In this case, he definitely could have done more. He were having fun, still fully engaged, enjoying the lesson. But I stopped at 5 minutes to show how much could be done in a short period of time without pushing further. Generally though, I try to go as long as every individual kid can go, but make sure to stop while the kid is still having fun and doing well to end it on a good note.
I would do anything to see a video of this wonderful teaching similar skills to children with autism/adhd/ODD…. Or any other combination of disabilities . I work in public school as a para and I have a lot of the harder cases that can become violent with me and I’m trying soooooo hard to make this work and to make real connections while trying to sneak some learning in there , but it end ups so often with complete refusal to do anything or worse with some sort act of violence against me . Public schools don’t provide teaching at all for us , and I can’t even find anything on UA-cam to help paras teach special ed kids that can be violent towards you … we need help .. anyone that can direct me towards somewhere to get the knowledge I need to be able to do this ? I want to be that soft safe space for these kids .. but I refuse to be anyone’s punching bag …. I’m afraid I’m gonna burn out and leave …. But I think I’m such a positive spot in these kids days … but I come home n all the frustration pours out of me to the point it feels like poison .. I hate it 😖.. somebody help a sista out , lol, please !
Don’t give up - I am a grandma that understands your plea. Those children come from homes / living spaces that are in need of help. The issues you are having require absolutely more support for you and for the entire family. That violence may be the only language that child knows that will get someone to pay attention. Bless you for caring. Hopefully someone seeing this can provide resources for you.
You're a remarkable teacher. I have 3yo twin boys and two older kids. I'm here to learn! Question: at 2:48 you asked, "Ready to do a bit of blending?" - I just watched your video about how to keep children focused. What if he wasn't ready to do blending?
That's a good question. And yes, that would be a non-example in terms of when to use questions vs. directions. In this case, it's about adjusting your teaching for the kid in front of you and this little one gets really excited about and is motivated by moving to the next skill. So the question was more about motivation and transition vs. a real question.
I have this problem teaching this to. And My little one gets so confused. It’s hard to teach some of them. It’s like they finally learn the sound then when you use it in a word and it sounds completely different. Then they look at you like that’s not what you told me. I would like to know to the best way to teach them this with out it being so confusing. Thanks in advance! 😊
Very good video! Do you have any tips to help someone who has an issue with recognizing the words? As in, they pronounce all the sounds properly but can't figure out what the word is
Not sure if you’ll see those, but if anyone does, what would be the best of his videos to show the teacher to get the teacher interested in using this method of teaching?
I'd love to see him work with an autistic child also, they do not process the same depending where they are on the spectrum, I'd love to see his techniques
I started teaching my autistic son to read when he was 3 years old, even though he wasn't talking, but I get up every day religiously and apply these concepts and by the time he was 5 years old he said his 1st word and everything I was teaching he was actually learning but just couldn't respond. Now my son is 8 years old in 2nd grade and reading at the 4th grade level.
How old is your child? If he's too young, he may not be developmentally ready. When he is ready, you could try blending as a separate lesson - start with easy ending blends like nd, nt
No, cursive comes after getting the letters written correctly. Reading comes first then writing. When they can remember the letter names and sounds, then them write the letters, upper and lower case.
My son is in a bilingual program with Spanish. They want him to learn his ABCs in Spanish 1st and not to introduce English yet at all. Do you have a phonics video for spanish? I have been trying to see if you do. I see you have spanish phonics cards.
How old is this child? My kiddo is 4.5 and we’re starting to work on blending but he struggles making it “smooth” for example. “Set” would be ssss…eeeee….t but he doesn’t ever smooth it out / make it short to get to “set”
Try teaching them by saying SSSSSEEEET without pauses or breaks in between. You Do a few examples a day for a few days from your mouth and I promise you your kid will get it
My son started being curious about letters and reading when he was 2.5. I'm no teacher but I saw his interest and we took it from there. He went to kindergarten at 4 and was the only reader. His teacher was brilliant. She put them all in a circle on their "reading rug" and my son read to the others. It sparked a lot of interest in the other children as a lot of parents came up to me and said their child wants to read like X does. To this day he is a voracious reader and volunteers at the library (a place we spent a lot of time). Good luck.
I have teach my child to sounds all alphabet but somehow she still needs time to memorized all. What do you think should I move to blend letter or still review the sounds?
Phonics. Start with the letter sounds and then when they've grasped it, you teach them to blend the sounds.Honestly, with children I realize you need consistency( most importantly) and then time with them ( keep it short and sweet as much as possible). Check out his other videos though, I learned so much from them. I'm sure you would too.
Awesome !!! I have though one question: Why do you have in English the same sound (a) for both: for "u" and for "o" ??? Probably you'll tell me there's a difference in the way you're expelling the air... Correct, but... Huff, English is both beautiful and hard to learn, and the German language is even harder! 😅
Question if a kid 5 year old knows all the letter sounds they are beginning to blend But the blend say " t a p" but they say sap what is going on or "t o p" he will read pot What is happening here
Lots of things could be happening, but one thing to try is making sure they're strong on blending all combinations of 2-sound words (at, up, op). My Blending Words course moves through all of these and also provides more tips for correcting different blending errors. Here's a preview of the course! ua-cam.com/video/EjZzWmSSKlo/v-deo.html
I think its important to see individually what she can handle and to teach that, just one step at the time, not trying too much, but just step bij step what she can handle And you also may want to consider if its important to you that she grows up with peers or not. If so, you might want to wait, so she can learn at school and also develop social skils with peers and make friends (but that depends on how far ahead she is/will be of her peers
He is 4! He started with the letter sounds, then blending 2 sounds out loud, then written. I explain these steps in my free workshop, here’s the link if you’re interested. www.toddlersread.com/free-workshop
My 6year old kid has started reading she can pronounce the sounds of words correctly but could not be able to spell them altogether kindly make a detail video or series of video for new learners in spelling
My best support is my Reading Rules course which covers all the reading and spelling rules. But here's a helpful spelling lesson video if you're interested: ua-cam.com/video/Yo6CtNGovCY/v-deo.htmlsi=3WYMJ498GRZNpV8z
You also weren't completely correct with him -> Every vowel has a short way (as that you has studied him) and long as in the Alphabet so he also is right. Every vowel be schwa ə as well. On the other hand the is examples where the vowel doesn't fit with of the previous three. So English spelling is crazy and it's not easy for teaching.
What made you stop there? I've definitely been accidentally pushing too long with my 3 y.o. How did you decide that it was enough for today?
In this case, he definitely could have done more. He were having fun, still fully engaged, enjoying the lesson. Can you do videos specifically for kids? So they can watch on their own.
The whole point is eye contact and you are the teacher
Blending is challenging for kids, and it takes a lot of consistent practice for them to process it.
