault
Haha I love this. Wish other universities would follow suit.
I have a question, is this real or comedy??
@@Bella-wp7wz This is real
The reason there are no CS professors in this video is because the courses are taught by Wikipedia pages, TAs, or other schools free online courses.
💀
One of the biggest part about being a good/relatable/beneficial teacher, is being able to handle criticism like this. Know that if students are going out of their way to give it on their own, than they want better
I loved this! I didn’t have Gustafson but I did have Strait (s/o anthro dept 😤) and was pre-med so of course I had Loomis and interacted with Daschbach. It’s been about 6-8 years since I was in their classes but I still think of them fondly and hope they’re all doing well.
i love when he hits the table and the whole room shakes. very big guy
I had both Professor Strait and Professor Daschbach and they were absolutely wonderful people. Strait made anatomy super enjoyable and Daschbach made chemistry as entertaining as she possibly could and I would vouch for both of them! It’s so nice to see them here 😂

The anthropology professor is doing nothing but to confirm the comments of his students with his attitude. He doesn't handle well criticism. Justified or not, he doesn't process it well, thin skinned.
"Wow this review is from 2011 is almost the exact same as the ones from 2004 and 2015 I must be doing a good job" Like you'd think that if people across 10 years are giving the exact same criticism then maybe you're doing something wrong. He even went on to call their criticism trash because they called him out lmao
These Chemistry teachers seem awesome.
I ended up dropping chemistry because we were gonna have to the whole periodic table memorized (lame reason to quit, I know) and our teacher would get sidetracked talking about his personal life for the while class period....
